The towns of Maine’s MidCoast region offer a surprising mix of New England tradition and modern eclecticism, and are linked by scenic Coastal Route 1. The region extends from Brunswick, (approximately 20 miles north of Portland) at the southern end, along the coast northeast to Searsport on Penobscot Bay. Long a place of inspiration and beauty, Maine’s coastal towns welcome visitors to watch the action at their working harbors, where private and commercial fishing boats move in and out among pleasure boats, whale-watch cruise boats, day sails, and kayak tours.

Coastal Communities Brunswick is the southern gateway to the MidCoast region. Home to

venerable Bowdoin College, the downtown combines college town charm with sophisticated touches. The Theater Project, tucked behind Maine Street, offers edgy contemporary works when it’s not producing children’s and teen productions. During the summer months, Maine State Music Theatre brings Broadway to the coast and the Bowdoin International Music Festival presents world-class performances of classical music. An outdoor mall hosts a large farmers market and weekly concerts in the gazebo. Next to the mall are Maine Street’s many restaurants and coffee shops, and the museum home of Civil War hero Joshua Chamberlain. To the east is Bath , an historic shipbuilding city, home to Bath Iron Works, the Maine Maritime Museum and the Chocolate Church Arts Center, an historic building converted to a performing arts center. The compact downtown district of renovated Victorian era buildings and brick sidewalks on one-way streets creates a shopper-friendly outdoor mall, with varied restaurants, boutiques and shops, including a lower Front Street “antiques row”. Graceful ship’s captain’s mansions line the riverfront to the north.

In Boothbay Harbor, the boatbuilding and commercial fishing industries blend well with boutiques, galleries, a terrific old opera house, candlepin bowling alley and good restaurants. Outdoor enthusiasts will find bird watching and whale watching tours, boating, hiking and kayaking, or can wander the paths of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Kids will love the Maine State Aquarium, complete with a shark-petting tank. Nestled along the Damariscotta River, the town of Da m ariscotta is home to galleries, shops, a variety of good restaurants, nature preserves, and historic points of interest including the colonial era Fort William Henry and Pemaquid Lighthouse. The Damariscotta is famous for its oysters, celebrated at an annual Oyster Festival; hikers can visit the oyster midden at a centuries old Native American summer encampment. Continuing north to Rockland, visitors will find two nationally recognized institutions, the Maine Lighthouse Museum and Farnsworth Art Museum; a vibrant shopping district; a coffee roaster; award winning chefs; and ferry service to North Haven and Vinalhaven, small island communities with large summer populations. Nearby, the charming town of Ca mden lies between Camden Hillls State Park and Penobscot Bay, where modern sailboats glide past 19th-century windjammers. Made famous as the setting of the movie â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peyton Placeâ&#x20AC;?, the picturesque village waterfront downtown meets white picket fence-lined streets under a canopy of green. A Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist resides here and Julia Child was once a frequent guest. A 20-minute drive north from Camden past art galleries and through the rolling countryside where farmers tend their crops leads to the town of Belfast, a fast growing art community with homegrown foods and locally-owned businesses. For an applause-worthy end to a day of traveling, sit in on a performance by the Belfast Maskers or stroll through the downtown on Friday nights for an open-gallery walk of over 15 art spaces. Route 1 continues northeast along the rocky shoreline to Searsport, a town best known as a once prosperous shipbuilding community and now home to The Penobscot Marine Museum, Maineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest maritime museum, and many antiques shops. Continuing along Rt. 1 toward Bucksport, visitors can ascend Penobscot Narrows Observatory.
