Christmas Under the Stars Festival On Friday & Saturday, December 3rd and 4th from 4pm-8pm, the community will come together to celebrate the holiday with entertainment, music, activities, attractions, a parade, and other Christmas fun. For Complete list of all the Festival Includes Check out the following pages.

1st Annual 5K “Fun Run” Added to Christmas Festival “Santa’s Sleigh 5K” The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the addition of a 5K “fun run” to be held in conjunction with the Christmas Under the Stars Festival, December 3rd and 4th. “Santa’s Sleigh 5K” will take place at Riverside Park on Saturday, December 4th. Registration and warm up will be at 7:30 AM with a shot gun start promptly at 8:00 AM. Registration forms are available now through December 3rd at the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce office and can be picked up Monday through Thursday between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM and Friday’s 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Entry fee for the “fun run” is only $20 if paid by December

3rd; otherwise the fee will be $25 the morning of the race. T-shirts will be available to the first 75 to register for the race, so sign up early! Cash prizes for 1st and 2nd place overall winners to be announced at the Awards Ceremony to be held during the Christmas Under the Stars Festival at Howard Payne University, 5:00 PM the evening of December 4th. All runners are encouraged to dress in Christmas costumes to show their Holiday Spirit! So hop in “Santa’s Sleigh” and join the elves and reindeer for a fun run in the park! Luncheon to Feature Diversity in the Workplace The Chamber’s Monthly Luncheon will be Friday, December 10 at the Adams Community Center from 11:15 AM to 1 PM. The luncheon, which is open to members and guests, will feature Otis L Scott, Jr.—an engaging speaker who trains on Leadership, Diversity, Team Building and Mentoring. Chamber CEO Laura Terhune noted, “Please be aware that the speaker will begin his presentation promptly at 11:30. Meal service will be from 11:15 to 11:30 with Prima Pasta providing the food.” She continued, “The cost of the meal and training is only $10 so every business owner or manager is asked to send at least one representa-

tive from their company.” Otis Scott, Jr. known to many as “Scotty” is the Diversity & Institutional Alliance Manager for CPS Energy, a billion dollar electric and gas utility company located in San Antonio, Texas. He currently serves on the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Texas State Council as the Director for Diversity and is the Past President for the San Antonio Human Resource Management Association (SAHRMA). In addition, he is the President of the Greater San Antonio Advisory Board of the Texas Diversity Council. Proud to have served 24 years in the Air Force, he achieved the highest rank pos-

sible for an enlistee (Chief Master Sergeant) and went on to become the Senior Enlisted Advisor for the Air Force District of Washington where he worked at both the Pentagon and Bolling Air Force Base. As a pioneer in the Air Force, he served on a diplomatic team that handled

armed controls talks and verification procedures between the United States and the former Soviet Union. He is an accredited instructor for the Community College of the Air Force and a certified Master Instructor. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from National Louis University where he graduated with honors and a Masters in Business and Human Resource Management from Webster University. His experience and expertise comes from his extensive world travel and work in governmental agencies, non-profit companies, and for profit businesses. Awarded the Legion of Merit by the US Air Force for

championing many causes to address and improve the quality of life for enlisted personnel. He is a life member of the Tuskegee Airmen and the Air Force Sergeants Association. He still maintains an active role with both organizations; proving that through tireless hard work and dedication we can all make a difference in the community where we live, work and play. Catered by Prima Pasta, the cost of the luncheon is $10 per person to be paid at the door. Christmas Parade to Light Up Downtown Brownwood This year’s Spirit of Christmas lighted parade will be one of the largest ever in its history. The parade takes over 120 volunteers to organize, produce and operate the more than 100 entries and thousands of participants. Horses, Buses, Semi-trailers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Marching Bands, Rock Bands, Walking Milk Shakes, Clowns, Vintage Automobiles, Fire Trucks, Police Cars, Ambulances, Cheerleaders and Nationally Ranked Division 1 University Booster Club support trailers all help to make up

the annual lighted parade that winds itself through the Historic Downtown District of Brownwood. The Grand Marshal of the parade this year is Good Samaritan Ministries represented by Angela Bostick, Executive Director. Southside Church is excited about this year’s Grand Marshal as Good Samaritan Ministries is a fantastic testimony to the Spirit of Christmas. In this year’s parade there are over 15 awards to be handed out including the following:

HPU Concert Choir and Symphonic Band to present Christmas Concerts The Howard Payne University Symphonic Band and Concert Choir will present Christmas concerts on Friday, December 3, and Saturday, December 4, in conjunction with the Brownwood Chamber’s “Christmas Under the Stars” weekend event. The concerts, which are free to the public, will be held at 8 p.m. each night in HPU’s Mims Auditorium. The HPU Symphonic Band, under the direction of Corey Ash, will perform Christmas selections including “Russian Christmas Music,” “Sleigh Ride” and “Festival Prelude on Adeste Fidelis.” The groups will combine to perform “Many Moods of Christmas,” featuring guest soloist Dr. Diana Ellis, and “The First Noel.” The HPU Concert Choir, under the direction of Monte Garrett, will perform “Mary, Did You Know?” For more information, contact HPU’s School of Music and Fine Arts at 325-649-8500.

Parade entries are now being sought for the 2010 Spirit of Christmas lighted parade.

Ribbon Cutting for Dumas Portraits The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Dumas Portraits on Wednesday, November 17th to welcome them as their newest chamber member. Christmas Festival to Offer Youth Activities, Scavenger Hunt The 2nd annual Christmas Under the Stars Festival is going to be bigger than ever this year as it offers not only an array of children’s activities, but some great fun for youth as well. During the festival at Howard Payne University campus, the Outdoor Recreation Center*, located off of Fisk, will be open offering fun on the rock climbing wall and skate park. For gaming fans, a Halo tournament will also be taking place along with some food and snacks. Probably one of the most ambitious activities taking place for youth will be a fear factor style scavenger hunt which promises to be for those with strong stomachs. “Teenagers are going to love this activity and the prizes will make it all worthwhile,” said Donnette Carmack of the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce Prizes for the scavenger hunt

include a new Apple iPad, as well as a $100 and a $50 Wal-Mart gift card. “We really wanted to give the youth of the area something fun to participate in during the festival,” Carmack said. American State Bank held a ground breaking ceremony on November 17th at 2pm to celebrate the beginning of construction on the new location at 1221 Austin Avenue. Mayor Stephen Haynes, ASB officials and local civic and business leaders were in attendance for the ceremony. Fun for Everyone at the Christmas Under the Stars Festival Friday & Saturday The 2nd Annual Christmas Under the Stars Festival is shaping up to be better than ever with the addition of new events, attractions, and some great holiday fun. This year, the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with Howard Payne University to offer some of these new and unique activities for all ages on Friday, December 3rd and Saturday, December 4th from 4pm to 8pm each night. The main festival will take place on Howard Payne University campus under the bell towers where non-profit agencies will offer fun activities such as letters to Santa, face painting, cookie decorating, pony rides, pet bowl decorating, Christmas story time, a teen scavenger hunt, and much more. Howard Payne will also have their Outdoor Recreation Center* open with youth activities such as rock wall climbing, skating, snacks, and video game competitions.

An entertainment stage will also be featured during the festival where local talent can showcase their skills in front of a live audience. Acts will rotate on stage and will feature the Brownwood High School Choir, Amy’s Dance Academy dancers, Christmas karaoke, and several other local entertainers. Saturday will also feature the announcement of winners in the Santa’s Sleigh 5K Fun Run that will take place that morning at Riverside Park. Commercial vendors will also be on hand offering some great holiday shopping ideas including jewelry, food & drink, home décor, arts & crafts and more. The event will be capped off with a free community Christmas concert by the HPU Concert Choir and Symphonic Band in Mims Auditorium. The concert will run from 8pm-9pm on December 3rd and 4th.

The Lehnis Railroad Museum will also be hosting Christmas festival activities. Kids can enjoy pictures with Santa, mini-train rides, Choo-Choo Tim, and the premier of an all new attraction called “Buster World.” A trolley will be available for transport between Howard Payne campus and the Railroad Museum and parking is encouraged at the museum. The Brownwood ornament…a handcrafted, cloisonné collectible, sold out in just a few days after it’s debut in Thanksgiving of 2009 and again in 2010. A shipment of 36 arrived this week, along with several new styles. We have Bevo, several Aggie themed, a Texas bell, a Texas bluebonnet, and even a Texas shaped ornament. Santa Comes to the Lehnis Railroad Museum for Festival The Martin & Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum will be celebrating a “Choo Choo Christmas” again this December. They will have lots of Christmas decorations, music, and special model train layouts. On Friday, December 3rd and Saturday December 4th, the museum will open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. as part of the Christmas Under the Stars Festival. Santa will be seeing children in the Kress depot, and families can get their Christmas photos with Santa for just $3 each. Trolley service will be outside running families between the museum and HPU campus, the two sites of the Christmas Under the Stars Festival. Choo Choo Tim the Singing Engineer will also be on hand picking his Q-Chord, storytelling, and whistle blowing, as well as giving rides on his

little choo choo train. December 3rd is the premier of the new exhibit “Buster World – For the Kid in All of Us”. From 4:00 p.m. December 3rd through the entire holiday season, a Choo Choo Christmas will include the new American Flyer Model Train exhibit “Buster World – For the Kid in All of Us”. It is the most kid friendly interactive model train in Texas. It has five sections: Circus World, Oil Field, Frontier Land, Future Land, and Fantasy Land. Kids can push buttons that will make toys move, play music and sounds, and burn log cabins to the ground! Not only that, but kids of all ages can crawl under the table and come up in two places in domes, right in the middle of the trains! And a camera has been placed in the “Miss Mary” locomotive and the flat screen TV shows what the “engineer” on the little locomotive can see. There’s nothing like it! “Have yourself a very Choo Choo Christmas” will also be featured at the Lehnis Railroad Museum on the first three Saturdays of December from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each week. Santa Claus will be in the Kress Depot to talk with children, and photo opportunities will be available for that special gift for family and friends. Model railroad
