Media Converge on Quiet Cerritos Cul-Da-Sac in Search of Anti-Islamic Film Maker La Mirada ponders

‘Charter City’ option

By Randy Economy Throngs of media from all over the world converged on a quiet Cerritos cul-d-sac on Thursday morning after it was revealed that an anti-Islamic filmmaker responsible for sparking worldwide violent protests was staying hidden inside his two story home. The Cerritos resident who allegedly goes by the name of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55 appeared to be hidden inside his Park Street home while at least 30 media trucks, and dozens reporters and photographers attempted to contact the filmmaker. Lying out in front of the home was a large solid oak head board, and a tat-

After being a under the guise of the State of California as a General Law City since its inception 50 years ago, officials are now exploring the idea of dramatically changing the direction of the cash strapped municipality in 2013 by asking voters to declare La Mirada a “charter city.” Deputy City Manager Jeff Boynton told Mayor Gabe Garcia and members of the city council in a report that changing the way La Mirada is configured and classified from one to the other, would allow for greater local

Norwalk County Library Celebrates 100th Anniversary Sue Kane, Librarian for the County of Los Angeles in Norwalk presents a special award to Norwalk Mayor Cherie Kelley and Los Cerritos Community Newspaper Reporter Randy Economy during the 100th Anniversary Birthday Party held last weekend.

Participating in the Ribbon Cutting to celebrate the “next hundred years” of the Los Angeles County Library system is former Norwalk Mayor Gordon Stefenhagen, Councilman Marcel Rodarte, Librarian Sue Kane, Mayor Cherie Kelley, Councilman Leonard Shryock, and Norwalk-La Mirada School Board President Daryl Adams. Libraries, and many members of the long time organization were in attendance. The Norwalk Regional Library started out in July of 1913 as the 17th branch in the sprawling county through the efforts of a committee called the “Commercial Club.” That first “collection” included 500 books and was housed in a second floor room of the historical Stiffer Building at 537 E. Front Street. Kane pointed out to those attending the event that when oil was discovered in nearby Santa Fe Springs in the 1920’s there was a population boom in Norwalk, and in January 1926 the library moved to a larger facility located at 13620 S. San Antonio Drive. In 1956, a year before the city of Norwalk was officially incorporated as a city a new library building was opened across

from the old one on San Antonio Drive. The current 39,000 square foot building at 12350 Imperial Highway opened in July of 1969. “It was an exciting period for the community back in the mid 1950’s,” Economy told the crowd of more than 100 in attendance. Economy served as the Public Information Officer for the City of Norwalk in the early 1980’s as well as a former city editor of the Norwalk Herald American. Also addressing the gathering was Mayor Cherie Kelley, Former Mayor Gordon Steffenhagen, Councilman Leonard Shryock, Councilman Marcel Rodarte, and Daryl Adams, President of the Norwalk-La Mirada. 

Economy, who is also a reporter with Hews Media Group, the owner of the Los Cerritos Community Newspaper and the La Mirada Lamplighter, took visitors on a “walk down memory lane” through rare photographs that dated back to the late 1800’s, well before Norwalk’s incorporation as a municipality. The event is expected to draw an excess of 3,000 dogs competing for the top prizes in Conformation, Obedience and Rally. Proceeds from the show benefit the local communities. As a not for profit dog club, SAVKC has proudly

donated to local schools, community organizations and sporting groups for the past 62 years. The University of California Irvine Medical Center’s Department of Cardiology will be present to provide cardiac health screenings for exhibitors and visitors alike. In addition, a host of vendors will offer pet supplies and products of all types, featuring many items that are not normally seen in pet stores or hobby shops. Vendors include Davis Animal Supply, Natures Pharmacy, and SurfCity BitchWear to just to name a few. SAVKC is also proud to have Wounded Warriors in attendance. This years show is sure to have a little something for everyone. Pets and dogs not entered in the show are not allowed on the grounds. This rule is strictly enforced to ensure the health and safety of those in competition. Remember to ask before you pet any strange dogs. If you have any questions please feel free to talk to any of the SAVKC volunteers in the red or white shirts. Bring the family and enjoy watching dogs of all breeds “strut their stuff” and learn how to keep your pet healthy while supporting your community. For more information, visit www.savkc.org.

Tim Rushlow-over 11 Million albums sold; ACM Award winner; CMA Award winner; 3-time Grammy Award nominee. Hits include: "What Might Have Been", "God Blessed Texas", "You and Forever and Me", "Amy's Back in Austin", "She Misses Him". Marty Roe-lead singer of multi-platinum selling group Diamon Roe who won a Grammy for the Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album. Sounded like a great concert, and our resident critic Glen Creason agreed. Despite the talent, only 206 attended the concert, that’s right only 206 people. This is an all-time low for the CCPA and a real embarrassment to the iconic theater; none of this the fault of CCPA staff. Back in June, despite Dianne Cheney, Executive Director of the CCPA showing strong evidence that advertising sells tickets, the Cerritos City Council cut most print and radio advertising (LA Times, OC Register, Los Cerritos Community News) to the CCPA.

If you read this paper you know why they cut the budget; Mayor pro tem Barrows led the council to cut the budget because of our coverage of his assault of Jay Gray. Who knows what Barrows offered the council to vote 5-0, I am sure we will find out at the next Mayoral transition. There is a direct correlation between the council cutting the print/radio advertising for the CCPA and the Friday turnout. As Cheney said, “60-70% of our sales come from the mailed brochure, the remaining 30% from advertising.” It is a real shame that the anger of one misguided councilman can cause so much collateral damage. Barrows wanted to hurt this paper for our coverage of his assault, and it did not matter who else was in the way not even the venerable CCPA. As VAL LYNDER DEFENDER OF ALL THAT IS TRUE would say-while slamming her polka-dotted umbrella on the desk, “this is terrible and something needs to be done”! I agree VAL. 

“Good morning VAL LYNDER, I answered. “You seem content.” “I am,” she replied. “I happened to attend the “Back to School” Convocation held by the ABC School District in Cerritos High School Gymnasium. There must have been more than a thousand teachers, and administrators present.” “What were you doing there?” I asked. “You don’t teach school.” “If you must know, I was invited by a teacher who happens to be a friend. Furthermore, “ she continued,” I have a teaching credential in my home state.” “I decided not to pursue the subject further, since I knew I couldn’t win. “So what did you think about it?” I asked. “I saw a breath of fresh air,” she answered. For the first time the Mayors

from Lakewood, Hawaiian Gardens, and Cerritos were present and spoke to the group. The Mayor of Artesia couldn’t make it, but he was there in spirit. “Abruptly, VAL LYNDER changed the subject. “Last Friday I attended a country western performance by The Frontmen of Country featuring Tim Rushlow, Larry Stewart and Marty Roe at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.” “How did you like it,” I asked. “They were good but the size of the audience was small. I couldn’t believe it.” “How small is small,” I inquired. “Small:, she replied. “I was shocked, because the performers were good.”

Thereafter, Mr. Joves became the Surface Warfare Supply Corps Officer on board the USS Gray FF-1054 Fast Frigate/Destroyer. Dan, a humble but conscientious worker and community leader provided 20 years of honorable service to the U.S. Navy. He retired on May 1, 1989 as the Supply Officer Department Head at SIMA/NRMF Long Beach, CA. Following his retirement, he worked as a Real Estate/Mortgage Broker. He served as president and later as board chairman of Malasiquinians of America, Southern California Chapter. With his active involvement, he initiated many activities and projects to support the people of his hometown. Thereafter, he was appointed by Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA's past president Dan E. Nino as Chairman of the Ways & Means Committee. After one year, he asked to be excused to nurse his cancer

condition. He also served as member of the Cerritos City Let Freedom Ring Committee. As member of the St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, he served the church as a religious education teacher. Dan is survived by Elvie, his wife of 33 years; daughter Melissa; son Jason; daughter and her spouse Kristine and Cenicio Ulit, Jr. and grandson Emmett. He is also survived by his parents Pio and Marciana Joves and his seven sisters and brothers: joji, Lory, Jay, Bing, May, Anna and Bong. His remains were interred at the Cypress Memorial Park. Dan E. Nino in his statement to PBUSA's website said, “Pangasinenses mourn the untimely passing of a decent community brother and leader. He was not easily provoked during heated meeting discussions but exuded a quiet dignity and calming presence.”

An alert neighbor called Cerritos Station and deputies interrupted the crime and arrested both suspects. On Thursday September 6 at 10:40 a.m. a male entered a gas station in the 16800 clock of Norwalk Boulevard and produced a handgun. The salesclerk ran out of the building and the suspect was forced to leave without any money. Residential burglaries remained the same at three last week. An unlocked door and window were used as entry points and a door was kicked in during the third crime. A bicycle was the only reported loss. The 2012 weekly average in residential burglaries is now 4.6. Alert neighbors are instrumental in the apprehension of criminals. As with the attempted robbery described above, one call was all it took to get deputies on the scene and the results were in the best interests of all involved (except for the criminals!) Don’t hesitate to call the Sheriff’s Station if you see someone or something suspicious. Two commercial burglaries were recorded compared to three the week before. A fitness center locker and a close business were targeted. A wallet was the only item determined to be missing. The 2012 weekly average in “other structure”/commercial burglaries is 2.0. Vehicle burglaries dropped from eight to four last week. High-volume commercial parking lots were the crime scenes in three of the recent cases. Three were SUVs. A flashlight, knives, a wallet, cell phones, MP3 players and CDs were stolen. The 2012 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 7.4. SUVs, vans, and pick-up trucks are not equipped with secure trunk space that hold

There hasn’t been a Broadway musical on that stage in a long time. When the Center first opened it featured at least two or more per season. Second, its time to feature today’s artists, not those who held the spotlight 25 years ago.” VAL LYNDER looked at me. Isn’t that what they are doing?” she asked. “I thought you were a supporter of the theater.” “I am, “I answered, “ but with the country still in recession, people aren’t going to buy tickets for just any show. The up and coming performers may be good, but if the audience don’t know who they are, they won’t buy tickets.”

and conceal property. These types of vehicles were involved in three of the four vehicle burglaries reported, and are clearly in the majority again this year. Thieves are well aware of this and will rarely come up empty-handed after they break in. Keep this in mind and avoid leaving anything at all of value in these types of vehicles. No vehicle thefts were reported last week. Two were logged the three previous consecutive weeks. The new 2012 weekly average in vehicle thefts remained at 3.1. I understand it take up to two years after a contract is signed before the act appears on stage.” “I don’t know,” I replied. “I do know they have cut back on their expenses but I don’t know if its just cutbacks or if they did a comprehensive review that includes their advertising as well as what they can afford to pay their performers.” VAL LYNDER didn’t say a word. Finally she said, while sitting in her chair, tapping her umbrella on the floor. “I would have thought they would have done that already.” I could see her mood was changing. I slowly began to clear my desk. Finally she said, “All I have to say is they better get their act together.” VAL LYNDER slowly rose from her chair. “It’s such a beautiful theater,” she lamented. Saying that and without warning her purple poker dotted umbrella landed on my desk.

hen this writer was a high school student the learning adage of “Reading, Writing and Arithmetic” were the three basic keys to an education. This basic premise still holds true but today’s student faces a more complicated world, with the basics covering a much larger playing field. Many of today’s school districts are meeting this challenge using a combination of modern technology and innovative programs in the classroom. At ABC Unified School District one of the ways it is meeting this challenge is through its Adult Education School under the direction of Principal Dr. Pao-Ling Guo and Assistant Principal Chuck Minear who outlined a career path and schedule for high school juniors and seniors to members of the Board of Education at its Aug.14 meeting. Minear proposed a Career Academy that offers professional level career education ending with nationally recognized industry certification. With concurrent enrollment with their high school, students can graduate with a high school diploma and an Industry Certification, which allows them to obtain higher paying entrylevel jobs at graduation. At the same time students who wish to continue onto college can help pay for their higher education without incurring a heavy student loan debt. The Program would offer nationally recognized Industry Certifications along with 10 to 20 high school concurrent enrollment credits per semester. This allows the home school to claim ADA (Average Daily Attendance) for the student even through the student is taking the courses at ABC’s Career Academy. Students enrolled in the program would graduate from their home school. Under the program they would go to their home school until after lunch. Then they would attend academy classes at specified class sites. Initial classes will include Medical Assistant Clinical, Medical Billing and Coding Certification, Design and Graphics Certification, and Information Technology Certification. Minear explained classes for Medical would be held at the Cabrillo Lane Adult School Campus from 1:30 to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. He said a summer introduction class would be held at the Adult School. Classes for Design and Technology would also be held at the Cuesta Adult School Campus from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students would earn 10 credits per semester or 20 for medical assistant. Students interested in the program have to fill out an application and go through an interview before being accepted into the Academy. The class counts toward technology and AB1330 graduation requirements with board approval. In addition the State of California credentials all teachers instructing under the program. Adult School Principal Dr. Pao-ling Guo said, “Future plans include expanding our career path offerings and applying for UC Credit for applicable courses and adding AutoCAD. “Right now.” She added, “the Adult School has more than 1,000 students coming to do their credit recovery after school hours.” Minear explained, “These are students who failed a course and come to Adult School in the afternoon or evening to make the grade up. This summer we had more than 400 students who didn’t take their health class in ninth grade and have to make it up in order to graduate.” Dr. Guo said we have make up tests for

College Board standards. We also have senior classes that can be made up that are needed for graduation. Asked how this fits in with the Career Education program, Minear said it previously didn’t. He explained Adult Education is set up by the State to service students 18 years and over. But the law allows Adult School to serve 10 percent of its student enrollment as high schoolers as young as 16 years old. He said we started to look at the 10 percent we are allowed to serve and the programs that have been successful with adults and let our high school students take advantage of them. Asked about certification under the Career Education program Minear replied the students could get certified in all of the classes offered. “We don’t offer any that the students can’t get certified in.”Dr. Guo cited the medical assistant program, as an example, where students can take the national certification exam and be certified nationwide. Classes for Design and Technology, for example, would be held at the Cuesta Adult School Campus from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Classes count toward technology and AB 1330 graduation requirements with board approval. All teachers are credentialed by the State of California. Student would have the option to take the National Certification exam for their career path at their cost (average $125.) Minear said students taking any of the medical, technology or design classes could obtain national certification. “Right now,” he said we are working with Cerritos College on articulation agreements so our students can continue their education. At that point, he said, they can get a job at higher than minimum wage. Future plans include expanding the career path offerings and applying for UC Credit for applicable courses and adding AutoCAD. “Basically what we are trying to do is consolidate all the programs that use to be stand alone programs but because of budget cuts we are looking at how make them work across the district. The Career Academy is just one piece of this consolidation. Dr. Guo explained we are hoping our students will benefit by mentoring with our adult students professionally, learning skills before they graduate by bringing them into this Career Academy. Ann Griffo, District Coordinator of Career Technical Education and Business Partnerships noted that not every student may decide or be ready to go to college right out of high school. Some students may need to work, so ABCUSD is trying to provide as many opportunities and alternatives that will help make students successful. Offering high school students enrollment opportunities at Adult School, ROP or local colleges not only allows students to complete their high school education, but provides students an opportunity to learn a career-focused skill that will help them obtain employment in the workplace. Ann Griffo further explained that for some students concurrently enrolled in high school and college will have the opportunity to earn both high school and college credit. But students should first check with their high school counselor or the district Career Technical Education and Community Partnership Office for more specific information on dual enrollment and dual credit.

Eighth Annual Blood Collectors Week September 9-15 Blood that is donated saves lives in our community. Whittier, Calif. – Every day in the United States, tens of thousands of people rely on blood therapies for the treatment of critical medical conditions. Blood collectors are the crucial link between volunteer blood donors and the patients who count on these lifesaving therapies. The dedication and commitment of blood donors and blood collection professionals are the main reasons why blood is available when tragic events occur — such as car accidents, natural disasters, or serious illnesses — requiring blood transfusions. Blood collection professionals will be recognized September 9-15, 2012, in communities worldwide as part of the eighth annual Blood Collectors Week. During this week, blood centers will host celebrations, often with local government officials, to recognize their staff members and donors. Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital (PIH) has an onsite Blood Donor Center (BDC) as well as Blood Mobile Unit that is present at many offsite communitywide events to acquire blood and blood products needed for PIH patients. “Our Blood Donor Center staff ensures that we have a sufficient blood

Their contributions to PIH and our community members are greatly appreciated.” Blood Collectors Week is sponsored jointly by medical technology leader Fenwal, Inc. and AABB, the international association for professionals in transfusion medicine and cellular therapies. “These professionals are relied upon to provide a rewarding experience for volunteer blood donors so that the transfusion medicine community can continue to serve patients requiring lifesaving therapies,” said Karen L. Shoos, JD, chief executive officer of AABB. People typically receive transfusions of red blood cells, platelets or plasma. Red blood cells are the most frequently needed blood component. Blood collectors serve an important role helping individuals select the best donation option based on local blood supply needs, their blood type and donor qualifications. To donate blood, one must be healthy, and meet age, weight and other donor requirements. Community members are encouraged to honor blood professionals and the patients they serve by donating blood at PIH’s Blood Donor Center. The Blood Donor Center at PIH is open Monday through Thursday from 8 am

to 5 pm and on Friday, from 8 am to 4:30 pm (hours may vary due to community blood drives, please call first). The PIH Blood Mobile Unit is also available to host a community blood drive at your place of business or community event. Please call 562.789.LIFE (5433) to schedule your appointment today or email pihgotblood@yahoo. com. Share life, donate blood.

Continued from page 1 tered cloth sofa. On the doorstep was a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a pair of woman’s tennis shoes, and several flyers from local Cerritos area businesses. In addition, the front door was missing a bottom lock with a hole in the door that had masking tape affixed to the inside making it difficult. Los Cerritos Community Newspaper attempted to contact and interview Nakoula to no avail. The home is located near Frontier Park on the 12600 block of Park Street. While at the front door, an LCCN reporter could hear what appeared to be noise inside the home. Cerritos City Manager Art Gallucci told Los Cerritos Community Newspaper that he was informed early Thursday morning about the situation. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesperson Steve Whitmore was on scene briefing reporters with updates. Federal authorities identified Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, who was once convicted of financial crimes as the key figure behind the anti-Muslim film that ignited mob violence against U.S. embassies across the Mideast, a U.S. law enforcement official. US Attorney General Eric Holder said that Justice Department officials had opened a criminal investigation into the deaths of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other diplomats killed during an attack on the American mission in Benghazi. It was not immediately clear wheth-

er authorities were focusing on the Cerritos filmmaker as part of that probe. A federal law enforcement official said Thursday that Nakoula, 55, was the man behind ``Innocence of Muslims,'' a film denigrating Islam and the Prophet Muhammad that sparked protests earlier in the week in Egypt and Libya and now in Yemen. U.S. authorities are investigating whether the deaths of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Libya came during a terrorist attack. Associated Press also reported that Nakoula denied that he was Bacile and insisted he did not direct the film, though he said he knew Bacile. But, AP reported that federal court papers filed against Nakoula in a 2010 criminal prosecution said that he had used numerous aliases in the past. Among the fake names, the documents said, were Nicola Bacily, Robert Bacily and Erwin Salameh, all similar to the Sam Bacile persona. Other aliases described in the documents included Ahmad Hamdy, Kritbag Difrat and PJ Tobacco. During a conversation outside his home with a Associated Press, Nakoula offered his driver's license to show his identity but kept his thumb over his middle name, Basseley. Records checks by the AP subsequently found that middle name as well as other connections to the Bacile persona. The AP located Bacile after obtaining his cell phone number from Morris Sadek, a conservative Coptic Christian in the U.S. who had promoted the antiMuslim film in recent days on his website. CHARTER CITY

Continued from page 1 control instead of being bound by the rigors of lawmakers in Sacramento. Boynton said a charter city's powers are not defined or limited by the state's general laws, but rather they are defined by the city's own charter subject only to the limitations of the State Constitution. He said 121 of California’s 478 cities are charter cities, including 25 cities in Los Angeles County. Boynton also told city officials that making La Mirada a Charter City, members of the current and future city councils, rather than state officials would be “in the best position to understand its needs and make decisions to meet its local needs.” He said city charters legislate in the areas of municipal elections; municipal initiatives, referendums and recalls; procedures for the adoption of ordinances; public contracts; and public financing. Boynton also said that becoming a charter city could offer the City officials greater flexibility in public works contracts, economic development activities, municipal elections, zoning, and other matters. Charter Cities are still subject to the general laws passed

by the State Legislature on non-municipal affairs that are of statewide concern. Becoming a charter city would require the adoption of a new city charter by voters. Members of the La Mirada City Council also has the option of drafting the charter and submitting it to the voters for adoption or appoint a committee to develop the charter. If the City Council were interested in placing a charter city measure on the March 2013 municipal election ballot, it would need to pursue the option of drafting the charter on its own or with the assistance of a committee as was done recently with the Citizens Task Force. A proposed charter measure would need to be placed on the ballot 88 days prior to the election, which is scheduled for March 5, 2013. Due to time constraints, many feel that it is not possible or considered feasible to pursue the charter commission approach for the 2013 municipal election, and that it might have to wait until the March 2015 La Mirada City Council Election. City Attorney Markman said that charter cities may have an economic advantage because they can offer financial incentives for development, may modify rules on the bidding process of projects, and can choose to not require payment of prevailing wage on private development projects. City Manager Tom Robinson said La Mirada “may be at a competitive disadvantage to neighboring charter cities in the future because they can offer incentives La Mirada can’t offer..

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. FLOWERS’ RETURN TO ARTESIA “BITTERSWEET”, NEW TEAM EASES PAST PIONEERS WEEK TWO FOOTBALL By Loren Kopff lorenkopff@aol.com

I

t had been about five years since Aaron Flowers set foot at Atkins Stadium, the site of his Artesia High playing days from 1990-1992. Last Friday night, he returned to the same field where, as a quarterback for the Pioneers, he threw for 8,873 during his high school career with his father, Norm, the head coach. But this time, Flowers was on the opposite sideline as the second-year head coach of San Juan Hills and watched his Stallions pull away from the Pioneers in the second half in a 38-13 victory. Flowers, who threw for 3,954 yards as a junior in 1991 and went on to toss 79 touchdowns in his 33-game career, had mixed feelings about the victory. “It’s bittersweet because I’m glad that we played well enough to win but obviously I want the best for [Artesia] and [its] program as well,” Flowers said. Flowers is also among the Top 10 in the California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section record books with 13 straight completions, which he accomplished against Norwalk in 1991, and seven touchdowns in a game, which occurred against Gahr in 1992. “Aaron is a competitor like anybody else,” said Artesia head coach Joe Veach. “He wanted to win this game. I think he obviously wants to see our program do well and I talk to him about it all the time.”

Veach admitted that it was a different feeling and joked that he wondered if Flowers knew what signals Veach was sending his players. The Pioneers took a 6-0 lead following a time consuming drive that was kept alive when the Stallions were assessed a roughing the punter penalty deep in Artesia territory. With 5:10 elapsed in the game, senior quarterback Francisco Galan connected with junior wide receiver Tytus Simmons for a 25-yard score. San Juan Hills bounced back and took a 7-6 lead when Brad Kremer scored from a yard out. The possible turning point of the game came when Galan had a pass tipped, which landed in the hands of Brennan Walsh who returned it 21 yards to the house to make it 14-6 with 1:56 left in the first quarter. Galan struggled in the quarter, going for of 10 for 37 yards but fared much better in the second quarter when he went seven of 11 for 38 yards. But Galan was also the victim of several dropped passes which drew the ire of Veach. “The drops are drive-killers because on second and eight, we drop a six-yard hitch and that’s a big difference between third and eight and third and two,” Veach said. “We had a lot of drops that were drive-killers. We had a couple of penalties that were bad. That’s the third week in a row that we had a personal foul that killed a drive. That’s just

mental, stupid stuff that we do that we have to stop.” The Stallions scored their third touchdown midway through the second quarter but Artesia (1-2) trimmed its deficit with 5:27 remaining in the half as sophomore running back Christian Rodriguez swept around the left side and matriculated 53 yards for his second rushing touchdown in as many games, the other one going for 60 yards. Rodriguez, a freshman sensation towards the end of last season, led the Pioneers with 93 yards on six carries. He also caught seven passes for 35 yards. “We’re just trying to find different ways to get him the football all the time,” Veach said. “Whether we’re snapping to him, handing it to him or throwing to him…he’s electric with the football. There’s no doubt about it.” The Stallions put the game away in the third quarter with two touchdowns in less than a minute. In between those two scores was a fumble at the Artesia 35-yard line. It was the second fumble of the third quarter. Galan finished the game 18 of 37 for 128 yards and had at least nine balls that were either dropped or tipped. Galan also picked up 55 yards on 10 carries. “First of all, they have good coaches and they’re doing the right things,” Flowers said. “They did some things to us tonight that caused us some fits. Ultimately, they

have good players too and it’s just a matter of them sticking to the plan and just keep plugging away.” Flowers is hoping to do something his father did from 2003-2007. Norm Flowers, in his second stint with the Pioneers, replaced Robert Boyd three games into the 2003 season and although the team went 1-9 that year, he guided Artesia to three straight playoff trips after that. San Juan Hills went 0-10 last season but is now 3-0. “I haven’t done anything with this program,” Aaron Flowers said. “Our kids, just from day one after the season ended last year, set goals for themselves and they hit those goals and they’ve been working their butts off. This is what ends up happening.” Artesia now gets set to visit Gahr tonight with the Gladiators hoping to win the coveted Milk Barrel that goes to the winner of the ABC School District. Gahr has been the kings of the district three years in a row and five of the last six. “They have a philosophy on offense and they stick to it,” Veach said. “They’re going to throw the ball all over the place and get it to their athletes. That’s what they do. It’s tough to stop. They have great athletes over there. They lost two good ones from last year’s team but they still have five guys who are on the field at all times that can go and are threats every time they touch the football.”

Enewally Returns to Gahr’s Lineup, Helps Gladiators Rout Cerritos Again WEEK TWO FOOTBALL By Loren Kopff lorenkopff@aol.com

D

espite a very brief sluggish start, Gahr senior wide receiver Patrick Enewally bounced back and had a near perfect season debut. Returning from a recent trip to Africa, Enewally caught four passes for 84 yards and scored three times as Gahr blasted city rival Cerritos 53-0 last Thursday night for its eighth straight victory over the Dons. Enewally caught touchdown passes of 26 and 32 yards respectively from senior Caleb Baumann in a span of 2:48 in the first quarter. He would score his third touchdown, this one of 20 yards, on the second play of the second quarter to increase the score to 26-0. “I was pretty anxious,” Enewally said. “If feels good to finally be back and get all of the nerves out. After all of that waiting,

I felt bad [that I missed the first two games] but I got all of the jitters out.” With representatives from Boise State University on the Gahr sidelines to take a look at Enewally, he caught the first pass of the game for six yards. Other than a 34-yard pitch to senior running back Alex Kline, Baumann struggled on the opening drive, throwing three incomplete passes and an interception to senior defensive back Brandon Choung in the end zone. That would be the lone highlight for the Dons as Gahr (2-1) would score on its next seven drives, six of them lasting under 52 seconds. Kline’s 10-yard run late in the first quarter would increase the score to 20-0 and he would add an eight-yard score three minutes into the second quarter to make it a 33-0 contest. “The first play I started out slow,” Enewally said. “I knew I should have taken it for a touchdown. I knew I had to pick [my game] up.” “We came out flat,” said Gahr head coach Greg Marshall. “We knew we were a better team.”

The first half’s scoring would conclude with a three-yard run from Baumann and a 22-yard pass from Baumann to junior wide receiver Christian Pabico. But just as explosive as Gahr’s offense was, the defense was even better. Gahr forced Cerritos to punt six times in the first half, hold the Dons on downs and recovered a first quarter fumble. The new look Cerritos offense, which now features the double wing set, was held to three yards on 28 plays in the first half. Cerritos didn’t get a first down until the last drive of the half and got as far as its own 42-yard line. The second half was played under the running clock and the Dons had their best drive of the game, picking up 14 yards on seven plays but could only move from its own 27-yard line to its own 43-yard line. After a Cerritos punt, Kline picked up 59 yards on his fifth and final carry of the game. That was followed by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Baumann to sophomore wide receiver William Latham. Valley Christian Looking for Respect After Knocking Off Two-Time Defending Champions By Loren Kopff lorenkopff@aol.com

DOWNEY- If the Valley Christian girls volleyball team didn’t get much attention in the first couple of weeks of the regular season, maybe now people will start to notice the 2012 Lady Crusaders. Backed by strong performances from senior opposite hitter Morgan Haner, senior outside hitter Alyx Henry and junior middle blocker Amanda Chamberlain, among others, the visiting Lady Crusaders took care of Downey 25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 26-24 this past Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings won back to back California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division II-A championships but were moved up to Division II-AA in the offseason. Entering this past week, the Vikings were ranked second in the division while V.C. wasn’t ranked in the Division II-A top 10 poll, nor ranked in another publication’s area poll. “I think it legitimizes a little of what I [mentioned] three weeks ago,” said V.C. head coach Brett Rinks. “I think knocking off Downey at their place, Cerritos at their place and Mayfair at ours…that’s a huge statement, especially in Division II, that we’re here to play this year.” V.C. stunned the home crowd in the first set when senior setter Allyson DeKruyf served five straight points as her team opened up a 6-0 lead. The lead would balloon to 15-4 and 17-6 before the Vikings settled down and from the serving of Rachel Rodriguez, were able to cut the V.C. lead to three points at 17-14. But Henry propelled her team down the stretch with three kills in the final moments of the first set along with a kill and block from Chamberlain. “Downey is a phenomenal team and they have a lot more weapons than I remember that were coming back this year,” Rinks said. “I was little shocked to see

UPHILL BATTLE

Continued from page 12 Chapel, finished the night with 16 of 26 for 300 yards including a perfect seven of seven performance for 140 yards in the second quarter. “He’s still not throwing the ball soon enough,” Marshall said. “He’s holding it a little bit longer. But, he’s not turning it over. He’s throwing it to the right guy but

that, but at the same time I think we came out stronger than them at the beginning, and faster. That’s how we got our lead at 17-6. But then Downey woke up. Downey is a great team and they’re not just going to lie down and give us the whole game.” The second set was much closer all the way through with Henry adding four more kills but got help from Haner (three kills, two aces) and junior outside hitter Maggie Streelman (four kills, two aces, one block). But the tide shifted in Downey’s favor in the third set as its prized player, Joy Miley, began to heat up. Held to seven kills in the first two sets, Miley erupted for six in the third set including one that forced a side out to make the score 21-19. From there, Kimberly Schnars served the final four points of the set. Both teams traded points in the fourth set with no one leading by more than four points when Downey held a 20-16 advantage. Again, with Henry not as effective as she was in the first two sets, Miley continued to get stronger and finished with a match-high 22 kills. But when Miley served long, it gave new life to the Lady Crusaders and a kill from Henry plus an ace from DeKruyf made it 20-19. Another kill from Henry and her two aces put V.C. in front and shortly after that, an ace from senior libero Cayla Palmer put the Lady Crusaders at match point. A kill from Schnars and an ace from Rodriguez tied the set but the Vikings were called for a net violation. That gave the serve to Haner and she ended the match with her third ace, first since the

second set. “I think part of our surprise we gave them was we ran a very fast offense in the first two games and that was a lot of Alyx’ success,” Rinks said. “She runs a very fast go-ball and beats the block, and did today in the first two games. They started rotating the block around a lot and rearranging where Joy was blocking at and I think that threw us off a little bit [later in the match].” Henry led the Lady Crusaders with 18 kills while Chamberlain added 11 kills, Haner nine kills and Streelman eight kills. V.C. also got a quiet but effective performance from senior middle blocker Cierra Trudeau, who had five kills but most of them were tips that confused the Downey defense. “Cierra has made a phenomenal improvement,” Rinks said. “She’s gotten a lot smarter. She’s still undersized in the middle, maybe in our division. But at the same time, she’s learned to read the block well and either tip around or roll around or hit around.” V.C., off to its second 3-0 start in three seasons, will participate in the Otay Ranch Tournament on Saturday and visit Warren on Tuesday. Its next home match is Thursday against St. Joseph. “It’s always the hope of a coach that coming out of summer, we’re ready,” Rinks said. “We’ve had one of the best summers I’ve ever had coaching at Valley Christian and I was hopeful. But at the same time, I don’t want to be too cocky and say we had a great summer and we’re going to do well. I think after this 4-0 run, if you count the Cerritos scrimmage, we’re on a good roll.”

not soon enough.” Latham caught four passes for 56 yards while Kline racked up 119 yards on the ground. Cerritos was led by senior running back Eric Hall, who gained 16 yards on 10 carries. Since the Dons last defeated the Gladiators in 2004, a 6-0 decision, they have been outscored 343-20 by their city rivals. Before Gahr’s recent dominance, it was Cerritos which owned the city, winning six straight games from 1999-2004 and outscoring the Gladiators 192-76. “Yes, it’s still a rivalry because they’re

down the street and they’re still in the [ABC Unified School] district,” Enewally said. “Even though we’re obviously better than them, we still have to come night in and night out and do our job.” “We don’t get that feeling very often,” Marshall said of the slow start. “Most of the time in league we’re good. We have to give it everything we’ve got every game or else we’re going to lose.” Gahr will host Artesia tonight while Cerritos looks for its first win of the season when it travels to Ocean View.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
