Congratulations Nancy Gorrell and Joe Weinstein Due to your efforts and with the help of our outstanding staff, the JCC is what it is today - a warm, friendly, educational, compassionate facility dedicated to the values of Judaism and a community for all.
Doron & Sherry Steger
Dear Friends... It is our honor to welcome you to the JCC Party of the Year! We are thrilled to honor both Nancy Gorrell and Joe Weinstein. We are grateful for Nancy and Joe’s leadership on the Board, we have a deep respect and admiration for the way that Nancy and Joe model what it means to be a leader in our community. We thank Nancy and Joe for their vision, dedication, passion and leadership. Nancy, thank you for bringing the JCC Holocaust Memorial and Education Center to our JCC, an extremely meaningful and important addition to the Center. Joe, thank you for your years of service, your invaluable contributions to our Membership and Governance Committees, and for your strong commitment to this community. We want to thank everyone who contributed to making this evening such a success, from our event chair, Caryn Kenin, who is a true model of communal leadership, to the Board, Staff, and many supporters who worked hard to make tonight a night we can be proud of! As we enter our 19th year, we have much to celebrate. The vibrancy of the JCC, the strength of our leadership team, the passion and dedication of our staff - all of it is palpable. You cannot walk down the halls of our JCC without feeling the warmth and kindness of this community. We are so proud to represent and be part of an organzation that is so committed, to fulfilling its mission to enhance, strengthen and enrich the Jewish community, and the community at large. Even will all of our success, we are not satisfied with where the JCC stands today. We live in a world changing so rapidly that complacency with where we are is untenable. Together, we have embarked on a bold path. The JCC is transforming itself, year after year. We are here tonight to support one of our more recent endeavors – programs and services for children and adults with Special Needs. We pride ourselves in being responsive to the needs of the community and for creating an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome and where everyone can thrive. During the past two years, our Special Needs initiatives have grown tremendously; all you need to do is visit our Center to share in the gratification we feel. We have much work ahead of us to realize and sustain our vision of what this JCC and our community can be. As much as we have accomplished, we have so much more to do. Our JCC needs constant tending, and our dreams will only grow into reality with active support and hard work. Thank you to everyone who has, and continues to be a part of our journey.

Impacting the Community
The Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center is a non-sectarian agency serving more than 5,000 residents of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. It has been our privilege and honor to be servicing our community for the past 19 years. The JCC is a Jewish social service agency offering programs for individuals of all ages – from our youngest babies to our seniors well into their 90’s! It’s all here at your JCC. The JCC provides scholarship assistance to those in need. We are extremely proud that each year the JCC Scholarship Fund awards over $300,000 in financial aid. Whether it be for a child with special needs to attend our summer camp…or a senior to participate in health and wellness activities…or for a young adult with special needs to be a part of the Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team… our mission is to help all those who need our assistance and support in order to participate in JCC programs and services. Membership dues and program fees alone do not support the operation of our center. We greatly depend on the generosity of our members and friends who enable us to fulfill our mission. Over the past 19 years, the JCC has awarded more than $2.9 million in financial assistance. Thank you for making this possible. Adler Aphasia Center NJ

What people are saying... Rachel Rosenberg Being a first time mom, I feel lucky to have met some other women who are part of the JCC Early Childhood Center family who are also experiencing life with their first child. This has been a great sounding board for me when I need advice and an even greater way to make some new friends!
Camp Scholarship Recipient This is such a great news!!! We are super excited! We literally just finished jumping up and down and dancing! Thank you so much!!! I'm going to enroll her right away!
Road Rulz Camper, Chase Wasserman Camp is amazing and a LOT of fun. I don’t ever want it to end. If we could have camp all year, I would totally do that even if it was 90 degrees every day! The campers are nice and the counselors are lots of fun. The trips are also awesome and I love them. Mother of Two Campers Wow what a great way to start the day. I am so appreciative of what you have done for me and my children. Words cannot even say enough. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!
Bob & Lynn Santos We want to extend our sincerest thanks to you and your team for providing David and his friends with an awesome experience in Mystic CT. While there are many camps that provide specific services to the special needs community, there are far fewer opportunities for our guys to get out into the community and experience all this country has to offer in a mainstream environment. We appreciate the great effort these trips take in planning and execution, and hope there will be more in the future!!
Alina Wells, David’s Mother David has had a fantastic experience with J Zone! He has had a great time with members of the JCC community. After observing David through J Zone, Ellie was able to make suggestions for his camp experience that helped him to succeed and have a great summer at Camp Ruach. Lorna Morehead Our family has been so pleased with the JCC Bridgewater Tide Swim Team program for our children. The coaches and all JCC staff know and care for the kids as individuals; my kids are gaining skills while having fun. The JCC is like our second home. Abhisha Desai The genuinely supportive nature of the JCC Swim Team Coaching Staff and Administration makes a world of difference! Striving for SWIM EXCELLENCE! Building STRONG CHARACTER! Creating a FUN/FAMILY ATMOSPHERE!
Honoree
Nancy Gorrell, author and poet, has been an active volunteer in the Bridgewater and Somerset County Jewish community since she and her husband, Joseph moved here in 1975. They joined Temple Sholom and Nancy became chair of the Education Committee, a member of the Board of Trustees for many years and ultimately served as President of Temple Sholom from 1997-1999. She also served on the Board of Jewish Family Service including as the agency’s President. Nancy has been a member of the JCC Board since 2011. In 2014 she began a year of research to develop a vision based on a needs assessment for our community, organized a Holocaust Sub-Committee of the Board to execute that vision, and began the establishment of a Survivor database for our tri-county region. As chair of the JCC Holocaust and Education Center Board, Nancy and the dedicated team of JCC volunteers launched our Holocaust Memorial and Education Center in December 2017. Currently our Holocaust Center houses over 400 articles about the Holocaust and our Survivor Registry contains over 120 survivors as well as testimonies from their descendants in the Voices of the Descendants Registry.
Nancy Gorrell
Nancy has had a distinguished career as an English and creative writing teacher and Holocaust Educator and Diversity Coordinator at Morristown High School from 1972-2008. She is also a published poet and author of professional texts on writing science poetry and articles on teaching the Holocaust. In 1993, she was recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities Project at County College of Morris for her contribution to the teaching of poetry. Nancy was recognized as New Jersey State Teacher of the Year, 1991-92, and received a Governor’s Award in Arts Education in 2001. Nancy has made learning, education and service to her community the keystones of her life. She never stops learning. She was proudest at her Bat Mitzvah at age 42 by Rabbi Isaacs at Temple Sholom. She continues to study with the Melton program, her friends and her Rabbis. Nancy and Joseph have been married for 51 years and have two daughters, Sara Kate Brenner and Elizabeth Gorrell. They have three grandsons, Eli, Levi and Ari Brenner.
Honoree
Joe Weinstein has been a lifelong New Jersey resident growing up in Rockaway Township. He and his wife, Karen lived in Bridgewater for over 33 years and recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. They are downsizing and will be moving to The Hills in Bedminster, now that all three of their adult sons are “off the payroll” and living on their own. Jonathan and his wife, Marianne just recently moved from Manhattan to Westfield, and David and Jordan are both living and working in the Boston area.
Joseph Weinstein
Joe graduated from Rutgers College before heading to UMDNJRutgers Medical School. He completed his Family Practice residency at Somerset Medical Center and has been an owner and practitioner at Your Doctor’s Care in Hillsborough since then. The Weinsteins have been actively involved at the J since the days of the Talamini Swim Club and have fond memories of their summers spent there when the kids were young. Jordan was a camper, a camp counselor, and participated in the Maccabi Games, winning a gold medal in baseball while representing our JCC! More recently, Karen danced and competed in the first Dancing with the JCC Stars. In addition to the JCC, Joe has also been involved in the broader Jewish community, serving on the board of trustees of Temple Sholom, and up until a few years ago, was the long-time chair of the Hebrew High School Committee. Joe was a member of the JCC Board of Directors for 13 years, and also served on the membership and governance committees. He and his family have been long time supporters of the J’s mission, and actively participate in the wonderful programs the J provides for the Jewish community in the area and the community at large. Joe is humbled by this honor and looks forward to supporting the JCC for many years to come.
