ecently elected Central Water District Board Directors Leticia Vasquez and James Roybal ran on a campaign of “cleaning up the corruption” at the besieged public agency that serves millions of residents throughout South East Los Angeles county. They pounded their respective opponents, incumbents Rudy Montalvo and Ed Vasquez in campaign materials that painted the two as having cozy relationships with “cohorts and partners in crime.” What Vasquez and Roybal didn’t tell voters, exposed last week in LCCN, is that the two people overseeing and directing their campaigns have convictions for political crimes in the past. Former felon Ricardo “Rick” Mayer, and political consultant Angel Gonzalez, who donated huge sums of money, were the two key figures responsible for getting

he City of La Palma may yet regain its huge loss in sales tax revenues brought about by the pull out of BP/ARCO's fuel sales group in the third quarter of last year that precariously put the City almost to the brink of fiscal emergency. After the infamous oil rig debacle in the Gulf of Mexico four years ago, BP (British Petroleum) had to sell its refinery in the City of Carson and its ARCO retail network in the Southwest. The buyer is the Tesoro Companies, Inc. who most recently ex-

pressed willingness to bring back its ARCO sales and marketing operations to the same location in La Palma –a seven-story building at Centerpointe Drive and Valley View Boulevard and very close to 91 Freeway. The La Palma City Council meeting on Feb. 5 approved the recommendation by Community Development Director Douglas Dumhart to adopt a resolution approving an Operating Covenant with Tesoro. In his report, Dumhart said Tesoro has negotiated a lease agreement with TA Realty Fund for 22,491 gross sq. at 6 Centerpointe Dr. The space comprises the en-

that she still owes Gonzalez at least $18,399 for campaign signs and mailing costs, more than eight months after being elected last June. Roybal owes $22,878 to Mayer in expenses. Los Cerritos Community Newspaper has been told by several sources that both Mayer and Gonzalez could be rewarded for

their connections with Vasquez and Roybal by being granted consulting contracts that could bring in hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars. Since taking office on January 7th, 2013, in less than one month, Roybal and Vasquez joined ranks with long-time Director Bob Apodaca and created a new “voting bloc majority” at Central Basin. Within one week of being sworn into office, the three fired Chief Operating Officer Chuck Fuentes, along with Assistant to General Manager Ron Beilke and Attorney Arnold Alvarez-Glasman. They also ordered all contracts to be reviewed. The three also changed the Administrative Code and removed President Art Chacon from overseeing the Board just barely one week after he was seated for the position. Roybal is now serving as president of the five-member board. The three also immediately removed CBMWD Director and

he City of Cerritos’ sales tax revenue increased by 12.3 percent for the third quarter of 2012 compared to the same quarter in 2011, according to a recent report by HdL Companies. HdL Companies also reported that taxable sales for all of Los Angeles County increased by 5.8 percent, and sales tax revenues for the Southern California region as a whole rose by 6.7 percent. HdL Companies attributed Cerritos’ double-digit sales revenue tax increase to the Cerritos Auto Square’s continued strong sales and leasing activity for new vehicles. Retail spending on women’s and family apparel, sporting goods and on items purchased at department stores in Cerritos also increased. Higher sales at restaurants in Cerritos were also cited as contributing to the increase in revenue. A larger allocation from the countywide use tax pool also contributed to the increase. Danny McKenna, the owner of McKenna Volkswagen Cerritos, moved his dealership to Cerritos in 2009 and recently added 2,033 square feet to the showroom area. He also invested in remodeling the building and upgrading the landscaping. McKenna said: “Cerritos gets it. The City of Cerritos works to make the Cerritos Auto Square better and stronger. It’s a joy to work with the City Council and staff. I’m really proud to be an owner in the Cerritos Auto Square.” The HdL Companies forecast continued robust sales of new autos for the next few quarters as consumers replace older, less fuel efficient models and take advantage of record low interest rates.

FACT CHECK: Carol Chen’s Campaign Mailer Deliberately Misleads Voters By Brian Hews and Randy Economy An analysis of city documents show that current Councilwoman Carol Chen’s campaign mailer claim of cutting $40 million from the budget during her term, which started in 2008, is a “cumulative numbers game” maneuver meant to mislead voters. In actuality the cuts were much less. In his City Manager Budget Message of May 25, 2012, longtime Cerritos City Manager Art Gallucci said “in fact from the beginning of fiscal year 20082009 to mid year 2011-2012, it is estimated the city has reduced expenditures by approximately $9,218,000.” During 2007-2008, city revenues were well over $95 million; as of midyear 2012 they were around $83 million. “Given those revenue figures a $40 million budget cut would be next to impossible to attain,” said Dave Rass, a CPA from Tustin. “Average revenue for 2008-2012 was $88 million. Cutting $40 million in expenses is 45% of revenue, that is unheard of.” In questioning the cuts, the city indicated the cuts were “cumulative” and started in 2008. “The city cut over $6 million from the 2008 budget (6%), that reached $9 million in 2012,” city personnel said. In a questionable maneuver, Chen added the $6 million cut in 2008 to each consecutive year to get her $40 million total. Cerritos resident Jay Gray commented, “This reminds me of stereotypical cheesy used car salesman gimmick. They will tell you whatever they need to in order to make a sale, which means you don’t always get the whole truth. We saw that in the last debate when she got caught trying to manipulate the number of burglaries in Cerritos.”

The revelation calls into question Chen’s entire campaign mailer content that has been circulating around Cerritos for the past few weeks. The brightly colored mailer and a letter state that Chen has “proven leadership with experience you can trust,” and lists Chen’s “accomplishments.” The first on the list of accomplishments, indicating the importance to Chen, is a “$40 million claim of expenditure cuts.” Travel Cuts Questioned In questioning the letter sent to Cerritos voters by Chen that claimed Chen she saved “$50,000 in the council travel budget”, LCCN has confirmed that the actual vote was taken 32 months ago in June of 2010. In addition, the document shows Councilman Bruce Barrows calling a “substitution motion” attempting to raise the budget by $10,000, which was seconded by Councilman Jim Edwards. That motion did not carry. In asking for clarification of the $50,000 claim in the letter, Chen replied to LCCN,

“the vote is attached.” Chen went on to say, “the information you uncovered, once again, you distorted the facts. I'm continually surprised at your lack of accuracy and honesty. I request a correction.” Chen was referring to the expose by LCCN in last week’s paper disclosing Chen, Barrows, and Edwards taking expensive trips and dining on $65 steaks and Foie Gras, going on as many as ten trips in one year. All supporting expense documents are online loscerritosnews.net and refute Chen’s claim of accuracy. “Apparently her travel budget cut vote was window dressing,” said one Cerritos resident. “Dining on $65 steaks and Foie Gras does not sound like cutting costs to me.” “Chen’s claim of fiscal responsibility, by voting to reduce the “part-time” city council’s travel expense down $66,000, is laughable at best. With all that’s come to light on spending, no one should take anything she has to say seriously, “ said Gray.

Gray went on to say, “It’s blatantly obvious that the reduction has done absolutely nothing to stop the city council’s unnecessary globetrotting or the over indulgence of expensive meals. Furthermore, in the 4-years since Carol Chen has been on the city council she has lost over $30 Million, in taxpayer money, on the Performing Arts Center and the Magnolia Power Plant. It’s clear what speaks for itself and that’s her fiscal irresponsibility with what the city manager calls OPM (Other People’s Money).” Los Cerritos Community Newspaper will be releasing more expenditures Chen reported during her over four-year career on the Cerritos City Council during the next few weeks before the election. One Washington DC trip cost $12,000 in hotel expenses alone. On another trip, Chen, Barrows, and Edwards took the entire Fine Art and Historical Commission staff to a trip to Colorado. One of the current Fine Arts and Historical commissioners at the time, who attended the Colorado trip, berated LCCN over the weekend about the “accuracy” of the article. She said: “The Italian sculpture claim was not true; we looked for a Spanish sculpture.” The commission member, whom LCCN has chosen not to identify, said nothing about the expenses of the trip which cost taxpayers nearly $10,000. Another Cerritos resident told LCCN: “Obviously, these chosen few are flying high, eating like hogs and sleeping in the finest five star hotels. We the stupid tax payers need to wake up; it’s time to say enough is enough!” Another voter wrote a letter to LCCN who said, “be careful who you vote for in this March election.”

Readers React Over ‘Lavish’ Travels by Cerritos City Council Dear Editor,

ayor Jim Edwards will leave next month with lifetime benefits and it seems lots of travel mileage and obviously fine dining under his belt. Yet, he’s leaving Cerritos residents a Performing Arts Center that runs nearly $6 Million in the red each year and a Magnolia Power Plant that runs nearly $3 Million in the red. Jim Edwards’s legacy to Cerritos, after 8-years on council, isn’t the 1st CEB. LA MIRADA MOVES AHEAD WITH CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS La Mirada has received competitive bids for a number of infrastructure improvement projects set to be under construction by spring. Much of this year’s Capital Projects Budget is dedicated to addressing items in a recent engineer’s report, which identified more than $67 million in needs for streets, sewers, storm drains, traffic signals, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, bridges, and access ramps. Resurfacing work has been completed on Knott Avenue as a joint project with the City of Buena Park. Knott Avenue was among the streets identified as in need of maintenance in the engineer's report. Planning, engineering and property acquisition efforts will continue throughout the year on the I-5 Freeway improvement project, which is scheduled to begin construction in 2014. In preparation for the freeway work, a number of roadway improvements are being completed in the area near the freeway. Street repairs will begin soon for portions of Alondra Boulevard, Stage Road, Trojan Way, and South Firestone Boulevard. This work is being completed with Measure R funds. Major sidewalk improvements planned for Santa Gertrudes Avenue from Lemon Drive to Rosecrans Avenue are scheduled to begin in February and be completed in April. Work includes a new meandering sidewalk, curb and gutter repairs, new curb access ramps, street tree removal, landscaping treatments, and an automatic irrigation system. Street repairs to 42 neighborhood streets throughout La Mirada are scheduled to begin in February and be completed by July. These streets have been rated as being in the greatest need, according to engineering reports. The work will include street rehabilitation, curb, gutter, and sidewalk repairs, and storm drain improvements. The work was engineered by three engineering firms as separate projects to expedite the improvements.

Friends of La Mirada Library Hold Member Appreciation Day Members of the Friends of the La Mirada Library met on Saturday, February 9 to listen to Dana Taylor tell of her life in La Mirada and Oklahoma. She was welcomed by President Malena Avila Hough and introduced by Vice President Irene Bridich. Before she talked, La Mirada Library Manager Jennifer McCarty shared the ways that the Friends have helped the Library as they supply funds to purchase books, programs and furniture. She thanked them for their many volunteer hours that help keep the Library strong and an asset to the community. Dana Taylor told of growing up in La Mirada and her ventures into writing that began in the mid 1970’s. Her mother was a part of the original La Mirada Symphony and now she has come full circle as Dana is the present president of the La Mirada Symphony, taking over the reins from Pat Ruiz last year. Dana told of her writing experiences but dwelled on the electronic version where downloads are available through companies like Amazon. Amazon’s unique method of marketing where they offer free downloads for short specified periods helps to sell the books at other times. Her first magazine article was published in the Ladies Home Journal in 1979. Her first book, Ain’t Love Grand, was published in 2004 and won the Golden Quill Best First Book Award. Dana also has an interest in the healing arts and her book, Ever-Flowing Streams: Tapping into Healing Energy, won first place in the Spirituality and Religion Category of the 2012 E-Festival of Words Awards. Other books by Dana include, Devil Moon, Jaguar Jack, Royal Rebel, and Home for the Holidays The Friends of the Library encourage

Miro Quartet Bringing the Brilliance of Beethoven to Cerritos

Rhythm of the Dance Brings Dance and Blarney

By Glen Creason The minute they strode resolutely to the stage, the Miro Quartet literally set the tone for an evening of no-nonsense genius from Beethoven at his most angst-ridden and serious self. Dressed like characters from Mad Men: Daniel Ching and William Fedkenhuer on violins, John Largess on Viola and Joshua Grindele on cello wasted no time in launching into the no nonsense “Serioso” which was originally not intended for public performances but composed for connoisseurs who might be broad minded enough to accept the unexpected in this piece. Struggling with his imminent deafness and financial difficulties Beethoven goes to some deep and dark places here but rays of hope shine in at least two of the movements including the exuberant conclusion. Compared to the “Serioso,” the second Quartet “La Malinconia” began like a romantic breath of fresh air despite the melancholic name, taking the audience on an introspective journey with parts filled with tangible sweetness. The demanding scherzo seemed to give the Miro Quartet motivation

While the Miro gentlemen do not resort to much in stage color they put their talent into the music and made Beethoven’s genius shine forth. The String Quartet in c-sharp major, Opus 131 completed the concert which would be appropriate since it was one of Beethoven’s last and certainly one of the most memorable of all-time. The delicate

and exquisite opening Adagio of this seven part wonder just made the heart ache but it was just one of many evocative moments in this lengthy piece. While the entire ensemble played with great skill and inspiration the cello of Joshua Gindele was asked for much and the young man delivered it all. A highly appreciative crowd roared their approval and were rewarded with an encore of another Quartet from Opus 130 “the Cavatina” that was greatness emblazoned.

This program is long and full of brisk dancing, quaint musical selections and plenty of Vegas-tinged Blarney. As a matter of fact the first musical number was “Where the Blarney Roses Grow” as part of an Irish Music Hall medley. While the singing of the three ROTD tenors was fine and the tight reels and jigs of five person band were lively and sweet the focus was always on the flying feet of the dancers. A more comely group of lasses and lads you will not find and the obvious joy they felt in being able to dance made the show live and breathe. Particularly impressive were Doireann Carney and Nicola Kennedy for the ladies and tireless Connor Smyth who was quite literally the lord of this dance… performance. The delighted audience was given plenty for their money with over twenty numbers including “Northern Exposure” that exploded the “troubles” between the green and the orange and “Swing Time” that took the dance to New York in the 1920’s with trumpets and trombones joining the pipes, harp and flute. Still, the finest moments were the rousing ensemble number filled with flying feet and taps at what seemed like the speed of sound, like the appropriately named “journey’s end” to finish the full concert.

I guess it was Michael Flatley in the show “Riverdance” that bumped Irish step dancing onto the big stages and into the American imagination. Since that show and the ensuing “Lord of the Dance” in the early 1990’s the art of Irish dance has gone big time and spread out all over the world. Over the weekend Cerritos went step-Celtic with the very big and very polished “Rhythm of the Dance” show that rocked full houses and made many an Irish eye smile…so to speak. Rhythm is large scale from the towering backdrops to the video screens to the many costume changes to the very impressive dance talent throughout the troupe. There were also five live musicians aided by some recorded booming bass and all-important lighting that played a bigger part than most such shows.

Hawkins served as chair of the important Real Estate and Asset Management Special Committee. Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe was angered about the recent decision to remove Hawkins from his key slot. “I’m very upset to see Phil removed from his MWD seat. Phil has been a tireless advocate for the Southeast area on water issues and his tenure means a great deal on such a large Board as the MWD. His experience as Chair of the Real Estate and Asset Management Committee will be missed,” Knabe said. “When reached by phone, Hawkins was equally as angry, “They removed me for no reason. It’s all about egos. We were doing a good job there; we were actually making money. Roybal was going to take my seat, but his school commitments prevented that, so now Leticia will be taking the seat, and she has zero experience.” Roybal as president is now in a powerful position, responsible for forming committee, items that will be allowed on the agenda, and what contracts are vetted and reviewed before they come to a vote. Vasquez is no stranger to political controversy. South Gate Councilman Henry Gonzalez, who is considered to be one of the most respected elected officials in Southeast Los Angeles County told LCCN in an interview on Monday that Vasquez is as “dirty as they come.” “She was groomed by convicted felon and ex-Lynwood Mayor Paul Richards, she knows how to play dirty, and doesn’t care about rules. Leticia does what she wants,” the South Gate councilman said. In 2005, former longtime Mayor Paul Richards was convicted of steering $500,000

worth of city contracts to a front corporation he secretly owned and was sentenced to 16 years in federal prison. Gonzalez understands just how rough politics can be. In 1999, then at age 64, he was shot in the head by an assailant after he returned home from a South Gate City Council meeting. “Listen, I understand politics around here better than anyone. Everyone needs to pay attention on what’s going on over at the Central Basin Water District, especially in light of what has taken place just this past month alone,” said Gonzalez. Vasquez has also doled out campaign cash to both Gonzalez and Mayer in the past. Gonzalez was paid $4,000, and Mayer's firm R&M Associates garnered an additional $2,000 in past campaigns. Gonzalez owns Pyramid Printing in Los Angeles and is a well known figure in Southeast politics and recall campaigns and has also done work for former Artesia Assemblyman Tony Mendoza, as well as several local city councilmembers. and assist the refinery firm in establishing its corporate identity in proximity to the 91 Freeway in order to promote sales. With the Tesoro sales and marketing operations housed in La Palma, the City is expected to benefit from unanticipated sales tax revenue that will help fund essential services such as police and public safety, maintenance of public infrastructure, code enforcement and building safety. Of utmost importance is being able to neutralize the close to a million-dollar deficit and regain more or less the approximately $2 million lost in sales tax revenues. BP recently elected to sell its Carson Refinery and ARCO Retail Network to Tesoro among its other international assets to repay costs stemming from the oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. Tesoro agreed to pay $1.18 billion for the refinery and 800 ARCO branded gas stations and $1.3 billion for the refinery’s existing inventory.

Tesoro’s latest purchase will bring its number of California refineries to three (Wilmington, Martinez and Carson) accounting for 60% of the company’s total refining capacity. The 266,000 barrels-per-day Carson Refinery shares a fence line with the 97,000 bpd Wilmington refinery enabling Tesoro to combine the two refineries into one facility and realize about $250 million in saving costs. Production wise, this spells good fortune for La Palma as the ARCO gas-brand sales network has a huge product supply to sell in the Southland. The BP deal that is contingent to the review and approval of the Federal Trade Commission would double Tesoro’s refinery operations in California and make the San Antonio-based company the second largest refinery company in the state after Chevron Corp. Wall Street Journal reported that Tesoro expects to close the deal with BP/ARCO by the middle of 2013.

Los Cerritos Community Newspaper endorses longtime community leader and business owner George Ray in the March 5th Cerritos City Council election. George Ray will bring intelligence and a sharp business sense to a City Council that is in dire need of a new fresh start. Ray likes to tell voters that he moved to Cerritos when there were “thousands of cows and chickens.” That’s a plus in our book because Ray knows where Cerritos came from and how it was molded. Ray has been involved in Cerritos since 1969. When he and his family moved into what used to be a cow pasture, Ray quickly became a leader by pitching in and doing the heavy lifting by serving as a key member of the Planning Commission and helping start local civic organizations. Ray knows what Cerritos is all about. He “gets it.” We also like the fact that Ray has built a successful private business here in the community and understands what it means to meet a payroll week in and week out. When elected, we hope that Ray will work hard to cut waste and to trim the fat off that preverbal “cow” that has become both a curse and an asset here in Cerritos. We do have some concerns that Ray has many personal relationships with people who think the “status quo” is the rule at Cerritos City Hall. Los Cerritos Community Newspaper will keep an eye on Ray, but first voters need to do the right thing and vote for him on March 5.

Elections in La Mirada for city council haven’t been a contact sport, until this year. With the recent arrest of Mayor Gabe Garcia on drunken driving allegations this campaign for two city council slots has become a barnburner in the city that rarely gets into the political fray. Garcia has lost the confidence of the community, and his peers, and he should have done the right thing and drop out of this campaign. But, he chooses to stay and now the voters of La Mirada must move forward by electing Planning Commissioner Steve Keithly on March 5. The Lamplighter and Los Cerritos Community Newspaper are impressed with Keithly. He is a longtime resident, business owner, has a solid reputation, and is active with the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints where he served as a local Bishop. Keithly has told us that he won’t be beholden to anyone on the current city council, and isn’t afraid to challenge the “status quo” in La Mirada. We are going to hold off on a second endorsement for the next couple of weeks. Appointed Incumbent Pauline Deal needs to “step up” her game and become more engaged at city council meetings that seem to be far to “scripted” for our taste. La Mirada is just like every other community in Southeast Los Angeles County. It has a been on a fiscal rollercoaster, and it needs to have more transparency and participation from the community. Keithly will make a great councilmember. We urge his election.

ELECT ENRIQUE ARANDA FOR NORWALK CITY COUNCIL AND REELECT COUNCILMAN MIKE MENDEZ Los Cerritos Community Newspaper is proud to endorse Enrique Aranda to the Norwalk City Council on Tuesday, March 5, and to also urge voters to reelect veteran Councilman Mike Mendez. Aranda is an up and comer in Norwalk, even though he has spent most of his life in the community. Aranda is tough, outspoken, and not afraid to seek the truth in a time when too many local city council members tow the “company line” and “do as they are told” by powerful city administrators who are paid more than Members of Congress or even United States Senators. Aranda has the professionalism and will make a great city councilman who we hope voters will do the “right thing” by supporting Aranda. LCCN also urges the reelection of Norwalk City Councilman Mike Mendez. Mendez is an icon in the Norwalk community having spent his entire life in the city. Mendez is a solid leader whose bold vision and determination help result in the expansion of Interstate 5 that runs through the heart of 90650. Mendez and Aranda may not see eyeto-eye on all issues, and that’s okay with us. But, we know that the two will be able to move Norwalk into a new direction. We also urge that voters in Norwalk soundly defeat incumbent Mayor Cheri Kelley who has been a complete failure

ELECT FRANK AURELIO YOKOYAMA FOR CERRITOS CITY COUNCIL Los Cerritos Community Newspaper is urging the election of Frank Aurelio Yokoyama to the Cerritos City Council on Tuesday, March 5. Yokoyama will bring a new sea of change at Cerritos City Hall, one that has been needed for quite some time. While we have some concerns about Yokoyama over recent revelations that he got into hot water with the California Bar Association this past year, we applaud Yokoyama for “owning up” to his misstep. Yokoyama is a firebrand member of the Cerritos Planning Commission who isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo or to ask the tough questions. VALLEY VIEW GRADE New Multi-Media Arts Center at Whitney High is a ‘Jewel’ SEPARATION PROJECT ON TRACK By Rico Dizon

Temporary Valley View Closure Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. to Feb. 25 at 5 a.m. Construction crews are making noticeable progress on the Valley View Avenue Grade Separation Project. The $65 million project includes lowering Valley View to go under a new bridge that will carry railroad traffic. These measures will eliminate the existing at-grade crossing between the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad tracks and Valley View. Utility crews are re-routing underground gas, water, storm drain and sewer lines along Valley View Avenue and overhead electrical lines have been relocated on Stage Road. Retaining walls are under construction at the northeast and northwest corners of the Valley View/Stage intersection. The railroad tracks and Valley View Avenue will be temporarily diverted in the coming weeks to allow crews to work on the railroad bridge structure. Valley View will be closed from Thursday, Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. to Monday, Feb. 25 at 5 a.m. This closure is needed to complete the temporary realignment of the railroad tracks and Valley View. A detour route will be available through Santa Fe Springs from Rosecrans to the north and Gannet to the south. Access to local businesses and homes will be provided during the closure. Valley View Avenue carries some 40,000 vehicles daily. Once the project is completed, vehicle traffic on Valley View will travel under the railroad. “We are looking forward to continued progress on this major project,” says City Manager Tom Robinson. “Once completed, this new grade separation will enhance traffic safety, assist local economic activity and reduce vehicle delays and idling.” The grade separation project is a joint effort of the cities of La Mirada, Santa Fe Springs, Caltrans Division of Rail, and BNSF Railway. It is also part of a $163 million, 15-mile track expansion, known as the Triple Track Project, which lays an additional third track next to two existing lines. Much of the third track has been completed through La Mirada. The Valley View Avenue Grade Separation project will be completed by the end of 2014.

Well, I guess the previous issue on whose name should the new Multi- Media Arts Center be called was finally laid to rest. My proof? The official name now displayed at the building facade itself: WHS Multi-Media Arts Center. It is neither the name of the former school principal nor the former huge donor. The WHS Multi-Media Arts Center was formally opened last month with a guided tour of its brand-new facilities which in the words of the WHS Principal Dr. Rhonda Buss will “make the Whitney students stay competitive in the modern world of technology and entertainment.” The tour which was conducted with the assistance of the students included the computer lab, audio/visual studio for the

Broadcast Journalism and Film Making classes, the Green Room (basically the dressing room) and the main theater that opened with the performance by Whitney High School Band that evening. In her speech during the program, Dr. Buss said, “with the WHS Multi Media Center which they fondly refer to as MAC now a reality, we have so much to be very thankful for, from the generous funding from the ABC School District which was matched by the State and from numerous and kind donors in the community” among them the Shah Family as Gold Donors, which she made special mention of. Dr. Buss also thanked ABC-USD Superintendent Dr. Mary Sieu together with her Board after which Dr. Sieu was presented with a bouquet of flowers in demonstration of the school’s deep appreciation. Then, the school principal called on Cerritos Mayor Jim Edwards and City Council Members who presented her the Plaque of Proclamation for MAC. The grand opening program was

capped with a presentation by Whitney High School Drama/Musical Productions directed by Mrs. Jodi Improta. Afterwards, a simple reception exclusively for donors was held.

La Palma resident Christopher Dorner has died after a massive shoot out with law enforcement officials in the Big Bear area this past Tuesday afternoon. Dorner was one of the most wanted figures in America before the fatal final gun fight took place. Tens of millions of television viewers watched each and every moment of the dramatic ending. Details about the Dorner crime spree were outlined in court documents obtained by Los Cerritos Community Newspaper this past Monday. In the five page complaint that was filed in the Central District of California on February 7th in Orange County, Dorner was charged with violating Title 18 of the United States Code, Section 1073. US Magistrate Judge Marc L. Goldman issued a warrant for Dorner’s arrest on that same day from his Santa Ana courtroom. Dorner, whose full name in the complaint was listed as “Christopher Jordan Dorner,” is alleged to have shot and killed Monica Quan, 28, and Keith Lawrence, 27 in a parking lot at a housing complex in Irvine. It was later learned that Quan was the daughter of former Los Angeles Police Department official Randall Quan. The complaint also stated that on, or about February 6, Dorner posted on his Facebook page a lengthy message issuing violent threats against LAPD officials, including Robert Quan, as well as their families. The message indicated that Dorner “may have already begun carrying out threats.” Also on that same day, February 6, the Orange County Superior Court issued an arrest warrant for Dorner and was charged with multiple violations of California Pe-

Then on February 7, Los Angeles Police Department issued a press release that claims that an “eyewitness reported seeing an individual in Corona matching Dorner’s description at a gas station and reported his sighting to an LAPD officer who was detailed to the area to protect one of the officials who Dorner threatened in his 11,000 plus word “manifesto.” When the officer exited his vehicle and fired as assault rifle at the officer, hitting the officer’s vehicle. The complaint went on to state that at 2 a.m., in Riverside, to Riverside Police Department officers who were in the area searching for Dorner were fired upon by an “unidentified assailant” while they were in their police vehicle at a red light. Both of the officers were struck by bullets, and one of them, Officer Michael Crain died. Crain was laid to rest in an emotion funeral on Thursday in the Inland Empire. Then, around an hour later at approximately 3 a.m., Detective Robert Anschick from the San Diego Police Department said that a boat captain in San Diego called and reported that a man matching Dorner’s description had “subdued him and attempted to steal his boat.” The witness, who is believed to be in his 80’s, told investigators that Dorner said he would be taking the boat to Mexico, and that the boat would be able to be “recovered there.” The elderly man then went on to claim that the attempt to steal his boat “failed” when the bow line of the boat became caught in the boat’s propeller, and that the suspect, believed to be Dorner then fled the scene. Hours later, Detectives from the San

Diego Police Department later found Dorner’s “personal belongings” including his wallet and identification cards, near the US/Mexico border at the San Ysidro Point of Entry. A gate guard at the Point Loma Naval Base in San Diego reported that later that same day, he had seen a man matching Dorner’s description attempting to gain access to the military base. Also on February 7, Randall Quan told investigators that he had received a call from a man who identified himself to be Dorner at around 12:30 p.m. who stated that he (Dorner) “should have done a better job of protecting his daughter.” That call to Quan eventually was traced to a phone located in Vancouver, Washington. The filing also confirmed that the US Marshal’s had also been “tracking” the movements of one a man only identified at with the initials “J.Y.” who is a “known associate of Dorner.” The complaint claims that a family member of “J. Y.” owns a residential property in Arrow Bear, California in the San Bernardino Mountains. Then at approximately 12:45 p.m., members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s found a vehicle matching the one in which the “suspect” in the Corona shooting had been seen, a gray 2005 Nissan Titan. The vehicle was burning at the time of the discovery. The court filing also claimed that a suspect matching Dorner’s description attempting to flee to Mexico and that there is “probably cause” to believe that the La Palma resident has “move and traveled in interstate and foreign commerce from California to Mexico with the intent to avoid prosecution.”

COMPUTERS FROM CHRISTOPHER DORNER’S LA PALMA HOME TARGETED IN RAID BY US MARSHALLS By Randy Economy The La Palma home of suspected killer Christopher Dorner was raided on Friday by several law enforcement agencies in hopes of collecting more information that could lead to the arrest of one of America’s most wanted fugitives. Los Cerritos Community Newspaper was one of the first news agencies to arrive on Sharon Drive to witness heavily armed officials from the US Marshalls, Irvine Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the La Palma Police Department enter the family residence of Dorner. Within an hour, several dozen reporters and television news helicopters were camped back in front of Dorner’s residence. Dorner’s mother, a registered nurse for Kaiser Permanente, allowed the armed officers to enter her now infamous quaint, well groomed home. Irvine Police Lieutenant Bill Whalen told Los Cerritos Community Newspaper that Dorner’s personal computers were the focus of the search warrant. “We are going to take our time and to gather as much potential evidence as possible here today,” Whalen said. Whalen would not comment about specific details of the investigation surrounding Dorner. “We are interested in his computers, and that is the focus of our efforts,” Whalen said. Several neighbors gathered outside the Dorner home, including La Palma City Councilman Gerard Goedhart who lives “just around the corner” from Sharon Drive. “We are all praying that this situation can come to an end quickly,” Goedhart said. Also involved in the raid was the Orange County Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory Unit. At least eight officers from that agency were seen going in and out of the Dorner home. Another neighbor, who did not want to be publicly identified, said that she had “deep feelings” for the Dorner family, “especially for his mother.” “I can’t believe she and his sister have to live this nightmare. This is not going to end well, and these two amazing women are going to have to have a heavy Cross to carry for the rest of their lives,” the neighbor said. Dorner, who was fired from the Los Angeles Police Department in 2008, outlined plans to kill law enforcement officers and their family members in rambling 11,400 words “manifesto” that members of the media obtained this past Tuesday night.

Griffin-McNair Paces Norwalk to a Share of Suburban League Title SUBURBAN LEAGUE BASKETBALL By Loren Kopff lorenkopff@aol.com

A Suburban League girls basketball title was something that has eluded the Norwalk program for a very long time and even longer for head coach Richard Drake. But on a night when Drake was being honored by former players whom he had coached at John Glenn in the 1990s, it was his current team that sealed a share of the crown on the same court where he had coached for 13 seasons. Behind 19 points, 10 rebounds and six steals from senior center Maiya GriffinMcNair, the Lady Lancers cruised past Glenn 50-29 last Friday night in the regular season finale for both teams. Norwalk tied Mayfair for the league championship, the first for Norwalk since 1995 and the first for Drake since 1992. “I thought I would be more excited than I was,” Drake said. “I think in some ways it was anticlimactic because of the ceremony that took place. I couldn’t get emotionally involved for something that took place like that. The girls were extremely excited. I told them to win with class. So, we didn’t celebrate on the court. We waited, got behind the side doors [of John Glenn’s gymnasium] and we celebrated for about 15 minutes. I think that was the appropriate thing to do.” With the score 7-4 with 3:09 left in the first quarter, the Lady Lancers went

on a 19-0 run over a seven minute span that sealed the win. During that stretch, Griffin-McNair scored 11 points. In the first half alone, she had 13 points on six of nine shooting from the field. In fact, she single handily outscored the Lady Eagles by three points in the half. Glenn missed its first seven shots of the second quarter before junior Myra Gomez ended Norwalk’s scoring spree with 3:06 remaining in the first half. When it was all said and done, Glenn was limited to less than 30 points for the third straight game and 13th time in 26 games this season. “We couldn’t score,” said John Glenn head coach Linda Parra. “We were a team full of lots of injuries. We were never healthy. We had a lot of sickness this year, more than before. But we literally couldn’t score a basket and we couldn’t hang onto the ball. We averaged over 30 turnovers a game.” But clearly, the night belonged to Norwalk, which finished a game short of Mayfair for the league title last season. The Lady Lancers (19-8 overall, 11-1 in league) won 19 regular season games for the second straight season and have lost twice since Dec. 28. “Obviously your goal is to win [a league title] but we struggled so much in the middle of the season,” Drake said. “The Cantwell Tournament threw us for a loop and I didn’t know what we were going to have coming into league.” Norwalk received eight points each from senior guards Cristina Batarse and Brenda Venegas with the former also picking up five rebounds and three steals. walk defeated Glenn for the fourth straight time and Drake is 9-3 against his former school. “I didn’t come in planning to press her,” Drake said of Parra’s team. “But her team was playing a match on Maiya on the inside and it’s the third game in a row where we’ve played a team that matched us on Maiya and it affects us. I told the girls at the [end of] the [third] quarter to up the ante. We had to go to full-court press.” “[Norwalk] looked better in the first round than they did in this round,” Parra said. “They have moments where they look very good and they have moments where you think, ‘okay, our league is down’. But I think the first time we played them, they looked like a league championship team. Tonight they were average.” In six short seasons that Drake has been at the helm of the Norwalk program, he has gone to playoffs each time and has posted a 93-70 record. His overall mark between the two schools, as he enters his California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section Division II-A first round playoff game against Dos Pueblos on Saturday, is 266-186. “I’m proud to say that this probably will be my last year,” Drake said. “In my years since 1987…to have four [league] championships in the Suburban League is something to be proud of. When I took Glenn over, they weren’t winning. When I took Norwalk over, they weren’t winning. I always like the challenge and to meet this challenge and to help the Glenn kids in the 90s and the Norwalk kids now is something I’m very proud of.” Glenn (8-18, 2-10) was led by senior Angie Console, who scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Gomez, who came off the bench to add eight points, pull down five boards and have four steals. Glenn has finished with consecutive eightwin seasons and will miss the playoffs for the fourth time in the past six seasons and fifth time in Parra’s 11 seasons at Glenn. She replaced Drake prior to the 2002-2003 campaign. “The positives [from this season] are we got our young girls playing time,” Parra said. “They got their feet wet a little bit. Like I was telling [Norwalk assistant coach] Emily [Osongco], there was no tension. They really enjoyed [this season]. How can you enjoy eight wins? But they really enjoyed this season and they’re sad that it has ended. I’m glad I didn’t have drama. They just showed up and worked hard. Revamped Norwalk Squad Knocks Shorthanded John Glenn out of Playoff Contention SUBURBAN LEAGUE BOYS SOCCER By Loren Kopff lorenkopff@aol.com

It was the last day of the regular season and the John Glenn boys soccer team needed a win plus a La Mirada victory over Mayfair in order to reach the playoffs. Standing in its way, though, was city rival Norwalk, which had already locked up second place in the Suburban League. Behind a vaunted defensive stand, especially in the final moments of the game and a pressing offense that took 14 shots on goal, the host Lancers held on to a 1-0 victory last Thursday afternoon that ended any chances of the Eagles continuing their season. The win put an exclamation point on a monster turnaround from last season. Norwalk struggled last season and although they went to the playoffs for the seventh straight season, the Lancers ended with a 9-9-4 mark and finished in fourth place. This season, Norwalk goes into the playoffs with a 14-4-1 record, 10-2-0 in league action. “Last year we struggled with some guys not being here,” Pluma said. “The seniors we did have struggled from the year

they came in as freshmen. So those kids struggled all the way through. But luckily we still made it to the playoffs. But these kids right here are young. We had three sophomores rotating in [today] plus one who is ineligible. So we have four sophomores who will be returning plus some juniors who will be returning.” After finishing in third place last season and compiling an 8-7-4 record, the Eagles went 5-9-2 overall, 3-7-2 in the circuit and fell to fifth place. Even if the Eagles had won, they didn’t get any other help as Mayfair knocked off La Mirada and claimed fourth place and four points ahead of Glenn. “There was no type of discipline,” said John Glenn head coach Javier Romero of this season. “There was very, very low discipline. They don’t know how to play the ball with their body.” The Lancers got the break they needed in the 17th minute when senior midfielder Jose Mora took a free kick outside the left corner of the penalty box and after a couple of bounces, it landed to senior forward Jose Rodriguez who was facing the opposite way but his bicycle kick got past Glenn senior goalkeeper Jorge Melendez. After that, Glenn’s self esteem went a few notches down and Norwalk kept its intensity up. In the 32nd minute, Glenn ju-

nior midfielder Ruben Martinez received his second yellow card and was disqualified from the game, which left the Eagles a man down the rest of the way. Two minutes later, Glenn senior defender Jose Velez received a yellow card and the result left Mora with a free kick which was saved on a Melendez dive at the left post. “When Ruben got the red card, the team fell apart a little bit but still held on to the 1-0 [deficit],” Romero said. Norwalk had several opportunities to increase its lead early in the second half. However, junior defender Anthony Mendoza’s shot on an open net sailed too high over the crossbar in the 49th minute. One minute later, junior forward Jorge Perez got loose on a breakaway midway through the Glenn defense. But his open shot went wide left. “We can’t miss opportunities against good teams,” Pluma said. “I think we were extra cautious than we usually are. Some teams are not high scoring teams and I think we’re more cautious on defense when it comes to that.” Those missed chances left the door open for a shorthanded Eagles squad but it wasn’t until the 73rd minute that they made a desperate attempt to tie the game. In the 79th minute, a corner kick from Glenn senior Octavio Rivera was deflected away and two minutes into stoppage time, sophomore Enrique Cuevas went up high towards Martinez and was issued a red card for spiking the goalkeeper on an apparent shot attempt. “The goalkeeper did what he had to do,” Romero said. “We didn’t know how to create opportunities and take advantage of the opportunities we had up top with our forwards.” Norwalk, the seventh ranked team in the California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section Division IV poll, will host Ganesha today in the first round. Ganesha, the second place representatives from the Montview League, have a 7-10-5 record.

Norwalk went on first quarter runs of 9-1 and 14-3, then reeled off 12 straight points in the second quarter after the Eagles had crept to with an 1813 deficit after an offensive put back from sophomore forward Daniel Morales. “They’ve improved since the first game [with us] and they started making a lot of shots in the second half,” said Norwalk head coach Jim Webster. “They scored almost 40 in the second half. It was a good thing we were able to keep the lead comfortable because if it got tight, I was going to get worried.” By halftime, the Lancers had a 32-19 lead behind 11 points from junior guard Alex Vidana and 10 points from senior center Ralph Wormley. But the Eagles came out blazing in the third quarter, connecting on their first seven shots, most coming from junior guards Ardale Encabo (nine points) and Erich Webb (11 points). How-

ever, the Lancers were also on a hot streak in the third quarter, missing four times in 16 tries from the field. As a result, Glenn could not get closer than nine points. “I was happy that they were able to score but our biggest issue was defense,” said Glenn first-year head coach Wesley Phillips. “We let them score a whole lot more than we did. That’s always been our problem-defense.” Wormley led everyone with a careerhigh 23 points and was a perfect six for six from the field in the third quarter. It was the second time in two weeks that Wormley had scored at least 20 points. Vidana added 14 points as the Lancers will travel to Dos Pueblos tonight for their Division II-A first round game. “He’s making lay-ups,” Webster said of Wormley. “Did he hit a shot over four feet? I doubt it. But we worked against the zone the last two days making those passes and they converted.” This will be the fourth time in the last five seasons that Webster has taken his teams to the playoffs. While the Lancers went 7-5 in league play, they could have easily been 10-2. Three of those losses ended in one possession games. Last sea-
