As our program begins its sixth season at Boise State University, we are proud of our start and excited about the future. The

2010-11 season was the best to date, winning another WAC Championship and competing at our first NCAA Championships in just our fifth year as a program. As we embark on a fresh year and a new conference, we have set new goals as a team, and we are challenged and motivated to follow last season with another record-breaking year. Our staff is committed to establishing and ensuring an environment where motivated and talented student-athletes strive for excellence in swimming and diving and in the classroom. We will work together to consistently challenge for Mountain West Championships and earn representation and points at the NCAA Championships, while striving for even bigger goals of competing at the international level. For the women who have chosen to join our program, we are committed to help them: •Graduate in academic fields they care about •Develop as capable, independent young women who are ready to go out and make a difference in the world. •Achieve their dreams as swimmers, divers and students, and to do so as a team of excellence in all areas. It is a tremendous honor and privilege to compete for and coach at Boise State University. We know this is one of the best places to be a student-athlete and a coach. Big Splash Jan. 21, 2012

After a one-year hiatus, ‘Big Splash’ is back. Members of the Boise State football team will ditch their helmets and pads, and take their skills to the diving board to show support for the Bronco swimming and diving team. The appropriately-named competition is a fan favorite.

The only guarantee at Big Splash is an afternoon of fun and surprises. Creativity is also sure to be on display. Joe Bozikovich won the inaugural event with his “Happy Birthday Sushi” dive, only to be outdone the following year by Darren Koontz’ Superman impression.

Broncos Set Sights High in 2011-12 Head coach Kristin Hill and the Boise

State women’s swimming and diving team is back for another year of contending for a conference championship, this time in the Mountain West. After winning backto-back Western Athletic Conference Championships to close its first five years of existence, the program is poised to continue its ascension in the college swimming and diving landscape. The Broncos feature strengths up and down the roster in 2011-12, including in every class. They return 16 letterwinners from 2010-11 and welcome nine freshmen to usher in the new era of Boise State swimming and diving. SENIORS The class of 2012 enters its senior year as the most accomplished group of Broncos in school history. Five of the six seniors have scored at conference championships, while all of them have contributed to the Broncos’ quick rise and back-to-back WAC Championships. “Our seniors will lead by example,” said Hill. “It’s good to have four swimming seniors who know they can finish strong and know their best swimming is still ahead of them. Our two divers are great leaders as well. All of them lead the team in the right direction in a way any coach would ask for, without being asked. ” Amber Boucher, Amanda Burnett and Stephanie North took it a step farther last year. Burnett competed at the NCAA Zone

Diving Championships, advancing to the finals of the platform competition. Boucher and North became the first student-athletes to represent Boise State at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. “They’re loyal Broncos. It’s important that they’ve represented us at a national level, but even before then they were loyal Broncos and knew they wanted to take our program to a new level. They’ve done it and Boise State swimming and diving has been impacted greatly by it.” Boucher earned the first All-America honor in program history with a 12th-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Her time at the WAC Championships was the seventhfastest in the country last year, and she is the third-fastest returner in the event. North carried the momentum into the summer where she advanced to the finals of the 100-meter freestyle at the 2011 ConocoPhillips Summer National Championships. She clocked the 80thfastest time in the world at the time, and it still ranks in the top 30 in the U.S. this year. “Amber is in a great position to finish her collegiate career on a high note,” Hill noted. “Stephanie’s growths especially this summer are incredible. Having a world ranking is very exciting. I’ve only coached a handful of swimmers of that caliber, and it’s neat to have two of them here at Boise State together.” The duo is joined by fellow swimmers Emily

Irvin and Kelsy Diener. Diener specializes in the individual medleys and backstrokes. She owns the school record in the 200 IM after placing second at the 2011 WAC Championships. Irvin will help the Broncos in middle-distance freestyle events, breaststroke and the 200 IM. she has scored top-10 finishes in three individual events at each of the conference championships in her career. “Emily and Kelsy bring in a lot of experience and versatility. The biggest challenge for those two is determining where to use their vast strengths to help the team most. Because of their strengths, they span all of the different training groups we have. Every group has a senior leader they can look to.” Diener, a transfer from San Diego State prior to her junior season, brings a unique experience as the only Bronco to compete at the Mountain West Championships. The divers, Burnett and Tana Loan, look to finish continue making strides through the end of their collegiate career. Burnett and Loan each joined the Bronco diving squad with no competitive diving experience and have taken to the sport quickly. Head diving coach David Legler also points to the seniors to guide the rest of the team. “They are still relatively new to the sport, but they’ve been able to offer a lot leadershipwise,” said Legler. “They really set the standard for expectations of how the team is going to train, practice and compete. That is extremely valuable and trickles down to the underclassmen.”

Before the underclassman have to take the reins, Burnett and Loan have their own marks to make. “There is still a lot to be done in the pool and a lot of goals they can certainly achieve before the season is over,” Legler said. JUNIORS The Broncos return five members of the junior class, combining for 15 medals at conference championships in their careers. Now upperclassmen, Jenn Cahill, Shanelle Choi, Stevie Hughey, Lexi Pfeiffer and Christine Raininger will be asked to provide a bigger leadership role. Hill expects the diverse and talented class in the pool, will have no problem handling their new task. Cahill is the top distance swimmer in school history, holding records in the 500-, 1000-, and 1650-yard freestyle events. “Jenn is a leader for our distance group,” said Hill. “This summer she turned a corner as far as her desire to take her swimming to the next level. When someone commits to summer training like she did, it can really drive her into a whole new phase of her swimming career and that’s exciting.” Hughey enjoyed a breakout performance at the 2011 WAC Championships. She helped four relay teams to gold medals and added two more medals in individual events. She picked up silver in the 100 butterfly and bronze in the 50 freestyle. Choi also experienced the fastest meet of her career at last season’s conference championships. She set three career bests and will be looked to for help in the sprint freestyle events. “Stevie really is a great part of our sprinters and it has been fun as she expands to

200 free, as well,” said Hill. “Shanelle had great time drops last season and has more confidence than ever before. She has a lot to work off of after the success of last year. I’m excited to see her build off of that.” The only Bronco junior with an individual conference championship, Raininger, returns as the team leader in individual medley events as well as the 200-yard butterfly. She owns the school record in the 400-yard IM and is a qualifier for the 2012 Canadian Olympic Trials. “Christine has competed at a high level here and at home in Canada,” Hill said. “She’s been a conference champion and we would like to see her win events in our new conference and would like to take her to the NCAA Championships, which is a real possibility.” Pfeiffer is the lone junior on the diving board. Without much competitive diving experience before coming to Boise State, she has worked hard to get up to speed. A year after setting career bests in all three events, Pfeiffer looks to continue her growth in 2011-12. “She is another diver with little experience when she came in, but she has set a great example,” Legler said. “She’s been the first one in the pool every day and that has had an impact on the rest of the team. That boost in motivation and work ethic is just as important as having all of the top skills.” SOPHOMORES Though it may not be apparent in looking at the record books, Brooke Balogh, Ciera Cortney, Olivia Harrell Rachel Heaney and Chelsea Miller were freshmen last season. A year wiser, the contingent looks to climb even higher and bring the Broncos with

them. “Our sophomore class is a fun class,” Hill said. “There is a lot of talent and a lot of drive.” Balogh turned in one of the more memorable individual performances at the conference championships, setting five personal bests and advancing to the ‘A’ Final of two events. “Brooke surprised everybody at the conference championships with tremendous time drops,” Hill reminisced. “So, it’s fun to take her into this season and start from there. She had a lot of questions answered for herself last year. She is just tough and loves to race.” Harrell also experienced her best swimming at the end of the year, setting a pair of career bests in advancing to the finals of the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle at the conference meet. “Olivia had a lot of adjustments to make last year and has come back this fall with a really renewed sense of determination,” Hill said. “She has a lot of confidence in our program and we all know she will reach her goals this year.” For the third-straight year a Boise State freshman stood atop the podium of an individual event at the WAC Championships when Heaney took home the 200 butterfly in school-record time. “Rachel had great time drops and has a new level of confidence as a sophomore,” Hill said. “She is an integral part of what we will do this year and we will really lean on her even though she is young.” Another sophomore the Broncos have big things in mind for is Miller. record holder in the 200-yard breaststroke, Miller grabbed two medals at her first conference championships and made a bigger splash during the summer. “Chelsea made her first Olympic Trial cut early this summer and that takes a load off her back heading into this season,” Hill said. “It allowed her to see she is even better than she may have thought. We just know it will be fun to watch Chelsea this year because she has a lot to accomplish. A lot of those things will happen over the next three years, but I really see her being a viable candidate for NCAAs this year.” Cortney, already the most accomplished diver in school history, returns looking to build on her one-meter silver medal at the conference meet. “She has a lot of the dives we are going to be doing,” Legler said. “The big focus with her is cleaning things up and taking her dives from the top of the conference to the national level.” Competing on a national stage is nothing new for Cortney. She participated at the 2011 USA Diving National Championships. She also spent the summer winning the AAU National Championship on three-meter and finishing runner up on one-meter. “All of her competitions over the summer are really going to help her out,” Legler remarked. “Staying in training and competition all year is going to help with her consistency.” FRESHMEN Another year, another talented group of newcomers to the Boise State roster. Seven swimmers and two divers make up the newest bunch of Broncos with a diverse

and expansive background in a number of disciplines. “It’s hard to say who is going to stand out in this group,” Hill said. “We are really looking forward to what they can do in our training program. These girls all need something different and we work hard to make sure they get that.” Exemplifying the depth is Sydney Johansen, who the Broncos pegged as a backstroker but improved greatly in the breaststroke in her final prep season. Johansen narrowly missed her Olympic Trials cut in the 200 breaststroke, but also owns what would be a top-five time in the 100 backstroke at Boise State. “It will be hard to decide where to put her, so that will be fun,” Hill said excitedly. “Part of it is filling a team need, and part of it is allowing her to swim her strengths. She has a really good sense for her strokes and I’m just excited to help her make the breakthroughs that are sitting right in front of her.” Hill is looking forward to introducing a number of the freshmen to the Broncos’ training program and help them reach new levels. She points especially to Jessica Bottelberghe, Emily Campbell and Heather Harper in that group. Bottelberghe will help the Broncos in a number of events with strengths in backstroke, butterfly, freestyle and the IMs. “Jessica has been waiting for a breakout swim and I see that happening for her this year,” Hill predicted. “She’s really responsive to feedback. She is a great practice swimmer and we want to help her be a great meet swimmer.”

Campbell also brings a wide array of talents with her from Aberdeen, S.D., where swimming is not a high school sanctioned sport. “Emily Campbell is really untapped. She really has bought into the team aspect of being here. She is really confident in our approach to training. It’s obvious she wants to get better and will take any advice she can get.” Harper will be primarily a breaststroker. She also provides depth in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM. “She will get a lot of racing in this season, especially in the breaststroke events,” said Hill, who swam with Harper’s high school coaches growing up. “She is someone who will respond really well to our training. I’m excited to spend more time with her.” Another diverse talent in the newest class of Broncos is Emily Blasko. A freestyler out of Minnesota, Blasko comes to Boise State from Aquajets Swim Club, runners up in the team standings at the 2009 NCSA Junior Nationals. “Emily Blasko comes from a great club program so her training base is really strong,” Hill said. “She will swim anywhere from the 100 to the mile in the freestyle. She has a really wide range of abilities.” The class features two more swimmers who could offer an element of surprise for the Broncos this season. Megan Myers, a distance swimmer, comes in under the radar after switching her training focus to long-course late in her prep career. “Megan hasn’t swam short-course yards rested for a long time,” Hill said. “She’s a bit of an unknown as far as what her potential

is. We’re excited to get her in a short-course pool and racing for Boise State. She is really excited to be a part of our program. I know she has a lot of optimism toward this season.” The Broncos will also look to get help from Nikki Cannon, but it is unclear how much Cannon will be able to contribute this year as she rehabs from injury. “Nikki is going to be a bit of a wildcard this year as she works really hard to return from a freak injury,” Hill said. “We could certainly use her strengths in the backstroke and getting her back to that level is our greatest goal from her.” Not to be outdone, Legler and the divers welcome a pair of talented newcomers. Breanna Hemming and Erin Kohlbeck bring a strong diving background and a willingness to be coached. “They have lots of talent, lots of great fundamentals and a great desire to learn,” Legler said of the freshmen. “They are starting to bring a new life to things. They bring in more diving training experience to the team with their background in the sport.” A NEW MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB After rising from worst to first in four short years in the WAC, and closing out their fiveyear run in the conference with a secondstraight title, the 2011-12 Broncos face a new challenge in a new league. Boise State enters the Mountain West this season ready to take on the new test. “We would like to finish in the top three this year,” Hill said. “The Mountain West for swimming and diving is a step up from the WAC. We feel like top three in the conference

is a realistic goal. We have the personnel to win some events at the championships and we have a lot of people who could score big points.” While the Broncos may be comfortable with who will score big points, Hill is also aware of the importance of picking up smaller totals in the team title race. “The depth is stronger in the Mountain West,” she said. “Where we might have been picking up points in the ‘B’ Finals last year, those aren’t necessarily going to be there this year. Depth is something we have addressed, but we will have to stay on top of that in recruiting over the years to come.” The move presents a challenge on the diving boards as well, but it is one Legler is looking forward to. He has already seen a positive effect on practice sessions. “It’s a big elevation in competition, which I think is going to be really good for us,” he said. “It helps provide a lot of focus and drive in practices.” Hill is well aware of the improvements Legler and the Bronco divers have made, and knows they are up to the task. “We feel like our diving is better than it has ever been,” she said. “That’s going to be an important factor this year.” Boise State was picked by the conference coaches to finish second, behind defending champion San Diego State. THE SCHEDULE “The schedule really came together this year,” said head coach Kristin Hill. “We’re competing against some of our new conference teams, and we have some really good invitational meets set up. We have

some really strong opponents this year.” The sixth season of Bronco swimming and diving opens at home Oct. 8, with a dual meet against in-state rival Idaho. Duels against New Mexico and Seattle also fill out October and November. A trip to the Rice Invitational, Oct. 28 and 29, provides the first opportunity for the Broncos to compete in an invitational format. They will be joined by Arkansas, Houston, Nebraska and the host Owls The divers will head back to the Wildcat Diving Invitational, Nov. 18-20. The 2011 portion of the Broncos’ schedule wraps up Dec. 1-3, at the Missouri Invitational for the thirdconsecutive season. Nine teams, including the host Tigers, will join Boise State in Columbia, Mo. The Broncos return to competition at the end of their winter training trip to Southern California. Boise State looks to avenge its only loss of last season with a dual meet Jan. 4, at UCLA. The Bruins and Broncos will meet again, Jan. 7, at the San Diego Relays. The Broncos won the relay meet in 2011. “Being able to compete against UCLA twice during that week will be nice,” Hill said. “Our girls aren’t afraid to compete against top-20 programs and we will always keep teams on our schedule who will challenge us.” The dual-meet season wraps up with home competitions against Oregon State (Jan. 21) and Colorado State (Jan. 28). The return of Big Splash is scheduled for Jan. 21, when the Broncos welcome the Beavers to the West YMCA. After a year hiatus, members of the Boise State football team will once again take to the pool for a diving competition.

2010 & 2011 WAC Champions

The Broncos will honor six seniors at the final home meet against the Rams. “To come back and host Oregon State and Colorado State is an exciting way to finish out our season and honor our seniors before we head off to our new championship venue.” The Broncos’ first trip to the Mountain West Championships will be Feb. 2225, in Oklahoma City. Boise State will also be looking to return to the national championships. This year, the NCAA meet is March 15-17, in Auburn, Ala. “Our focus is our conference championships and the NCAA Championships,” Hill said. “We tend to swim really well in-season, though, and I love that about our program. We have swimmers who love to race and compete any time any place. Then they are still able to drop and have really worthwhile swims at the end of the season.” WORLD-CLASS BRONCOS Boucher and North enter their senior seasons after becoming the first Broncos to qualify for the NCAA Championships. They each swam three events at nationals, making Boise State one of just 36 schools to qualify multiple swimmers for the meet. The Broncos are looking to repeat the feat in 2011 and add to the numbers. The team will draw on the experiences of the returning qualifiers. “For them to come back and tell the team what NCAAs was like, is something a lot of other teams don’t have the opportunity to do,” Hill said. “There’s no reason why we can’t have more teammates join them there this year.”

Another mark of excellence in the swimming world is Olympic Trials qualifying times (cuts). The Broncos enter the 2011-12 season with five student-athletes already qualified for their respective Olympic Trials, four from the United States and one Canadian. Boucher, Heaney, Miller, North and Raininger attained or improved upon their qualifying times this past summer, firmly supplanting the Broncos on the national radar. “Having the cuts puts us in the top echelon of swimming and diving programs in the country,” Hill said. “Our goal is to be a top20 program within the next three years. To do that, you have to have ladies competing at the Olympic Trial level. So, it puts some weight behind our words.” North’s performance at the 2011 ConocoPhillips Summer National Championships added even more muscle to Boise State’s message. She became the first Bronco to reach a final at the meet, placing 24th in the 100-meter freestyle. “For us to say we want to be top 20 is one thing, but now that we’ve had girls compete well at nationals and we have trials qualifiers, it puts a lot more meat into what we’re selling when our recruiting focus is on competing at the international level.”

Cortney also participated at the prestigious USA Diving National Championships on one-meter. “That was such a great step for Ciera and for our program,” said Legler. “The hard work she has put in and we have been putting in here at Boise State is starting to show on the collegiate and national level.” LOOKING FOR MORE Boise State will look to add to its alreadyimpressive number of Olympic Trials qualifiers during the season when they compete at two long-course meters time trials. Olympic Trials cuts must be achieved in a long-course meters pool. The Broncos will swim in the 50-meter course Dec. 4, after the Missouri Invitational and also Feb. 26, the day after the MW Championships. “We have at least six swimmers who can qualify for Olympic Trials or earn an additional cut during the season,” said Hill. “We want to provide the right opportunities for them to get those, so that they’re not waiting for April, May and June. We want to have them well-prepared for the meet, rather than qualifying at the very end. It’s fun to go, but it’s even more fun to do well when you’re there.”

Hemming, a freshman diver, knows all about competing internationally. She spent a week in September at the World Triathlon Championships, in Beijing. Hemming earned one of three spots on the U.S. team and finished 28th in the junior elite division. Cortney also represented Boise State diving with a win on three-meter at the AAU National Championships over the summer and a runner-up finish in the one-meter

Kristin Hill enters her sixth season at the helm of the Boise State swimming and diving team this fall. In its first five seasons the program won back-to-back Western Athletic Conference Championships (2010 & 2011) and qualified two student-athletes for the 2011 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Hill was named the inaugural head coach for women’s swimming and diving at Boise State when the program was added June 27, 2006. In 2011 she was rewarded for her hard work, being named WAC Swimming Coach of the Year. Prior to starting the program at Boise State, Hill served as the assistant coach at nationally-ranked Texas A&M. While working with the Aggies, she worked closely with Olympic swimmers Christine Marshall (USA), Julia Wilkinson (Canada), and Triin Aljand (Estonia). Complementing her collegiate coaching experience, she has coached U.S. Olympic Trial qualifiers, summer national finalists and champions, Olympic competitors and Canadian national team members. Hill also gained international coaching experience in 2005 as she was a member of the Estonian National Team coaching staff at the European Championships in Italy. “Our athletic department at Boise State is one of the most successful, progressive athletic departments in the country,” said Hill. “I was given an amazing opportunity to build a program from scratch, and I would not want to do it anywhere else. Boise is a fantastic city, the campus is

beautiful, and our family is so excited to be settled in the northwest. I was excited to get this program started off on the right foot, and based on feedback from coaches and swimmers in the Northwest and around the country, it is clear that we are headed in the right direction.” The team has improved by leaps and bounds every season since its inauguration in 2006-07. After a 2008-09 campaign in which Hill and the Broncos saw school records broken in every event, just three of those marks stood throughout the championship 2009-10 season, and 22 more records fell as Boise State repeated as league champions in 2010-11. The 2010 title came on the heels of a sixth-place finish at the 2009 WAC Championships, then a program best. The leap from sixth to first is the second-greatest year-to-year improvement in WAC history. Only Hawaii, which finished eighth in 1998-99 and second in 1999-2000, rose more spots in the final standings from one year to the next. (That same season the WAC went from a 14-team conference to a six-team league in women’s swimming and diving.) The Broncos also became just the sixth different WAC champion in the 20 years the conference has carried the sport, and the quickest to do so from the time of the program’s inception. Boise State repeated in impressive fashion at the 2011 WAC Championships. The Broncos finished 13-1 in dual-meet competition, with the only setback coming at No. 23 UCLA, and carried fast times into

the conference meet. Hill guided the team to 10 event titles, including all five relay wins, and 20 NCAA ‘B’ times. The Broncos earned 57 allconference spots as they racked up 835 points to outscore second-place Hawai’i by 258 points. It was the ninth-most points scored in meet history and the largest margin of victory since 2003.

During the program’s five seasons, Bronco swimmers and divers have been recognized with 53 all-conference academic honors. Academics are heavily emphasized in this program, and the Bronco swimming and diving team recorded a 3.32 GPA during the 2011 spring semester to earn Scholar All-America Team recognition from the College Swimming Coaches’ Association of America.

The 2010-11 season ended with Amber Boucher and Stephanie North earning invitations to the NCAA Championships. Boucher, the two-time WAC Swimmer of the Year, became the first Boise State All-American in the sport of swimming and diving with a 12th-place finish in the 100yard butterfly. The 2008-09 season was a landmark year as Hill guided the Broncos to their first victory over in-state rival, Idaho, in a dual meet as well as leapfrogging Idaho at the WAC Championships. Boise State also crowned its first individual conference champion that season. During the 2007-08 season, the Broncos had outstanding improvement from their inaugural season, setting team records in every event and featuring nine finalists at the WAC Championships. They finished seventh overall, beating the University of San Diego and finishing just 64 points behind Idaho. The team won its first dual meets against Division I schools, beating the Air Force Academy during a road trip to Colorado Springs and San Jose State at home. Hill has proven to be an excellent recruiter as freshmen have played key roles in the yearly improvement at Boise State. In 2008-09 Amber Boucher and Stephanie North landed on the medal podium at the WAC Championships in their first year of collegiate swimming, while North became the Broncos’ first individual conference champion. At the 2010 conference meet, the freshman class contributed to 273 points in helping Boise State capture the team crown. The following year was as impressive with freshmen combining for nine top-eight finishes at the conference meet.

in our program. We laugh a lot, but we also teach a great deal and hold each team member accountable. These things, along with our intense desire as athletes to work hard, improve and make a mark nationally as a program, will continue to set our team apart.” Hill served as an assistant women’s swimming coach at Texas A&M from 2000 through 2006. In her six seasons at College Station, she worked in all aspects of coaching with the Aggie program, including on-deck coaching in the water, dry-land training, recruiting, program budgeting, administration and coordination of team travel. Hill helped the Aggies to their highest dual-meet ranking (eighth) and an 11th-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships. While at Texas A&M she coached 17 All-Americans, nine academic All-Americans and one USA Swimming National Champion. Over her six-year tenure at Texas A&M, the Aggie women posted a dual meet record of 53-18, which marked the best record over a six-year span in school history. Before arriving in College Station, Hill was the head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., for three seasons (1997-2000). During the 1999-00 season, the teams set 22 school records and she coached one honorable mention All-American. In addition to her coaching role, she was also the assistant director of admissions for the university from 1998 through 2000. Hill swam for the University of Puget Sound from 1990 through 1994 where she qualified for the NAIA National Championships all four seasons and was a 25-time NAIA All-American. She was a conference champion in the 50-yard freestyle in 1992, and she placed in the top five at the

national championships in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events all four of her collegiate career. Hill also advanced to nationals as a member of all five relay teams her sophomore, junior and senior years at Puget Sound. In addition, she was an NAIA Academic All-American in 1993 and 1994, and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honorary Scholastic Fraternity. She graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Puget Sound in 1994. Immediately after graduating, Hill pursued a master’s degree at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. While attending graduate school, she worked as a graduate research fellow for the International Center for Aquatic Research at the Olympic Training Center. Hill had the opportunity to work with many elite athletes, including the 1996 U.S. Olympic swimming team. From 1994 to 1997, Hill was an age group coach for the Colorado Springs Swim Team. She also coached the Manitou Springs High School swim team in 1996. In 1997 she received her Masters degree in basic science with an emphasis in exercise physiology. Hill grew up swimming in the northwest, training and competing with the Bellevue Club (Bellevue, Wash.) and Chinook Aquatic Club (Mercer Island, Wash.). Her swimming career began in Southern California in 1982, where she swam for the Mission Viejo Nadadores. Hill is married to Jason Hill who graduated from the University of ColoradoDenver with a bachelor of arts in political science. He received his nursing degree in Bryan, Texas from Blinn College. Jason is a registered nurse at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise. Jason and Kristin have a son, Luke Watson Hill, who was born in December 2004 and a daughter, Julia Louise Hill, who was born in May 2007.

Justin Brosseau Assistant Swimming Coach Fourth Year Missouri State, 2007

Justin Brosseau enters his fourth season as assistant women’s swimming and diving coach at Boise State University. Head swimming and diving Coach Kristin Hill hired Brosseau in July of 2008. In just his second year in Boise, Brosseau helped the Broncos claim the program’s first WAC championship and in 2011 repeated the feat.

“Justin is an integral part of our coaching staff,” said Hill. “He is a young talented coach who relates well to the women on our team and also offers a lot of knowledge both in technique and in the most effective training methods. He is positive, hard working, dedicated and organized.” Brosseau has seen the Broncos claim two conference titles and send two student-athletes to the 2011 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The second championship came in dominant fashion as the team took 10 event titles, including all five relays, and 20 NCAA ‘B’ times. The Broncos earned 57 all-conference spots as they racked up 835 points to outscore second-place Hawai’i by 258 points. It was the ninth-most points scored in meet history and the largest margin of victory since 2003. In his first year, Brosseau helped the Broncos to their best finish at the WAC Championships in the program’s three year history. The Broncos also crowned their first WAC Champion en route to their sixth place finish. Under Brosseau, the Broncos continued to rewrite the record books and improve immensely.

Brosseau joined the Bronco family in 2008 after spending the previous season as a volunteer assistant coach for Drury University under coach Brian Reynolds. While at Drury, the women’s team finished second at the NCAA-II Championships while the men’s team won its fourth-consecutive title. In addition to his responsibilities at Drury, Brosseau served as

an assistant coach for Springfield (Mo.) Aquatics since 2005. During his tenure at Springfield, he coached and worked with Missouri Valley LSC Top 8 swimmers, sectional qualifiers, Missouri State high school champions, junior national qualifiers, and NCAA Division II national champions. As a team, Springfield Aquatics finished no lower than fifth at the Missouri Valley Division I Championships during his tenure. Brosseau began his coaching career with the ASA Aquadogs (formerly Truman Aquatics) USA Swimming team in Kirksville, Mo., serving as head coach and administrator of the program from 2002 through 2005. He received his BA in English literature from Missouri State University in 2007.

a member of the Springfield Aquatics senior team, was multiple event qualifier at the sectional level and a USA Swimming Zone Champion in the 200 breaststroke his junior year. “I am honored to have the opportunity to work with Coach Hill and be a part of creating a tradition of excellence at Boise State,” said Brosseau. “This is a great university in a fantastic city, and the athletic department is very supportive of the program. This team has made great strides, and I am looking forward to helping Boise State swimming develop into a force at the conference and national levels.”

He achieved several NCAA-II “B” cuts during his career and is still ranked in the Truman swimming all-time top 10 in both the 200 breaststroke and 400 IM. In high school he was

David Legler Head Diving Coach Third Year Indiana, 2009

David Legler joined the Bronco Coaching staff in August 2009 as head diving coach. Legler competed for Indiana University and three-time Olympic diving coach Jeff Huber, widely regarded as the premiere diving coach in the nation. Legler’s first two years on staff saw dramatic improvements in the diving events. The Broncos picked up their first medal in a diving event at the 2011 WAC Championships and sent two student-athletes to the 2011 NCAA Zone E Diving Championships.

The improvements on the diving board led to a talented recruiting class in Legler’s first full season of attracting new student-athletes to the Boise State program. One of Legler’s recruits, Ciera Cortney, went on to compete at the Zone Championships in 2011 after a successful season. Cortney set school records in both springboard events during her freshman campaign, culminating with a silver medal on one-meter at the WAC Championships.

“David is one of the finest young men I have ever coached,” said Huber. He is a class act and you will be very impressed with his work ethic, his attitude and his knowledge. He will be an outstanding mentor for your divers and swimmers. You won’t find a better young coach than David.”

Burnett continued to improve and was named WAC Diver of the Week (Dec. 1-7) for the second time in her career. As a redshirt junior she improved her school-record score on the platform. She advanced to the finals on platform at zones. All four divers on the 2010-11 roster set career bests in at least two events.

Legler helped the Boise State divers realize, and exceed, their potential in 2009-10. The Broncos set a school best in points scored at the WAC Championships to help the team win the program’s first conference title in just its fourth year of existence. Other achievements during Legler’s first season in Boise included: Amanda Burnett becoming the first diver to reach the finals at the WAC Championships where she set a school record in the platform; and Burnett became the first Bronco to earn WAC Diver of the Week (Jan. 23-31).

“The swimming and diving program has shown tremendous growth over the last few years,” Legler said. “The team continues to exceed expectations in the pool and the classroom and I don’t expect to see anything different moving forward. The athletic department is committed to the success of our program and we have an experienced athletic and academic support staff readily available to the team. Add in a great school, a fantastic place to live and the best fans any school could ask for, and Boise State offers an unmatched collegiate opportunity.”

In 2009, Legler earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business with majors in accounting and entrepreneurship from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He was a member of the Alpha Beta Honorary for student athletes who earned a 3.0 or better for dedication and success in balancing academics and athletics (2006, 2007, 2008). While at Indiana he spent five years competing at a national level. Legler had a successful career in the Big 10 that was exemplified not only by his athletic performance, but also by his personal character when he won the Sportsmanship award for the Indiana Swimming and Diving team two years in a row. He was a team captain and mentor during the 2007-08 season. Legler’s athletic accomplishments include top-three finishes on platform at the Big Ten Championships in 2007 (silver) and 2008 (bronze). The Big Ten Conference is known to be one of the top diving conferences in the nation. Legler was a Zone Qualifier in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships in 2008 by four-tenths of a point. He was a member of the USA Diving Senior National Championship Team in 2008 and was a USA Diving Senior National Qualifier in 2006 and 2008. Legler spent the last four summers as a coach and counselor at the Indiana Diving Academy camp where he gained valuable coaching experience and honed his skills as a diving instructor.

“David has been a valuable asset to our swimming and diving program,” says Head Coach Kristin Hill. “He took a brand new diver, Amanda Burnett, and coached her to a top 8 finish on platform at our conference championships. This was a great accomplishment in his first year as a college coach. David is a great communicator, he thrives on challenging tasks, and he’s beyond his years in maturity as a coach and a staff member. In just his first year with our divers he made a significant impact on the quality of our program, and it will be exciting to see him at work again this season with our student-athletes.” Legler grew up in Blue Springs, Mo. where he helped Blue Springs High School win the 2004 swimming and diving state title. He was also a member of Jayhawk Diving Club out of Lawrence, Kan., and competed in gymnastics for 13 years.

2010-11 IN REVIEW

2011: REPEATING AND THEN SOME After taking the Western Athletic Conference by storm in 2010, Boise State swimming and diving left a lasting impression in 2011. The Broncos started their final season in the WAC as defending champions and gladly accepted the challenge of having a target on their backs. “We knew that in the fifth year of our program we needed to perform at a higher level than anyone had seen out of us before in order to break through and no longer be thought of as a ‘start-up’ program,” said head coach Kristin Hill. “We broke through that, we are no longer in our infancy.” Helping the Broncos achieve a new level of success and respect were Amber Boucher and Stephanie North. Boucher and North finished the season by becoming the first student-athletes to represent Boise State at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Beyond performing on the biggest of stages, the duo consistently led the Broncos throughout the season, combining to win 45 individual titles on the year. Boucher and North were just a microcosm of the dominant season the entire 2010-11 Bronco team enjoyed.

Boise State tore through its regular season schedule to a 13-1 dual-meet record. Its only loss came at the hands of No. 23 UCLA. The Broncos piled up two wins against each Rice, New Mexico State and North Texas in the first month of the season. After a threeweek break from competition, the swimmers and divers split off in Arizona. The divers took part in the Wildcat Diving Invitational and the swimmers dueled with Northern Arizona. The divers were led by Ciera Cortney on the springboards and Amanda Burnett on the platform. Burnett set a thenschool record to finish third in the platform competition. The swimmers used a furious rally in the final three events to fight off the Lumberjacks. The Broncos swept the top three Amanda Burnett set the top five scores on the platform in school spots in the last two individual history in 2010-11. events and closed the meet with a relay win for a 162-138 win. December brought just one competition for the Broncos, a trip to the Missouri Invitational in Columbia, Mo. The Broncos posted 13 school records, including all three diving events, on their way to a second-place finish. They came in behind No. 25 Missouri, and in front of another Big 12 foe in Nebraska. Burnett bettered her mark on the platform and qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships in the process. Boucher did much of the damage for the swimmers, clocking four individual school records and adding to two relay marks. She was named WAC Swimmer of the Week for her efforts, one of her three weekly honors on the year.

The Broncos opened the new calendar year against the UCLA, Jan. 7, in Los Angeles. Boise State claimed five event wins, including

two from North, but it was not enough to pull off the upset. The nationally-ranked Bruins held on for the 178-116 win. Boise State rebounded two days later with a victory at the San Diego Relays. In its final two weekends of the dual-meet season, Boise State swimming and diving staked its claim to the unofficial title as Northwest Champions. With dual-meet wins against Washington State (Jan. 21), Idaho (Jan. 22), Seattle (Feb. 5) and Oregon State (Feb. 5), the Broncos defeated each Division I swimming program in Idaho, Oregon and Washington. “One of our goals is to be the premiere swimming and diving program in the Northwest,” Hill said. “Right now we are on the right track.” The track the Broncos were on at the end of the year did not slow down as they carried the momentum into the 2011 WAC Championships. At the conference meet in San Antonio, Boise State blew the competition out of the water on its way to repeating as champions. The Broncos racked up 835 points, winning by 258 points. It was the largest margin of victory at the WAC Championships since 2003, and the ninth-highest point total in meet history. All of the superlatives led Hill to be named the WAC Swimming Coach of the Year.

The Broncos finished third or better in every swimming meet and took home a diving medal for the first time in school history. Boucher led the charge, winning every event she was entered in. She claimed gold in the 50and 100-yard freestyles and 100-yard butterfly. She also guided four relay teams to victory, including leading off the 800-yard freestyle team Amber Boucher was named WAC with a school record for Swimmer of the Year for the second- the 200-yard freestyle. She straight season. was named WAC Swimmer of the Year for the secondconsecutive season. Boucher was joined on the podium in the 50 free by teammates North (second) and Stevie Hughey (third) for a Boise State sweep of the medals. North won the 200 free and was also a member of four winning relays. Freshman Rachel Heaney took home the Broncos’ fifth individual title with a win in the 200-yard butterfly. The Broncos won all five relays, the first team to accomplish the feat at the WAC Championships since 2003. Cortney joined the podium barrage with a career day in the onemeter. She tallied a 288.75 in the finals to climb the leader board and finish second. The end result was thanks to a collection of incredible individual performances. Boise State rewrote record book after record book at the conference meet. The Broncos bettered the school records in all 19 swimming events and one diving event. Six Palo Alto Natatorium Pool records fell by Boise State’s doing. The champions also claimed three meet records on their way out of the conference. Among the record-setting performances were particularly special times from Boucher and North. Boucher and North became the first Broncos to qualify for the NCAA Championships. the first Bronco All-American by finishing 12th in the 100-yard butterfly, scoring the first points for Boise State at nationals. Her five-point swim gave the Broncos a 39th-place finish in their first trip to the NCAA Championships.

“Everybody did a great job coming in ready to work and really focusing on corrections,” said head diving coach David Legler. “I pushed them really hard at the beginning so they would be diving their best at the end of the year.”

Boucher finished the season as one of the nation’s best swimmers. She ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA in four individual events, including the seventh-fastest time nationally in her best event, the 100 butterfly. The junior also guided four Bronco relay teams to top-30 times in the country.

The end of the year was just a new beginning for Legler and the divers. All four divers from the 2010-11 squad will return and are joined by two heralded freshmen.

In addition to the monumental swimming accomplishments, Bronco divers showed great strides in 2010-11. Burnett and Cortney continued to lead Boise State diving to new heights. The pair became the first Broncos to compete at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Burnett advanced to the finals in the platform competition, placing 11th. Cortney posted a career-best score on the platform to finish 14th in the preliminary round and just miss the finals. Cortney also placed 25th on the one-meter and 30th in the three-meter competition. Burnett was just behind Cortney on one meter, finishing 26th.

On the swimming side, 12 letterwinners return. Though Hill’s first recruiting class is now graduated, the future is as bright as ever for Boise State swimming and diving. With a move to the Mountain West, 2012 promises to bring new challenges as well as new goals for an already accomplished program looking to take its next big step.

BRONCO SWIMMING AND DIVING FACILITIES

BOISE-WEST FAMILY YMCA AND AQUATIC CENTER The West Family YMCA and Boise City Aquatic Center was built in 1995 and is located near Chinden Boulevard and Cloverdale Road. This facility is a unique partnership between the YMCA and the City of Boise. The Aquatic Center is owned by the City and is operated by the YMCA. The Boise State University pool is a six-lane, 25-yard indoor facility with an attached deep well.

About the Mountain West... From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Now in its 13th year, the MW has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics. The Mountain West has marked several achievements over its first 12 years of existence, most notably becoming the first to establish a sports television network dedicated solely to an intercollegiate athletic conference (The Mtn.). The Mountain West also was the first to experiment with the coaches’ challenge in the college football instant replay system, and was the first non-automaticqualifying BCS conference to participate in four BCS bowl games, winning three. Additionally, the Mountain West was the first conference to have a member institution with No. 1 overall picks in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year (Utah’s Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut, respectively in 2005). With San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg claiming the No. 1 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the Mountain West is one of two conferences to have the No. 1 selection in each of the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts since the MW was founded in 1999. In 2011-12, the Mountain West will be among the first conferences to implement a leaguewide state-of-the art basketball instant replay system. The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders three MW institutions (Air Force, newest member Boise State and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of TCU. The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. TCU re-joined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. Effective July 1, 2011, Boise State University became the newest member. California State University, Fresno and the University of Nevada, Reno will join the Mountain West effective July 1, 2012. Also on July 1, 2012, the University of Hawai‘i will become a football-only member of the Conference. When the Mountain West officially began operations on July 1, 1999, the new league had in place a seven-year contract with ESPN, giving the broadcaster exclusive national television rights to MW football and men’s basketball, and three-year agreements to send the league’s football champion to the Liberty Bowl and a second team to the Las Vegas Bowl. Commissioner Craig Thompson also arranged a third bowl tie-in each of the first three seasons (1999 Motor City, 2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans) before securing a four-year deal with the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco in 2002. Entering the 2011 season, the MW has four contracted bowl affiliations – the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, San Diego Country Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl and Gildan New Mexico Bowl. An innovator in the postseason bowl structure, the MW engineered many “firsts,” as league teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games (2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans, 2002 San Francisco (Emerald), 2005 Poinsettia, 2006 New Mexico), as well as placing the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS team into a BCS bowl game with Utah’s appearance in the 2005 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
