Sixty-Five Area Students Receive Heart of Texas Scholarship at HPU This fall, Howard Payne University awarded the Heart of Texas Scholarship to 65 incoming first-year students from Brown County and the seven surrounding counties. This scholarship program began in 2009 and distributes scholarships in the amount of $12,000 per year to area students who qualify. “In light of the current economic times, and in recognition of the important role we play as an economic partner in the Central Texas region, Howard Payne University has chosen to renew and expand its commitment to local area students

through the Heart of Texas Scholarship Program,” said Dr. Brad Johnson, senior vice president for institutional advancement at HPU. “We are delighted with the response we have had from High School Counselors in the area and we want local area students to know that Howard Payne University is not only an affordable option but also an educational experience that can propel them into a successful career or into that graduate program of choice,” Johnson added. Dr. Johnson and his staff are very excited about the number of students who accepted the

Many Heart of Texas Scholarship recipients attended HPU’s new student orientation weekend, Jacket Journey, before school began. (photo by Kalie Lowrie) scholarship this fall and hope to see that number increase in 2011. Students who meet unconditional admission requirements at the university and enroll fulltime in the fall and spring semesters are eligible to apply. Scholarships are available for tuition only. Students must remain continuously enrolled in fall and spring semesters and maintain satisfactory academic

progress toward a degree to continue to receive the award. “This scholarship has opened the door to an educational opportunity for some students who otherwise might not be pursuing a college education at all,” said Glenda Huff, HPU’s director of student aid. “In many instances, we were able to combine this scholarship with other forms of aid which allowed students to not only attend classes,

but also have the experience of living in residential housing. The Heart of Texas Scholarship has provided a much needed source of assistance to make HPU affordable for our local students.” To find out more about the Heart of Texas Scholarship or other financial aid opportunities at Howard Payne University, please contact the Office of Admission at 325-649-8020.
