How would you describe the Shuswap? You could say it’s a place where incredible nature comes to rest in the soul. A singular place beckoning to restless singular soles. A place to ascend towering cliffs, glide across snowy meadows, listen to the whispers of a lush forest, or step inside an inviting café, let go of your hurry, stay awhile, and smile. You could say it’s a place for families, where you can jump into incredibly warm water from the deck of a houseboat or wander along rolling trails. A place where you can golf, then bike, then swim, then dine on fine local fare and enjoy an evening out on the town. You could say it’s a place where you can taste great wines and tour vineyards, explore hidden natural treasures, witness the amazing cycle of the salmon, and watch the clear night sky wheel overhead. A place to revel in culture and community and to create your own stories of simplicity and abundance.

North Shuswap Region South Shuswap Region Sicamous Region

You could say all of this and even more. Or you could simply say it’s a place where you can change into your vacation shoes, put your feet up and do blissfully nothing at all.

During September and October, the quiet banks of the Adams River, 405 km inland from the Pacific Ocean, become the scene of a natural miracle. Each fall, the quiet waters of the 12 km river welcome Sockeye Salmon returning to their home waters to spawn. The fish are completing a journey that takes them far out into the Pacific, then upstream against swift currents and rapids all the way up to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands and back again – traveling over 4,000 kms in their lifetime. Biologists, naturalists, and fishery crews gather to observe, count, and witness the salmon, studying their numbers and health. The Adams River is one of the most important Sockeye Salmon breeding areas in North America – important not only to local ecology, but to the history and culture of the Shuswap. You’ll find the tastes of our home wherever you go – at orchards, gardens, ranches, greenhouses, dairies, markets, and more. WINeries & Breweries

Wine and beer enthusiasts, welcome to paradise! The Shuswap’s award-winning wineries and unique breweries invite you to indulge in exceptional tasting experiences. Like so many Shuswap stories, our wines and beers express the spectacular landscape that surrounds us. Our region is home to seven award-winning wineries and two outstanding breweries – with another on the way. Although the Shuswap can be considered the northern tip of the Okanagan wine-growing region, our climate is cooler than the

southern interior regions of BC and creates exceptional products. Shuswap summers are warm and dry, with long, sunny days and cool nights creating distinctive, flavourful grapes. Winter’s generous snowfall provides plenty of moisture year-round, keeping irrigation needs to a minimum. Each vineyard enjoys a unique microclimate, producing singular flavours that only develop right here. With wineries of outstanding quality established throughout the Shuswap, a tasting tour is a must for visitors seeking to

30 | www.ShuswapTourism.ca

delight all five senses! The Shuswap’s wineries are family- run businesses that produce wines so fine they compete on par with Canadian and international wines. They have perfected a combination of growing techniques and plant selection that enhances the aromas and flavours of their wines. The area’s wines include magnificent Gewürztraminers, Merlots, Ortegas, Rieslings, Siegerrebes, to name a few, which have all won national awards.

All seven wineries have tasting rooms to pour out adventures for your palate. To find out which ones are open during your tour, visit ShuswapWineries.ca, or grab a copy of our Full Circle Farm Tours brochure. The Shuswap region is also home to breweries that pride themselves on using only the finest local and organic ingredients to produce their beers and ales. Crannóg Ales in Sorrento is Canada’s first Certified Organic farmhouse microbrewery, one of only a handful around the world. Crannóg brews unfiltered, unpasteurized ales using only organic ingredients – some of which are grown right on the premises – reflecting the Irish tradition of brewing full-flavoured, complex ales. Stop in on a Friday or Saturday over the summer for a tour and tasting. The Barley Station Brew Pub in Salmon Arm uses exclusive recipes and the finest malted grain from Europe and North America. Visit the Barley Station Brew Pub any day of the week for a sampler of their unique blends – and excellent dining, too! Ask your server which seasonal, limited edition beers are available while you’re there. And keep your eyes peeled for a new brewery and tasting room opening in downtown Salmon Arm this summer! Whether you choose to savour the Shuswap’s wineries and breweries in a day or a week, make sure to plan your tour carefully to maximize your enjoyment. Some wineries have a picnic area or patio, so that you can

bring a snack or a meal to enjoy along with the fabulous wine and stunning scenery. For a complementary experience, visit farms while you make your way around the region, and try creating your own pairings of local food and wine. Keep in mind that some of the Shuswap’s unique wines are produced only in limited quantities and may not be available elsewhere, so if you find yourself swept away by a particular flavour, stock up while you’re here. And to keep your tour worryfree, appoint a designated driver for the trip. You’ll be glad you did!

birding

The Shuswap’s shimmering lakes, rich wetlands, and lush forests don’t just appeal to people – our fine-feathered friends love to perch here too. In fact, our widely varied habitat of rivers, lakes, and wetlands attracts over 300 bird species to the Shuswap – some 63 per cent of all species found in BC. In the spring and fall, the shorelines are a haven for a wide variety of migratory birds. Large numbers of waterfowl and many other birds grace the skies and waterways of the region. Watch Osprey and Blue Herons fishing. Bring your binoculars to look on as Bald Eagles feed their young. Perhaps one of the most enchanting Shuswap experiences to be had is witnessing the ‘walking on water’

dance of the Western Grebe. The Western Grebe has established only two breeding colonies in BC, and one of them is right here in Salmon Arm Bay. Take the family out for a canoe trip to share in the magic up close.

Birding is a wonderful way to learn about our natural surroundings, too. Numerous tree species, wildflower and mushroom varieties flourish in the Shuswap’s temperate zone, while large and small animals thrive in its lush habitats.
