Dear Friends...

On behalf of the Board of Directors, our Gala Committee and the entire staff at the JCC, we want to Welcome and Thank You for joining us to celebrate and commemorate 18 wonderful years of our JCC. We congratulate and thank our honorees, Jackye Feagan, Liz & Steve Fuerst, Evelyn Morris, Wendy & Stephen Offen, Joe Beutel z”l and Shimon & Sara Birnbaum z”l and all their family members who made our JCC a reality. It is because of their generosity, as well as the generosity of many other members of our community, that we were able to take what was a dream and make it a reality. This Gala is a true celebration of our past, present and future. It is an opportunity to honor those who helped establish the JCC in 1999. It is a chance to acknowledge those who built and now operate our JCC as it continues to grow. It is a time to recognize those who developed, implemented and currently deliver rich programs and services to our members. It is also a time to take a glimpse into our future and realize the sky’s the limit! In the spirit of celebration, we would like to acknowledge each of you for making this a memorable event for years to come. We extend a special thanks to all of our Gala sponsors. Your contributions are invaluable to our J and will be used to help those in need in our community. Thank you for understanding that we cannot do this alone. We rely on the generosity of people such as you to generously give to us, so that we can do and give to others! We are so proud of what we all have accomplished since opening our doors 18 years ago. Most of us cannot even remember a time that the JCC didn’t exist. We have become such an integral part of this community, serving as a prime resource for families and individuals in need. Your JCC serves an important role in this community changing and enhancing lives every day, and this is something we are very proud of. Thank you for being here this evening, and for being a part of this wonderful JCC that has become a home away from home for so many!

Impacting the Community The Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center is a non-sectarian agency serving more than 5,000 residents of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. It has been our privilege and honor to be servicing our community since we first opened our doors 18 years ago. The JCC is a Jewish social service agency offering programs for individuals of all ages – from our youngest babies to our seniors well into their 90’s! It’s all here at your JCC. The JCC provides scholarship assistance to those in need. We are extremely proud that each year the JCC Scholarship Fund awards over $220,000 in financial aid. Whether it be for a child with special needs to attend our summer camp…or a family from Israel in this country for cancer treatment for a loved one to send their children to our preschool or camp… or a senior to participate in health and wellness activities…or for a young adult with special needs to be a part of the Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team… our mission is to help all those who need our assistance and support in order to participate in JCC programs and services. Membership dues and program fees alone do not support the operation of our center. We greatly depend on the generosity of our members and friends who enable us to fulfill our mission. Over the past 18 years, the JCC has awarded more than $2.6 million in financial assistance. Thank you for making this possible.

What people are saying... Glenda Teitel, (Grace’s mom) This is a short message to express thanks to you and the JCC for the JCC Bridgewater Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team program. Coaches Stephanie Johnson, Paulette Kirchner and the entire volunteer coaching staff demonstrate exemplary commitment and dedication to our children. Their efforts and their love for the team enabled them to exceed all expectations. As parents of these special children, we could never repay them for the gift of self-confidence and dignity they instill. Stephanie and Paulette are an inspiration to us all. Thank you for allowing them to share their talent and gifts with us. We look forward to more incredible experiences.

Colleen Apicella We are so grateful that we found the JCC JCares program for our daughter! The mentors, programs, and opportunities are amazing! They offer learning, socialization and life skills all within a friendly, fun and safe environment! Alexa has been so happy since we switched from her previous "program". What more could we ask for.....thank you!

Juanita Painson, Nikki’s Mom On behalf of Nikki and our entire family, I want to say THANK YOU! Thank you for having such a robust support program for young adults with special needs. The past six months have been very invigorating for Nikki, and she has expressed her love for the staff and everyone at the JCC. It has been such a pleasure to watch Nikki develop in so many ways and it is all as a result of the creativity and attention she receives while in the program. So much of who she is today is because of J-Cares. Her vocabularyhas expanded and her interaction with members of the community has improved tremendously.Every day Nikki shares her experiences and is eager to return the following day to do it all over again. On Sunday, she wanted us to identify her clothes for the week because she did not want to miss a day. As Nikki continues to prepare for life in the real world, I am confident she will succeed because of the skills she is acquiring while at J-Cares. She has had the opportunity to explore food shopping, meal preparation, greeting guests and interaction with the preschoolers and seniors. Although Nikki has done this with other members of her family, the J-Cares program has expanded her territory, and given her exposure to other possibilities. Nikki has certainly made several new friends since attending J-Cares and I feel she will continue to have the freedom to express herself and demonstrate her caring spirit with the community. Once again, thank you for all you are doing to encourage, support and prepare Nikki for the world. Jane Whalen

A day without the JCC is like a day without sunshine!

and we can’t help but kvell!

Jennifer Baldwin I just have to tell you that I am blown away by the dance show! Dawn, you are a phenomenal teacher. I danced from age 3 to my 20's and I was crying in the audience today. Ella never once showed me the dances or practiced, so I was a bit concerned, but wow! She absolutely loves dancing and loves having you as a teacher. You are awesome!! Thank you!

Michelle & Jennifer Moran I am writing to express the deep gratitude my family feels towards Ms. Crista and Ms. Erica. As you know, this is Brandon’s first year in a school setting and, as is to be expected, the transition has been a tough one. It has been made easier, though, because his loving, devoted and dedicated teachers. Both we and Brandon know that he is always entering a room (and place) that is safe and fun. Every step of the way, Crista has reassured us, and cheered Brandon on. She does everything in her power to make Brandon feel at ease. It is exactly what any parent would want from a teacher at any level.

Today was also a milestone for Brandon. It was the first time he did not cry when one of his parents was leaving. I was, to put it mildly, elated. As I made a quick exit for the door so as to not push my luck, I took note that Crista was also extremely happy for Brandon. Indeed, she rushed over to him and was cheering his step in this extremely positive direction. My family is extremely grateful for both Crista and Erica and the wonderful, terrific, excellent, loving, fun, caring, superb environment they have made for our Brandon. The Rothman Family Jace, Eli, Jaryn, and Noah The JCC ECC is and always will be a special place in the hearts and Since the start of the school year, Miss minds of the Morans, both big and small. Thank you all so much. I half-day-per-week schedule. The transiwas nervous for them this week, but the teachtion at drop off was a critical point for us. ers/counselors could not be sweeter and better, Jace was initially very emotional at drop off and they’ve made the transition seamless. We are time, and his tantrum could last upwards of very thankful. I absolutely love getting the 40 minutes. The team effort in making drop updates on Tadpole of Elle. They make my day at offs seamless was crucial and everyone work, and I love the camp website with the pitched in to come up with a solution to pictures and videos. make Jace’s drop over more seamless. Your recommendation that we read Jace “The Kissing Hand" and provide Jace with a picture of his family to wear at school really Jane Schneiderman worked! I wanted to say thank you for the wonderful event yesterday put up by We sincerely appreciate the tender care, the JCC and the team. It was a great celebration of independence and affection, and attention that everyone has our children enjoyed everything from the pita baking to the crafts to the given Jace starting day one at the JCC. He krav maga experience. What I liked the most was the conversation that is truly a different child, and every change it sparked with our 15 year old about our heritage and traditions. I think in him is for the better. Thank you all. your team did a phenomenal job organizing it and bringing the community together. Again, thank you!

Honorees Sara & Shimon Birnbaum

The Birnbaum Family Joseph Beutel Joseph Beutel, z”l, was born in the small shtetel of Skalat, Poland. He generously dedicated our Jewish Community Center in loving memory of his parents, Shimon and Sara Birnbaum, z”l, who perished in the Holocaust. Beutel was his mother Sara’s maiden name, and Joseph may have changed his name to enlist in the Russian army, where he was a captain. It is believed that Joseph immigrated to the United States in the late 1940’s, traveling through Italy. He settled in Pennsylvania, and was in the shoe business, traveling to South America quite a bit. After retiring, Joseph moved to Lakewood where there was family on Sara’s side. As he got older, Joseph wanted to honor his parents. His relatives living in Bridgewater informed Joseph that our JCC was going to be built. He chose our JCC as the beneficiary of his generosity, and as a way to honor Shimon and Sara. Joseph was so happy to watch the JCC become a reality and attended our dedication and opening celebration. After the JCC opened, Joseph periodically visited, and especially loved seeing the children. Joseph’s relatives, the Bernstein, Shapiro and Schumer families, reside in our community and are proud to honor the memory of Joseph and his parents this evening.

Honorees

Jackye Feagan Jackye and her husband, Harvey live in Somerset, and have been married for 58 years. They grew up in the White Meadow Lake section of Rockaway, New Jersey, and their children were raised there as well. Their daughter, Jill is a Blind Rehabilitation Specialist for the Department of Veteran Affairs. Their son, Michael is a Senior Vice President for the Gluck Corporation, in Little Neck, New York. They have three grandchildren who are the lights of their life – Ashley, Paige and Jake. Jackye has a degree in Early Childhood Education, and has been teaching for 55 years, and always says she has enjoyed every minute of her career. Jackye came to the JCC Blaustein Early Childhood Center 13 years ago, where she was a teacher in the “Three’s” classroom. She and former ECC Director Lauren Lippit-Zissu worked very hard together, and watched the Early Childhood Center grow into the wonderful school it is today. It’s a place where children can learn, play, and most of all be loved by everyone! Her dog, Oscar -- a frequent visitor to Miss Jackye’s classroom -- celebrated his “Bark Mitzvah” at the JCC – a memorable event for all! Jackye’s students continue to be her inspiration and the reason she ends each year saying, “This is the best class I have ever had!” Jackye has even taught Seth Geldzahler, the President of the JCC Board -- how special it that! Her favorite saying is, “Some people don’t like to get up and go to work. Thank G-d I can”.

Honorees

Liz and Steven Fuerst Helping to steward the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC as a board member and legal adviser has been one of Steven Fuerst’s great privileges. His gratitude for the JCC stems from childhood, when he spent many hours at the JCC in Somerville. A commitment to improving Jewish life in Somerset County has long been a keynote of Steve’s career. In addition to serving on the board of the JCC, he has been on the boards of Temple Sholom, and the Oscar and Ella Wilf Campus for Senior Living, where he was president for two terms. Steve served as president of the Somerset County Park Commission for eight years, led the Coalition on Affordable Housing, and was for many years in the Somerset County Business Partnership. Steve is an attorney with his firm, Lowenstein Sandler, and has been president of the Somerset County Bar Association and served on the Ethics Committee for Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties. He is a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Liz Yusem Fuerst has also been active in Jewish organizations as well as community activities. She was a long-time board member of the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties, where she founded The Speaker. Liz also was a member of the board of the Auxiliary of the Oscar and Ella Wilf Campus for Senior Living. Liz has directed volunteer energies toward education for the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, (her alma mater), and Raritan Valley Community College’s Franklin Campus. She served as a volunteer public relations coordinator for Far Hills Country Day School, Philip’s Academy Charter School, the Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey and the Jacobus Vanderveer House Museum, where she also was a board member for nine years. Liz’s current volunteer service is for the State of New Jersey, where she serves on the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Committee on Attorney Advertising. She is also active in the James Beard Foundation. Her career spans journalism, teaching, and non-fiction writing. Liz has been a professor of journalism at Rutgers University in New Brunswick for the past 33 years, where she has authored books and publications. She also writes books about shopping, dining and touring, and has her own public relations agency, First To Know Communications. She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and did graduate work at the Annenberg School of Communications at Temple University in Philadelphia. Liz and Steve make their home in Bedminster. Their daughter, Emma Fuerst Frelinghuysen of Manhattan, is an executive in the food industry. They are very active in the lives of their two grandchildren, Harley, 7 and Edith, 4. You can often see Liz and Steve at the JCC, where he enjoys swimming and taking Spin classes, and they both practice Yoga.

Honorees

Evelyn Morris Evelyn Morris was thrilled to learn at the time that a new JCC was being built on the land where an outdoor pool and summer camp existed for many years. The new Center -- just two miles from Evelyn’s home -- would have a beautiful indoor swimming pool. She arrived at the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC, walked into the building and was greeted with, “Good morning, welcome to the JCC!” She knew at the moment she was “home”. The JCC has truly become Evelyn’s home away from home. She enjoys coming here several times each week participating in the Senior lunch, water fitness classes, Jewish LIFE programs and many cultural trips. The JCC has offered Evelyn the opportunity to make many new friends, while re-connecting with community members she had not seen in years. What Evelyn loves most about the JCC is the warmth of the people. She refers to the JCC as the “crown jewel” of the community. Evelyn has lived in Bridgewater for more than a 50 years. She is a long-time member of Temple Sholom and Hadassah, where she made many life-long friends. Evelyn worked at AT&T for about 22 years and retired in 1998 as a Project Manager. After her retirement, she worked at Temple Sholom as a part-time bookkeeper for four years when she retired-again! Evelyn’s volunteer activities over the years are numerous and include serving on the Board of Directors and Social Action Committee of Temple Sholom; the Board of Directors and Government Affairs Committee of ARC of New Jersey; and the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Evelyn currently serves on the Jewish Family Service Yearn 2 Learn Program Committee.

Honorees Wendy and Steve Offen Steve is a member of the law firm of Norris McLaughlin & Marcus, P.A., in Bridgewater. He has been in private practice of law since 1975 after a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Arthur S. Meredith in Somerville. Wendy has worked at Klitzberg Associates, a financial consulting firm in Princeton, on a part-time basis since 2001. The Offens have been members and active in the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC since its inception, with Steve having been a long time board member. Steve is a past president of the Family Counseling Service of Somerset County; Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties, and Jewish Family Service (JFS) of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. Wendy is an active JFS board member and served on the Federation’s board. Steve and Wendy were co-chairs of the Federation’s Super Sunday annual campaign. They are long time members of Temple Sholom, where both have served on the board of trustees. Steve was a founding member of the Hebrew Free Loan Society of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. He has also been on the board of trustees of the Wellness Community of Central New Jersey, and was a member of the ACLU Free Legal Clinic. Wendy and Steve enjoy spending time together traveling and hiking with friends, family and their dog. They particularly enjoy partaking in all that the community has to offer and have been thrilled to watch our JCC grow from a “kernel” of an idea to the exciting and robust community entity that it is now. It is a tribute to all of the lay leaders, volunteers and professional staff that have contributed to make our JCC great. Wendy and Steve are thrilled to celebrate 18 years of the JCC and look forward to the next 18! Steve and Wendy live in Hillsborough. They have two daughters, Amy and Emily. Amy lives in San Francisco with her husband, Adam and their son, Everest, and Emily lives in New York City.

The number 18 means “chai,” or “life.” The JCC, for the past 18 years, has placed emphasis on the significance of life, health, community, and camaraderie.

We salute the JCC on 18 years of “life”.
