VOLUME 143
Don’t Be Fooled—These Gadgets Do More Than You Think
VIEW GUIDE At Cook’s Illustrated, we’re all about getting the most mileage out of our
kitchen tools. That’s why we recommend only equipment that can handle our rigorous testing process. It also means that we’re always looking for new, creative ways to use ordinary tools. For example, did you know you can use a corkscrew to safely remove an avocado pit? Or that your salad spinner can help you wash delicate berries without damaging them? This week’s collection highlights these and other seemingly simple tools that have unexpected uses.
Want to learn more clever ways to use your favorite kitchen tools? Our book Kitchen Hacks contains our best tips and tricks from the test kitchen. Inside, you’ll find more than 1,000 ideas for easier cleaning, organizing, entertaining, prepping, and more. It also includes hundreds of our signature illustrations to demonstrate exactly how you can bring these fun solutions to life in your own home.
DON’T MISS THESE GUIDES
Our buying guides contain recommended equipment from our rigorous equipment testings. We post new guides every week, but they’re available for only a limited time. As we often say, we do the testing so you don’t have to.

Muffin tins are good for more than just muffins and cupcakes. We also use them to make single-serve frittatas, hold scoops of ice cream, and serve condiments and garnishes for chili taste-offs, backyard barbecues, and more. Our new winner from OXO beat out the competition with its oversize, easy-to-hold rim and the best baking performance in our lineup.
Just like the tools in this week’s product collection, there’s more than meets the eye in this chocolate cupcake recipe. To up the chocolate flavor, we mixed cocoa with hot coffee and opted for more neutral-tasting vegetable oil instead of butter. Using bread flour in place of all-purpose flour helped make the cupcakes sturdy enough to hold a sweet, chocolaty surprise: a spoonful of ganache in the center of each one.

Turning Your French Press into a Frother
A good-quality French press does more than just produce fullbodied coffee; this multipurpose kitchen tool also works as a frother for times when you’re craving a café-style cappuccino or latte. Simply fill the French press up to one-third full with cold milk.

peak-season produce is through preserving. With the right tools, you can bring this time-honored tradition home, too. While premade canning kits are available to buy, we’ve found that some of the items included aren’t necessary or worth the money. So in this week’s buying guide, we’ve collected the key pieces of equipment you’ll need to make your very own jams, jellies, marmalades, and more.
