WHAT’S ON IN NORTH WALES Heritage in Denbighshire

International Photographic Exhibition at Bodelwyddan Castle

The Royal Photographic Society’s 155th International Print Exhibition will be hosted by Bodelwyddan Castle and Park from 23rd February until 7th April 2013. It is the longest running exhibition of its kind, having been shown every year since the society was formed in 1853. This is the first in a new programme of exhibitions at Bodelwyddan Castle which have been selected to reflect the museum’s reputation for quality and innovation achieved during its first 25 years. The 155th International Print Exhibition showcases some of the highest talent that the world has to offer. Each artist has chosen a subject that reflects the way they see the world. The exhibition includes a wide range of genres and photographic styles such as portraits, documentary photography, natural history and art photography. Sandy Cleland, the Chairman of Selectors, recognised the originality and impressiveness of what Bodelwyddan Castle is presenting, saying ‘...this exhibition always offers a uniqueness of approach seldom seen in other exhibitions.’ Lesley Goode, the Exhibitions Manager at the RPS, is delighted the show is coming to Bodelwyddan Castle for the first time: ‘The society is excited to be showing the exhibition at Bodelwyddan Castle, which shares the society’s ideal of combining its heritage with a forward looking vision which encompasses the contemporary world.’

Pontio Events

Heritage is about more than old buildings and museums! Denbighshire Heritage Services’s season this year will include some great events such as the Easter Saturday egg hunt at Nantclwyd Y Dre in Ruthin, the increasingly popular ‘Captured’ event at Ruthin Gaol, where you can get your picture on a wanted poster, and some lovely walks and nature events at Plas Newydd. There are also some great fun days at Rhyl Museum during school holidays. Over the winter, time has been spent time on restoration and repairs. At Nantclwyd Y Dre an investigation has begun into what lies beneath in the Lords Garden – almost an acre of overgrown garden behind a tall wall – known locally as ‘the secret garden’ – and a Heritage Lottery Fund grant is helping pay for a design of how the garden could be restored to open to the public for the first time. The Heritage Service also have birthday parties, open air theatre and even some spooky ghost hunts! Go online to www.denbighshire.gov.uk or call 01824 708274.

Thousands of people from around the world will again descend on the little town of Llangollen from July 9th as it celebrates the 67th annual International Musical Eisteddfod. Over the years the event which began as a festival of peace in the aftermath of the Second World War has grown into one of Europe’s premier music and dance events. It has attracted cultural icons like Dylan Thomas and the great Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who began his international career as a member of a choir from Modena at Llangollen in 1955. In recent years artists of the stature of Bryn Terfel, Katherine Jenkins, Kiri Te Kanawa, James Galway and Montserrat Caballe have performed at the final Sunday Evening Gala Concert. Most importantly the competitors have continued to come from all over the world – this year they will be here from Alaska, the Philippines, Russia, South Africa, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, China, India, New Zealand and Ghana as well as from all over Europe and the UK. The Eisteddfod’s blue riband event is the Choir of the World competition for the Pavarotti Trophy and Eisteddfod Musical Director Eilir Owen Griffiths said: ‘To have the Pavarotti name on the trophy puts it right up there as one of the top choral competitions in the world and where better to hold it than in Wales in the place where it all began for Pavarotti himself.’ Go to www.international-eisteddfod.co.uk
