Smarter Giving. Your Way.

The JCF 2013 Annual Report was made possible in part by a generous contribution from Hirtle, Callaghan & Co.

MISSION The mission of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Kansas City is to promote the practice of tzedakah (righteousness, charity) and the pursuit of tikkun olam (repairing the world) by serving as the central resource and advocate for planned giving and endowments in the Kansas City Jewish community. We accomplish this by: • Building financial resources to promote sustainable Jewish communal organizations and programs; • Engaging, educating and inspiring multiple generations of givers throughout the Jewish community; and • Providing creative philanthropic planning expertise to individuals and families to assist them in achieving their charitable goals.

VISION The vision of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Kansas City is to foster, sustain and ensure a strong and vibrant Jewish community for today and for generations to come.

20 Planned Gifts We regret any errors or omissions.

We hope that the Foundation’s work has affected you in a positive way and that you see your Impact Beyond Numbers. ”

IMPACT BEYOND NUMBERS Left-brain – right-brain. We need both hemispheres to understand our world and live fully. Much of the work of the Foundation is regularly expressed in numbers, but sometimes we spend so much time focusing on them that we forget they are only symbols, reflecting the ideas, aspirations and hard work of many donors, volunteers and nonprofit professionals. Perhaps no number is of greater symbolic value than the number 1. For the third year in a row, the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Kansas City was ranked number 1 for its overall success in the annual survey conducted by the Department of Planned Giving and Endowments of the Jewish Federations of North America, representing nearly 450 Jewish communities. The ranking is based on 7 different measures which include the number and size of various types of funds with which the Foundation works. These measures in turn reflect the trust and confidence the Kansas City Jewish donor community has in the Jewish Community Foundation, the vision, sustained hard work and commitment of its board and staff, the strength of our partnerships with Jewish communal organizations and the transformational impact of those partnerships. The Jewish Community Foundation’s 2013 Annual Report is our attempt to connect the quantitative nature of our inputs and outputs with the qualitative nature of our impacts. We hope that the Foundation’s work has affected you in a positive way and that you see your Impact Beyond Numbers.

We are number one

still

Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the dedicated efforts of our volunteers and professional staff, our Foundation continues to rank at the top of Jewish Community Foundations nationally. This is the third consecutive year that we have achieved this ranking based on the results of the annual survey conducted by the Department of Planned Giving and Endowments of the Jewish Federations of North America. In the words of JFNA, “achieving success cumulatively speaks to a program which is attuned to doing many things well: developing and managing endowment funds, investing the assets, servicing the hundreds of accounts which the foundation holds, and most of all, interacting with the community’s leadership and donors.” We couldn’t have done it without you.

SUPPORTING FOUNDATIONS

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS

Supporting Foundations promote philanthropy and multigenerational giving while enjoying the benefits of public charity status and avoiding excise taxes, restrictions and spending requirements imposed on private foundations.

Donor Advised Funds are charitable giving accounts that enable donors to give more, smarter and better. Established with a single donation of $5,000 or more ($2,500 for those under age 35), a Donor Advised Fund allows donors to recommend grants to any qualified charitable organization. Donors may name successor advisors in order to encourage future generations to continue their tradition of giving.

ASSETS DISTRIBUTED Each grant made and every dollar distributed changes lives and strengthens our community. Many organizations define themselves by dollars coming in, while we believe that dollars going out best represent the value of the Jewish Community Foundation. Though the vast majority of funds granted are from generous individuals, the JCF has several collective granting bodies which respond to community needs. Two of them are The Grants Committee of the Community Legacy Fund and J-LEAD. The Community Legacy Fund is comprised of contributions to the Foundation used for the purpose of enhancing and maintaining the quality of Jewish life locally, and responding to emergency needs in Jewish communities around the world.

100% OF PEOPLE CAN MAKE AN IMPACT THROUGH JCF JCF is proud to partner with families and individuals of all ages to maximize the impact on the causes our donors care about most. The following are just a few examples of the multitude of programs that, with our donors’ help, improve the lives of so many in our community. The Jay Grant Memorial Fund was created by former JCC Aquatic Director, Mary Wilbern O’Neal and her husband Mike in memory of her son Jay. The fund provides subsidies for children with special needs or circumstances who would benefit from therapeutic swimming lessons. The Fund has provided swim lessons for 15 qualifying children. “Jay always donated time to special needs children and their families,” says Mary. Jewish Employment Services was created as a joint venture by the Jewish Federation, Jewish Family Services and Jewish Vocational Services. The program provides clients with job coaching, interview training, and skill building. Since its inception, 295 clients have found jobs, with 62 of these clients finding employment in 2013. “The Lowenstein Family Supporting Foundation was an initial funder of Jewish Employment Services and is proud to continue supporting this successful venture,” says Lon Lowenstein, supporting foundation president. “We appreciate the structure that JCF provides in helping us to underwrite programs like these.”

The Jewish Family Services Food Pantry provides those in need with food, cleaning products, paper goods, personal hygiene and baby care items. In 2013 the Food Pantry distributed 87,807 pounds of food to 1,038 individuals. More than 44% of the families served were Jewish and of the Jewish families served, 23% kept kosher homes. Participants in the JCF’s B’nai Tzedek youth philanthropy program (see page 16) donated $2,543 to the food pantry in 2013. “The food pantry is important to me because I like knowing that I am making a difference in our community and fighting hunger,” says B’nai Tzedek Youth Council member Lindsey Paul. KC Kollel’s Ahoovim Program serves the community’s adults with special needs. Now in its fifth year, Ahoovim offers monthly events to engage and educate this very special population. Along with individual donors, the Foundation’s Community Legacy Fund, Flo Harris Foundation, Hy and Bella Vile Legacy Fund and J-LEAD helped underwrite Ahoovim in 2013. “This program has given a warm sense of Jewish belonging and identity to our community’s most wonderful demographic,” says Kollel rabbi Binyomin Davis. 18 participants were served in 2013.

Engaging Teens The B’nai Tzedek program encourages Bar and Bat Mitzvah students to become involved in tzedakah by establishing a fund for Jewish charitable giving. Opening a B’nai Tzedek fund gives teens a chance to play a part in improving their community and the world. At the annual B’nai Tzedek Shuk, teens meet representatives from community organizations and learn about how their charitable contribution can make a difference. In 2013, B’nai Tzedek fundholders granted a total of $20,130. More than $156,000 has been granted since the program’s inception in 2001.

CREATE A JEWISH LEGACY Create a Jewish Legacy is JCF’s effort to continue the momentum begun with the Bushman Community Endowment (BCE) program. BCE, launched in 2007, was established as a way to help local Jewish agencies and congregations learn ways to better cultivate planned giving, thus allowing them to build their permanent endowments and keep their vital programs flourishing. “As a result of our partnership with the Foundation through the BCE program, we have seen an increase in the number of donors who are creating long-term plans to support Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy…ensuring future generations will continue to benefit from our ongoing commitment to academic excellence and Jewish values.” — HOWARD M. HAAS, HEAD OF SCHOOL,

“Our parents loved their community and were very committed to it, having survived the Holocaust and finding a welcoming home in Kansas City. It is with much pride that we have created this Jewish legacy in their honor. Our commitment to the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education will help secure that stories and lessons about the Holocaust be taught to future generations.” – EVY AND LOWELL TILZER

“The JCF Trustees and Investment Committee have always taken a prudent and long-term view of the investment of our donors’ funds and the community has been rewarded with solid results as our growth in assets to nearly $200 million demonstrates.” — MICHAEL A. JEWISH HERITAGE FOUNDATION The mission of the Jewish Heritage Foundation is to promote health and general well-being in the Kansas City metropolitan area, with a priority to serve the Jewish community.

Village Shalom Exercise

The Jewish Heritage Foundation was created in 1994 as a private foundation to serve as a steward of the $29 million that resulted from the sale of Menorah Medical Center to Health Midwest. It remains deeply committed to Menorah’s tradition of healing and compassionate service.

KU Hillel Rock Chalk Shabbat

In January of 2013, the Jewish Heritage Foundation formally became a Supporting Organization of the Jewish Community Foundation while maintaining its separate and distinct Board of Directors. The move to become a Supporting Organization was a natural outgrowth of the Jewish Heritage Foundation’s firm belief that collaboration is absolutely essential for the survival and effectiveness of nonprofit agencies. The elements that shaped Menorah Medical Center and helped it thrive – passion for excellence, reverence for learning, commitment to justice and nondiscrimination, and dedication to charity and acts of loving kindness – live on through the mission of the Jewish Heritage Foundation. Program and core grants are made in three primary areas: • Kansas City Jewish agencies • General community emergency assistance • Senior services in the general community

Jewish Community Center Heritage Center Art Show

Impact Beyond Numbers • Beginning with $29 million in 1994, the Jewish Heritage Foundation has fulfilled its stated mission by distributing almost $39 million to Kansas City area nonprofits, with the majority of the funds allocated for Jewish agencies and programs. • Through the grant making process, Jewish Heritage Foundation has served over 400 Kansas City agencies. • The Jewish Heritage Foundation fund balance at the end of 2013 was $38 million.
