STATION 5

In this senior- level course, students use critical thinking skills through research, writing, discussion and problem-solving. Emphasis is on the identification of a design problem that could be better met through more responsible design. Students choose a research topic with the instructor’s approval. Then the course is continued in a later quarter, to develop a viable and visual solution for the project researched prior to this course. Solutions incorporate environmentally sound, cost eective and responsible design methods from the use of evidence-based design.

The goal of this fire station was to give the design more of a residential feel. The men and women that work at the stations spend 1/3 of their life there. With this the intention of the design was to make these people see their station as a home. Designing with this concept came from evidencebased design. After research and interviews information was gained to fully understand what is needed at each station to make the employees comfortable.

The render below is a memorial wall that can be viewed near the entrance of Station 5. It is dedicated to the 2,977 people killed in the 9/11 attacks, 411 were emergency workers who responded to the World Trade Center. This included: 341 firefighters and 2 paramedics from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) 37 police oďŹƒcers from the Port Authority of New York City and New Jersey Police Department (PAPD) 23 police oďŹƒcers from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) 8 emergency medical technicians and paramedics from private emergency medical services

STATION 5

THESIS- FIRE STATION

Designing a commercial government building with residential design like qualities was done because of evidence-based design. The station also contains many sustainable materials, finishes and products. Station 5 is located in Huntley, Illinois. Huntley is currently expanding and there is a need for expansion within fire stations as well. The need for fire stations is extremely important in order to keep the public safe and be able to allow timely arrival upon emergencies. Station 5 gives safety to Huntley as well as providing public spaces within the station to be used at any time. Station 5 also has classes and open houses available to the pulic to inform them of the importance of fire safety. This fire station is branded with the logo and the floor plan is in a shape of a five representing the station number. Fire Stations have many traditions, such as red and green lights are placed outside the appratus bay doors. This tradition dates back to 1920, the colors represent navigation.

This two part class provides the time to properly research the needs for fire stations. Methods of research used include site visits, photo documentation, interviews, observations, behavioral mapping, literature research, analysis of documents, plans and drawings, as well as survey, demographics and statistical information. Codes and safety concerns are considered when designing the station. The use of wayfinding provides easy circulation. ADA compliant public areas are provided as well as the use of sustainable design. The goal is to keep the public safe while raising awareness by getting the public involved in educational programs.

BERRY

In this advanced course, the design of an upscale, global, corporate interior reflects the comprehensive synthesis of problem identification, research, programming, preliminary design, design development and construction documents. Problem solving centers on the creative and technical aspects involved in universal design of commercial environments including space planning with code compliance, wayfinding techniques and specifying corporate furnishings, finishes and materials.

This commercial environment is an oďŹƒce space for Berry, a social media group. The entire oďŹƒce reflects the theme through colors and materials that resemble colors and textures seen in nature. This colorful environment is a fun place for not only employees, but guests as well. It appeals to all ages, even though it is a teen directed social media website. This corporate headquarters shows the true essences of their theme within its design.

WHIRL

The Whirl Restaurant is located in the heart of Milan, Italy. This restaurant is inside of The Gray hotel. The dining area is located centrally to the hostess station. It is a private area for dining only. It features custom hanging tables supported by ropes. The tables are made with zebra wood that is seen throughout the hotel as a form of connection between the two spaces. The dining chairs are upholstered in white, with a gray pillow for extra comfort.

The bar was a completely custom design. The large bar was built to create a separation between the dining and bar experience. The bar area is clean and simple. The bar is finished in the same zebra wood that is seen throughout the rest of the restaurant. There are custom bar stools which are curved to follow the curves in the rest of the design. The custom bar at the end turns into a seating area for guest to enjoy drinks and conversation.

HORIZON

Students successfully completing this course will be able to use Computer-Aided Design software to assist them in their three-dimensional project development. Student will gain comprehensive understanding of the integration of computer technology into the design process and an introduction to BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology by designing a night club inspired by a continent chosen by the instructor.

This night club is a design inspired by the continent of Africa. Research of the country was done to gain knowledge of the design styles of the continent, along with other elements that are typical of the culture. Later then applying the research as inspiration to design a night club. The natural landscape and colors were used to create the warm environment that this night club has.

HORIZON

THE NIGHT CLUB

Africa has a vast majority of the world’s wildlife. The wildlife was used as an inspiration via patterns in Horizon, the night club. Zebra, leopard and girae print is used on the seating seen in the dining and VIP areas. The VIP area is located on a mezzanine level, which has a curved staircase as well as a glass elevator in order to allow the guests to be able to get to the mezzanine level. While on that level there is a cut out over the stage below. This cut out is the shape of Africa to show the significance of the continent’s influence. Both the first level and mezzanine level have their own bar and booth seating.

INTERNSHIP

DF DESIGN, INC.

This course is a monitored program for senior-level students to work part-time within the interior design industry. Field experience is an opportunity for students to apply and advance their knowledge, skills and professionalism under the supervision of a qualified mentor.

DF Design, Inc. is an interior design company run by Dennis and Chris Frankowski. They are committed to create timeless environments for the entire home and office since 1991. They work on interior design and remodeling for clients throughout Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin.

TURN-KEY EXPERIENCE

I was given the opportunity to be a part of a project from the early stages to the final end product. I worked with Dennis on a remodel of a garage. Before Dennis was called, in order to enter the home you had to first enter through the bathroom, Dennis reworked this and remodeled the garage in order to set the bathroom private from the entry. A laundry area was also added to this new space. I was able to see how Dennis works on a project and learn the steps that he took to create a beautiful finished product. I learned about construction and finishing, along with all steps in between. Lastly on this project, I created a punch list to finalize the project.

CLIENT INTERACTION

Through working with Dennis, I learned the importance of client relations. I personally was able to interact with the clients that Dennis was working with between each different project. Dennis shared with me his thoughts about client relations and through that I was able to see the importance that client interaction is within the residential field. I worked on helping keep open client relationships with past clients Dennis had worked with. I wrote letters to his former clients to keep that connection open, while learning the importance of it. By the end of my internship with Dennis I felt comfortable interacting with his client.

TRADE COLLABORATION

I was also given the opportunity to work with people of different trades. I worked most with the contractors. Working with the contractors side by side I was able to see how to properly work and talk to them. I learned the importance of this relationship between a contractor and designer, to properly express your ideas to a contractor, there needs to be a good relationship between the two people. I also learned that many times there may be a language barrier, but through Dennis I learned how to communicate with other people of the trades even with that barrier. I was able to work with vendors as well as contractors. I learned how to talk to them in order to make sure you get the proper materials that you need on a project. Having the chance to work with other trades was very beneficial because you need to be able to work as a team to get a project done correctly.

FIELD MEASURE AND CONSULTATIONS

Dennis meets his clients first through design consultations. I was able to shadow him on multiple consultations each varying in projects. I was able to see how Dennis interacts with his clients when discussing design ideas. I learned the important questions that need to be asked on each project and how to allow the vision of the clients ideas come alive. While on two different consultations I took field measurements for Dennis as he finished each consultation.

DECORATIVE PAINTING

Prior to becoming an interior designer, Dennis owned his own painting and finishing company. He is a very skilled painter and because of that he shared his knowledge of painting with me. I was able to work with him on a project and get hands on experience on how to paint a suede faux finish. This was a skill that I think was not only fun, but important to learn. He explained to me the importance of knowing as much as you can, not only in interior design, but other trades as well. Knowing about faux finishing can benefit me in the way of making sure it is being done correctly by a hired painter.

A special thank you to Dennis and Chris Frankowski for giving me the opportunity to work and learn with both of you. I am very grateful for the knowledge you both were able to share with me. What I was able to learn were the things that I could not learn in school. I learned so much about the world of residential design that I never knew before. This real hands on experience from my internship at DF Design, inc. is what I will carry with me and has made the biggest and most lasting impression on me through school. Again thank you for giving me the time and opportunity to work with the both of you.
