Chambers Launch Shop Local Campaign for Back-to-School

As the first day of school fast approaches, families will soon be visiting stores to purchase all of the essentials for back-toschool time. The Brownwood and Early Chambers of Commerce want to remind area residents how important shopping at local retailers can be by launching a shop local campaign for back-toschool. The campaign is designed to raise awareness of the importance in keeping local dollars local and how it affects public services, local business, jobs and community activities. “Each time you make a local purchase, you support local jobs,” said Laura Terhune, Director for the Brownwood Chamber. “During tougher times like these, spending those dollars at home makes an even greater impact on the local economy.” Terhune said sales tax that is generated by local purchases goes to fund important city departments such as fire, police, parks, library, and senior services. Businesses also support and sponsor local events and activities that make Brown County a great place to live. “We realize that not everything is available in Brown County stores, but we want to encourage local shoppers to look here first before making a trip out of town,” said Early Chamber Director Wanda Furgason. “Shoppers will often save time and money by shopping locally instead of taking a long trip.” Residents can expect to see and hear local advertising in the coming weeks through a variety of sources to heighten awareness of the importance of shopping locally. Chamber of Commerce officials also released their top reasons to shop local. Why Buying Local Benefits You 1. More money is put into our local economy 2. Jobs are created & saved 3. Local businesses support community activities 4. Better customer service & convenience 5. Tax dollars fund our local fire, police, & parks departments The 2011 Shop Local campaign is sponsored by Heartland Mall, Wendlee Broadcasting, Mid-Tex Cellular, the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Early Chamber of Commerce. For more information about shopping local or to find a local business, visit BrownwoodChamber.org or EarlyTx.com.

Cleanup Planned for Lake Brownwood – Volunteers Needed A cleanup effort is being organized at Lake Brownwood by several organizations to help rid the lake bed of garbage and debris that has been exposed due to the low lake level. The Brown County Water Improvement District, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce, Early Chamber of Commerce, Lake Brownwood Community Development Council, and Keep Brownwood Beautiful have joined together for the effort to help dispose of the man-made debris from Lake Brownwood. The cleanup is scheduled to take place on the next two Saturday’s, August 13th and 20th from 7am-11am with large roll-off dumpsters available for volunteers and Lake Brownwood residents to dispose of trash and debris they find in the dry lake bed. The cleanup effort will consist of two components, one involving lake property owners and the other using volunteers. Owners of waterfront property are asked to clean up the dry area around their property, bag up the trash, and bring it to one of the designated points from disposal. Volunteers are also being sought to help in more visible areas of the lake. Volunteers interested in helping can join the effort by meeting at the Tootie Kelly Real Estate office parking lot, 7551 Hwy 279, at 6:30am each of the clean-up days. Volunteers will be given bags and instructions from there. Drop-off points for lake debris will be at the following locations and dates: Aug 13: Mountain View – roll-off dumpster Flagship Inn – Lower parking area Aug 20: Public Boat Ramp at Dam – roll-off dumpster Officials will carry the collected man-made debris to the Brownwood landfill at the end of each cleanup. Property owners and volunteers are reminded that only man-made trash and debris from the lake can be collected. Bagged garbage from the lake bed can be placed into the roll-off dumpsters. Metal, tires, and other similar objects may not be thrown into the roll-off dumpsters, but will be accepted separately. No rocks, brush, stumps, trees, etc. may be removed from the lake bed and those helping with the cleanup are not allowed to drive vehicles on the dry areas of the lake. Also, no household WINDSHIELDS appliances can be accepted during this cleanup effort.

Brown County Museum Of History Begins Revitalization Plans It’s Your History…Discover It! Explore It! Treasure It!

Plans are currently underway to revitalize the Brown County Museum of History. The board of directors is looking at a thematic approach in presenting the historical collections, with both the Old Jail building and the Annex to be revamped. The Old Jail building itself, built in 1903, will continue to be the venue for the Firearms Museum, and in addition will house a Sheriffs of Texas exhibit, Forensics, and “Jail Life and Lore” displays. These will include interactive displays to provide hands-on activities for children. Several rooms of the former sheriff’s living quarters would be returned to period detail. Plans for the Annex building

across the street include featuring an enlarged and comprehensive exhibit of Camp Bowie and the German POW camp it contained during World War II. “Brownwood has an exciting opportunity to create a display of Camp Bowie and preserve historically significant artifacts for display to Brown County citizens. This would also be a draw for many tourists seeking information about the camp. Over a quarter of a million men went through Camp Bowie during the war years—it is an important part of Texas and world history.” says Steve Blake, curator of the Firearms Museum. Plans would include videotaping local citizens who lived in Brown County during World War II and record their memories of the

time period. Being able to preserve this oral history is seen as an important mission of the museum. The Annex would continue to house it’s extensive collection of Brown County artifacts, including the log cabin and one- room schoolhouse. And as part of the strategy to make history exciting for the youngest generations, hands-on displays will invite visitors of every age to learn more about Brown County. Making all this more accessible to residents and tourists means increasing the days the museum is open. If you would like to volunteer as a docent guide, or are interested in helping with this exciting project, please contact Beverly Norris at 325-643-1665.
