The region stretches from Lee Creek to Seymour Arm and includes the communities of Lee Creek, Scotch Creek, Celista, Magna Bay, Anglemont, St. Ives, and 100 kms of shoreline that has remained almost unaffected by large resort development. Shuswap Lake Provincial Park is located here and is a summer destination for many campers, offering pebble beaches and acres of lake to explore. Paddle, float, swim, or skim the waters of the Shuswap. Get up close and personal with our lakes by canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, SCUBA diving, and stand-up paddle boarding. The Shuswap is a paddler’s paradise, with easily accessible small lakes perfect for an escape on the water – so why not visit a few? You’ll find serene settings at Mara Lake, near Sicamous, and White Lake, close to Salmon Arm. White Lake
SOUTH SHUSWAP
Provincial Park, an oasis near the north end of the lake, features a gravel boat launch and undeveloped camping area. Near Enderby, Mabel Lake and Hidden Lake boast boat launches, camping, and soul-soothing wilderness. The Shuswap River offers a variety of areas for paddle sports from kayaks and canoes to rafts, paddleboards, and tubes. Thrill-seekers can find class 3+ whitewater rapids through the famous Skookumchuck canyon. For a relaxing, scenic float, take a raft through the middle section of the Lower Shuswap River. Be sure to know your put-ins and take-out spots and water levels for a safe trip. To avoid the hassle of bringing your own gear, rent a kayak or paddleboard from one of several rental businesses throughout the Shuswap.

Visitors can view the salmon run from the banks of the Adams River at Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park, where 26 km of trails offer exceptional nature viewing and bird-watching opportunities. And for a truly unique experience, hop aboard Copper Island Diving Ltd.’s pontoon to the beach or river mouth to swim and snorkel with the salmon or take a Segway tour of the trails through the park.

During September and October, the quiet banks of the Adams River, 405 km inland from the Pacific Ocean, become the scene of a natural miracle. Each fall, the quiet waters of the 12 km river welcome Sockeye Salmon returning to their home waters to spawn. The fish are completing a journey that takes them far out into the Pacific, then upstream against swift currents and rapids all the way up to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands and back again – traveling over 4,000 kms in their lifetime. Biologists, naturalists, and fishery crews gather to observe, count, and witness the salmon, studying their numbers and health. The Adams River is one of the most important Sockeye Salmon breeding areas in North America – important not only to local ecology, but to the history and culture of the Shuswap. Salmon have helped to sustain the Secwepemc people for thousands of years. Sockeye Salmon return to the Adams River each year, and

The Shuswap’s shimmering lakes, rich wetlands, and lush forests don’t just appeal to people – our fine-feathered friends love to perch here too. In fact, our widely varied habitat of rivers, lakes, and wetlands attracts over 300 bird species to the Shuswap – some 63 per cent of all species found in BC. In the spring and fall, the shorelines are a haven for a wide variety of migratory birds. Large numbers of waterfowl and many other birds grace the skies and waterways of the region. Watch Osprey and Blue Herons fishing. Bring your binoculars to look on as Bald Eagles feed their young. Perhaps one of the most enchanting Shuswap experiences to be had is witnessing the ‘walking on water’
dance of the Western Grebe. The Western Grebe has established only two breeding colonies in BC, and one of them is right here in Salmon Arm Bay. Take the family out for a canoe trip to share in the magic up close.

Numerous tree species, wildflower and mushroom varieties flourish in the Shuswap’s temperate zone, while large and small animals thrive in its lush habitats. For a delightful winter stroll, strap on snowshoes and explore our exceptional network of trails. Snowshoeing is a great way to experience our magical winter scenery, and the only skill required is the ability to smile!

Love fishing in the summertime? Rediscover it in winter! Many Shuswap lakes freeze over, making them perfect for ice fishing. White Lake, one of the top ten Rainbow Trout fishing lakes in North America, is a great spot to try in winter, so bundle up and drop a line.
Pick up a bag lunch at Blue Canoe Bakery in Salmon Arm on your way out – call ahead to have one prepared. Visit John’s Ski Shack – in a quaint log cabin right at the base of Larch Hills – to rent snowshoes and get expert advice. Explore the trails at Larch Hills! Amazing snowfall and dense forest make for a winter wonderland.
Complement your outdoor adventures with a stay in a cozy chalet. Visit with friends, cook a tasty meal together, and warm up by a blazing fire. Advance bookings are necessary, so give yourself something to look forward to!
