BROMSGROVE

Welcome from the Director of Performing Arts

Such an extraordinary change takes place over the whole campus at Bromsgrove School in the Summer Term as it does every year and in so many other places throughout the world. The sun makes a huge difference to how we view the time we spend at school, often wiping clean our memories of the damp cold days through the Lent Term, and the bitter long nights at the end of Michaelmas. Just as the sun encourages new growth, so the Summer Term also gives way to great change and a chance for our younger students to blossom, no longer in the shade of their older colleagues who are on exam leave or contemplating fresh things in new places in the next stage of their academic lives.

Last term saw some of our very finest House Music and Drama competitions; these have gone from strength to strength in the past seven years and standards have risen ever higher with our Senior pupils. Highlights this term in Cobham and Routh are very much with our youngest students. Cobham Theatre plays host to Winterfold House Year 7 & 8 students – performing “Mary Poppins” – whilst finishing touches are made to their own new and updated performance space.

In a term of innovation, instead of a whole play, Year 6 present an evening showcase of highlights: dance, drama and solo music items based on all things new in musical theatre and film, whilst after

Half Term, we have the Fourth Form play “One Man In His Time” - a world premiere, devised by the directors and cast – that is being performed in promenade style around the school.

Prep school Drummers have their time in the sun during ‘Rhythm Fest’ in the middle of May while the Year 3 to Year 5 musicians present a culmination of their musical training in a strings and woodwind extravaganza in the second week of June.

The Pre-Prep have their own annual jamboree in Cobham; they will be performing a spectacular production of “Jack & the Beanstalk” just after Half Term.

Opportunities to spot new talent bursting forth in our youngest pupils abound throughout the Summer, but it’s also good to know that we can still admire the performing gifts of all ages in the fortnightly concerts that continue in Routh throughout the term. We say a final goodbye to our musicians in the traditional Leavers’ Concert in the last week of June, and there will, of course, be much music making at Commemoration at various points on the last day of term.

We look forward to seeing you, with our warmest Summer wishes.
