_01_ALIEN POTATOES DERIVED FROM ERNST HAECKEL’S STUDIES OF EVOLUTION AND ART FORMS IN NATURE THIS PROJECT FOCUSES PRIMARILY ON THE CREATION OF AN EVOLVED 3-D CREATURE. FLOW AND GROWTH BECAME THE DRIVER BEHIND THE ALIEN POTATO.

_03_[MELT] HIGHTEN UTILIZING A KAPOK FISH STUDIES WERE CONDUCTED FOCUSING ON THE NATURAL GRADATION OF SCALES AND BODY FEATURES. A KAPOK FISH WAS PHOTOGRAPHED FROM SIX ANGLES BASED ON A SIX SIDED CUBE. ONCE IMPOSED THE GRADATION OF PATTERNING WAS “HEIGHTENED” BY SCALE AND DEPTH TO ACHIEVE A BLURRED DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL GRADATION AND THE CUBE. _06_BLIRROR THIS STUDY INVESTIGATED A MIRRORED BLURRING OF MOTION. ROBOTICS WERE UTILIZED TO CREATE SLOW MOTION BLURRING THAT WAS THEN CAPTURED AND OVERLAID OVER DIFFERENT TIME FRAMES. THE OUTCOME WAS A VARIETY OF STILLS THAT FEATURED DIFFERENT EFFECTS THAT WAS PROJECTED BACK INTO 3D VIA THE ANGLES IN WHICH THE STILLS WHERE TAKEN FROM. AN OBJECT WAS THEN RECREATED ON THESE ANGLES WITH THE FEATURED EFFECTS ADDED. 2D IMAGERY WAS THEN CREATED FROM THE 3D OBJECT IN AN ATTEMPT TO CREATE THE INITIAL EFFECTS. _002_ARCHITECTURE 40

_08_RHEOLOGICAL TRANSLATIONS RHEOLOGICAL TRANSLATIONS TAKES CUE FROM THE ARCHITECTURAL TECHNIQUE OF RUSTICATION, USED TO EXPRESS RADICAL MATERIALITY ON THE FACADES AND SURFACES OF BUILDINGS. THE DESIGN PROCESS ADOPTED RESIN CASTING AS PHYSICAL MEDIUM FOR VARIOUS GEOMETRIC AND ROBOTIC OPERATIONS, LEADING UP TO A FULL-SCALE ARCHITECTURAL PROPOSAL FOR A NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM. A RUSTICATED DIGITAL GEOMETRY WAS FIRST GENERATED THROUGH IMAGE HEIGHT-FIELD OPERATION ON AN EXACT PRIMITIVE GEOMETRY (CUBE). IT WAS THEN 3D PRINTED AND USED AS A MOLD FOR ROTATIONAL CASTING OF RESIN. WE BECAME FASCINATED WITH THE DICHOTOMY BETWEEN THE INSIDE AND THE OUTSIDE OF THE ROTATED CAST. THE OUTSIDE FAITHFULLY REPRODUCED THE ORIGINAL 3D PRINTED GEOMETRY WITH ITS TRIANGULATED MESH FACETS, EXTRUSION LAYER STRIATIONS AND MATTE SURFACE. THE INSIDE, ON THE OTHER HAND, BEGAN TO DISTANCE ITSELF FROM THE ORIGINAL GEOMETRY. THE SURFACE BECAME SMOOTH AND SHINY, FULL OF BUBBLES, DRIPS AND OTHER UNEXPECTED AND INEXACT GEOMETRIES THAT BEGAN TO SUGGEST SPATIAL QUALITIES. 6-AXIS ROBOTS WERE IMPLEMENTED TO DO THE ROTATIONAL CASTING FOR MOTION COMPLEXITY AND REPEATABILITY. _10_AFFINITY THIS PLATFORM IS ACCOMPLISHED BY THE COMBINATION OF AN INTENSE ATTENTION TO THE USER’S NEED FOR SPECIFIC SPATIAL DETAIL IN VIRTUAL REALITY AND THE CREATION OF INTERACTIVE HYBRID REALITY WORKSPACES. THESE ENVIRONMENTS ARE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO STIMULATE CREATIVITY AND TRIGGER THE IMAGINATION, WHILE MITIGATING ANY ADVERSE PSYCHOLOGICAL CONDITIONS. EACH USER WILL HAVE ACCESS TO A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT VIRTUAL SPACES THROUGH INTEGRATION WITH THE OCULUS RIFT. SIMULTANEOUSLY, AFFINITY IS BEGINNING TO CHALLENGE THE SEGREGATION OF PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS. IN THIS SEARCH WE HOPE TO FINE NEW TOOLS TO CHALLENGE NOT ONLY THE ARCHITECTURAL STATUS QUO, BUT THROUGH OUR TEAM OF DOCTORS, ENGINEERS AND PHILOSOPHERS WE INTEND TO EXPAND THESE FINDINGS ACROSS DISCIPLINE. OUR CURRENT WORK IN THE ROBOT HOUSE AT SCI-ARC INTENDS TO DO JUST THIS. MAINTAINING OUR ATTENTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL AESTHETICS, WE CONCEIVED OF A SYSTEM THAT ALLOWS FOR AN INFINITE FEEDBACK LOOP THAT CROSSES FROM PHYSICAL TO VIRTUAL AND BACK. HERE, WE ARE CAPABLE OF ENGAGING WITH IDENTICAL VIRTUAL AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTS SIMULTANEOUSLY BY WORKING IN A PHYSICAL DESIGN LAB AND PASSING PHYSICAL OBJECTS AND DATA TO OUR VIRTUAL CLONES FOR TESTING AND SIMULATION, AND CONVERSELY AS WELL. _13_TRA[V]ERSE THIS PROJECT AIMS TO EXPLORE A RECONFIGURABLE CELL (TRA[V]ERSE) THAT WILL HOUSE AN UPLOADED WHOLE BRAIN EMULATION (WBE) PLATFORM CHALLENGING SPATIAL PERCEPTION. THE CELL WILL ACT AS A DRIVER FOR INFINITE POTENTIAL SPACE CONFIGURATIONS THAT WILL BEGIN TO REMAP, REINTERPRET, AND ALTER INFORMATION. TRA[V]ERSE IS AN UNSTABLE, RECONFIGURABLE CAPSULE THAT MANAGES DATA AND BROADCAST INFORMATION IN WAYS WHICH CHALLENGES NOT ONLY THEIR UNDERSTANDING BUT THAT OF THE SPACE AROUND AND WITHIN IT. USING ROBOTIC MOTION AS A WAY TO PRODUCE KALEIDOSCOPIC EFFECTS, THE RECONFIGURABLE FORMS BLUR MERGING OBJECTS IN SPACE. _14_PUFF’D PUFF’D PROTOTYPE EXPLORES PLASTICITY OF COMPOSITE CONSTRUCTION AND THE ROLE OF THE SEAM AND JOINT IN ARCHITECTURE. INSPIRED BY JAPANESE WOOD JOINERY, PUFFY JACKETS AND JET FIGHTER AIRPLANES, PUFF’D PROPOSES A NOVEL CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE FOR FULL SCALE ARCHITECTURE. INSTEAD OF FOLLOWING PARAMETRIC PANELING AND MODULE-BASED LOGICS, PUFF’D EMPLOYS LARGE MONOLITHIC BUILDING COMPONENTS OR SUPER-COMPONENTS SUGGESTING NEW WAYS OF FULL SCALE ASSEMBLY ON SITE. THE PROJECT FOLLOWS UP ON OUR PREVIOUS EXPLORATIONS INCLUDING STUDIES OF SUPER-COMPONENTS, JOINERY, MATERIAL AGENCY, AND ROBOTIC ASSEMBLY. THE PREVIOUS PROTOTYPE USED THE LANGUAGE OF STITCHING AND WOOD JOINERY TO STUDY HOW COMPOSITE TECTONICS WOULD UTILIZE A MEGA-SEAM FOR A SIMPLIFIED ASSEMBLY AND EXPLORED THE ROLE OF REAL AND FAKE SEAMS IN ARCHITECTURAL ASSEMBLAGES. THE CURRENT PROPOSAL SCALES UP AND DEVELOPS AN INFLATABLE COMPOSITE SANDWICH TECHNIQUE TO MINIMIZE WASTE AND EXPLORE NEW FORMAL AND STRUCTURAL POSSIBILITIES. PUFF’D ALTERS THE AESTHETIC OF TRADITIONALLY SEEN AND RECOGNIZED MATERIALITY AND DISPLAYS A STRUCTURAL SYSTEM THAT APPEARS SOFT IN NATURE. UNLIKE CURRENT FACADES OR SHELL SYSTEMS THE INJECTED SURFACE PRESENTS ITSELF AS A SOFT SURFACE NOT RECOGNIZED YET IN ARCHITECTURAL APPLICATIONS. A PRECISE TECTONIC SEAM AND STITCHING PATTERN ENCOURAGE AN INEXACT ARTICULATED SOFT SURFACE TREATMENT. THE FORM OF THE PROTOTYPE IS A FOLDED ENVELOPE WITH HYPERBOLIC SURFACES.
