By Brian Hews The annual La Mirada Relay for Life was a huge success with more than 900 participants raising over $83,000 to fight cancer and contribute money to research. Original goals set by event leaders was 400 participants and $60,000, “We exceeded our most wildest estimates”, said Randy Hebron, who was also the top fundraiser earning over $2,300. More than 1,500 additional people showed up for the event, clogging lines around the twelve food trucks that showed up to help feed the participants. The staff at Home Depot con-

Citizen Task Force Reviews City Infrastructure Needs

Addressing La Mirada’s aging infrastructure and the nearly $200-million needed to complete the improvements was discussed by the Citizen Task Force on City Finances and Operations at its third meeting on April 30. The City is currently facing the challenge of replacing many infrastructure items that have been in place for over 50 years. At the same time, there is no available funding to complete the improvements. Funding has diminished

in recent years as state and federal governments have reduced their support of local government. The State’s grab of more than $50 million in Redevelopment Agency funds has compounded the issue. “La Mirada faces the challenge of funding nearly $200-million of infrastructure improvements in future years,” says City Manager Tom Robinson. “La Mirada needs locally-controlled funds

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Victims Bureau have arrested Taylor Welch, a 22 year old resident of La Mirada for posTaylor Welch sible felony lewd act on a minor child. In a statement to the media on Wednesday from LASD officials, detectives began the investigation on April 24, when notified by school officials about possible inappropriate contact between the teacher and the student. Sheriff’s investigators immediately began their investigation, which led to the suspect being relieved from his teaching duties by the school. Investigators have learned that the suspect, Welch, a substitute teacher

since September 2011, has only taught at Hutchinson Middle School in La Mirada. He met the 13-year old female victim in his classroom. He allegedly later found the her on Facebook in December, 2011. A friendship developed, allegedly leading to the unlawful exchange of sexually graphic photographs, live video feed and sexting messages between Welch and the child. Inappropriate personal contact also occurred in the classroom after class, said law enforcement. Welch was arrested Tuesday morning for felony Lewd Acts Upon a Child, 288(a) P.C. and Distributing Obscene Material to a Minor, 288.2 P.C. and is being held on $140,000.00 bail. Authorities were made aware of the situation when the victim showed photographs of the suspect, which were stored on her cell phone, to a friend. This led to a parent reporting the matter to school authorities who notified the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Residential burglaries increased from three to five last week. Two of the homes were entered via unlocked doors/windows, and three had sliding glass doors pried open. Jewelry was the only reported loss. The 2012 weekly average in residential burglaries is now 4.2. We remind residents to make an “exit check” each time they leave the home. Make sure that all doors and windows are secured, even if the weather is warm. Don’t present an opportunity for a burglar to enter your home with ease. When you return, you can “air out” the residence in a short period of time. This is a much safer practice than finding valuable property stolen when you get back. There were two “other structure”/ commercial burglaries investigated last week. A fitness center locker was burglarized where cell phones, a wallet, and ID were taken. A detached garage was entered through an unlocked door and stereo, bicycle, and GPS units were stolen. The 2012 weekly average in “other structure”/commercial burglaries is 1.3. Vehicle burglaries increased from 10 to 19 last week. Numerous reports were taken in the condo complex in the northeastern section of the City. Highvolume commercial parking lots were involved in 18. SUVs were involved in 10. Backpacks, cameras, cell phones, books, purses, wallets, clothes, cash, credit cards, and third-row seats (from SUVs) were reported stolen. The 2012 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 7.2. Think twice about the property you leave in your vehicle, and especially an SUV. If it is valuable and important to you, consider leaving it at home or taking it with you when you exit the vehicle. Valuable items left within the passenger compartment make it just too easy for the thief. Vehicle thefts remained at two last week, both of which occurred in highvolume commercial parking lots. A Honda and an SUV were stolen. The 2012 weekly average in vehicle thefts is now 4.1. There was no information to suggest that any of these vehicles were equipped with any type of anti-theft device. While transportation is a frequent cause of vehicle thefts, Hondas and Toyotas are often taken for parts. Consider a steering wheel locking device that serves as a good visual deterrent.

The Older American Nominee of Norwalk Gives Light, Inspiration to the Community By Rico Dizon

Randy Economy Photo Alberta Luna, 80, was recognized Tuesday by the Norwalk City Council for being the "Older American Nominee” for the City of Norwalk for the year 2012.

f you see an elderly lady making the rounds at Norwalk Certified Farmers Market she is not actually shopping for something to bring home. She is in fact making sure that the vegetables, fruits and flowers that the vendors cater to the public are in season. This, she performs to a T as a volunteer-inspector in this weekly event at Norwalk. And mind you, her track record in volunteerism will put to shame individuals 50 years her junior. Her name is Alberta Luna, 80, and she is the Older American Nominee for the City of Norwalk for the year 2012. Endorsed by the Norwalk Senior Commission, Luna was formally recognized and presented with a plaque of appreciation for her outstanding contribution in volunteerism by City Mayor Cheri Kelley and her fellow councilmembers at the council meeting on May 1, amid thundering applause from the audience and city officials present. She is a 55-year resident in the City and her track record in building a family is equally amazing: six children, 14 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. In conjunction with the Older American Month first declared by President John Kennedy in May 1963 to call attention to the senior citizens in the country which is more than 34 million to date, Luna is one of several other nominees in the cities of Los Angeles County Fourth District who will be honored with a luncheon to be hosted by District Supervisor Don Knabe in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Commission for Older Adults on May 30, 2012 at the Kenneth Hanh Hall of Administration near downtown LA. Luna’s shining record as a volunteer, in addition to the above, spans 10 to 15 years and includes the following: helps at the Information Desk at the City of Norwalk Courthouse; assists in ushering during cadets graduation rites for the Norwalk Sheriff Department; ushers every Sunday at St Linus Church in Norwalk; active member, Golden Age Club and Alondra Senior Club; works in voting polls in the City of Norwalk and participates in the City’s annual Angel Tree Project. The Older American Nominee for the City of Norwalk was first recommended by her friend Esther Alejandro, said Norwalk Social Services Manager Veronica Garcia. She’s also beginning to look at some of the candidates running for election in the June primary,. I expect she will march in here anytime and want to know more about the candidates and why they are running for office. My Friend from Fruitcake, Florida looked at me. “Hmmm,” he replied. The total cost is about $49,000. The principal told me she has discussed the finances with the parents and they are determined, if necessary, to pay the balance out of their own pockets. They’re seeking additional donations, but time is running out. The trip is scheduled for June 25-29.” “You know,” he said, “With the economy being what it is, that’s a lot of money.” “My understanding,” I said, “is the trip has been in the making for the past year. I believe everyone felt them money would be raised in that time.” “Well, he said, “I wish them luck.” With that he got up from his chair and turning to face me, said, “Tell VAL LYNDER I said hello.”

Though this concept can be seen as unconscionable by many poverty right advocates we must also take into account the actions of the local government that is entrusted with protecting its residents. Most pro-gentrification municipalities would not designate valuable resources to educate their residents and provide programs that not only enrich their residents’ lives but help them achieve their full potential. Is not the job of a responsible city government to work tirelessly towards providing their residents a community with high property values where every resident can unequivocally be described as a member of the middle class? Or do we want a poverty stricken populous that lacks the intellect to make responsible decisions thus falling prey to the fallacies and empty promises of ego driven, power hungry bullies. Mr. Bruce sees Hawaiian Gardens’ residents as a flock of the sheep that need to be led as he sees fit. While the city council majority led by Mayor Gomez see residents as unique individuals who are intelligent and hardworking that want to make their community a better place. Hawaiian Gardens is a city that wants to improve the lives of its residents and believes in collective achievements. Keep in mind that our Mayor cannot be considered a member of the privileged class. Mayor Gomez is the son of a farm worker who raised his family while running a small pool cleaning business. Mike Gomez understands the daily struggles of the common worker. He would never displace low-income families, because after all he was once one of them. With a mayor who understands what it feels like to struggle financially and rise above adversity how can anyone accuse his city government of ruthless gentrification? Mr. Bruce accuses the Los Cerritos Community News of printing lies and advocating a secret agenda. I have been a weekly subscriber of the Los Cerritos Community News for over 2 years and read their online and print editions daily. I am also a loyal reader the Los Angeles Times, Long Beach Press Telegram, and Wall Street Journal and numerous other publications. I can confidently say that Los Cerritos Community News is one of most unbiased and balanced. Though they make editorial considerations about what stories to print and pursue that I sometimes disagree with, I can always count on impartial and unprejudiced reporting. Excluding the editorial section, I have nev-

er read an article in the Los Cerritos News that spins the issues or advocates a certain agenda. I challenge Mr. Bruce to prove me wrong and show me such an article. For Mr. Bruce to accuse the Los Cerritos News of publishing lies is preposterous and is evidence that he does not read the Community News or any other reputable periodical. It is clear that Mr. Bruce only consider news outlets that portray him in a positive light as the ones that are fair and balanced. I guess he’s still looking for that newspaper. Best of Luck to him! Mr. Bruce accuses Hawaiian Gardens’ city employees of being corrupt and lazy. Hawaiian Gardens’ city employees are some of the hardest working government employees I have interacted with. From managerial/supervisory staff to the common but very important maintenance worker, I have yet to encounter a city employee who does not take their job seriously and understands the important role they play in making Hawaiian Gardens a strong and vibrant community. Each department understands their role and makes every effort to provide the best service they can. One of those outstanding departments is the City Clerk’s office managed by city clerk Sue Underwood and assistant city clerk Lucy Colombo. Mrs. Underwood and Mrs. Colombo have always provided me and others with knowledgeable and timely service and even though we have had our disagreements in the past I know that I can trust them to make competent and judicious decisions. I have witnessed them refuse Christmas presents from well-intentioned seniors in our community because they thought it would be inappropriate in their capacity. They have done and continue to do their jobs with the highest moral character and any accusation of impropriety can only be met with justifiable skepticism. I can categorically fill a book with all the reasons why Mr. Bruce’s arguments and discourse are wrong, unsubstantiated or lack irrefutable evidence. However, one cannot waste such precious time on such a trifle and unimportant bully like Barry Bruce. There is only one thing I want Hawaiian Gardens’ residents to consider. Are you animals to be led by Barry Bruce to the slaughter? Or are you a unique individual who thinks for themselves and act according to your own conscious and moral character. Barry Bruce: Our Lord & Savior ??? Like a breath of fresh of air, it is refreshing to see the Hawaiian Gardens City Council take appropriate action against an out-of-control member of city government. Hawaiian Gardens has been inundated with arguments from both sides, for and against censuring Mr. Bruce. Yet, we have not been able to pull back the curtain and thoroughly examine Mr. Bruce’s claims of corruption and municipal malfeasance. Mr. Bruce is a master of using fallacies and the art of verbal illusion to beguile the public. His bombastic approach to problem solving is testament to his megalomaniacal tendencies. It is time to pull back that curtain and take a look at how his statements are in fact the words of a depraved mind that through seeking absolute, unquestionable, and unchecked power has lost his way from the higher goal of making his community a better place. Mr. Bruce stated that he is against gentrification. Gentrification defined: is the buying and renovation of houses and stores in deteriorated urban neighborhoods by upper- or middle-income families or individuals, thus improving property values but often displacing low-income families and

Carver Academy Principal, Deborah Berlyn, says that completing the application itself took a lot of time. “It was a real group effort,” Berlyn remembers. “Our teachers and staff put in a lot of time making sure our classrooms, curriculum and coursework were accurately depicted on the application.” After the initial application was submitted in November, schools then had to wait for the committees to contact them. The CDE team

reviews every application for accuracy, to confirm most recent test scores and standards before advising schools if they have passed the initial evaluation. Once the schools are notified of the evaluation, the CDE sends committee members to each school for a site evaluation. During the visit, the CDE committee establishes first hand that the information provided in the application is what actually takes place at that school site. At Carver Academy, the students were advised that visitors would be in the classrooms to observe. Some the students were ambassadors for their classroom, eager to show the committee members their daily routine and the work they have completed. Others participated by presenting projects they created for the science fair, and others showed off the skills they learned in their special interest cluster classes. Committee members com-

mented that they were impressed with the diversity at the school and with how genuine and enthusiastic the students were about their accomplishments. While everyone agreed that the visit appeared to successfully confirm all of the important items in the application, there was still some nervous tension waiting to hear if the school would receive the award. On March 29th, the CDE contacted each school and the media with the results. The principals of each of the award winning schools will attend an official awards ceremony in May. Principal Berlyn and the teachers at Carver Academy agree that they would continue doing everything they in serving their students regardless of the extra honors. Earning the California Distinguished School Award is a long process, but it is well worth the effort.

Cerritos Council Honors Gahr High Teacher

A Proclamation of Recognition was presented to Gahr High School social science teacher Patrick Gordon by Mayor Jim Edwards in behalf of the city council at its Apr. 23 meeting. Gordon was recipient of the James Escalante AP Award by the Western Regional Office of the College Board. The award was presented to him at the College Board Western Regional Forum in Las Vegas Feb. 27. The awards was established in 2011 to recognize an individual whose contributions have demonstrated passion, dedication and knowledge to help students in the Western Region succeeded in and have access to Advanced Placement classes. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR La Mirada Lamplighter a Bad Idea Dear Editor: I want to go on the record. I think La Mirada having a weekly newspaper that reaches every home in La Mirada is a good thing. But MY opinion is that when a paper has "La Mirada" in the title and the articles and advertisers are mostly about other city's news or promoting people to go to businesses outside of La Mirada' tax base that is not such a good thing. But I can understand it's a necessary evil when you are first getting started. But, it has been 14 weeks. I think an 8 pager with just LM news and advertisers would be better. It's my opinion that resurrecting the LM Lamplighter was a bad idea. I know you keep referencing Morgan every chance you get, and Dick Hurley is a hero of mine. But at the end of the day (respectfully) she is a daughter of the main employee of the Lamplighter. Mr. Hurley didn't own the rights to the name, but publisher Fred Olson did until he sold it. Again this is only my opinion. Now of course I could write an opinion titled "La Mirada Lamplighter a Trojan Horse for more Cerritos Sales Tax" And then to write a letter to the city council demanding that every board member of the LM Chamber resign was just over the top. LM Chamber Bully Tactics Dear Editor:

Mirada in 2003. I joined the Chamber of commerce shortly thereafter to support the community. The downturn in the economy curtailed my ability to continue that support and 2 years ago I did not renew my membership. Demian Ross contacted me and explained that the membership contract demanded a 90 day notice before withdrawing and threatened a small claims action against my company. My joining of this chamber predated Mr. Ross's tenure and in response I asked for a copy of the supposed contract that he claimed I was bound by. A no quit contract seems to be the vehicle Mr. Ross uses to maintain membership and by association must be endorsed by chamber leadership. Any fool who would submit themselves to a no quit contract must evaluate their customers as equal fools. I view a chamber membership as an incentive to shop elsewhere. Name on file Sent in by email

These costs are in 2012 dollars and are expected to grow over time. Another $126,932,899 in costs was also identified for replacing privately owned boundary block walls along major and secondary streets, undergrounding overhead utilities at busy intersections, and adding streetlights. These items are not currently owned by the City, but they significantly impact property values and the community environment. The Task Force is reviewing the City’s finances and operations, developing alternatives for funding the City’s infrastructure and operational needs, and identifying ways for ensuring local control of local revenues. The Task Force will submit their findings and recommendations to the City Council in June. Continued from page 1 purchasing and developing the property, “we hope to begin grading by July, and have model homes open for viewing by January of next year.” Bounded by Alondra Boulevard on the south, Escalona Road on the west, Dalmatian Avenue on the east, and homes along the north, the new neighborhood is proposed to be a closed-gate community, with a private vehicular entrance and three controlled pedestrian access gates. The City of La Mirada Redevelopment Agency (RDA) has acquired 10 of 11 parcels on the property. The execution of a purchase agreement for the remaining parcel (previous Arco gas station), is still under negotiation. The Whittier Daily News is reporting the city stands to lose at least $7 million on the deal-paying $12.5 million to purchase the property and receiving only about $5.7 million from Brandywine. Although other shopping centers in the city seem to fall into a similar category, in March 2004, then city manager Andrea Travis descibed the center as “blighted”, and the city began the process of demolishing the site, with the intent to ultimately purchase it and develop single family homes. According to the recent report from the city’s Community Development Department, the change was necessitated by the condition of the center, along with “poor tenant retention and an increase in vacancies leading

to loitering, vandalism and public safety concerns. The overall condition of the center negatively impacted the aesthetics of the City” In 2005, the decline of the housing market led to a failed attempt to develop the property. t seemed like yesterday when Nichole Maddox slammed a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning against host Thousand Oaks to send the Cerritos softball team into the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division II finals for the third straight season. But that happened on May 30, 2000. And it seemed like yesterday when Jessica van der Linden was fighting off a pulled rib cage injury to pitch brilliantly against Corona in the championship game, giving up three hits and striking out seven as the Lady Dons won their second straight title, a 4-1 decision. But that occurred on June 3, 2000. While Cerritos has aspirations of another CIF title, it is very much in the running for its first outright Suburban League crown since that historic 2000 season when the team went 31-2. Cerritos, the seventh ranked team in the Division II top 10 poll, will host 10th ranked La Mirada on Tuesday and wrap up the regular season at La Mirada on Thursday with the league title at stake. Cerritos has not swept the Matadores since, you guessed it, 2000. The Lady Dons have also not won on La Mirada’s field since that same season. Cerritos took a week off from league action this past week while Mayfair and La Mirada were facing each other. Entering this past week, La Mirada was 8-0 in the circuit followed by Cerritos (9-1) and Mayfair (7-1). The Lady Dons, who were 17-3 overall following a sweep of Norwalk last week and a victory over Rancho Alamitos in the Loara Tournament last Saturday, had a doubleheader against St. Joseph this past Wednesday.

ALL STATISTICS ARE REGULAR SEASON ONLY “For us, it’s a plus because we were able to schedule some later games, and then we couldn’t have gotten any better with the tournament being rained out and pushed back one week,” said Cerritos head coach Bob Medina. “Always on an off week, it’s very easy to lose focus or concentration. But we have a lot of games in between. No matter what, we have third place [at least], so we’re good. We just want to be able to be ready. We want to play competitive softball.” The 2000 and 2012 teams are somewhat similar, especially in the talent department, but there are several disparities. The one that stands out immediately is in the hitting department where the 2000 Lady Dons batted only .230 in the regular season. However, that team was built around stellar pitching, highlighted by Jessica van der Linden, who had an earned run average of 0.17 in the regular season and struck out 293 batters. She also led the team with a .379 batting average. Offensively, Cerritos was doing it with the small ball as it had 46 sacrifices and scored in double figures only twice. It was involved in 10 one-run games and eight two-run games. This season’s squad is ripping the cover off the ball thus far to the tune of a .390 average as 14 of the 17 players are batting at least .320. Three games have been decided by one run and the team has reached at least 10 runs nine times. This season’s team is built around youth with seven freshmen, along with four seniors while the championship team had nine seniors and no freshmen. “Almost every single one of them, I know who they are,” Medina said of the 2000 team. “I have a lot of respect for them. Their names are still up on the wall inside our storage bin and I don’t plan on ever

taking it down. To the community, they brought a whole bunch of good things and good softball competitiveness. They dedicated their time to represent the school. I do remember it well.” While Medina says the strength this year has been with the hitting, the pitching duo of junior Kaylilani Minami, last season’s league and Los Cerritos Community News All-Area Pitcher of the Year, and freshman Jennifer Iseri have combined to win 15 games and fan 142 batters. While their combined three shutouts doesn’t compare to the 17 that were thrown in 2000, those two alone are just as valuable as van der Linden was. “If I didn’t have a pitcher, we would probably not do as well as we are,” Medina said. “But I believe the strength is a combination of things. I think right now I could say hitting because we really focus on it all the time. People know that and we put a lot of numbers on the board. If we’re down by five, we’ll still probably come back and win. We have the opportunity if the innings allow us.” Iseri is picking up where Minami left off last season, posting 11 victories in 13 decisions with an ERA of 1.78. “Every year I see her maturing,” Medina said. “One day she’s going to be a great leader for this team and this program. With Kaylilani, you can’t say too much. She’s very solid. She keeps everything together. She’s a good mentor for Jen and Jen is learning everyday as a freshman.” The catching duo of freshmen Heather Cameron and Madison Lee sometimes do not play like freshmen. Cameron (.323) has started 14 games behind the dish while Lee (.356) tops the team with 73 at-bats. “Both of them have strong arms and a great ability to block like upperclassmen,”

I put Dri in there [at second]. You have an upperclassman who isn’t going to get flustered and she’s playing a fabulous defense. She knows where to go; she knows what to do. She’s doing her job. She’s doing probably more than we can ask anybody to do. How valuable is Drianna Drulias? Very. We probably would have lost 10 games if she wasn’t there. She’s that important.” Finally, senior and Baylor Universitybound Sarah Smith anchors the outfield in her customary centerfield spot and has been a great tutor to Lee in left field, when she’s not catching, and any of the 10 different players who have started in right field, none with more than five starts. “We’re going to miss her big time,” Medina said. “I wish her all the luck at Baylor. Gahr’s playoff dreams crushed again by Paramount By Loren Kopff

ince 2009, the Gahr and Paramount softball teams have battled for third place and the final automatic playoff berth coming out of the San Gabriel Valley League. This past Monday afternoon, under overcast conditions, the Gladiators once again could not heat up in crunch time when the stakes were at their highest of the season. Host Gahr was limited to five hits and fell to the Pirates 11-1 in a game called after the sixth inning due to the mercy rule. Gahr dropped to 4-15 overall, 2-4 in the league and was all but eliminated from any chances of going to the postseason for the third straight season. Last season, Paramount knocked Gahr out of the playoff picture on the last game of the regular season

at Paramount. In 2010, the Pirates spoiled Gahr’s last home game of the regular season in a 5-0 decision. Three seasons ago, in the second to the last game of the regular season, Gahr ruined Paramount’s party on the Pirates’ field. That would be the last time the Gladiators defeated Paramount. “I think we just lacked communication the whole game,” said senior center fielder Alyssa Nava. “If we would have communicated more, then I think we would have been fine. I think that was the main thing because we hit well. It was just that communication between the infield and outfield was lacking. That caused the errors.” Paramount quickly grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a run scoring single from Victoria Padilla and back to back RBI doubles from Tanayri Novoa and Ashley Jenkins. In the bottom of the first,

The Pirates increased their lead to 5-0 in the next inning on the strength of Monica Caporal’s tworun home run. In the bottom of the second, Gahr had its first three runners reach on a pair or errors and a fielder’s choice but couldn’t score. With Paramount up 6-0, the Gladiators finally got something going in their half of the third when freshman designated player Deidra Genera led off with a single to left field. Two outs later, she came home on a base hit from Purkey. In the next inning, freshman first baseman Celeste Gonzalez and freshman shortstop Deja Portillo each led off with base hits but were left at third and second re-

spectively to end any momentum the hosts may have had. Paramount took advantage of the missed opportunities and scored four times in the fifth and once in the sixth. The four victories so far are the worst in the Gahr program in over 15 seasons but the team figures to pick up at least two more with upcoming games against league cellar-dwellers Dominguez (May 3) and Lynwood. Gahr will make-up a rained out doubleheader with West Torrance on Monday before wrapping up the regular season with a home game against Lynwood on Tuesday and a road game at league-leading Warren on Thursday. “I think sometimes we get down on ourselves and then we don’t pick ourselves up,” Nava said. “We just have to work harder at practice and make sure everybody is together and on the same page.”

alley Christian softball head coach Jim Snyder wanted to get another win and improve his team’s chances of winning an Olympic League title outright. But at the same time, he didn’t want his team to pile up the score against the last place team in the league. Sometimes things just can’t be helped but at the end of the day, the Lady Crusaders will gladly take their 20-2 romp over visiting Los Angeles Baptist in a game called in the middle of the fifth inning this past Tuesday. V.C. improved to 13-8 overall and 6-0 in league action. The 20 runs are the most the program has recorded since a 23-0 rout over Westminster on Mar.

The fourth inning saw 14 come to the plate for V.C. and seven more runs. All nine starters had at least one hit with senior center fielder Ashley Snyder going three for three, senior third baseman Vanessa Sanchez going three for four with three runs scored and three runs batted in and freshman right fielder Madison Wright, the team’s leading hitter, collecting three hits in five at bats along with three runs scored and two RBI. Goff, who had not pitched since these two teams met on Apr. 3 in Mission Hills, scattered seven hits and struck out four. She won for the sixth time in nine decisions. V.C. won for the sixth straight time and eight out of the last nine. It has also defeat-

ed Los Angeles Baptist eight straight times. The Lady Crusaders, looking for their first outright league championship since 2006, will host Whittier Christian on Tuesday that could decide the league title. Whittier Christian was in second place with a 4-1 record after defeating Maranatha this past Tuesday. The regular season ends Thursday with a visit to Village Christian. “Even if you get an occasional weaker opponent, stringing together six wins is quite a challenge,” Jim Snyder said. “We’re not going to turn down any credit for accomplishing that. We wanted to finish above .500 in preseason and we didn’t quite make that goal. But we want to win league outright.”
