Spring Blooms Early with the Home & Garden Show January can bring plenty of dreary winter days, but spring is in sight with the Oklahoma City Home & Garden Show. It’s time to start thinking about how you want to spruce up your lawn, home and garden for the spring season. Oklahoma City’s largest home and garden show will celebrate its 30th anniversary by hosting more than 500 local and national exhibitors at the Oklahoma State Fair Park January 20-22. The show will be blooming with home décor, new products, money-saving ideas and celebrity design advice. This year’s featured celebrity designer is full of personality and innovative ideas on how to transform living spaces from typical to tantalizing. Todd Davis, host of HGTV’s hit show “Room Crashers,” will show attendees how to bring the great outdoors inside to make interior spaces come to life. “The inside of your home shouldn’t be sedimentary. It should be active, purposeful and have life,” Davis said. “It should be fun to be indoors.” Other attractions are sure to inspire and entertain. I use this recipe for any cutout cookie I make not to mention it's a fabulous base for a sugar cookie pizza! 1 1/2 c. sugar 1 c. softned butter 2 eggs 1/3 c. milk 1 t. vanilla 1 t. vanilla bean paste 1/4-1/2 t. almond extract 4 c. flour 1 t. baking soda 1 t. baking powder 1 t. kosher salt

1 c. butter 1 1/3 c. sugar 1 T. karo 3 T. water 1 c. slivered almonds 1/2 lb. chocolate chopped pecans
Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt; set aside. Cream the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, milk, vanilla, vanilla bean paste and almond extract; mix until well combined. Gradually add the flour mixture and beat just until combined, scraping down the bowl, especially the bottom. Chill dough. On a floured surface roll out cookie dough unto desired thickness. Cut into shapes of choice and place on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees F. for 6-8 minutes depending on thickness of cookies. Cool on wire rack and frost with desired frosting. Melt butter in large saucepan-add sugar, karo, and water. Cook to hard crack (300 degrees) while constantly stirring. Quickly stir in almonds. Spread in foil lined cookie sheet that has been greased. Lay 1/2 of the chocolate on top-spread and sprinkle with pecans. Turn candy over and repeat with chocolate and pecans. Cool and break into desired pieces.

Wallace does his best to simplify dishes without sacrificing flavor, with a Turducken that is markedly easier than the labor-intensive classic, and a nine-ingredient Three Pigs and a Duck Soup that gets a major flavor boost from four cups of duck stock. However, these dishes call for some advance planning. For example, his Brined and Thymed pork shoulder is soaked for five to eight days before hitting the grill. They’ll also call for some belt loosening: Roasted Butternut Squash with Sage and Parmesan calls for two sticks of butter, his burger incorporates a half cup of bacon grease into the patty mixture, and the “Evil Frosting” for his “Innocent Cupcakes” is composed of three-quarters of a cup of lard and eight ounces of Marshmallow Fluff. beautiful table is all about the accessories and details. Here are some easy tips to personalize your table, add your style and make it warm and inviting. Your guests won't ever want dinner to end!
A d d t e x t u r e : Using different texture adds depth and warmth to your table. You can achieve this look several ways. Using a table runner, you can add fresh style to your grandma's beautiful china (or your classic white dinner plates) by picking up a yard of your favorite fabric and draping it across the center of your table. Another fun way is to drape two pieces of fabric horizontally across your table to add interest. Napkins are another great way to bring in texture and fresh flowers or seasonal foliage adds so much beauty. You can make napkin rings by tying together the ends of your favorite stem. Holly is beautiful for the holidays and adds a punch of red. A d d h e i g h t : It is so important to make sure you use different heights on your table. Different heights draw attention throughout your table. Candle sticks are a great way to add height. They don't even have to match, just bring them in from another room. The important part is that they have a color
or style in common with your table setting. Cake stands are another way to add height interest. You can serve from them or place a centerpiece on one for added height. Special Personal Touches: Every table needs a little personal touch! That could be a name card with an endearing nickname or welcoming thoughts or one of my favorites, individual salt and pepper shakers. It makes it easy for your guests to feel appreciated down to the last detail. In our table we used matching ones, but they don't have to. An eclectic mix would be beautiful too and if you don't have enough just borrow from a friend! L as t b u t n ot l e as t C o l o r ! Use an unexpected color during the holidays to add interest and set your table apart. Pick a color you love so it will inspire the details of your table. We have chosen blue. It is one of my favorite colors year round and I love in incorporate it into my holiday tables. There is no color that is off limits, just make it consistent throughout your tablescape. Preventing holiday weight gain is important, isn’t it? We all believe that being thin is “in”, but is it really? For most people, avoiding holiday weight gain is important. However, we need to more clearly define what constitutes good weight loss and when and where we cross the line.

he holidays have arrived and we all know what that means... gaining those unwanted extra pounds. A study was performed by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development looking at the average weight gain between Thanksgiving and New Years. Researchers believe that the average person gains a pound or two ever y year during the holidays. Keep in mind they are referring to the “average” person. Some gain more than that. Other ar ticles I have read feel that the average gain is more like 7 pounds. I like to think of the holidays beginning at Halloween and ending with New Years. We need to realize that these benign numbers add up. Let us suppose that a 25 year old female weighs approximately 135 pounds and she gains 2 pounds a year during the holidays. If she kept that trend over the next 25 years she would weigh 185 when she turns 50! Little gains can turn into big problems for someone who is not cognizant of their weight. I would imagine that many of you have watched people you know gain much more than that in a year. They wake up one day have that moment when they say to themselves “how did I get this way”? The number one rule is that you must stay active during the holidays. Many women tend to drop the fitness regimen during the holidays to become par ty planners, shoppers and caregivers for their families. You may have to reduce your days or time spent at the gym, but the worst mistake you can make is to totally quit working out during the holidays. There is nothing worse than eating more calories than usual AND burning off fewer calories by skipping your workouts. The next point to remember is to limit your high calorie holiday splurges to the actual event, par ty, or gathering. The problem is not the event itself; rather it is continuing to splurge all week or all month long! That Halloween candy can last forever it seems. We cer tainly don’t want to “waste” food because it’s like throwing
money away. My question is: how much would you pay to lose 10 pounds? My guess would be a whole lot more than those sweets cost you. Most of you reading this ar ticle have friends that never gain weight during the holidays. As a matter of fact, they never seem to gain weight during any par t of the year! I know these are the people we love to hate, but let’s explore what could or could not be happening with these people. I am here to tell you that being just thin isn’t always “in”. You are skinny and consequently you must
be really healthy, right? Not necessarily. You see, there are people that are overweight and healthy and there are people that are skinny and in terrible shape. The Metropolitan Life Insurance Height/Weight char t can show you where a person should ideally be for a longer and healthier life…supposedly. For example, if you are a female standing 5 feet 6 inches then you should weigh anywhere from 120-159 pounds depending on the size of your frame. If you are a man standing 6 feet tall and weighing anywhere from 149188 pounds then you are in a good health range depending on the size of your frame. So as long as you fit into your height/weight char t then you are worry free? It is not that simple. At a little over 6 feet tall, I weigh
approximately 245 pounds. Consequently, I am obese according to those char ts. However, my body fat is around 9% right now which is far from obese. Most men would have body fat over 25% at the same height and weight. You can also be what I like to call “skinny fat”. This means that you might weigh within the desired range but you might be severely lacking in muscle and have a significant level of body fat. This is par tly why I do not like to even weigh people for any other reason than factoring in their lean body mass (how much muscle they have). If a woman is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 120 pounds but has 25% body fat and another woman is the same height weighing 135 pounds with 15% body fat then who will look better? The “heavier” one will. She will be tighter and more toned and “look” skinnier due to less fat and more muscle. We all fall in variations of three different body types: Ectomorphic, Mesomorphic and Endomorphic. In most cases, just because you “look” a way does not equate to healthier. Ectomorphic body types (classic thin, lanky and can eat whatever they want) are often the ones who have never been on a diet. They tend to get away with eating double cheeseburgers and fries and can still lose weight very easily. For many of these body types they spend most of their life trying to gain weight and especially with men, they tend to lift weights and avoid cardiovascular exercise. However, over time the heavy saturated fat meals that they can get away with in terms of calories can become troublesome in terms of an accumulation of cholesterol and triglycerides in the ar teries. This can lead to atherosclerosis, which is a buildup of fatty material in the ar teries, including those surrounding the hear t. Combine this dietary practice with lack of hear t strengthening cardiovascular training and they can send themselves right down the road to hear t disease. The other major types are Mesomorphic and Endomorphic body types. Mesomorphic body types (strong, lean, athletic types, but can gain fat weight if they don’t watch it) are the most balanced of the body types and benefit greatly from weight training and cardiovascular training. Endomorphic body types (naturally heavier and stocky in nature) depend greatly on cardiovascular workouts and really must watch their diets to ward off weight gain. The Endomorphic body types tend to be the most naturally strong. Your average NFL lineman falls in this category.
The skinny Ectomorphs tend to project health but the Mesomorphic and especially Endomorphic types, which can gain fat easily, tend to need to eat healthier and perform more cardiovascular training in the name of losing fat. Ironically, the needs of the Endomorphic and the Mesomorphic body types push them to eat better and train harder for the sake of staying lean and looking good. Family histor y is always something to consider when looking at your risk factors for hear t disease. Do not assume just because you fall into a height/weight char t standard or even acceptable standards of 15% body fat for men and 23% body fat for women that you are “healthy”. I have seen “healthy” people with high blood pressure and lipid profiles out of the acceptable range often enough to know that it is not that rare. The best bet to insure you are truly healthy is to have your physician run a complete metabolic test including a lipid and thyroid panel. This will give you a clearer picture of your kidney function, liver function, cholesterol level, triglycerides, thyroid levels and much more to ser ve as a baseline for your health. Have these tests run ever y year or two in order to track your internal health as you age. It is better to prepare and prevent than to repair and repent. The holidays can be a great time to star t tracking your health. Why wait until you gained your weight? If you are thin, do you assume that you are healthy? The goal is to be healthy and sometimes, but not always, your weight can help determine that. However, remember that thin might be “in” but not necessarily does thin equate to being healthy.

1. Wrap the foam sheet with the transparent gift wrap and glue in place with low-temp glue. 2. Find the exact center of the garland and pin it to the center bottom of the wrapped sheet. Pin the garland along the bottom of the sheet and up each side pinning and securing with glue as you go. 3. Tie the remaining ends of the garland together and use as the hanger. 4. Make a small bow and glue to the top of the hanger. 5. Secure holiday cards with decorative pins. SKILL LEVEL: Beginner
Fabric Tucked Trees YOU'LL Need:
STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam: Cones: 12”, 9” and 6” Other Materials: 3” – 4” Squares of Fabric (12” cone uses about a 3/4 yard of fabric) Mini Ornaments
White Clear Drying Craft Glue Glitter Tools: Metal Nail File Sponge Brush Low Temp Glue Gun
1. Start at the bottom of the cone. Lay a square of fabric right side up on the side of the cone and use the metal nail file to tuck the center of the fabric into the bottom edge of the cone. Push fabric in just far enough to ruffle the edges, as shown. Continue tucking in fabric squares about ½” apart to cover the entire cone. 2. Use the low temp glue gun to glue the mini ornaments evenly spaced into the fabric trees. Glue one ornament as a tree topper. 3. Thin white glue with water and brush glue over edges of fabric and tops of ornaments, sprinkle trees with glitter. SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

Low-Temp Glue Gun White Tacky Glue (clear drying) Scissors Pins Black Marker Newspaper
1. Draw a Christmas tree silhouette shape (with star at the top and short tree trunk at the bottom) onto a piece of newspaper, 18” tall and 12” wide. Cut out the silhouette and pin to the foam sheet. Trace around the silhouette with the black marker. Remove the silhouette and use the foam cutter to cut out the tree. 2. Arrange and glue the holiday greetings onto the tree smallest to largest. Cut a star and a tree trunk from the scrapbook paper and glue in place on the tree. 3. Using low-temp glue, attach a loop of ribbon to the back of the tree for a hanger. Tie a small bow around the top of the tree. SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam: Cubes: (4) 3” Other Materials: Scrapbook Papers: solid colors Christmas Cards: (6) 5”x5” Glitter Pens, Paint Pens Tools: Scissors, Ruler
1. Choose six different colors of scrapbook paper to coordinate with the six cards. Cut 6x6” squares from the scrapbook papers. Center and glue the cards to the coordinating papers. Cut each of the 6x6” card squares into quarters, each quarter measuring 3x3”. 2. Lay the cubes on the table creating a 6x6” square. Glue the four quarters of one of the 6x6” card squares to the cubes. Continue gluing the card square puzzle pieces to the six sides of the cubes. 3. Use the paint pens to write the year the card was received and who it was from. Use the glitter pens to frame around the cards. SKILL LEVEL: Beginner
