Brighton Dome aims to bring the best in performance and art to the city and this season is a real showcase for that ambition. Dance legends Michael Clark, DV8’s Lloyd Newson and Belgium's Wim Vandekeybus rub shoulders with musical icon Underworld and lunchtime concert favourite Marius Neset who all represent our growing alumni of returning Brighton Festival artists. Together with an impressive theatre and family programme, including our contribution to the city’s SICK! Festival, this Spring represents the increasing aspiration of our programme. With recent news of major support from both Arts Council England and Heritage Lottery Fund we are on the threshold of an exciting time for Brighton Dome. Our aim is to redevelop our Studio Theatre, provide some much needed upgrades to our Corn Exchange, and enable the creation of new spaces for educational and creative purposes. This work will be the first phase of an over-arching cultureled development plan for the Royal Pavilion Estate andw its surrounding areas to help make Brighton & Hove a world-class destination for everyone. I look forward to seeing you at Brighton Dome this Spring and hope you’ll join us in supporting our long term future. Andrew Comben

This Last Tempest This sequel to The Tempest begins where Shakespeare left off: Caliban and Ariel are alone on the enchanted island, as Prospero’s ship sails out of view. In the hours that follow, the magician’s former servants are free to begin again, and they sing and perform wild tempests. As the storms rage around them, they conjure their own brave new world of spirits, monsters and inanimate objects brought to life. Part theatre, part gig, This Last Tempest draws on the company's collaborative approach to devise theatre and is a show for both those who know Shakespeare's play and those new to The Tempest. How was it for you? A gently interactive show about intimacy The thing about being intimate with someone is that most of it takes place in our own heads. And what goes on in there is impossible to know unless we talk about it. Written by Kefi Chadwick and Mark Maughan and specially developed for a preview performance in Brighton, this show explores our individual experiences of intimacy and sex, and how differently we all live them. But don’t worry, we’ll say most of the words. Snacks, drink and a comfy seat provided - at this alternative Valentine's experience.

Mark Thomas

Cuckooed Comedy’s elder statesman and all-round mischief-maker Mark Thomas tells his true story of how Britain’s biggest arms manufacturer, BAE Systems, came to spy on a comedian. Over the years, Mark has investigated everything from CocaCola to inheritance tax avoidance. He has stopped multinational infrastructure deals, given evidence to Parliamentary Select Committees and been arrested countless times. Cuckooed is his second one-man theatre show, which has already won a Scotsman Fringe First award, the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression award and a raft of five-star reviews. Mark will perform 30 minutes of stand-up before his impassioned tale of hubris, planes, demos and undercover deceit begins. Age 16+

Tim Crouch

I, Malvolio

Duration 30 minutes stand-up followed by 60 minutes show Produced by Lakin McCarthy in association with Traverse Theatre

Thu 5 Mar, 7.30pm Corn Exchange £16 (£14 concessions) First seen at Brighton Festival in 2010, Tim Crouch’s award-winning show has toured the world. Now Malvolio is coming home… and he’s as outraged and outrageous as ever! I, Malvolio is a charged, hilarious and sometimes unsettling rant from a man adrift in front of a cruel audience. Part abject clown, part theatre-hating disciplinarian, Malvolio asks his audience to explore the pleasure we take in other people’s suffering. This brilliant one-man show unlocks Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night to tell a timeless story of bullying, prudery and practical jokes. A show for anyone who has ever been told off or fallen in love with the wrong person.

Confirmation If you pinned me against a wall, I’d probably admit to being a liberal. Of course, pinning me against a wall is exactly what I’d expect from someone like you. This is a show about the gulfs we can’t talk across, about the way we choose only to see the evidence that proves we’re right: the phenomenon of confirmation bias.

‘Thorpe's dramatically charged show challenges our own biases and beliefs in a Ted talk-turned-passionate provocation’ Lyn Gardner, The Guardian êêêê

Written and performed by Chris Thorpe (Unlimited Theatre) and developed with and directed by Rachel Chavkin (Director of Catch 22, Brighton Festival 2014), Confirmation is an attempt to have an honourable dialogue with political extremism - to find out why we believe what we believe, and how we can end up so far apart. dubnobasswithmyheadman Live A very special live event to mark the 20th anniversary of the album dubnobasswithmyheadman. In January 1994 the band released their debut album on independent label Junior Boy’s Own. It arrived as a fully formed statement of intent – equally suited to the dancefloor and the after party. Although born out of club culture the album defied the accepted genres of the time. Two decades on from its original release, it’s unarguable that its one of the most influential British electronic records of all time – a signpost for everything from dance music’s easy relationship with main stages at festivals to the radio/globe-conquering EDM phenomenon. ‘First Aid Kit’s songs are as ancient as music itself, but as new as a freshly broken heart. Extraordinary’ Sunday Times Sat 24 Jan, 8pm £21.50 RETURNS ONLY

The Unthanks There are no easy one-liners to sum up The Unthanks. With an eclectic approach that combines traditional English folk with other genres, Tyneside sisters Rachel and Becky have collaborated with Orbital, Sting and Adrian Utley (Portishead) and have garnered an enviable roll call of celebrity fans. In 2012, they released three albums under the banner Diversions: a reimagining of the work of Robert Wyatt and Antony Hegarty; an orchestral adventure with Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band; and a soundtrack to a film about the ship

building industry. They’ve since been quietly working on their eighth album, supported by a major tour featuring a 10-piece ensemble.

Hailing from the Mandé culture of Mali, Trio Da Kalibrings acontemporary twist to the ancient traditions of the griots, the caste of hereditary musical artisans. From the soaring vibrato voice of Hawa Kassé Madyto the dazzling balafon solos of Lassana Diabaté, underpinned by the punchy bass lines of Mamadou Kouyaté’s ngoni, the Trio offers a rare glimpse into the soul of West Africa’s most sublime music.

Wim Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez

What the Body Does Not Remember The amazing debut of Belgian choreographer Wim Vandekeybus and Ultima Vez in 1987 stunned the world of dance at the time and won the prestigious Bessie Award in New York for this ‘brutal confrontation of dance and music’. Balancing on the razor edge of attraction and repulsion, Vandekeybus creates compelling sets of lines between the eight performers, whilst throughout there is an explosion of aggression, fear and danger. Rory Macdonald conductor Lambis Vassiliadis piano Humperdinck Prelude, Hansel and Gretel Chopin Piano Concerto No. 2 Dvořák Symphony No. 8

After the dark clouds of his Seventh Symphony, Dvořák articulated his enchantment with human existence in his blissful Eighth - a work overflowing with joyous fanfares that vividly captures the beauty of the natural world. He was soon snapped up by a New York music college, far from his Czech homeland. A similar intention lay behind Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto. With its easy elegance and pruned sophistication, Chopin hoped to endear himself to the opinion-forming concertgoers of Paris, many miles from his native Warsaw. Rory Macdonald opens this concert with the unmatched musical magic of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel Prelude. Sat 17 Jan, 7.30pm Jaime Martín conductor Andreas Brantelid cello Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet (Fantasy Overture) Elgar Cello Concerto Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade

When his older brother started sending letters home from his naval adventures in the Far East, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov fell in love with the faraway land he’d never see. The composer eventually made it as far as Istanbul on a family holiday, but his spellbinding orchestral adventure after The Arabian Nights, perhaps the greatest piece of musical storytelling ever crafted, was as great a tribute to his beloved Orient as anyone could hope to make. Hear his sultry, dramatic portrayal of Sultana Scheherazade’s stories alongside Tchaikovsky’s own slice of orchestral fantasy and Elgar’s noble but fierce Cello Concerto. Lord Berners Fantaisie Espagnole Walton Cello Concerto Holst The Planets Op.32

Haydn and Mozart did more than any other composers of the Classical Period to develop the symphony and the concerto. Haydn’s sense of humour and joie de vivre are given full rein in Symphony No.83, nicknamed La Poule (The Hen) after an audience member at the first performance observed that the oboe figure of the first movement sounded like hens clucking. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.27 was first performed in 1791, the year of Mozart’s death, and was to be the last work that Mozart himself performed.

Stephen Bell returns to conduct another programme of favourites, which begins with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, written in 1810 as incidental music to Goethe’s play of the same name. The long, expansive lines and soaring slow movement of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1 have made it one of the most romantic violin concertos, performed here by rising star Tamsin Waley-Cohen, winner of the Royal Overseas League String Prize 2005. By contrast, Sibelius evokes the starker atmosphere of his native Finland in the intensely nationalistic fervour of his Symphony No.1.

We start 2015 with two giants of the orchestral repertoire. It is well known that Brahms was in awe of Beethoven for much of his early life and yet his Piano Concerto No.1, written in 1859, breaks new ground stylistically, harmonically and rhythmically, so much so that the audience hissed the first performance in Leipzig. Conversely, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony was so popular at its first performance that it had to be repeated immediately, and Beethoven himself considered it to be one of his best works. The final concert of the season pulls out all the stops with Gustav Holst’s eternally popular suite The Planets, written during the First World War. Sir William Walton’s Cello Concerto, written in 1956, is one of his most original and atmospheric compositions, recorded by many of the great cellists and performed here by soloist Raphael Wallfisch. Many will not have heard of Walton’s friend, the eccentric Lord Berners, whose ballet music and songs have a distinctly ironic touch. Sun 22 Mar, 2.45pm

Mozart Serenade No. 10 in B-flat major, for 13 winds ‘Gran Partita’

No Coffee Concert season is complete without the ever-popular Heath Quartet, Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival’s resident string quartet. Here they bring a programme that includes Bartók’s poignant first String Quartet, inspired in part by his unrequited love for violinist Stefi Geyer. Beethoven’s much-revered String Quartet No. 14 is one of his final completed works: upon hearing its melancholy sentiment, Schubert is said to have remarked, ‘After this, what is left for us to write?’ The concert begins with Hugo Wolf’s lively and optimistic Italian Serenade. Sun 18 Jan, 11am

Lutyens Oboe Quartet Op. 81, ‘Driving out the Death’

Senior students of the Royal College of Music form a lineup of rare talent to perform a programme that includes one of the most monumental yet leastheard works of the chamber much repertoire. Brighton Dome Organ Showcase It was Douglas Reeve who made Brighton Dome’s theatre organ famous through his wartime BBC Light Programme broadcasts. There was not a seat to spare at his Tuesday at the Dome shows, which ran for a record-breaking 1,600 performances, and audiences would flock to hear him perform his signature tune, Pack Up Your Troubles.

Michael Maine Best known for his tenure as Director of Music at Hove Parish Church and St Christopher's School, Michael is largely responsible for Brighton Dome’s historic organ surviving to this day. A regular on BBC Radio 2’s The Organist Entertains, enjoy this renowned musician as he puts it though its paces. Mon 19 Jan, 3pm

Michael Wooldridge A versatile musician, Michael will take you on a tour through his life in music, from big band favourites to musical theatre. Among his many achievements, Michael has performed on the mighty 5-manual Compton at London’s Leicester Square Odeon in the presence of Prince Charles.

The John Mann Music Show

As Easter beckons, Brighton Festival Chorus returns to Brighton Dome for a special ‘in the round’ performance of JS Bach’s glorious St John Passion.

Brighton-born entertainer John Mann revives a bygone era made famous by his idol Douglas Reeve. John made his first broadcast in 1968 and has since earned an enviable international reputation as an eminent organist with a unique talent for evoking the heyday of Music Hall and light entertainment. Mon 2 Mar, 3pm

First performed in Leipzig on Good Friday 1724, Bach’s powerfully meditative interpretation of the Gospel of St John is a work of startling immediacy yet subtle nuance, recreating the psychological and emotional conflict of Christ’s final days before his public trial and crucifixion. Bach’s dramatic vision is brought vividly to life in this intimate Proms-style performance, which takes the singers in and amongst the audience. Ticket holders will also be able to attend a free workshop on Sat 21 Mar at St George’s, Kemptown to learn more about the St John Passion and the chorales that will be sung - see brightondome.org for details
