Dear Friends...

Dear Friends, Welcome and Thank You for joining us for the Third Annual Dancing with the JCC Stars, an evening to support our Scholarship Fund. Tonight we come together to celebrate the JCC and the meaningful effect our Center has on our Community. We are so pleased to report that your JCC is doing amazing things. The communities support over this past year was unprecedented. The effort of our dedicated and inspirational Board members, staff, advocates, donors and sponsors, provided us with numerous successes never thought possible. We continue to collaborate with our members and the community to fulfill our mission and vision, to afford you the ability to live the Jewish life YOU want to live!! We are so proud to be able to help so many people in our local community so that they can participate in our wonderful programs and services that without the financial assistance allotted through the JCC Scholarship Fund, would not be possible. You help to make possible a summer of fun at Camp Ruach...a year of child care and learning at the Blaustein Early Childhood Center… an afternoon enjoying a nutritional lunch and socialization for local seniors…and the opportunity for those with special needs to compete on a swim team and enjoy “Prom”. Without your generosity none of this would be possible. Thank you. We want to recognize our eight volunteer dancers: Vanda Ferreira, Amy Geldzahler, Eli Goldstein, Peter Horowitz, Richard Skydell, Sherry Steger, Michele Tucker and Jed Weinstein, along with their Arthur Murray Dance School professional partners. We thank all of you for all the time and effort you have given to ensure that this event is a success. Each and every one of the dancers gave their all not only to mastering their dance moves, but to Fundraising. This is one dedicated group! We thank all of their families, friends, and business associates who supported them by being here tonight and through placing ads and well wishes in this Journal. Our deepest appreciation goes to our JCC Stars Committee, and specifically Caryn Kenin, for their continued commitment to the J. By being part of this event and connecting with the JCC, you have all found a meaningful way to touch other people’s lives and to be touched back. Again, we want to give each of YOU our most heartfelt thanks. We are truly blessed with a multitude of caring and compassionate friends in our community. Without your generosity over the past 15 years, we would not have been able to affect the lives of so many. With your help, may we each, person by person, do what we can to strengthen our own community. We look forward to impacting the lives of many more in 2015. Thank you again for coming tonight and for supporting the JCC Scholarship Fund. Enjoy the evening! Warm Regards,

Kenneth Bernstein President, JCC Board of Directors

Laura Friedman JCC Executive Director

About the JCC

The Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center is a non-sectarian agency serving more than 5,000 residents of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. We first opened our doors to the community in December 1999. The JCC offers the community fitness, recreational, social, educational and cultural programs for individuals of all ages. The JCC facility includes a fitness center, indoor pool, outdoor pool (with dome enclosure during the off season), gymnasium, group fitness studios and a summer swim club. The JCC Blaustein Early Childhood Center offers programs for children ages 6 weeks through Kindergarten. JCC Camp Ruach, our 8-week summer day camp, provides programs for children ages 15 months through 9th grade. J-Crew is the JCC’s After School Program for Grades K-6. THE JCC SCHOLARSHIP FUND The JCC serves as a Jewish social service agency and provides scholarship assistance to those in need. Membership dues and program fees alone do not support the operation of our Center. We greatly depend on the generosity of our members and friends in the community who enable us to fulfill our mission. The JCC Camp and Preschool Scholarship Program makes it possible for children and teens to participate in high-quality JCC programs that they could not otherwise afford. In 2013, the JCC awarded over $210,000 in scholarship aid so that families with financial limitations could send their children to Camp Ruach and The Blaustein Early Childhood Center. Scholarship assisitance is also provided to support services to over 200 seniors including a nutritional lunch, exercise, entertainment and the opportunity to socialize with one another, as well as to families and individuals who require assistance for JCC membership. The JCC provides support for families with special needs, including programs, activities, resources and a variety of other services.

Testimonials

The JCC is hands down the best preschool in the area, and we are proud to see our three boys thrive here year after year. As full time working parents, we take comfort in knowing that our boys are safe, secure and happy, as well as in an environment that promotes intellectual and social growth. It is evident each morning that they are excited to go to school, and when we pick them up each evening, it is clear that they had a great, eventful day. We always look forward to the new art project, hearing the songs from Shabbat or seeing the latest yoga moves – where else would your toddler come home and perform a “downward dog”?! Thank you for all you do for our family. Susan Halpern Chirch We are so grateful for all the fun we had at JCC camp Ruach this summer! A daily helping of activities and excitement! I had kids in three different groups…from the oldest to the youngest, they would always come home tired, but so happy about the day they had. As a father I was so proud that they were being taught Jewish values and rituals throughout their activities. The memories they have still come bubbling to the top in their daily lives in moments of "do you remember........at the JCC"…as a smile emerges on their face and they go about their life. For me it made a lasting impression forever in their hearts that cannot be anything less than the best summer of their lives...so far. I want to thank the JCC staff for their unimpeded help and attention to any question I had. The youth counselors were awesome and the adult counselors attentive and knowledgeable. Thank you Camp Ruach for an awesome summer. Our family can’t wait for year after year of fun in the sun that shines on the little patch of our earth. The Wentzel Family, ...Sara, Michael, Nicki, Katherine and their dad Matt. As a mother of a child with special needs, I am always looking for activities where my son will be accepted and encouraged. Our family moved to this area three years ago and there were few local options for us to participate in. When I heard that the JCC was starting a committee to discuss special needs programming, I was thrilled and happy to join it. Since our first meeting, which was not that long ago in Spring 2014, there have been tremendous changes and additions to the JCC programming. My son is already participating in a wonderful swimming program that he loves with an appropriate teacher and aides. The addition of a respite program is beyond thrilling - it is so difficult to find the right people to care for your child so that you can enjoy a few hours without worrying, that this is a very welcome opportunity. Not only do the parents have some time to do something alone as adults, but the children too will have fun and have a chance to socialize and make friends. Many other programs and opportunities have been discussed for this upcoming year, including a symposium with Temple Grandin as the keynote, and vendors geared towards parent options; as well as the addition of a self contained section of the summer camp complete with staffing supervised by a BCBA. I am very happy that our JCC is doing all that it can to provide programming for our children and I will certainly partake in as many of these that we are able. Barbara Drew I want to thank all the wonderful people who give of themselves to make our senior programs possible by participating in valuable fund raising activities. Without these fundraisers many seniors could not afford to participate in the programs that are being offered. The JCC is my second home. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday you can find me at Senior exercise classes. The exercise program helps keep me physically fit and gives me the opportunity to socialize with my peers during this activity. On Tuesday and Wednesday we have a delicious meal prepared. We enjoy the speakers and entertainment that follow lunch and the trips are wonderful! I have made new friends and reconnected with old friends at the JCC. Age is a relative thing. All of the activities that the JCC offers help keep us physically and mentally healthy. The JCC is the best! Linda H. Roskein

Master of Ceremonies Randy Berkow, 2013 Mirror Ball Trophy Winner, is a New Jersey native who grew up in Perth Amboy and Metuchen before moving to Bridgewater in 1988. He is best known for being the husband of Andrea and father of Rachel and Alex. The Berkow family have been members of the JCC since it opened in 1999. Four years ago, Andrea became the JCC’s Chief Financial Officer. The Berkows are active members of Temple Sholom. Randy has worked for Hess Corporation for many years and currently manages their Global IT operations. After winning “The 2013 Dancing with the JCC Stars, competition,” he and Andrea have continued and enjoy dancing together! Randy looks forward to being Emcee of tonight’s third season of “Dancing”.

Randy Berkow Our Esteemed Judges Michelle Garced, along with her husband Emilio, is co-owner of two Arthur Murray Dance Center locations in Central New Jersey (Somerset and Middlesex Counties). For more than 38 years she has been involved with ballroom dancing in one form or another. Whether developing dance professionals, coaching, competing, judging competitions, opening and then developing and operating The Studios, she has always loved her “work.” Especially close to her heart, however, is the fact that she has personally taught thousands of people how to dance over many years, and feels enjoyment at having affected a positive change in their lives through the art of social and competitive ballroom dancing! Christina Garced is an Arthur Murray dance professional who grew up as a “studio brat” in her parents’ Studios. She trained from a young age in various styles of dance including modern, jazz, ballet, lyrical and hip hop. Dancing and competing in both International and American Ballroom styles, Christina found herself addicted to the limelight and went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in English Theatre at NJCU. There she studied vocal performance, dance, and acting, and found that her exposure to other stage performance has helped to inspire and influence her ballroom training. Currently ranked as a United States Dance Championships 9- Dance Finalist, Christina decided to pursue her professional career in the American style because of its boundless, creative and uninhibited nature. Jill Hirsch has more than 20 years experience as a certified competition and pageant judge for national competitions in the areas of dance and baton. She holds NJTA and vocational certifications, and has training from Dance Educators of America and Broadway Dance Center. She has won numerous dance awards and has performed in Atlantic City, Walt Disney World and RCCL cruises. Jill also has choreographed pageants, local theater productions and competitive teams. Dawn Van Ness has been a dance teacher for the past 17 years. She has judged numerous elite dance teams auditions and she has been a judge for several “ Nutcracker” auditions. Dawn is the JCC Dance School Director and lives in Branchburg with her husband and two children.

Eli Goldstein is a Central Jersey transplant. He grew up in Cherry Hill, NJ but thanks to the magic of JDate, he has landed in our community with his wife and partner in crime, Robyn. Eli and Robyn have two boys, Seth (2 years old), and Justin (born in April), whom Eli just adores!

JCC Dancing Stars

Eli maintains his love and passion for Philadelphia sports, although he lives in Branchburg. As an Eagles season ticket holder, he is instilling his passion in his sons, and Seth can already sing the Eagles fight song. Eli is an active member of Congregation Knesseth Israel in Bound Brook. He is the Men's Club President and a former Board and Executive Board member. This volunteerism and community involvement is one of the reasons Eli chose to get involved with the JCC’s Dancing with the Stars. “It’s a fun night that helps so many people in our community.” He is the Financial Services Manager for the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties.

Eli Goldstein

Now the secret is out - Eli loves to dance! He has never “strutted” his stuff in front of a large public audience and is thrilled that the big night has finally arrived!

Peter is very excited to be dancing in this season of Dancing with the Stars. He is a novice dancer and this is his first foray into ballroom dancing. Who knows what this could lead to?! Peter is a 22 year resident of Bridgewater. He is married, and with his wife Andrea, and they have three daughters. Allie resides in New Orleans, Dana is currently studying in Paris and their youngest daughter Rachel is a senior at Tulane University. Peter is a Vice President-Investments at Wells Fargo Advisors in Short Hills, NJ.

Peter Horowitz

Peter has been actively involved with the JCC since its inception. He is a past President and is currently the Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee. Tuesday nights you will see his competitive spirit come out when he makes his way down the Gymnasium court playing in the JCC Men’s Basketball League. Peter also serves on the board of New Jersey Y Camps. Anyone who knows Peter knows he is a big supporter of Rutgers sports…you will see him at most basketball and football games…wearing scarlet red! In addition to college sports, his other interests are pro sports and movies. Peter wants to thank his family who have all been so supportive, and all of his friends who took time out of their busy lives to come and support him tonight.

Vanda moved to the United States from Portugal in 1987. With almost 20 years experience in the banking industry, she is now Vice President and Area Manager for Provident Bank, overseeing the Bridgewater, Hillsborough and Montgomery branches. She supervises business development and manages day-to-day operations. Vanda has been recognized for her outstanding generosity and dedication for her extensive community involvement. She says that one of the things she keeps learning is that the secret to being happy is doing things for other people. “The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others.” In her younger days, Vanda was an accomplished all-around athlete, earning five National Badminton Championship titles for Portugal. She loves to dance, and although she has never taken part in a dance competition, she feels very comfortable with any partner on the dance floor. Her hobbies include golfing, fishing and dancing. Vanda lives in Somerset with her 21-year-old son, Daniel.

Vanda Ferreira

“I am extremely honored the JCC has given me the opportunity to be part of this exciting wonderful fundraising event.”

Amy is a true Jersey Girl - born in Newark and raised in Oakhurst, NJ. After college at Syracuse University and two years in Philadelphia she moved to Bridgewater over 22 years ago. Amy and her wonderful husband, Seth have been married for 25 years and have two fabulous children, Scott (21) and Hannah (18).

Amy and her family are Star Members of the JCC and have been active at the J since it opened. She has worked on several JCC committees. Amy has served on the Board of Trustees of Temple Sholom and was chair of the Sharing our Blessings Committee.

Amy Geldzahler

Other than one ballet lesson when she was four years old, Amy has no formal dance training, and is known to say that she dances best at simchas where the drinks are flowing!! She is hoping that her keen tennis skills and fitness training help her to be a formidable competitor tonight (even though she couldn’t find a good Bruce Springsteen song to accompany her dancing). Here’s to hoping that Bob, her dancing partner, doesn’t look too shabby next to her.

Richard was born and raised in Somerville. He graduated from Montclair State College with a degree in Industrial Studies and went right into the family retail business. In 1983 he met the love of his life, Monica and they were married the following year. They met while starting a Jewish singles group formed under the auspices of the Somerset Jewish Federation. In 1988 Richard left the family business to open Skydell Contracting Inc., a residential remodeling company. He and Monica have two beautiful and talented daughters, Alanna (25) and Devon (22), who both attended and later worked at JCC Camp Ruach. Richard, Monica and the girls are members of Temple Sholom.

Richard Skydell

Richard has been involved with the JCC during three periods of his life. First when he was a young child attending child care at the JCC when it was located in Somerville. Later as a member of the JCC Swim Club when it was just a pool and a locker room, and again when he was called into service during the design phase of the current JCC. He has served on the Board of Directors since 1999 in various positions, and is now the incoming President. While dancing was always something that he did to either catch the eye of a girl (rarely with a positive outcome) or to please his wife (also not always with a positive outcome!), he enjoys being a part of this important fundraiser for the JCC Scholarship Fund. Richard and Monica have recently enjoyed taking ballroom dancing lessons at Arthur Murray as part of their new “almost empty nest” life.

Sherry always loved dancing, having taken lessons on and off as a child. Although she never made it to the front row at Miss Vivian's dance recitals, she still enjoyed herself. Since then Sherry has been dancing at all weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. Sherry was born and raised in New Jersey. After receiving a degree in Computer Science in the 70's, she went on to educate others, including the administrators of Somerset County College (now RVCC) about this new phenomenon…the computer!

Sherry Steger

Sherry got involved in volunteer work when her children were young. The lobby of Temple Sholom was like her office since she was there 15 times a week between carpooling to Hebrew school and nursery school. As a Federation board member, Sherry was part of a group in the ‘90s -- along with her husband, Doron -- that had a dream to build a JCC in our community. Growing up, she experienced the difference a JCC made when the MetroWest JCC opened its doors. Sherry knew that people would come out of the hills to come to our J! With vision, passion and the help of countless volunteers, the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC became a reality. Although her own children were already grown when the J opened, Sherry knew that many other children -- including her grandchildren -- would cherish many wonderful childhood memories made at our JCC. “Thank you for your support and for making this a great fundraiser. Excuse me if, while I'm dancing, I make believe you're not there!”

Michele is very proud to be participating in the JCC’s third annual Dancing With the Stars! She has worked as a preschool teacher here at the J for 10 years. Michele is an active member of the JCC who loves to go to the pool over the summer and workout in the fitness classes. She has a Masters Degree in education and loves to teach the little ones. Both of her children attended the preschool, and now her daughter, Blake, is in Middle School, and her son, Brice, is a Junior in High School. Michele has never had any formal dance experience before this event, but she does love to dance at parties, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs with her husband, Spencer, her kids and friends. At first Michele may tend to be shy, but when you get to know her, you will see her colorful personality! Being a part of Dancing With the Stars is a bit out of Michele’s comfort zone, but she thought it would be a fun thing to do and a great way to raise money for the JCC. Besides, she will keep in mind what her teenagers are always saying: “YOLO!”

Michele Tucker

Jed has been a member of the JCC for the past five years. He lives in Bridgewater with his wife, Amy and two children Sophie (11) and Max (5). Both children have been campers for many years. Max started as a Toddler and is soon to be a Kindergartener at the Blaustein Early Childhood Center. Amy works at the ECC and also worked as a Unit Head at Camp Ruach during Summer 2014. Jed has been employed by Staples for the last 16 years as a Fraud Investigations Manager in the New York /New Jersey Metro area. He is also a Licensed Private Investigator in New Jersey. He loves a good game of cat and mouse! Jed is so excited to have been asked to join Dancing with the Stars, Season 3. He is looking forward to expanding his two signature dance moves… moving from side to side and the always famous finger snap! Let’s see Jed progress from an impromptu dance with his wife in the kitchen to a spotlight dance at the JCC.

Jed Weinstein

The Professional Staff at The Arthur Murray Studios BRITTANY D’ALESSIO has been performing since she was three years old. The stage has always been a second home to her. Brittany studied Theatre Arts in school since the age of 14, with dance being her main concentration. She has been teaching at Arthur Murray for two years and in addition to teaching, she has competed with some of her ballroom students. Brittany is thrilled to be part of this year’s JCC Dancing with the Stars event and cannot wait to show everyone her passion for dance through this experience! BOB GAI is a native of Haiti, where many parents encourage their children to learn social and competitive dancing. Bob was encouraged by his parents. He has a great background in jazz, lyrical, ballet and Haitian folk dancing. He moved to the United States in 2006 and continued his learning, training, studies and passion for dance. Bob’s students love his energy, teaching approach, flair and positive attitude. He inspires others both on and off the dance color to love the art of dance as much as he does. GARY HOLLIDAY has been an Arthur Murray Dance Center instructor for nearly 20 years, affiliated with both the Highland Park and Green Brook locations. Both his unique style of teaching and his personal dance attitude demonstrate an uncommon flair. Gary’s personality is fun-loving and he certainly brings that to all of his lessons. On the dance floor, Gary surely makes his students shine! KRISTIE KUO is an Arthur Murray dance professional who continues to compete in both International and American Ballroom styles. As a social dancer she realized how much she enjoyed performing and started her competitive career at the collegiate level. After she graduated from Rutgers University, Kristie reflected fondly on her time with the Rutgers Ballroom Dance Team as a Vice President, member, and competition organizer, and realized that pursuing dance as a full-time profession is her true calling. She is following her love of dance as a committed competitor, entertainer, and ballroom instructor. Kristie’s students enjoy her upbeat approach to teaching whether in regular group classes, specialty workshops or private sessions. LEO MORA is an Arthur Murray dance professional whose desire to learn the craft of Ballroom dancing was derived from his passion and admiration for the dance artists he observed from a young age. Leo was a street dancer who started training in classes as a student, but was recruited as an instructor after a very short time because of his natural talents and magnetic personality. He started his professional career at The Studios more than a decade ago and and continues to teach, train, and compete in both American Rhythm and American Smooth styles. Currently ranked as a United States Dance Championships 9-Dance Finalist, Leo hopes to inspire other hopeful competitors, aspiring instructors, and promising students to love the art of dance as much as he does. ROSA PAREDES is an Arthur Murray dance professional who began dancing at a young age. As a versatile performer, enthusiastic instructor, and active competitor she is a fantastic new addition to The Studios. Rosa’s extensive training with champions such as Roberto Pagan, Maria Torres, and Diana McDonald has drawn her to specialize in Hustle, Theatre Arts, and Rhythm style dances. She holds several dance titles, including multiple First Place wins at the 2009 and 2011 World Hustle Championships (New Jersey). A graduate of Seton Hall, Rosa is staying close to her local roots and focuses her creative energies into actively competing and passionately teaching both social dancers and competitive students. MAIRA PINEDA is an Arthur Murray dance professional who comes to Arthur Murray from the worlds of Swing, Country Western, and Hustle dancing – most notably West Coast Swing (WCS). Maira has been involved in this specialized area of social dancing for over 15 years as an instructor and coach, as well as serving on the judging panel of many competitive Swing and Hustle dance events. A graduate of New York University (NYU), she has returned to her beloved East Coast and continues to work in various arenas of the performing arts profession. Maira possesses a wonderful, fun-spirited attitude, and is thrilled by the advancement every student makes.

The JCC would like to thank the Arthur Murray Dance Studios, especially owners Emilio & Michelle Garced, for the wonderful dance instruction they provided! We would also like to thank the Professional Dance Partners for their generous support. This evening would not have been possible without all of you.
