CONGRATULATIONS TO NDILM 06 Graduates Twelve National Diploma Information and Library Management students from intake 6 graduated at this time. They were among the 1,035 students who successfully graduated from the VTE educational institutions with their National Diplomas and Skill Certificates on Thursday 5 May th 2011 at the 15 National Convocation of Technical and Vocational Educational Institutions at the ICC. The Chief Guest was the HE Minister of Education. Go to Page 3

CHUNG HWA MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARY by Ms Pang Yan Pea CHUNG HWA MIDDLE SCHOOL (CHMS) library welcomed the visit by Nellie DPH Sunny, President Brunei Darussalam Library Association and officials on 29 Mac 2011. The visitors were briefed on the library activities by Ms Pang and later taken on a tour of the library premises. Here is brief report on the CHMS Library The CHMS Library is fully computerized with a collection of around 53,000 books (21,800 Chinese books, 20,100 English books and 10400 Malay books) and 1800 audio visual materials. Our library includes a reading area, a lower primary reading room, a group discussion room and a multipurpose hall. Facilities in the library include four borrowing stations, one self check in station, one book drop service, browsing shelves of books and periodicals in three languages and also multimedia services. Students are taken on class visits to the library featuring craft, video shows and reading classes. Class visits for the secondary students also include multimedia services. Sometimes classes are conducted in the library rather than in their classrooms. Our library can accommodate 3 classes of about 120 students at one time. The number of books borrowed by our students in year 2010 was around 76,000. Library activities: 1. Reading Award (1) Top student in each class. (2) Top three students in each level. Prizes and certificate will be presented to the students. 2. New books introduction Library blog for new books information. 3. Mini Book Fair Invite bookstores to hold mini book fairs. 4. Orientation activity Orientation activity is held in the first week for Year 1 student, 5. Reading passport - One student is allowed to draw one sticker if he/she borrows 2 booksfrom the library each day. Prizes and souvenirs will be given to the students who have completed all the stickers in the Reading Passport within a certain period of time. 6. Discovery Library Quiz- A Quiz is conducted at the beginning of the year with around 10-15questions. 5 Students with correct answers will be selected from each category and presented with certificates and souvenirs. 7. Other year long activities included puzzle-solving, summary writing and so on.

ASIAN FESTIVAL OF CHILDREN’S CONTENT 2011

The Asian Festival of Children’s Content 2011 with the theme ‘ Asian Content for the World’s Children’ held from 26-28 May 2011 at the Arts House, Singapore once again proved to be an exciting and amazing conference bringing in over 700 participants made up of librarians, writers, teachers, care providers, illustrators, tv producers, editors, translators, publishers and book sellers. The AFCC aims to foster excellence in the creation of children’s materials with Asian content in all formats and to facilitate their distribution and access to children in Asia and worldwide. The AFCC is organized by the National Book Development Council of Singapore and works closely with various supporters including the Brunei Darussalam Library Association. From page 4 Inaugural Singapore Children’s Literature Lecture A special event this year was the Singapore Children’s Literature Lecture held on Friday 27 May 2011 at 6pm at the Chamber, the Arts House, 1 Old Parliament Lane. Entitled ‘Society, Culture and Children’ it was delivered by H.E. Dr Jose Ramos-Horta, President of Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste who is a Nobel Peace Prize Winner and author of the Lost World of Timor-Leste.
