WELCOME FROM THE PUBLISHER

It’s

so great to be able to welcome you to the 13th annual Realscreen Awards, live and in-person!

After two years of online presentations, it’s going to feel good to hug and shake hands with our award winners again. I am proud of what our team was able to pull off in a virtual setting, but the truth is that nothing can replace the IRL experience.

This year’s edition of our annual awards brought 616 submissions from 22 countries, which further attests to the fact that the Realscreen Awards have become one of the most coveted honors in the unscripted and non-fiction screen content industry. Thanks to all of the producers and broadcasters who submitted their work for consideration, and enormous thanks to our 95 jury chairs and judges — theirs is a Herculean assignment, and we are grateful for the considerable time they’ve spent screening and scoring the entries.

We are also very pleased to honor four industry trailblazers by inducting them into the 2023 Realscreen Hall of Fame.

First up is the recipient of our inaugural Action Award, Bree Frank, who has committed herself to lifting the voices of BIPOC professionals through equity, inclusion, and belonging, in the world of media and beyond. She has pursued this goal through Hue You Know, a production resource hub she founded in 2017 that allows media professionals of color to post employment opportunities and seek mentorship and community. Beginning as a Facebook group with 27 people, Hue You Know now boasts more than 16,000 members.

The next inductee to our Hall of Fame is Alex Gibney, who was called “the most important documentarian of our time” by Esquire Magazine. Some of his notable fi lms include the triple Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, the Academy Award-winning Taxi to the Dark Side , and the Oscar-nominated Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room Last, but very definitely not least, we are delighted to welcome Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman, co-presidents of non-fiction entertainment at Sony Pictures Television, into the Realscreen Awards Hall of Fame. These multi-Emmy-winning executives remain among the most sought-after producers and respected management teams working in non-fiction today, with credits that include Indian Matchmaking and Night Stalker for Netflix, Selena + Chef for HBO Max, American Idol for ABC, and So You Think You Can Dance for Fox, among so many others. Join us as we celebrate excellence in non-fi ction and factual entertainment. Grab a cocktail and enjoy this year’s show, hosted by Ann Pornel.

ALEX GIBNEY

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

Hailed as “the most important documentarian of our time” by Esquire Magazine, Alex Gibney’s acclaimed films include the triple Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief; the Academy Award-winning Taxi to the Dark Side; the Oscar-nominated Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room; the multiple Emmy Award-winning Mea Maxima Culpa; the Peabody Award-winning Zero Days; No Stone Unturned; Sinatra: All or Nothing at All; and Rolling Stone: Stories from the Edge, codirected by Blair Foster.

Other notable projects include The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley; Citizen K; Crazy, Not Insane, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival; Agents of Chaos, a two-part HBO documentary about Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. elections; and Totally Under Control, a searing look at the Trump administration’s failure to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, he released a two-part documentary, The Crime of the Century, which explored the origins, extent,

and fallout of the opioid crisis. His most recent release is the Emmy-winning HBO and HBO Max documentary The Forever Prisoner

In 2013, Gibney was honored with the International Documentary Association’s (IDA) Career Achievement Award; in 2015, the inaugural Christopher Hitchens Prize; the Robert J. Flaherty Award in 2019; and the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival Career Achievement Award in 2020.

“Alex Gibney’s work has consistently adhered to one of the central tenets of journalism — to ‘comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable,’ or as we would say today, ‘speak truth to power,’” says Barry Walsh, content director and editor-in-chief of Realscreen “But there’s another thread that runs through his work. Whether he’s examining the inner workings of newsmakers and icons, or unflinchingly exposing institutional injustices, he tackles every project with a journalist’s innate curiosity and a filmmaker’s visual flair. We are delighted to present him with this honor for his achievements to date, and those to come.”

RSA 17 HALL OF FAME

ELI HOLZMAN

AARON SAIDMAN

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Realscreen is thrilled to induct producers and television production executives Eli Holzman, president of non-fiction entertainment at Sony Pictures Television, and Aaron Saidman, copresident of non-fiction entertainment at Sony Pictures Television, to its Hall of Fame.

Longtime producing partners Holzman (pictured left) and Saidman (right) started 2022 with the most high-profile deal in unscripted entertainment, with Sony Pictures Television (SPT), a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, acquiring their label Industrial Media, one of the foremost “superindie” non-fiction production companies, with such prodcos as 19 Entertainment & 19 Recordings, Sharp Entertainment, B17 Entertainment, Trilogy Films, This Machine Filmworks, Maxine, House of Non-Fiction and the team’s Intellectual Property Corporation under its umbrella.

Holzman and Saidman led Industrial Media for more than three years, doubling its size in that span to achieve a $350 million sale. Since then, these multi-Emmy-winning executives remain among the most sought-after producers and respected management teams working in non-fiction today, producing hits including Indian Matchmaking and Night Stalker for Netflix,

the GLAAD Media Award-winning We’re Here for HBO, The Curse of Von Dutch and The D’Amelio Show for Hulu, Secrets of Playboy for A&E, Selena + Chef for HBO Max, American Idol for ABC, and So You Think You Can Dance for Fox.

Holzman began his career in 1996 at Miramax Films, where he co-founded the company’s TV department, created the multiEmmy-nominated series Project Runway and produced a wide array of scripted series, movies and minis for the studio. In 2008, he co-founded Studio Lambert USA, where he launched and executive produced Undercover Boss, the highest-rated reality premiere of all time. In 2013, Studio Lambert USA was fully acquired and changed its name to All3Media America, with Holzman serving as president of the super-indie’s U.S. operations. Prior to launching IPC, Saidman was the EVP, development & current programming, for All3Media America. In that role, he was the head of creative for the company, overseeing all shows for broadcast and cable networks, including The People’s Couch, The Million Second Quiz, and Declassified: The Untold Stories of American Spies, which he created. Prior to that, Saidman was the head of development and current programming for Studio Lambert USA, where he helped grow the company into a major supplier of unscripted content.
