Breaking News—Agenda 2015

Agenda 2015 Our history began in Cologne in July 2001.

A new tradeshow was born: BREAD & BUTTER — unconventional, different, out of thin air, somehow weird. Selected brands, in an old industrial building, the »Dreieckige Rundbau«. This was something new. Some were enthusiastic, others thought we were rather strange. We worked hard but also partied hard. We created a community. Many have good memories of the old days in Cologne. In January 2003, we moved to Berlin, because Cologne didn’t want us. All hard facts spoke contra Berlin: no purchase power, no urban fringe, a blank page. But Berlin instantly fascinated us, with its young and creative people, the Governing Mayor Klaus Wowereit, the art scene, but also the nightlife with its unmatched club scene.

We knew: people will love Berlin and gladly come. We were right, Berlin was a success right from the start. The fashion industry did not want a conventional trade show anymore; Cologne was dead, Berlin set from that day on. And everyone was happy to come to Germany’s new capital. BREAD & BUTTER grew at a spectacular speed.

In 2005 already, we had used up our capacities in the Siemens Kabelwerk in Berlin-Spandau. It was too cramped, too small, too many people — staying there was not possible.

Agenda 2015—Breaking News

Berlin, Barcelona, Berlin... In 2005 we moved to Barcelona. A city full of energy and street life, young and creative, nearly like Berlin, but everything was a lot closer together.

Barcelona became our second home. The venue, breathtaking, was the World Expo grounds from 1929 at the foot of the Montjuic. The historical halls, the Palau, the German Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe — all of them just indescribable. They all came, from Northern and Southern Europe, the Germans, the French and the Italians. We rushed from one visitor record to the next. For four years, Barcelona was »the international fashion meeting point«. In 2009 we went back to Berlin, because this was what the fashion industry wanted. We got

Tempelhof, wow what a location! The historical airport Berlin-Tempelhof, the biggest coherent building in Europe and one of the world’s most famous monuments. And once again we had huge successes. Once again, we had caught the »perfect wave«. Nearly all important brands were there. The fashion world celebrated Berlin. Everyone was happy that we had returned. With the support of the politics we signed a ten years contract [20 seasons] with Berlin for the

use of Tempelhof. I thought it would be good, after years of wanderings, to finally settle down. In these days, our 11th event at Tempelhof is taking place. In the course of the past years, a lot has happened, the strengthening of the vertical systems, the crisis, mainly in Southern Europe, online retail increasingly competes against brick and mortar retail, own stores of the brands, facebook, twitter, etc.

What’s next???

The wish for a real change is in the air. Everywhere in Europe and the US, new bigger and smaller trade shows and trading platforms pop up, everyone is fishing in the same lake in the competition for exhibitors and buyers. You can’t fight off the event organizers’ newsletter flood.

Exhibitors and visitors start questioning the trade show system: too much, too boring, everywhere the same, too stressful, too regional, just not cool anymore — no one wants to spend hours in the cab or shuttle. People start to stay away due to that, they are sick of it.

You get the impression that all buyers are on the road to everywhere, there is downright trade show tourism going on. But the same brands and collections are shown in all fashion cities.

On their hunt for content and ads, the textile trade press writes about every event, regardless of its significance. This leads to further uncertainty.

The peak of perversion is if the same collection is shown in the same city at the same time at different trade shows. Based on the motto: Dear buyer, we will get you one way or the other, somewhere, if not here than there. But the orders are written later and later. Nevertheless, the goods should be in the stores on time for the start of season. It’s the story of chasing your own tail.

I have given answers, tightened our portfolio, open and loud considered including the end consumer, made extra efforts. But this is obviously not enough. The wish for a real change is in the air, I can smell it.

Barcelona, Berlin, Seoul... On 2nd May 2014, we signed the »Memorandum of Understanding for the Implementation of BREAD & BUTTER Seoul Show & Mutual Cooperation« with the Mayor of Seoul. On 12th September 2014, thus in two months, we invite all interested brands to Seoul in order to check the situation there. The Mayor of Seoul, Mr. Won Soon Park, will welcome all of us personally.

A lot of good news, I think. We’re working on the »Grand Slam«, everyone knows what this means. Now we are in Europe’s two best cities, namely Barcelona and Berlin, and in Seoul/ Asia. From the flavours seducing you at the Boqueria to the stunning views of Gaudís works—a visit to Barcelona makes it impossible to keep your mouth closed. Few cities can claim to be forever changing and reinventing themselves as much as the beautiful capital of Catalunya. It is this very fashionable quality that once earned it the nickname »The Madonna of the Cities«. Barcelona honors this reputation by remaining a place of contrasts: a city where modern, vibrant youth roams along medieval streets and roman vestiges. It reminds one of a capricious woman that dons very few clothes to sunbathe at the beach, even less to enjoy the [in]famous nightlife and yet … wakes up early in the morning to wear a business suit like no other. Forever different, forever the same and forever stylish. Comes as no surprise that BREAD & BUTTER couldn’t stay away. Thus we are very excited to pay a visit to our former home and yell : Visca Barcelona!

Berlin Shine as bright as »Goldelse«. Berlins’ Victory Column sits on a hall of pillars. For BREAD&BUTTER the most important pillar is the B&B community. The tradeshow for selected brands will always be held in the most extraordinary and visionary places of the world — but without its crowd it’s not the same. Airport Berlin-Tempelhof is another tremendous pillar where the B&B community celebrated 11 remarkable seasons — and there’s much more history to write here in the future. Let the Airport Berlin-Tempelhof shine in bright summer light!

Oh wonderful city of contradictions, where old and new, fast and slow, work and party, beautiful and ugly, stone and plastic, clean and dirty coexist peacefully most of the time —and when they clash, a tension is created that underlines its peaceful broad streets and beautiful old houses. Berlin, great city of »Berliner Schnauze« where you can say what you think and don’t waste your time on petty small talk, where random encounters with people from all over the world can lead to anything from a beer in the Eckneipe to new business ideas. This city is a city for artists, for creatives, for people who have time to enjoy the good things in life — and you know these are always free! Here, fashion is street, and street is the fashion. Berlin just makes you wear trainers, since high heels only get stuck in its pavement’s many cracks!

If you’re not in, you’re out!

Just as Berlin is the city of reinvention, the history of the Airport Berlin-Tempelhof, this architectural jewel in the centre of Berlin, is a true symbol for reinvention: The old terminal was originally built in 1927 and underwent massive reconstruction in the 1930s. Under the name »Zentralflughafen Tempelhof-Berlin«, it quickly became one of the world’s busiest airports. The building complex was designed to resemble an eagle in flight with semicircular hangars forming the bird’s spread wings, but construction was never finished due to World War II. All German civil aviation was halted on 2 September 1939. In accordance with the Yalta agreements, Airport Tempelhof was turned over to the United States Army on 2 July 1945 by the Soviet Union as part of the American occupation sector of Berlin.

A perfect Match Berlin-Tempelhof True symbol of reinvention

BBBig Times

Berlin Summer

The Airport Berlin-Tempelhof became a symbol of international solidarity as the starting and landing point of the Berlin airlift by the Western Allies. The airlift supplied West Berlin’s starving population from 23rd June to 12th May 1949 with vital basic commodities and food during the blockade by the Sovjet Union that had halted all traffic by land and by water into or out of the western-controlled sectors of Berlin. After air traffic at Airport Tempelhof ceased for good on 30th October 2008 and Tempelhof could be used as an event location, BREAD & BUTTER took this historical chance for returning home in summer 2009.

Airport Berlin-Tempelhof in action

The grounds of the airport impress and inspire exhibitors and visitors alike. The logistic preconditions of the c-shaped complex with its vast airfield and its spacious hangars are a perfect match for the needs of BREAD & BUTTER: The hangars are the ideal backdrop for the brands’ presentations: their concrete floors, faint colours and industrial charm do not distract from the brands’ colourful stand constructions and collections. The airfield with its unparalleled panorama onto the horizon provides perfect conditions for BREAD & BUTTER’s matchless Luna Park: eat, drink and party with an astounding view! Although BREAD & BUTTER has always chosen historic buildings originally designed for completely other purposes than a fashion trade show, the reinvention of the Airport Berlin-Tempelhof as home to the tradeshow for selected brands topped it all.

South Korea never just copies Western styles but puts its own topspin on music, fashion, food and technology. The sidewalks of Seoul are one big fashion show. Both men and women dress to impress and boutiques, starring designs by local designers, flourish to the max. Trendy stores are featuring potpourris of quirky Korean labels desirously snapped up by young urban hipsters. For sure the Seoul Metropolitan Government has already picked up on that prosperous trend and designated Korea’s fashion industry as one of the city’s eight emerging industries to give strong government support and assistance. It’s about time for Europe to create a footprint on the Asian market. It’s time for BREAD&BUTTER SEOUL.
