Love & Mercy offers a look into the life of acclaimed Beach Boys member Brian Wilson (younger and older self played by Paul Dano and John Cusack, respectively) during his days of stardom in the 1960s and amid his fight with mental illness some 20 years later. The film captures Wilson’s immensely strong and likable spirit as it brings a long sought-after narrative vibrantly to life.

Based in Headquarters, the control centre inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind, five Emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - are hard at work. When Riley’s family relocates to a scary new city, the Emotions are on the job, eager to help guide her through the difficult transition. But when Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind, Fear, Anger and Disgust are left reluctantly in charge.

Starring: Félix de Givry, Pauline Etienne

Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group of women fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa.

The story of four gourmands who, bored with their mundane lives, decide to end it all in an orgy of impeccable food, fine wines and some extremely accommodating women. Made in 1972, it still tests our limits of shockability, but behind the horror is a satire on life, the world and appetites in general. And [Spoiler Alert!] any film which features Michel Piccoli in a pink sweater expiring with a blast of wind has got to be seen. MovieMail

This ravishing documentary is Wim Wenders’s portrait of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, perhaps most famous for his shots of Brazil’s vast gold mines and their workers, and his coverage of the Rwandan genocide. THE WATER DIVINER (15) LONDON ROAD

(CERT TBC) 120m

MAGICIAN: THE ASTONISHING LIFE & WORK OF ORSON WELLES

GOING CLEAR: SCIENTOLOGY AND THE PRISON OF BELIEF

A troubled 11-year-old kid is plucked from poverty to be part of the National Boychoir Academy, but is initially resented by tough choirmaster Carvelle (Dustin Hoffman). It’s an inspirational drama with exceptional music and pitch perfect performances, and director Francois Girard (Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould) steers a sensitive line, always keeping the sentiment the right side of schmaltz.

Hailed as a groundbreaking work during two sell-out runs at the National Theatre, the feature film adaptation of London Road documents the events that shook Suffolk in 2006, when the quiet town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women. Using their own words set to an innovative musical score, London Road tells a moving story of ordinary people coming together during the darkest of experiences.

Electronic dance music is the rock ‘n’ roll of our time. And the jazz. And the punk. Whichever your frame of reference, EDM calls to mind stories of creative genius and staggering fame - but also of lives lost and abandoned in the night. Inspired by the experiences of her brother, Hansen-Løve gives us a fictionalised account of the French house boom that spawned Daft Punk, Cassius et al. With a loose narrative spanning two decades, Eden revolves around aspiring DJ Paul, as he helps put the so-called ‘French Touch’ on the world dance map.

AMY LOVE & MERCY THE CHOIR DEAR WHITE PEOPLE THE SALT OF THE EARTH EDEN INSIDE OUT

A clueless police inspector stumbles his way through a provincial murder investigation, in this shocking - and shockingly funny - change of pace from premier French auteur Bruno Dumont. Chuckles abound but the film never spirals into silliness. Wit and intelligence prevail in this absurdist, metaphysical murder mystery.

Fully restored, The Third Man returns to the big screen in all its glory.

MAGICIAN: THE ASTONISHING LIFE & WORK OF ORSON WELLES (12A)

Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent, Dear White People is a sly, provocative satire about being a black face in a white place. The film follows four black students as they navigate campus life and racial politics at the predominantly white Winchester University. Hailed as a “smart hilarious satire of the Obama age” by IndieWire.

“A lively and fresh retelling of the protean artist’s eventful life.” The Hollywood Reporter

A clueless police inspector stumbles his way through a provincial murder investigation, in this shocking - and shockingly funny - change of pace from premier French auteur Bruno Dumont.

Hailed as a “smart hilarious satire of the Obama age” by IndieWire.

MovieMail

Tyler James Williams

Starring: Bernard Provost, Alane Delhaye

Now, Wenders and Salgado’s son Juliano have teamed up to tell the photographer’s life story as he embarks on a journey to capture the beauty and grandiosity of those landscapes still unspoiled by human intervention.

Starring: Ugo Tognazzi, Marcello Mastroianni

Love & Mercy offers a look into the life of acclaimed Beach Boys member Brian Wilson (younger and older self played by Paul Dano and John Cusack, respectively) during his days of stardom in the 1960s and amid his fight with mental illness some 20 years later. The film captures Wilson’s immensely strong and likable spirit as it brings a long sought-after narrative vibrantly to life.

Tyler James Williams

Starring: Bernard Provost, Alane Delhaye

MovieMail

Acclaimed director Alex Gibney turns his gaze to Scientology in this tale of ego, exploitation and lust for power.

& Wim Wenders France 2014 110m

With English Subtitles

This ravishing documentary is Wim Wenders’s portrait of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, perhaps most famous for his shots of Brazil’s vast gold mines and their workers, and his coverage of the Rwandan genocide. Now, Wenders and Salgado’s son Juliano have teamed up to tell the photographer’s life story as he embarks on a journey to capture the beauty and grandiosity of those landscapes still unspoiled by human intervention.

Dir: Cédric Jimenez France 2014 135m Starring: Jean Dujardin, Gilles Lellouche

Academy Award-winning actor Jean Dujardin stars in this high-octane crime epic chronicling a violent six-year campaign to bring down the kingpin of a major narcotics ring. Director Cédric Jimenez hurls us back to the 1970s for a bold European twist on William Friedkin’s action classic The French Connection.

“Hardy and Theron make a dynamite team, but Theron is the film’s bruised heart and soul. So get prepped for a new action classic. You won’t know what hit you.” - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone Magazine

“A lively and fresh retelling of the protean artist’s eventful life.” The Hollywood Reporter

“A lively and fresh retelling of the protean artist’s eventful life.” The Hollywood Reporter

MovieMail

A clueless police inspector stumbles his way through a provincial murder investigation, in this shocking - and shockingly funny - change of pace from premier French auteur Bruno Dumont.

A concentration-camp survivor (Nina Hoss) searches ravaged postwar Berlin for the husband who might have betrayed her to the Nazis, in this gripping drama from leading German filmmaker Christian Petzold (Jerichow, Barbara).

The parents of 14-year-old Maria belong to a fundamentalist Catholic community and have raised her according to the tenets of their strict faith. At home she lives under the constant disapproval of her mother who demands ever-more painful self-abnegations from her. Filmed in 14 long takes corresponding to the 14 stations of the cross, this emotionally wrenching film is also a formal triumph.

Nelly and her young son Alexej escape from East Germany across the Berlin wall border to the West, but starting a new life is difficult as the Allied Secret Service question her links with Alexej’s late father, a suspected spy. This 70sset drama captures the paranoid tension of the time, and the determination of a mother to make a better life for her son.

Come in costume – as a character from the trilogy, as part of a human centipede (or just as a centipede) and win CASH prizes, including for best costume and person who travelled the furthest to be here!

It was a decade when seminal bands like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Scream, Void, Faith, Rites of Spring, Marginal Man, Fugazi, and others released their own records and booked their own shows - without major record label constraints or mainstream media scrutiny. With exclusive archival photographs, concert footage and interviews, Salad Days is a comprehensive, honest and insightful look at the DC punk scene from the early 1980s to the decade’s end.

FARE THEE WELL: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF GRATEFUL DEAD (CERT TBC)

THE FIRST FILM + DIRECTOR’S Q&A (PG) 106m

THE ECSTASY OF WILKO JOHNSON (PG) 91m

The First Film is filmmaker David Nicholas Wilkinson’s 32 year quest to prove that in October 1888 Louis Le Prince produced the world’s first films in Leeds, England.

In early 2013, ex-Dr. Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer. Given a few months to live, he recorded a final album, went on a farewell tour, and told the world that he'd never felt more acutely, joyously alive. But a funny thing happened on the way to Valhalla: the months ticked by, and Johnson didn't die. Director Julien Temple was there for the ride. The result is an uplifting exploration of how to live with impending death, and what to do when you're then sentenced to live. CIMMFEST

CIMMFEST

CIMMFEST
