It was a year of history. It was another year of records falling. Most importantly, it was a year of championships. The 2009-10 season will forever hold its place in the record books of the Boise State swimming and diving team as the first WAC Championship in program history. The Broncos captured their first WAC title in just their fourth year of existence. “Capturing a WAC title after only four years really exceeded my expectations, and I have high expectations,” said head coach Kristin Hill. “To accomplish that in only our fourth year was extraordinary and it was great to be able to honor the team we have built with the win.” The WAC title was an extraordinary achievement that was an appropriate ending to an extraordinary year that began on Oct. 9, 2009. The Broncos traveled to San Jose, Calif. for the WAC Shootout and showed the conference that they were ready to be contenders. The Broncos went 2-1 on the first day of the WAC Shootout, beating the defending WAC champs, Nevada, and narrowly losing to Hawaii. However, the Broncos beat out all three teams on the second day of competition to open their season with a 5-1 dual record. The Broncos never looked back from their hot start as they continued to sweep through conference opponents over the next four months.
“Our dual meet win against Washington State in October was very significant for our program,” said Hill. “It was the first time we defeated a Pac-10 team, and we won by a good margin.” November began with a weekend trip to the state of Utah for a pair of meets hosted by Mountain West rivals. Although the Broncos dropped both duals to the hosts (BYU on Friday and Utah on Saturday), the Broncos turned in some good times in the high altitude meets and came home with three more dual wins. Cahill also surpassed her previously set record in the 1000 free and earned WAC Swimmer of the Week honors for the first time in her young career. The Broncos returned home for a WAC dual with Northern Arizona and proved that their strong showing at the WAC Shootout was no fluke. The Broncos sent the Lumberjacks home with a 185.5-114.5 loss for the first time in program history as they took first in 10 events in the meet, including a 1-2-3 sweep in the distance events. “Both of our wins against conference rivals, Northern Arizona and New Mexico State, had a lot of impact,” commented Hill. “We had never beaten either team before this season and those wins had us starting to believe in bigger things.” The next trip on the Broncos schedule was to the Missouri Invitational where they took fourth out of eight teams. Bronco swimmers broke five school records during the three-day meet and Stephanie North took home the 100 free title to lead the Broncos. North broke her own record in the 100 free and once again was named the WAC Swimmer of the Week while Cahill broke the school records in the 500 free and the mile. Emily Irvin and Raininger also broke the school records in the 200 and 400 IM, respectively. The Broncos kicked off the new year with a trip to San Diego, Calif. in January. The trip began with a tri-meet with Tulane and San Diego State. The Broncos dominated over Tulane but fell short against San Diego State. Cahill continued to turn in recordbreaking performances with another school record time in the 1000 free. Amber Boucher also started to heat up with a pair of overall first-place finishes in the meet.
Several Broncos made their debuts during the WAC Shootout, including Jenn Cahill and Christine Raininger. Cahill earned first place points and broke a school record in the 1000 free, her very first swim as a Bronco. Raininger also recorded first place points on the second day of competition.
The Broncos also visited WAC opponent San Diego for a dual meet and handed another rival a conference loss. The Broncos took first in every swimming event except for the 200 back to dominate in the WAC dual and earn yet another conference win. Boucher was one of four Broncos to earn a pair of wins in the dual and was awarded her first WAC Swimmer of the Week honors of the year.
Next on the list of Bronco victims was Washington State. The Cougars made the trip to Boise and the Broncos sent them home with

a loss. The dual win marked the first team that the young program had ever beaten a Pac-10 team and Stephanie North received the first of the Broncos five WAC Swimmer of the Week honors.

Despite the 800 free relay title, the Broncos sat in third after the first day but quickly took the lead on day two and never looked back. The Broncos set four records and Boucher won her first-ever individual title in the 50 free. The third day produced many similar results as the Broncos padded their team lead. Boucher and Raininger each won an individual event and the Broncos also took first in the 400 medley relay while more school records were set. “Going into the last day, there really wasn’t anything that could stop us and that was a great feeling,” said Hill. Broncos won 15 of the 16 events in the meet and Boucher broke another record in 100 fly to earn her second consecutive WAC Swimmer of the Week honor. Senior Day at the West YMCA kept the Broncos rolling to end their dual season as they dominated New Mexico State for another WAC dual victory. The Broncos won 14 of 16 events in the meet to win 29 of their final 32 events of the season. The Bronco swimmers also strung together an impressive 23-event win streak that dated all the way back to the San Diego dual. Amanda Burnett led the divers in the final dual as she swept both diving events and earned the first WAC Diver of the Week honors in school history.
Nothing could stop the Broncos on the final day as they pushed their gold medal total to eight events at the WAC Championships as well as breaking 15 school records. North repeated as the WAC champ in the 100 free while Raininger captured her second title of the weekend in the 200 fly and the Bronco relay team took first in the 400 free relay.
After nearly a month of training, the Broncos were ready to take on the WAC at the WAC Championships and believed that they could compete for the title. “I would say it wasn’t until the last few weeks before our championships that I realized it was a true possibility to compete for the title,” said Hill. It didn’t take long for this special Bronco team to make history as the Broncos dominated in the 800 free relay to win their first conference relay title. It was a momentous achieve-

Amber Boucher was named the WAC Swimmer of the Year after taking first in the 50 free and 100 fly, second in the 100 free, and helping all three champion relay teams to their respective titles. “Since I began talking with our first recruited class (the class that has just completed their junior year), I have said that we will contend for the WAC title in our fifth year, which is their senior year,” added Hill. “To accomplish all this in our fourth year is extraordinary.” With the Broncos rising to the top of the WAC after just four years, there is no telling how much success will follow this young program as it continues to excel.

FACILITIES West Family YMCA and Boise City Aquatic Center
The West Family YMCA and Boise City Aquatic Center was built in 1995 and is located near Chinden Boulevard and Cloverdale Road. This facility is a unique partnership between the YMCA and the City of Boise. The Aquatic Center is owned by the City and is operated by the YMCA. The Boise State University pool is a six-lane, 25-yard indoor facility with a deep attached well.
“We have a nice facility on campus for training. It is a 6-lane 25 yard pool with an attached diving well that will give us the opportunity to do very short sprints and run diving practice with a 1 meter springboard and a 1 meter platform. The divers go to the West Boise YMCA three times a week for 3 meter practice. Until a new pool is built on campus, which will happen, we will also host our home meets at the West Y. It is an indoor 50 meter facility that is the best in the state, and one of the best pools in the northwest. The staff there has been so welcoming and just outstanding to work with. The CEO of the Boise YMCA, Jim Everett, was the person who first approached our athletic director, Gene Bleymeier, to talk with him about adding a swimming and diving program, and we are very thankful for his support. The Y also gives us the opportunity to have some long course training throughout the year which is important to help the women prepare for the long course summer season and reach their goals to qualify for Olympic Trials.�
