Ground Broken for $65 Million Valley View Rail Grade Project

LMGSA 8U Places Second in Temecula Shoot Out Tournament

By Randy Economy With trains lumbering in the background, officials from La Mirada and Santa Fe Springs officially broke ground on a new $65 Million street and rail improvement project that will forever eliminate traffic at the heavily travelled intersection of Valley View Avenue and the BNSF main line track. The area is directly on the border of both cities and on Tuesday [June 19], city council members, state transportation officials and representatives from federal and state elected officials took ceremonial gold shovels and broke ground on the project that has been at least 10 years to develop. “The grade separation project will finally end traffic gridlock,” said Santa

LMGSA’s 8U silver team spent Father’s Day weekend showing off their muscles at the Temecula Shoot Out Tournament. Their dedication and hard work paid off earning the girls 2nd place overall in the ASA 8U Silver Division. The 8U silver team began the tournament by playing Imperial Valley on Friday evening. The girls showed their power by starting the game off with 4 runs scored by Hannah Hernandez, Grace Archuleta, Kara Sands, Allison Conrad, and a power homerun by Salem Flores. Alexa Sams followed Flores’ lead and hit a homerun in the 2nd inning followed by additional runs scored by Alyssa Liskey, and Marissa Leon. Hitters Archuleta, Sands, and Conrad continued the hitting streak with scoring three additional runs. 8U silver held Imperial Valley at zero resulting in a shut out score of 11-0. Saturday the LM 8U team powered through two shut out games against San Marcos: final score 5-0 and Valley Center: final score 6-0. Liskey started the game off against San Marcos with her strong pitching holding the opponent to no runs. Sands came in and continued to hold San Marcos at no runs with some help from her defense. Hernandez made an awesome throw from third to first in the 4th inning. LMGSA 8U Silver moved on to play Valley Center and carry on their shut out streak. The scored was at 0-0 until Sams scored in the 2nd inning putting LM on the board. Archuleta, Conrad, Flores, Sams, and Avrie Padilla added runs to LM’s score in the 3rd inning. During the game 8U Silver team showed their defensive skills with Liskey assisting in 4 outs and Natalie Craig making 2 awesome plays at 2nd base.

La Mirada Community Memoirs to be Published By Tony Aiello When La Miradans Glen Cantrell, Raymond Fernandez, Morgan Hurley and Tony Aiello got together a few years ago to discuss a history book of La Mirada, they had no idea what was to come. Once the word got out, many other La Miradans have joined in and have created a one-of-a-kind book that is now heading north of 100,000 words. “It really is an epic book right now, but we keep adding to it every week”, said Tony Aiello one of the authors. “This La Mirada Community Mem-

oirs sets a brand new standard in city history books where history will be presented factually and chronologically with the memories of our fellow neighbors who lived throughout the City”, said another author Glen Cantrell. The book will contain six decades of cherished-and not so cherished memories-with no holds barred. The authors request that Lamplighter readers send in stories about growing and living in La Mirada and be part of this one of a kind book to be published in 2013. The deadline to submit your memory is September 1st, 2012. Submit your

entries to: lmlamplighter@gmail.com. The Lamplighter will run an occasional short excerpt from the book sent in by the authors to whet your appetite of things to come.

Neff Park A Paradise Neff Park was truly a kid's adventure paradise in the late 50's and early 60's. Chickens, forest-like trees, the main house and best of all, the caretaker's house. A sweet older lady lived there and she would sit and tell stories to us kids about the place. Even better, Neff Park was right next to Rancho School, which was right across the street from my house. I don't recall us kids needing much in the early 60's. We all had a bicycle and some other toys of the days. It was all there and that kind of living looks better to me every day as an adult. We did fairly well, even without any wireless communication devices. We all had one phone, usually in the kitchen of our home. The lucky kids had two phones in their house. All, of course were still on party lines. Two or three homes were hooked into one phone line. That seems scary nowadays. The sounds of La Mirada are what I miss the most. The Santa Fe Trains roaring by Stage Road, and sometimes I can still smell Valley View Farms, it seems. Somehow, I do miss it all because it was a part of Camelot named La Mirada.

Continued from page 1 Fe Springs City Councilman Joseph Serrano. The project was championed, coordinated and funded by both city governments, the California Department of Transportation, BNSF Railway, AMTRAK and US Department of Transportation. La Mirada Mayor Gabe Garcia quipped that residents of both La Mirada and Santa Fe Springs“ will have a lot more time on their hands since they won’t be stopped every five minutes for a train to go by.” The project is part of a $163 Million, 15-mile track extension that will go from Commerce in east Los Angeles over to Fullerton in Orange County. “Santa Fe Springs is fortunate to be able to move forward with the Valley View Avenue grade separation project,” Serrano said. “This important project will not only facilitate better and safer traffic circulation, but will also help revitalize the local economy,” he said. “This grade separation project represents a significant transportation improvement for the cities of Santa Fe Springs and La Mirada,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “The project will also improve the movement of intercity passenger and freight rail.” Instrumental in the coordination of the project is Don Jensen, Director of Public Works for Santa Fe Springs, and Steve Forster, Director of Public Works in La Mirada. ceremony. Once completed, three train tracks will comprise the “Triple Track Project” and will be able to create potential for expanded passenger and commuter rail service through the Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor. Participating in the ceremony was Michael Miles, Caltrans District 7 Director. Miles said that Caltrans will “continue to be here for the entire community and this project will help save lives since vehicles will never cross a track again here on Valley View.” Miles also said that the project will also increase the ability of the rail corridor to accommodate planned increases in the volume of freight and passenger rail services. “As you can tell by the trains that are travelling behind me, more than 130 trains go pass Valley View Avenue every single day. This project will change lives, forever,” he said. Perla Hernandez, Deputy District Director for Congresswoman Grace Napolitano said that “in addition to improving safety and reducing noise, completion of the grade separation will improve local traffic circulation.” Hernandez also pointed out that Caltrans was recently awarded an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grant from the Federal Railroad Administration that “fully funded this segment.” Also participating were staff representatives from California State Senator Ronald Calderon and US Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez. The project will be completed by Fall 2014.
