2010-11 Season Preview Excitement surrounds the Boise State men’s tennis program as the Broncos prepare to build upon another successful campaign in 2009-10. Head coach Greg Patton, who enters his 15th season at Boise State, has high hopes riding on a group of young but experienced players heading into the 2011 spring schedule. The Broncos return three players from last year’s NCAA tournament team that saw action in at least half of Boise State’s duals. Junior James Meredith boasts the most dual competition experience for the Broncos as he played in 27 singles matches at No. 1 a year ago, while also competing in 29 duals as a freshman. Sophomores Filipp Pogostkin and Jeff Mullen also earned valuable experience last season, as Pogostkin played in 26 singles matches and Mullen played in 17.

tournament, while also competing at the Blue Gray Classic which will boast seven programs that finished last spring ranked nationally.

the NCAA Individual Championships. Most impressively, Meredith showed he could compete with the nation’s best playing to a 9-5 record against ranked opponents.

Coach Patton will lean on a battle tested pair of juniors in Meredith and Damian Hume, to help guide the Broncos through their early season challenges. Meredith, a Christchurch, New Zealand (Christchurch Boys HS) native, is coming off a standout sophomore campaign in which he was named WAC Player of the Year. After finishing 25-10 in singles (20-7 dual) he also earned a spot in

Hume, originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, joins Boise State this fall following a stellar junior college career at Collin College in Texas. Hume capped his two seasons at CC by winning the National Junior College Athletic Association Singles Championship. He also helped lead Collin to the NJCAA National Team Title.

Perhaps the biggest test for Boise State this season will be sorting out its doubles teams after returning just one solidified pair from last season. Meredith and Mullen joined forces mid way through the 2010 season and excelled, playing to first-team AllWestern Athletic Conference honors. From there the Broncos will look to find the right combinations to improve upon a 61-53 (.535) overall doubles record last season. Boise State will get the chance to test itself early as the Broncos are set to spend the first two months of the season on the road. During that stretch Boise State will face eight opponents that qualified for the NCAA

Experience will also come from Boise State’s underclassmen this season as Pogostkin and Mullen will be called upon to help solidify the Bronco lineup in the spring. Pogostkin, a Bellevue, Wash. (Horizon Charter School) native, is coming off a solid freshman campaign in which he was voted WAC Freshman of the Year. He finished the spring with a 23-16 singles record after playing

Rounding out the group of upperclassmen for the Broncos are Erik Sheldon and Freddy Walsh. Sheldon, a junior from Phoenix, Ariz. (Mountain Pointe HS), will be in the mix for playing time this season after competing in 23 doubles matches and five singles matches as a sophomore. Walsh, a junior from Bellevue, Wash. (Newport HS), will also be fighting to break into the Boise State rotation after earning regular playing time toward the end of last spring. Walsh competed in singles in 10 duals for the Broncos, primarily at No. 6. He finished with a 12-7 overall record on the season.

2010-11 Season preview primarily at No. 3 and No. 4 for Boise State. Pogostkin also teamed up with Vicente Joli to earn second-team All-WAC doubles honors last season after playing to a 16-9 record at No. 2. Mullen, who joined the Broncos from Washoe County High School in Reno, Nev. last fall, will look to be an impact player once again after a strong second half to his freshman season. Mullen competed primarily at No. 6 singles, while also teaming up with Meredith at No. 1 doubles during the final stretch of the spring. He finished 16-13 in

singles and 22-16 in doubles, while playing to a 7-5 dual doubles record. Boise State returns one other sophomore who saw action in 2009-10 in Michael Gilliland, a redshirt sophomore from Leawood, Kan. (Hilton Head HS). Gilliland played sparingly during his redshirt freshman season competing in just nine singles and doubles matches each. He finished the spring with a 4-5 singles record and a 6-3 record in doubles.

to the mix this fall as redshirt sophomore Scott Sears and freshman Aidan Reid enter the season with no playing experience for Boise State. Sears, a London, England (St. Bedes) native, redshirted last season for the Broncos. Reid joins Boise State from Monument, Colo. (Lewis-Palmer HS) where he was runner-up at the Colorado High School State Championships as a senior.

GREG PATTON Head Coach 15th Season • 318-113 (.738) UC Santa Barbara, 1974

Boise State men’s tennis has become a familiar player on the national collegiate tennis scene thanks in large part to head coach Greg Patton, who enters his 15th season at the helm of the Bronco men’s tennis program. Patton has led Boise State to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and four Western Athletic Conference titles since the beginning of his second tenure in 2003.

as Kean Feeder and Meredith in doubles in 2009. While successfully leading the Broncos program for 14 seasons, Patton has captured many individual honors including being inducted to the Boise State University Athletic Hall of Fame (2001), NCAA National Coach of the Year (1997), Intercollegiate Tennis Association Region Coach of the Year (1994, 1997, 2004), WAC Coach of the Year (2004-07, 2009), Big West Coach of the Year (1997) and Big Sky Coach of the Year (1993-96).

Patton has put together an impressive 669-306 overall record as a head coach at the collegiate level. That success has continued through his 14 years at Boise State, where he has posted a 318-113 record while winning nine conference championships in three different conferences. Boise State enjoyed another successful season in 2009-10 as the Broncos earned a trip to the NCAA National Championships as an at-large selection from the tournament committee. Boise State strengthened its tournament resume behind nine wins over nationally ranked opponents throughout the spring. Their success against the nation’s best kept the Broncos ranked in the top-75 all season long, including a season-high No. 21 ranking in late January. Boise State ended the 2009-10 season ranked No. 42 after bowing out of the NCAA tournament with a 4-0 loss to No. 29 Florida State in the first round. Individually, Patton also coached several players to highly successful seasons in 2009-10. Patton helped sophomore James Meredith emerge as one of the up and coming stars in college tennis, as Meredith earned WAC Player of the Year honors en route to qualifying for the 2010 NCAA Individual National Championships. Patton also saw newcomer Filipp Pogostkin garner WAC Freshman of the Year honors, while the Broncos earned three first-team AllWAC honors and one second-team All-WAC selection. Since returning to Boise State in 2003, Patton has guided the team to WAC titles in four of six seasons (2003, 2005-07) as well as a WAC regular season championship in 2009. Patton has also coached numerous players to AllAmerica status during his tenure, including Clancy Shields in singles as well

meet the coaches Patton has been credited with turning Boise State into a national tennis power since his arrival in 1993. In his first season at the reigns of the Broncos, Patton led the team to its first conference championship since 1974. His success did not stop there as Boise State won the Big Sky four consecutive seasons (1993-96) and the Big West Championship its first year in the league (1997). During the 1997 season, Boise State was ranked as high as second in the nation and went to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships, finishing fifth in the process. Following the 1998 season, Patton accepted a position as a coach with the U.S. National team. Patton coached at the junior level from 1998-2003 leading the National Boys’ 14s to the 2003 World Cup Championship, defeating teams from Argentina and Spain in the process. Patton also coached the junior national team from 1984-87 leading many junior players to top five world rankings. At the junior level, Patton has helped groom some of the finest tennis players America has had to offer including Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, Michael Chang, David Wheaton, and Malavai Washington. Prior to becoming the head coach of Boise State in 1993, Patton coached at U.C. Irvine from 1979-92. During his tenure he led the Anteaters to nine Big West championships (1981, 1983-85, 1987-90, 1992) and multiple top 25 finishes in the final national rankings. He was named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1987 and was a five-time Big West Coach of the Year. He was elected to the UC Irvine Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. Patton played his collegiate tennis at U.C. Santa Barbara from 1972-74. His first job as a coach was with his alma mater from 1976-78 before spending time at CSU Bakersfield (1978-79) and then moving onto U.C. Irvine. Patton and his wife Christa have a daughter, Chelsea (19), and a son, Garrett (17). Chelsea is a sophomore on the women’s tennis team at Eastern Washington University. Garrett, who is a senior at Boise High School, is a two-time Idaho High School State Tennis Champion.

2009-10 season review

The 2009-10 men’s tennis season proved to be nothing short of exciting for Boise State as the Broncos experienced their share of thrillers en route to earning yet another bid to the NCAA Championships. Head coach Greg Patton began the season with a young inexperienced roster, but thanks to a grueling schedule he ended the year with a battle tested group. Boise State played its way to a 19-12 overall record, which included a dominant 13-1 record at home. Winning on the road came as much more of a challenge for the Broncos, however, as the men were just 4-6 in true road duals and 2-5 at neutral sites. Coach Patton might have known he was in for a season full of nail biters following Boise

State’s season opener against Oregon at home. The Broncos needed the third set in the final match against the Ducks to prevail, 4-3, securing Patton’s 300th career win at Boise State. The Broncos took their show on the road just eight days later for their first big test of the season; the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Boise State would wind up on the losing end of a valuable learning experience as the No. 21 ranked Broncos dropped matches against No. 26 Washington (5-1) and No. 27 Virginia Tech (4-3). Along with providing much needed trial by fire, the trip to national indoors kick started a grueling month and a half long stretch in which the Broncos would play at home just

Boise State

three times. The first opportunity to return home was successful for Boise State as the men scraped out wins over Utah State (4-3) and Weber State (7-0) to help recapture a bit of momentum before hitting the road. Over the next six weeks the Broncos would play to a 4-4 record away from Boise, which included just one set of back-to-back wins. The road traveled was far from easy, as five of those eight matches came against nationally ranked opponents. On the trip, Boise State managed wins at No. 70 Utah (6-1) and No. 45 San Diego (4-3). The Broncos finally returned to Boise on March 25 for some much needed home cooking in which the men would play nine of their next 11 duals at home. Boise State would

2009-10 season review take advantage of playing at home, winning eight of nine duals to improve their overall record to 16-9. During the three week home stand the Broncos recorded wins over Idaho twice (4-3 and 4-0), UC Irvine (6-1), Portland (6-0), Purdue (7-0), Montana State (7-0), New Mexico State (6-1) and Nevada (6-1). Their only loss during the home stretch came at the hands of UC Santa Barbara (4-3).

Broncos fate, but the NCAA selection would fall in favor of the Boise State men as they received an at-large selection to meet No. 29 Florida State in the first-round of regionals. The No. 42 ranked Broncos quest for a run through the NCAA tournament would end just as it began, however, as the Seminoles won the doubles point and three singles matches to score a quick 4-0 victory.

Midseason success would be pivotal in Boise State’s push toward postseason competition as the Broncos would have to finish the season with three road duals before heading to Fresno, Calif. for the Western Athletic Conference Championships. Boise State would manage a 2-1 record on its season ending road trip, which included winning a crucial dual at No. 28 Arizona, 4-3.

Although the season had come to a close for Boise State as a team, sophomore James Meredith earned an automatic bid to compete in the NCAA Individual Singles Championships. Meredith, who entered the tournament ranked No. 55 nationally, would get all he could handle in the first round being bracketed against No. 32 Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine. Meredith gave Beidas all he had but fell short of advancing past the round of 64 with a 7-6, 6-3 loss to officially end the season for the Broncos.

Next on the schedule for the Broncos would be the WAC Championships, which held a great deal of importance considering the men remained on the bubble for receiving an atlarge bid to the NCAA tournament. Despite a solid 9-9 record against ranked opponents during the regular season, a trip to nationals was far from guaranteed. After an opening round win over New Mexico State, 4-1, the No. 3 seed Broncos would next have to go through No. 1 Fresno State to earn a shot at the conference title and an automatic NCAA berth. Boise State fought hard but couldn’t find enough success to take down the Bulldogs, falling in the semifinals with a 4-2 loss. The loss left a great deal of uncertainty for the

When all was said and done, Boise State could look back on another highly successful year in which the Broncos made noise on both the conference and national level. Following the loss to Florida State at nationals, Boise State finished the spring ranked No. 42 nationally by the ITA. After starting the year ranked No. 22, the Broncos climbed as high as No. 21 on Jan. 26. Despite falling to No. 71 on March 16 Boise State never dropped out of the top-75. The driving force behind Boise State’s team success came from the consistent play of several individual players throughout the

season. Meredith’s success playing at No. 1 singles and doubles earned him WAC Player of the Year honors, while also being voted first-team All-WAC singles and doubles with Jeff Mullen. He was joined by several other teammates in receiving post season conference honors. Filipp Pogostkin was voted WAC Freshman of the Year, while also teaming up with Vicente Joli to earn secondteam All-WAC honors in doubles. Joli was also voted first-team All-WAC singles. The Broncos saw three players reach 20 or more wins in singles over the course of the season, including a 25-10 record by Meredith (15-9 dual). He was followed by Pogostkin (23-16) and Joli (22-15). Doubles proved to more unstable for Boise State throughout the spring, but once duals rolled around the Broncos did find some consistence at No. 1 and No. 2. Meredith and Mullen finished the spring with a 7-5 record at No. 1 doubles, while Joli and Pogostkin were a solid 16-9 at No. 2.
