She warns against using roadside wildflowers, many of which are invasive, state-regulated, and negatively impact native species. Instead, seek out local growers who carefully cultivate their blooms. “Aiming for a rustic, natural feel” for their August 2019 wedding, Nikki and John Murphy were excited to learn that Quonquont Farms grew fresh flowers onsite. Working together with Maida, they “loved being able to add fresh floral details to our bouquets, boutonnieres, flower-girl crown, my hairdo, chairs, arbor, cake, and table centerpieces . . . and completely tailor our floral arrangements.” For her July 2019 Quonquont Farm wedding to her husband Scott, Kelli Woodward had each bridesmaid create her own individualized multicolor bouquet from her favorite just-picked flowers. Not to be undone, Kelli used the lace sleeve from her late grandmother’s dress to wrap her bridal bouquet. “Every

“Shoes are a huge part of the bride’s style. To guide you through your shoe-shopping quest, Bride & Groom has enlisted the expertise of Ron Davis of Shoes to Dye For and Lynn Reed of Elegance by Carbonneau. First Steps RD: From when you start getting dressed until your last dance, you’ll be on your feet. Pick a style and brand of shoe that you can be comfortable in. If you’re not accustomed to wearing high heels, your wedding is not the time to see how it will work out. For outdoor weddings, a heel or wedge will prevent you from sinking into the grass or getting your heel stuck between bricks. The thicker heel will also let you tear up the dance floor with confidence. LR: Wait until you have your dress before selecting the shoe. If a gown gets ordered without a custom length, you have no idea exactly how long it will be until you try it on. Other considerations are the height of the groom (and whether or not that matters to you), comfort, and season. If it’s rainy season, I would stay away from a dyeable shoe, as they will run and stain.
One or Two Pairs? RD: Why not just buy one pair of amazing shoes? Designers today are focused on creating a much better product than in years past. Two vendors that come to mind are Angela Nuran and Bella Belle—handmade shoes made from the finest leather and silks. LR: If you’re heart is set on wearing a glamorous shoe that may not be a good choice for wearing all night, I absolutely would invest in a second pair that you can change into.

DIY Bedazzled or Dyed? RD: A great way to add sparkle to your shoes and save money is by doing it yourself. If you’re looking for that pop of color though, I would leave it up to the professionals to avoid ending up with the wrong shade. You could also streak or otherwise ruin the shoes. LR: You don’t see many brides bedazzling their own shoes these days because there are so many options that are already jeweled that they just don’t have to.

Sneakers? RD: I would save them for later in the night, if you must! People wear sneakers every day but they don’t wear a beautiful bridal gown every day! LR: Some brides choose cowboy boots and sometimes Converse. Like all trends, the bridal sneaker comes and goes. Does Price = Quality? RD: When shoes are made from high-end materials, they tend to be softer and more cushioned. More expensive shoes breathe, whereas cheaper brands are made from synthetic materials that will not breathe or stretch for comfort. LR: Price does reflect quality. For example, Badgley Mischka shoes come with leather soles rather than plastic, which can be slippery. You will definitely feel the difference in the general construction of a well-made shoe versus a poor one.

Online Shopping? RD: Buying online is easy, but by the time you return the pairs you don’t want, is it really worth it? If you can try multiple shoes on at a store, it’s always better than looking through pictures and reading other people’s reviews. LR: The public should support their local small businesses in all aspects of purchasing just about anything. But if you are buying online I would make sure that there’s a return policy that works for you. Trends RD: Thicker heels, wedges, and platforms; more lace and embroidery. The simple elegance of a closed toe is making a comeback, as are gorgeous flats. LR: A lot of our brides come in with Betsey Johnson Shoes, which feature their signature blue-bottom sole. Badgley Mischka is also popular.
Sole-Full Advice RD: If you have a hard-to-find size or “problem“ feet, you definitely want a higher-end shoe. Research brands like Lady Couture that can accommodate sizes up to 12 wide. LR: Find a pair of shoes you love to wear that feel great and look fabulous. When in doubt, ask your wedding photographer, event planner, or coordinator for advice. They’re likely to have some sage advice on the matter.

Conscious Style: Beautiful Ways to Ditch Plastic at Your Wedding
by Connie Jeske Crane Drink cups, cutlery, water bottles, straws, coffee stirrers, swizzle sticks. Sure, individually these are small items. But multiply that by 150 to 200 wedding attendees, and it’s easy to see how your reception could create a big pile of plastic trash in a few short hours. Want to avoid all that plastic? Just as communities across New England are currently rethinking the wisdom of single-use plastic items, many couples want to do the same at their weddings. While it may take a few extra moments to source eco-conscious alternatives, there’s a happily-ever-after ending: Ditching plastic can pay off bigtime when it comes to style. We talked to Lauren Mace and Ruthie McDonald, co-owners of Eutopia Events, based in Greenfield, MA. We asked them to tell us their ideas on stylish alternatives to plastic for weddings. Here’s what we learned:

Confetti and Bubbles If you want to supply guests with confetti (and your venue allows it) avoid giving guests non-biodegradable products or plastic items like bubble blowers. A better option is to “go wild” with confetti cones filled with biodegradable dried flower petals or lavender. It’s much more romantic! Tableware Can anything match the feel of fine china, solid cutlery, and luxury linens? Even if you’re planning an outdoor reception, McDonald says reusable dishware isn’t just more ecofriendly, it adds a wow factor. “I think it just feels a bit more substantial and nice.” If you’re not at a full-service venue, McDonald says, hiring a rental company to provide and later pickup your dirty tableware is very convenient, and companies often have a good range of tableware and linens. Want something more disposable? Here, Mace recommends sustainable, compostable options for cups, cutlery, and plates. With disposable tableware these days, she says, “there are alternative materials to plastic, like bamboo or palm leaf. “They have kind of a nice rustic look,” she adds.

Florals “If you’re using a florist and you’re concerned about plastic, you could ask them about what materials they use and request that they do arrangements that don’t include floral foam,” says McDonald. To further lessen the environmental impact, talk to your florist about any other eco-friendly steps, like avoiding cellophane wrap and using seasonal flowers. Wedding Décor and Signage When it comes to those individual décor pieces—signage, vases, candleholders, cake toppers—McDonald and Mace say you can get the look and feel you want at your wedding without buying everything new, with all the plastic packaging that typically involves. They advise renting and sourcing vintage and pre-loved items. “We really try to give people resources so they don’t have to go to a store and buy 20 new items for their wedding,” says McDonald. In fact, Eutopia now runs a small business that offers quality used wedding décor items. It’s called Eventiques, and it’s located at Innovintage, their store in Greenfield, MA. Catering Catering is a key place where plastics can creep in, so when you’re interviewing caterers, Mace suggests asking them upfront about their ecofriendly practices and any steps they’re willing to take to reduce plastic. “Instead of getting plastic drinking straws for the bar,” says Mace, “they might get paper straws, or for coffee stirrers they might get wooden ones or something that is more compostable, or they look for items that can be recycled or reused.” Some caterers, Mace adds, may take extra steps, too, such as sourcing food ingredients locally and asking their suppliers to avoid plastic packaging.

No Commitment: Temporary Ways to Celebrate Your Love of Body Art at Your Wedding by Connie Jeske Crane
Tattoos. They may feel trendy and contemporary, and in one sense, they are. In the U.S. right now, for example, we’re getting inked like never before. And the trend is particularly strong among younger Americans—the biggest group getting married right now. As a 2019 IBISWorld report noted, “About three in 10 Americans have a tattoo, and that proportion climbs to nearly five out of 10 among millennials.”

Yet while they’re edgy and of-the-moment, tattoos, body art, and the idea of incorporating them into rituals actually stretches back centuries. “Henna has been used to adorn young women’s bodies as part of social and holiday celebrations since the late Bronze Age,” notes the New World Encyclopedia. And we humans have also been marking our bodies with tattoos for thousands of years, as Smithsonian magazine notes, “in designs sometimes plain, sometimes elaborate, always personal.” If you and your partner share this timeless love of body art, and you want to incorporate it into your wedding, there are many possibilities—from ancient to contemporary and from fun and quickly fading to everlasting. On the more permanent side, as reported by the New York Times, some couples are getting special pre-wedding tattoos together; others are hiring professionals to tattoo willing guests at their receptions. If that sounds like too much commitment, and you prefer to dial it back a notch, there are also lower-commitment ways to embrace body art. Here’s a look at two interesting options: Temporary Tattoos For a no-regrets kind of fun, look no further than the temporary tattoo. Doris Loves USA, based in Braintree, MA, arranges temporary tattoo stations at receptions. Alison McDonald, co-owner, relates, “A lot of times, people who already have tattoos love doing this at their wedding because it’s a personal interest that they can share with their guests.” McDonald explains that these tattoos are “exactly like you might have had when you were a kid, except the quality is amped up.”

For about a century, having a traditional wedding cake—multiple tiers of towering confection finished off with swirls of royal icing—was essential to any big day. It just didn’t feel like a wedding without it. Yet, as we reported last January in our Winter 2019 issue, we’re seeing a shake-up at the dessert table. While traditional cakes haven’t exactly disappeared, lots of couples today want something less formal and more personalized, or they’re looking for a completely fresh concept at dessert time. This means that there are lots of exciting new options out there. If you want to rethink your dessert course, consider some of the latest oh-so-pretty and crowd-pleasing ways to do it: 64 Winter 2020

Wedding Cake with a Twist If you love the idea of having a showstopper cake but want to play with the format, talk to your bakery. Innovative cake designers are rendering cake tiers in unconventional tones (like dramatic black, mauve, or metallic), adding showers of edible flowers, or painstakingly applying hand-painted designs. At Soul Cake, a studio bakery in Woburn, MA, for example, owner Gayoung Kim is getting rave reviews for her graceful and contemporary masterpieces. Soul Cake’s recent creations have included a four-tiered cake done up in cream and black fondant and clean gold lines, which Kim says was inspired by the couple’s elegant wedding invitations. For a wedding at the Museum of Science, Soul Cake did a three-tiered design featuring white fondant and textured fondant pieces resembling a night sky with zodiac signs painted in gold.”

Dessert Tables Dessert tables loaded with choices are another huge trend these days. Not only does it please the guests, this format lets couples accommodate various dietary restrictions. “We do get a fair amount of interest for dessert spreads,” says Kim. “A dessert spread can really enhance the presentation of a dessert table and create a lot of excitement for wedding guests.” Alongside the dessert spread, many couples still find room for a cake, although this cake may be smaller and used mainly for the cake-cutting ceremony. So, what desserts should you include on your table? Soul Cake offers cake pops, macarons, mini-cakes, cupcakes, and donuts on its regular menu, but your options can run the gamut. We see many couples today sharing their favorites with guests—from pecan pie or cheesecake to ice cream sandwiches.
Celebrations of Culture Whether you take your inspiration from your travels or your ethnic background, celebrating cultural traditions is another beautiful way to indulge at dessert time. Imagine a classic French tower of croquembouche; Italian specialities like cannoli, gelato or millefoglie (a puff pastry cake with pastry cream and, typically, berries); or truffle-shaped Brazilian brigadeiros. Kim says she has also personalized a wedding cake with dried olive leaves, light-gray buttercream, and a deckled edge for a couple who wanted a modern nod to their Greek heritage.

Timeless Libations for Every Season by Emily Marcus Nothing quite sets the mood at an event like a great drink. Cocktails transport us, giving us a taste of an earlier time or an exotic location. When it comes to concocting creative beverages, more and more couples are opting for the tried-and-true classics to complement their elegant, retro, minimalist, or vintage vibe. In the words of Robbi Jo Oliver, director of wine and spirits for Mastro’s Ocean Club, “Traditional drinks are crowd-pleasers. If you are concerned about your guests and want to make sure they are pleased with the drink options, stick with the basics.” Likewise, bar manager Jenn Harvey of Cambridge’s Temple Bar notes, “Guests are opting for traditional drinks that don’t need much explaining. After all, simplicity is key.” Think simple equals boring? Think again. As the traditional trend booms, mixologists and bartenders are adapting their creations for modern times. Oliver advises, “To elevate these classics and make them more personal and fun, make a garnish bar with many kinds of olives, spices, peels, and maybe some inedible ones such as flowers and mini umbrellas!” Another option is to adjust the actual recipe: “Infusing a spirit is a simple way to take a classic and make it more you.
