CONTINUED GROWTH SEES HADDENS TAKE DELIVERY OF NEW MAN TGS. Long term Westar customer Haddens recently took delivery of a new MAN TGS 26.540 to cope with growing demand for the wide range of garden and building supplies the company carries. Haddens was one of the first garden supply companies in Melbourne, established around 65 years ago. The company has experienced significant growth over the past four years under Kevin Unali’s ownership, growing threefold in that short time. Kevin believes their commitment to providing outstanding service is one of the core reasons for this incredible growth. Haddens broad product offering includes the delivery of sand, soil, mulch, compost, toppings, and turf plus many other related products. The customer base is just as diverse, covering landscaping for residential housing, commercial and civil businesses. 02
Now running a fleet of ten trucks including a number of Isuzus, Kevin decided to give the MAN product a go. Set up in a dog and tipper configuration the new truck runs pretty much nonstop twenty four hours, five and a half days a week and operates both locally and interstate. Kevin reports that his drivers particularly love the comfort and ergonomics of the cab and he is looking forward to reaping the benefits of outstanding fuel efficiency – one of MAN’s core attributes. Another reason for choosing MAN was the excellent service he has received from Westar over the years both from the sales and service personnel.

Today that ethos remains, with the company selling a wide range of environmentally friendly and ethically-sourced furniture, clothing and homewares. By working with artisans in developing countries over the years, ISHKA has contributed to the progress and empowerment of international communities in need. Since its first outlet in 1971 the group has now grown to 37 retail locations throughout Victoria, regional New South Wales, the ACT and Tasmania. Goods are still sourced from all over the world in developing areas including Bali, Indonesia, China, India and Columbia. “We’re proud of the fact that we keep a lot of people in these countries employed which they wouldn’t be if we didn’t continue to buy from them. We estimate we keep about 4,500 people employed across the world,” ISHKA’S Logistics and Project Manager Jason Hicks said. The company’s expansion has necessitated the building of a purpose built 4,000 sq metre warehouse in Derrimut. All imported goods are sent here and then distributed up and down the East Coast and regional NSW to the company’s stores via their own company vehicles. Whilst Jason is In charge of this sizeable logistics challenge he is also responsible for new store locations and building management.

The first Isuzu ISHKA purchased was in 2007; a small N Series which eventually clocked up a fairly incredible 750,000 kms before having to be moved on. “I’ve enjoyed the fact that when it comes to purchasing new trucks Westar has always given me good advice. They come up with the perfect solution to my requirements and make sure I’ve got the right truck for the task at hand,” said Jason. ‘We work our trucks hard and the Isuzus are performing well - we haven’t had any problems so far. I bought them for their reliability and expect to get a large mileage out of them before we have to turn them over,” Jason went on to say. Today the company has 7 Isuzus on its fleet - both N and F models with manual transmission and all are fitted with van bodies. The signage on all the trucks is particularly distinctive, and in keeping with the vibe of ISHKA’S Fitzroy based head office each features an individual striking livery commissioned and painted by local street artists.
The company is still growing with plans to open stores in Sydney and Adelaide over the next couple of years. The on-line store has also seen significant sales growth and this is likely to continue.
“Our trucks clock up a large mileage; it’s not unusual for our F Series models to be doing 2-3,000kms per week. The service guys at Westar therefore see us on a fairly regular basis, and they do a good job of servicing and maintaining the vehicles,” Jason added.

Providing comprehensive maintenance services for around 4,000 electrical substations requires a diverse range of skills and this is exactly what Q-Main supplies to major energy providers/contractors including United Energy, Powercor, Downer Group and ZNX, covering most areas of Victoria. Q-Main specialises in building maintenance and the fitout of substations covering indoor, ground and zone substations. The broad range of work required covers general building repairs, fence & gate repairs, door & lock repairs, rubbish removal, gutter & drain cleaning, weed & vegetation control, tree removal, stump removal and general ground maintenance. Since its inception in 2002, owner Graham Laycock has steadily built up his maintenance expertise. This includes having qualified trades people specialising in plumbing, electrical, carpentry and welding so there is no aspect of building maintenance for which he can’t provide a service. Given security is a top priority at these substation locations, Q-Main has developed extensive experience with building, erecting and repairing high risk intruder resistant fences and gates.

To provide the necessary transport of personnel and equipment, Graham currently has ten Isuzus on the fleet, the majority of which are N Series. It’s the reliability and durability that has seen Graham return time and time again to the brand. “They’re brilliant, really good; our oldest one has just clicked over 330,000kms and it’s still going strong – the reliability speaks for itself,” Graham said. “I’ve always liked the comfort, and my drivers enjoy driving them. We’ve got a new NPR 65/45-190 model arriving shortly which we’re looking forward to,” Graham added. The new truck is fitted with a beaver tail and hydraulic ramp manufactured by Hardiman Engineering in Woori Yallock, Victoria. This is designed to accommodate mowing equipment - another area of work Graham has been undertaking for many years. “In addition to the Isuzu trucks we’ve also got a couple of Isuzu D-MAXs on the fleet which are performing really well,” said Graham. The company also has the resources and accreditation to undertake civil works for numerous electrical and gas companies and has extensive experience with road repairs, trenching, concreting and lighting repairs. “We’ve been particularly pro-active in using Vacuum Extraction which provides a low impact, non invasive excavation service in an environmentally friendly manner. Vacuum excavating greatly reduces the risk of injury to personnel and eliminates the risk of damage to any surrounding structure,” Graham went on to say.
As the vacuum excavating process is non destructive, it can be used for a wide array of applications including potholing, excavating in confined spaces, post hole digging in heavily serviced areas, pit and conduit cleaning, excavating around trees and plants plus general cleaning up of work sites. Another environmentally sustainable initiative Q-Main has introduced to its extensive plant and equipment range is a ‘Jaw Crusher’ crushing plant. The ‘Jaw Crusher’ grinds materials including reinforced concrete, tiles, bricks, rock, marble, bitumen and masonry transforming the scrap material into perfectly reusable materials. Q-Main also does a small amount of in-house manufacturing; this includes substation floors, grates and doors plus EMF (Electro Magnetic Field Protection). With Graham’s wife, son and daughter all currently working in the business it is very much a family affair and Graham has confidence that when he eventually retires the next generation will keep Q-Main expanding and successful for many years ahead.

KTS RECYCLING PLAYS A BIG PART IN REDUCING LANDFILL AT KNOX TRANSFER STATION. WM Waste Management was founded in the mid 80’s by Bill Jeffs and is now managed by his son Mark. The company operates a bin hire service supplying skips across Melbourne to suit all manner of waste and rubbish removal. WM Waste Management is also responsible for many of the hard rubbish collections that local councils undertake on a regular basis, including some bundled garden organic collections.

Over time, Mark could see the need for a better system to recycle the various types of waste collected and in 2007 was successful in the tender to operate the Knox Recycling and Waste Transfer Station. Now known as KTS Recycling, the company operates 4 unique recycling and transfer stations. Operating either as a contractor or in conjunction with local Councils, the company provides a valuable recycling and rubbish disposal service and a unique recycled goods store, all in one. KTS Recycling, along with local councils, is committed to reducing waste disposed in Victorian landfill, therefore maintaining the natural beauty of the surrounding areas. Knox Recycling and Transfer Station is an example of one of these new waste facilities. Bucking conventional thinking, the station offers a solid waste disposal alternative to the traditional and more expensive rubbish tips Melbourne has long been familiar with.
“We work on the theory that ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ said KTS Recycling’s General Manager, Garry ‘Bluey’ Higgs. “ We are determined to ensure that most rubbish and solid waste from the Knox Recycling and Waste Transfer Station no longer ends up in Victorian landfill but instead goes to a variety of recycling options,” Bluey added.

Instead of ending up as landfill, an organisation regularly collects the mattress foam for recycling, while the springs and timber are also separated and sent to appropriate recycling premises.
“The service we receive from Patterson Cheney staff is also really good – another reason why we’ve chosen to stay with the brand –and why we have another Western Star on order right now,” Steve concluded.
Many items of solid waste collected at the Knox Transfer Station end up in the recycled goods store, or “Treasure Chest” as it is known. These include bricks, pavers, timber, roofing, furniture, books, clothes and even kitchen sinks.
The other transfer stations that KTS Recycling operate are located at Coldstream, Frankston and Wesburn. Like the Knox facility, all of these offer a rubbish disposal service and a unique recycled goods store, all in one.
“The sheer variety of material makes it an attractive place for collectors of antiques, gardeners, handymen or simply those in need of everyday household items,” Bluey went on to say.

The company now employs 50 staff and operates around 14 trucks. Many of those trucks are Western Star Day Cabs – the first one being ordered in 2007. Today they have four 5864SS Prime Movers fitted with the 12.8litre Detroit DD13 @ 450HP and three 4800 FS1s also with the DD13. All are fitted with either tipper or walking floor trailers to cater for the variety of rubbish and waste that needs to be transported.

AllPro Paint Systems has an impressive heritage, with three generations having been involved in the painting trade. Still very much a family affair, the company is today run by Paul Trantalis and their ethos of providing high quality work coupled with great service is still practised. “We don’t just do good work, we provide a high quality service that makes dealing with us a pleasant and stress free experience,” Paul said emphatically. Testament to these quality and service levels is that AllPro has never had to advertise for business – it flows through repeat and referral work. I hadn’t had a diesel before but as soon as we’d picked it up we took it to Adelaide on a single tank of fuel and my wife and I loved it – it’s diesel from now on for us!” Paul said. Paul also speaks highly about the D-MAX’s dependability and ruggedness, coupled with excellent comfort. He is a fan of the D-MAX’s low down grunt and the impressive 3.5 tonne towing capacity. “I picked up 50 drums of paint in my trailer when I bought my first D-MAX and I couldn’t even feel it – it was like I wasn’t towing anything,” Paul went on to say. 10
As much as Paul loves his D-MAX, it’s Patterson Cheney’s service levels in both the sales and service departments that really impress him. “The fact you get a loan vehicle every time mine needs a service is brilliant. They also explain to me in detail what they’ve done at each service, which I like. And the 24 hour servicing is an absolute winner; I drop it off at 5pm and pick it up again first thing in the morning – my business doesn’t suffer at all – it’s the best,” Paul added. Paul recently took delivery of an Isuzu MU-X, an obvious choice given his positive experience with the D-MAX. “I chose the MU-X because it shares much of its DNA with the D-MAX but with the added benefit of additional space and versatility – I can use it for both work and play - with its 7 seats it’s the perfect family transport at the weekend,” Paul explained. “I’ve told the boys at Patterson Cheney that as long as they keep providing their fantastic service levels I’ll keep coming back,” Paul laughed.

BATTERIES: Your battery is the electrical source for your vehicle so it pays to keep it in good condition.
In cold climates a low battery will freeze and be worthless in the future. One bad battery can spoil the remaining batteries; test your batteries to find a weak or bad cell battery. If age and cold cranking amps are within specs, replace the one bad battery only.
Keep your battery cases clean and ensure all connections are clean and tight. Have your batteries tested every year. If you have a truck that may be sitting stationary for a period of time, unhook the battery cables or install a quick disconnect and shut them off to prevent time drain.
If the battery is three to four years old and the CCA’s are a few hundred lower than original you may want to replace all batteries. Check the terminal lugs or clamps for corrosion and if they appear to be affected, cut them out and install new ones. Check the cables for soft spots, rubbed cases,
and corrosion and replace any questionable cables and loops. Make sure the batteries are tied down and feel secure to touch. When it comes to choosing a battery, ensure you select one that is in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommended specifications and suitable for your specific needs. How long a battery lasts depends on the outside temperature where it is used, and how well it’s maintained. So remember, look after your battery and it will look after you.
