Dear Friends,

Today we are celebrating a special moment in our J’s history. It’s been more than 20 years since the groundbreaking for the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center. Our founders joined together to ensure the continuity of Jewish life in Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. They started their endeavor with a handful of families. Years later as the Jewish population grew and flourished, new opportunities emerged. Along with our original founders, a new generation of leaders came together to create our expanded facility, which has enabled our Center to become not only a thriving hub of Jewish life, but also a vital resource promoting fitness for all ages and a unique gathering place for residents of every background. We are grateful to our Past Presidents for their leadership and vision over the past 20 years. We appreciate and acknowledge our extensive staff and board members for their dedication and heartfelt contributions. We know that all of you took on this role with great pleasure and commitment, and we thank you for all you have done to grow our Center. We take a moment to reflect on the generosity of Joseph Beutel (z”l), who chose to connect with our community in the most generous of ways by naming this JCC for his beloved parents, Shimon and Sara Birnbaum (z”l). We will always be indebted to Joseph for his commitment to “Jewish Community”. People of all ages, faiths, and ethnicities come through our doors every day for a wide range of innovative programs, learning opportunities and services to live a healthy life. We are dedicated to providing a warm, welcoming environment and to embrace new ways to achieve our mission to sustain Jewish culture, build “Kehilla” and enrich lives. It is a great honor and pleasure to serve our culturally diverse community. We have had our share of successes, weathered all types of storms, and all the while worked as hard as possible to fulfill the needs of our membership and the larger Jewish community. We can be proud of the difference we have made in the lives of our community, the sterling reputation we have earned in Bridgewater and the greater area, and our commitment and work on behalf of the State of Israel. Through the hard work of committees and exceptional leaders, day in and day out we have worked consistently despite whatever challenges we might have faced to maintain and build our Center. With your commitment, we look forward to the next 100 years as well! This wonderful tribute to the JCC is also a testament to the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers who each year work with great passion to make our annual Party such a wonderful event for all. We want to offer our sincere thanks to Caryn Kenin, chair of this great event, and to your wonderful committee: Bonnie Bernstein, Judy Gross and Didi Shapiro for their outstanding service to the JCC. We would also like to thank our staff for all they did to make this evening such a success. We appreciate the time you devoted to this project.Your dedication and attention to detail make all the difference. We are grateful to each and every one of you for your support and look forward to continuing in the tradition of our founders.

Beverly Woodruff =Twenty Years at the JCC

We are grateful to all of our staff who have been part of our 20 year journey. This JCC has become a “Home Away from Home” for so many in our community, thanks to your love for our JCC. We also wish to thank and show our sincere appreciation to all of the staff who have worked over the past 20 years at this very special place we call the JCC. We wouldn’t be where we are today without all of you. Thank you! The JCC Board of Directors – current and past.

The are!

20 Years!

What people are saying... Dear Alanna and Sarah, As the season comes to an end again, I want to take a moment to thank the JCC for another awesome summer for Gianni. I’m not sure if you guys really know how much he looks forward to returning to the pool and to camp each summer. He asks to go all year long. It is his favorite place in the entire world, and it’s extremely difficult for me to find places in the community where he feels comfortable and not anxious. This would not be possible if not for the continuous kindness to my family that you’ve shown over the years. I truly appreciate you and the mission of the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center. With much gratitude, Jessica Guarino

Dear Funder, You can’t imagine how thankful and appreciative I and my family are being a scholarship recipient. For many years the J has supported my family. After I lost my husband it wasn’t easy to manage expenses. I didn’t have a heart to deprive my two lovely kids of the extracurricular activities. They both loved swimming, and were part of the JCC’s Bridgewater Tide Swim Team. It allowed them to grow with caring friends, families and coaches. There were opportunities for them to give back to the community and participate in 5K fundraisers and have fun. The JCC has helped me keep my mind and body tuned to a healthy and active lifestyle. I consider myself fortunate to be able to participate in group fitness classes. The fitness instructors are highly skilled and have such a positive energy that makes everyone feel welcome. If it wasn’t for the Funders to make this possible for me and my family, we would have missed significantly important opportunities in life. I’m truly grateful to our JCC Funders. Thank you, Nishi

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of the JCC Board of Directors: We may never have the pleasure of meeting. I may never have the opportunity to tell you, in person, the impact of your vision and dedication to the Special Needs community. To rectify that, please let me introduce myself. My name is Margaret Hannan. My daughter Katie has special needs and is an intern in the “JCares” program. While Katie was still in the school district, I spent the good part of a year researching and visiting various day programs. My goal was to identify a day program that provided the flexibility and support for Katie to be safe, independent, challenged, active physically and in the community, and most importantly, happy. For various reasons, the number of day programs that checked all the boxes was non-existent. Over time, I learned about JCares and loved what I saw as a JCC member. Some might argue that I stalked Ellie Willoughby until I got the formal tour, while others might admit that I was obsessed with the program after that tour. Among other challenges, my daughter is apraxic which means her speech and language is either significantly delayed or has yet to emerge. After her 2-hour JCares intake visit, which is really like a taste test, on the way home she grabbed my hand and said, “Mom, I love it there”. So here she is, safe, independent, challenged, active physically and in the community, and most importantly, happy. My sincerest thanks to the JCC Board for your vision, investment and sustainability of JCares, a unique and state of the art model of what all day programs could achieve with the commitment that JCC has demonstrated. Sincerely, Margaret Hannan

...and we love it! Dear Funder, I am so grateful for your generosity and want you to know how much it means to me and my family. I recently asked my 10-year-old daughter what she likes best about camp. She excitedly replied, “There are too many things to pick just one… the counselors, friends, the ropes course, swimming, cooking, the awesome trips…Camp Ruach is the BEST!” She then reminded me that she looks forward to camp all year and plans to continue with camp at the JCC every summer until “I am too old to go anymore”. Thanks to the generosity of you and funders like you, my daughter’s fervent hope to spend her summers at Camp Ruach has become a reality. I simply could not afford to do it without the financial assistance I have been granted. As a hard-working single mom, I want what every parent wants: to provide my child with a fun, safe, enriching camp experience. Camp Ruach has provided her the opportunity to grow, develop new skills, socialize, and have fun. Moreover, the JCC has enveloped us into its community and Camp Ruach has really become my daughter’s home away from home for the summer! I want you to picture my daughter and her camp friends excitedly embrace (just happy to see one another each morning), the pride on my child’s face as she conquered her fear on the high ropes, and her excitement of bringing home the challah she had made to share with the family. These precious moments and countless others, courtesy of camp at the JCC, fill my heart with love and gratitude. Knowing that she is happy, safe, and well cared for gives me a sense of peace worth its weight in gold. Your contribution means so much and we are forever grateful. Thank you! Sincerely, Scholarship Recipient Dear JCC Donors,

Dear Supporters,

We want to thank you and express to you from the bottom of our hearts how much we appreciate your generosity, and financial support for our family in helping to get our children to a safe and amazing camp.

I wanted to thank you so much for the wonderful time that Emmie has had participating at camp. Everyone -- counselors and kids -- have been so nice to her. She has really looked forward to the trips each week, and I’m so glad that Emmie was able to have that experience of field trips outside of school with a mainly typical group of kids. We can’t wait to sign her up for camp again next summer!

Our child was diagnosed with a catastrophic illness which we have been coping with as a family for 6 years now. We were told he wouldn’t make it to 5 years old based on his illness; our entire lives changed. Survival now has new meaning as we continue to work to ensure our child obtains the best treatments possible and cope with knowing that all the suffering is all our child knows and when he is not ill he is a beautiful, happy child which brings us hope and joy! Thank you! You have made a real difference for us! With gratitude, Recipient Family

Kim Radha

Impacting the Community After 20 years becoming established in, and serving our local community, the JCC is widely recognized and respected for all that we offer and do. The J has become the central location not only for the Jewish Community, but for the entire Community. Our doors are open to all, and we provide programs and services to individuals of all ages, from newborn babies to seniors turning 100 years old! We are extremely proud to provide more than $300,000 per year in scholarship assistance to those needing financial assistance. Over the past 20 years, that amount has exceeded over $3 million in financial assistance. These allocations help to send a child with special needs to JCC Camp Ruach and/or the Blaustein Early Childhood Center, or help a Senior on limited income afford to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The JCC always says “yes” to someone who asks for our help. We never turn anyone away for their lack of ability to pay. This is what differentiates the JCC from most other fitness facilities in the area. We are proud to be a social service agency and this will always be our focus. We are very humbled that so many people consider the JCC their home away from home! These are many of the agencies and organizations locally, nationally and around the world that the JCC has impacted.

CELEBRATING

JCC President Doron Steger 1999-2001

20 YEARS

Born in Haifa, Israel, Doron emigrated to the U.S. when he was eight years old. He was immediately placed in the back of his 3rd grade classroom, but by the end of the year he spoke English, ate pancakes and played stick ball! His first encounter with the idea of JCCs was at the 92nd St. Y in Manhattan, where he swam, played basketball and met girls! (His high school was all male.) At the age of 22 he left NYC for the pastoral city of New Brunswick where he earned two Masters Degrees, in Physics and Computer Science, at Rutgers University. Here he met his student, now his wife of 47 years, Sherry. They spent a year in Europe and Israel where Doron worked at The Weizmann Institute of Science. Upon their return to the States, Doron worked for ADP, Sandoz Pharmaceuticals and Hoechst, which brought him and Sherry to Bridgewater. After eight years, he took an adventurous step: he left the corporate world and started DZS Computer Solutions, Inc., which focused on clinical trials for the pharmaceutical industry, satellite signal encryption, TV show colorization and other projects for the entertainment industry. In the 35 years of its existence, DZS was involved with the development of many new drugs and a number of innovations that helped launch the cable television industry. In the summers Sherry and Doron's children, Elana, Ben and Daniella went to the JCC’s Camp Tevah/Talamini, now JCC Camp Ruach. During the school year Doron coached Ben's soccer team, and got involved in the Bridgewater community by being part of the group that successfully defeated the creation of a garbage dump. But his biggest accomplishment (aside from his 3 children, their spouses and his 8 grandchildren) was his efforts in building our JCC. Doron’s passion was contagious and with phone calls and parlor meetings over the course of five years, the dream of many to build our JCC became a reality. He is thankful to the hundreds of donors and volunteers for making that dream come true. Tonight's celebration, after 20 successful years, is a proud moment for all.

CELEBRATING

JCC President Alvin Levine 2001-2003

20 YEARS

Alvin Levine was the first born into a Plainfield family whose parents met at a Plainfield JCC dance. When he was four, his father, who was a champion handball player, took him while he played. When Al was old enough, he participated in Camp Noam at the JCC. Later, he did things like taking dancing lessons, learning to swim, joining Boy Scout Troop 2, being a member of the Boy's Leaders Club, playing on the basketball teams, enjoying the Youth Lounge, etc. The JCC was his second home. The Jewish boys and girls hung out there whenever they could. Fast forward, when Al’s family moved to Somerville in 1961, they joined the J in Somerville and the Pool on Talamini Road. Al’s daughters, Debbie and Sue went to nursery school, attended the day camp, met their friends there, etc. He joined the Board and eventually became the President of the "old JCC". Al and his family formed many friendships from those happy times. So with that as a backdrop, when the "new J" was being organized, Al was only too happy to answer the call. The rest is history!

CELEBRATING

JCC President Harriet Blank 2003-2005

20 YEARS

Harriet came to the United States as a baby when her parents fled Nazi occupied Austria. She grew up in New York City and graduated from Adelphi University. A year later she married her high school sweetheart, George Blank. Together they have son Howard Blank of Livingston and daughter, Leslie Ostrin of Highland Park. As her children grew, she returned to school and became a C.P.A. Harriet and George’s family now includes eight grandchildren, three of them married and three great grandchildren. Harriet became active in community life serving as president of the Sisterhood of her synagogue and joining the board of her Federation. When the community built the JCC in 1999, Harriet saw a new opportunity to influence Jewish life by broadening the horizons of the many non-affiliated Jews. She became the 3rd president of the thriving Shimon and Sarah Birnbaum JCC. To broaden her ability to contribute to the JCC movement, she became a member of the board of the JCCA in 2006, and has served as secretary and an executive committee member. Her passion for Israel as an integral part every Jew’s DNA has led her to be active in promoting Israel engagement both within her own JCC, the JCCA board and at AIPAC. Harriet and George live in New Hope, PA. Harriet spends much of her time on philanthropic endeavors, promoting day school education, supporting youth villages and high schools for children at risk in Israel, and of course, the JCC!

CELEBRATING

JCC President Barry Ages 2005-2007

20 YEARS

Barry was born in Ottawa Canada, in the late 40’s, at the beginning of the Baby Boomer Generation from a father returning from the war and a mother who kept the home fires burning. Having pursued a legal career, he took a detour after meeting and then marrying another lawyer, a woman from Bridgewater, NJ (ask where they met!) Abby Schenkman in 1981. They moved to Bridgewater and had three children: Naomi, until recently was counsel to Greenpeace for climate change matters and is now a resident of Oslo, Norway trying to help a cruise line get on the green program; Sean who is pursuing his third degree, an MBA at NYU-Stern; and Justin who with his wife, Nathalia are Wall Street “people”. Abby and Barry became grandparents for the first time this summer, welcoming Ezra to the family! About 20 years ago, Doron approached Gene Schenkman, Barry’s father-in-law, to help with the development and building of a new JCC in Somerset County. Ever the wise developer, Gene promptly introduced Doron to Barry and told him that Barry would be of great assistance to him. Barry proceeded to work with the Building Committee to secure the services of a qualified architect, competent contractors and last but not least, to spend endless hours at Bridgewater Township land use, Planning Boards and construction offices to see that the project ran smoothly. Oh yes, and the other hours sitting in a construction trailer trying to pacify everyone! Barry was the 4th President of the JCC, having benefitted greatly from the endeavors of Doron, Al, and Harriet. Although Barry did a lot of the “bones” of the JCC, Steve Rosenberg (the JCC’s first Executive Director) deserves the honor ablest of mentions for literally taking the JCC from nothing and making it a fully functioning organization. Of course it helps to have the benefit of a dedicated and professional staff to run the JCC and a committed Board of Directors. The JCC for Barry has become like the Marine Corps – once you’re in... you’re always in! Under Laura’s tutelage, the list of projects that continually arise always seems to have him involved. Barry is proud to have served the community.

CELEBRATING

JCC President Addie Kluger 2007-2009

20 YEARS

Addie moved with her husband, Dr. Lawrence Kluger, to Bridgewater in 1981 and immediately became involved in Temple Sholom and Somerset Medical Center, where she participated in many committees. She was a board member of Temple Sholom for many years, chairing the membership and adult education committees. After moving to Warren, Addie became involved on PTA boards at local public and private schools for her three children. She was a member of the Jewish Federation board during the conception and planning of the JCC and became very active in designing, building and fund raising for the JCC. She joined the board of the JCC at its inception, chaired many events and committees and was a founding member of Jewish LIFE. Addie was President of the JCC board from 2007-2009. Professionally, Addie was a board certified physician's assistant specializing in cardiology and teaching physical diagnosis. Years after retiring from practice, she started an interior design company and did residential and commercial work. Addie enjoys summers at the New Jersey shore and winters in Florida. She loves reading, boating, exercising but most of all spending time with her family, especially her three grandchildren.

CELEBRATING

JCC President Peter Horowitz 2009-2011

20 YEARS

Peter is humbled to be honored here tonight with his fellow Past Presidents. They are truly amazing people who all have contributed to the ongoing success of the JCC. Peter has resided in Bridgewater for the past 26 years. He is married, and with his wife, Andrea they have three daughters, Allie who lives in New Orleans, Dana who lives in San Antonio, and Rachel who lives in Brooklyn. Peter is a Senior Vice President – Investments at Wells Fargo Advisors in Short Hills. Peter has been actively involved with the JCC since its inception. He is a past President, is currently a board member and sits on many committees. He is the immediate past President of New Jersey Y Camps and is currently on their Presidential Advisory board. He also is the Chair of the Jewish LIFE Celebrate Israel Committee. Peter’s other main area of interest is Rutgers Athletics, and he can be seen at most basketball and football games. Peter started his Jewish not-for-profit journey at the Y on Green Lane in Union. He spent most of his teen years there, and was their first teen board member. It was the role models and their strong values that he observed at the Y that were instrumental in Peter making volunteerism and Jewish philanthropy an important aspect of his life. Peter has spent the past 20 years playing in the JCC basketball leagues. He has met a bunch of wonderful people during that time. It is with great sadness that he announces his “retirement” from the league due to ongoing knee problems. Peter thanks everybody he has played with over all of those many seasons. Peter wants to thank his friends for being here tonight, and especially wants to thank his family for their support over the past 22 years. There were many family dinners that he missed over that time to be at JCC meetings. He thanks Andrea and the “girls” for their understanding.

CELEBRATING

JCC President David Bunevich 2011-2013

20 YEARS

David Bunevich was born in Passaic, NJ in 1952. He has very fond memories of attending nursery school at the YMHA in Passaic. His entire youth was spent as an active member at the Y, including as a camper and camp counselor. David’s father was a Board member at the Y for more than 30 years. David moved to Hunterdon County in 1979 with his wife, Lisa Nierenberg. They have three adult children, Eve, Robin, Sarah. David and Lisa are proud grandparents of their new grandson, Jake! David has been a lawyer in Private Practice in Oldwick since 1985 and Lisa is a retired family physician. They have been active participants and supporters of the J since its creation. David also is active in Raritan Valley Community College, and presently serves on the RVCC Foundation Board. David’s introduction to our JCC was when a meeting was hosted at his home where the community was introduced to the proposed plan for the initial construction of the facility. David noticed that it lacked a very important component that was central to his memories of his Dad who spent every Sunday at the Passaic Y playing handball, cards indulging in bagels and lox and holding court in the shvitz. Our proposed J had no shvitz! David’s Dad, Bob Bunevich, had recently passed, and David mentioned to Doron that he would give a family gift for the construction of the shvitz in honor of his memory, and as a place he could connect with his Dad again. Doron loved the idea and immediately said it was a done deal. David adds, “I don’t even think we got Board approval!! The JCC shvitz to this day is where I still ask my Dad for his wisdom to help me solve my problems.” Thanks to Doron and our great lay and professional leadership, David found a home for his family and his father's memory. “Our JCC has made the vital connection between my great childhood in Passaic formed at our Y and my belief that we must continue this great institution to do the same for the next generation of our Jewish community. I am honored to have been one of our leaders.”

CELEBRATING

JCC President Ken Bernstein 2013-2015

20 YEARS

Kenneth (Ken) Scott Bernstein was born in Somerville, to Linda and Bernard Bernstein. He attended Hebrew Day School for his elementary school years, and JEC (Jewish Educational Center) for high school. Ken graduated from American University. Ken enjoys travel, playing golf, reading, movies and classic rock. He is co-owner of Mid-State Lumber Corp with his two brothers, David and Gary Bernstein. The family business of 43 years is located in Branchburg. Ken has been involved with the JCC for more than 25 years. Some of his accomplishments during his Presidency include bringing on Teen Board members and launching the JCC Special Needs Program. Ken says that his favorite experiences during his term include monthly lunches with Laura; understanding and appreciating the work and time the entire staff devotes to make the JCC function daily; multiple visits to Camp Ruach, and watching the choreography of “Camp Buses Dance” during drop off and pick up during the summers! Ken also values the personal relationships that he developed with fellow Board Members and Staff, and he has fond memories of MC’ing JCC Dancing with the Stars! Ken’s “scariest” experience during his Presidency was “Day One”, while the saddest day was at the Annual Meeting when his term was completed. Ken and Nancy Bisignano, his life partner of 10 years, share a home together in Greenbrook. They each have two daughters, all between the ages of 23 to 31. Morgan Lituchy, married to Sam Lituchy and their new baby boy, Aaron, Jessica Bernstein, Alexa Bisignano and Samantha (Sam) Bernstein. According to Ken, “I am proud to be part of a legacy that defines Community Leadership. I congratulate all the Presidents being honored tonight, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve our JCC”.

CELEBRATING

JCC President Richard Skydell 2015-2017

20 YEARS

Having been born and raised in Somerville, Richard’s earliest connections to the JCC dates back to the early ’60s. At that time the JCC was located in Somerville. His earliest memory of the JCC was sleeping on a mat in Mrs. White’s room when he was attending preschool. Richard can still remember the look, sounds and smells of that building. Later he can recall swimming at the JCC Swim Club with his family and hanging out in the ugliest pool building ever built! Richard married Monica, whom he met through a Federation young singles club that they helped to establish. Together they “produced” two accomplished and beautiful daughters, Alanna and Devon. To continue the Skydell involvement at the JCC, Alanna (Skydell) Steinberg is now the JCC’s Camp Director and Jewish Educator. Devon lives in Manhattan and is a Sales Executive for J. C. DeCaux. When Doron Steger called Richard about 22 years ago to help out with the plans to build a new JCC on the grounds of the Swim Club he didn’t hesitate. After a couple of years, hundreds of meetings, a few disagreements, lots of fund raising, and dozens of meetings in a construction trailer the size of a broom closet, the board managed to deliver the second JCC building in Somerset County. Since that time, Richard has been entrusted with many different assignments and committees, culminating with the honor of being President. According to Richard, “Once you are part of the JCC family they never seem to want to let go, so I continue to do whatever is asked of me. It has been an honor and a privilege to be part of this fine, forward thinking community center. The staff and other boards members have made it a fun and easy task.”

CELEBRATING

JCC President Seth Geldzahler 2017-2019

20 YEARS

Seth and his wife, Amy, are native New Jerseyans and have lived in Bridgewater for over 25 years. After graduating from Tufts University and then Rutgers School of Law Newark, Seth practiced law in Philadelphia and then Morristown before moving to Bed Bath & Beyond in 1996 where he currently serves as Vice President Real Estate. Amy and Seth are proud parents of two children, Hannah, 23, and Scott, 26, who both attended Camp Ruach and swam for Bridgewater Tide in its early days. Hannah has worked as a lifeguard and counselor at the J as well. In addition to his activities at the J, Seth has been a board member of Temple Sholom and of its Hebrew High School and is a Community Board Member for the New Jersey Theater Alliance for many years. He is also a past trustee of the International Council of Shopping Centers as well as the current Eastern Divisional Vice President of Volunteer Leadership for that organization. Seth’s fondest memories of the J include attending Purim Carnivals with his extended family and spending many after-camp nights at the Swim Club tiring out the kids just a little bit more before heading home in their pajamas. One of his favorite current activities is sitting in the reception area of the J after a program, meeting or working out, and watching the activity and interaction between the members and staff. The JCC family experience is so meaningful. Seth is so thankful to have partnered with Laura and her amazing staff to lead the J for a few years and is honored to have shared that role with a board that is second to none with amazing ideas, dedication, and expertise. While he is proud of many things accomplished during his term in office, the one that sticks out most is receiving a random text just a few weeks ago from his niece, Mollie Rosen, who was teen board member until she started college this fall, saying “being on the JCC board was one of my favorite high school experiences - no joke.” While not volunteering his time or hanging at the J, he enjoys traveling with Amy and spending time with his family in Long Branch, NJ.
