Charlene Michaux Publisher/Editor charlie@bradymediainc.com Dear Parents, As a momprenuer, I’m often asked how I manage a small business, mom-life and raising an 8 year old. And my reply is always, PASSION! I simply love what I do. It’s been 9 years since I published my first magazine, Flagler Parent and since then I’ve published two more titles: Volusia Parent and St. Johns Parent. Currently I am hard at work developing our newest publications, Special Child and Florida Baby. Little did I know how popular the publications would become in such a short time, and that’s because of the continued community support and readers like you. The goal starting out was to create a community-based parenting magazine that would be a “go-to” resource for families when planning a night out, a family vacation, or just a fun filled weekend... and according to our parent feedback, we have succeeded in doing just that! Starting this month, we are doing our part to reduce our carbon footprint by opting to print on recyclable paper! Our readers will continue to be able to find us in the places they play, work, and live, and advertisers will find our rates even more affordable for businesses of any size. And don’t forget about our our digital apps. Download and read your favorite parent magazine today on any device, anytime, anywhere! In this month’s issue, we celebrate pet month! It was so much fun picking out covers featuring family pets. We have included a list of pet-related businesses for you and your 4-legged family members this month. We also have a last-minute list of summer camps for those of you (like me) that haven’t secured their child’s summer camp schedule yet. Plus, Check out our our top ten favorite resort poolson Page 24. I have had the chance to visit some of these awesome resorts in the past month, and WOW! talk about the ultimate family vacation right here is our own backyard! For those of you who want to travel a little further, we recommend, Hawks Cay Resort in the beautiful Florida Keys. This one may take a little more planning, but well worth the $$$. For the Disney bound families, we have seven resorts in the Disney Springs area that provide transportation to the parks and are affordable for any budget. Also, in our schools news section, we added the 2017-18 calendar for your fridge so you can get a jump start on planning your 2018 year! Lastly, I’d like to wish all of you Moms, Grandmothers and super Aunts out there a great Mother’s Day!

Dealing with

Meltdowns Your 3-year-old is playing with a friend and suddenly picks up a toy truck and throws it at him. You tell him to play nicely and he throws a toy car at you! Instead of listening to you, he has a temper tantrum and his friend begins to cry. In less than five minutes, a pleasant play date has turned into a disaster. You start to think either something is wrong with your child or you are not a good parent. You are not alone. In her book The Top 10 Preschool Parenting Problems, Rosalyn Duffy ranks meltdowns as the #3 preschool parenting problem. She separates them into two categories – frustra¬tions and tantrums. Typical 3-year-olds become frustrated and have tantrums when they get angry. He may not have the words to explain what happened to make him angry and does not yet have the social skills to find a way to seek help from others. Anger and frustration are physical and emotional responses. When we’re angry, our body sends blood to our brain with chemicals that make it hard to think rationally. So, instead of your child telling you he is angry because his friend took his favorite toy truck and won’t give it back, he throws the truck at his friend, the car at you and 10 MAY 2017

begins to cry. You can help him calm down and restore normal blood flow to his brain! Use a soft, soothing voice. In place of yelling, “Stop crying! Be quiet and sit down!” whisper, “What’s upsetting you; why are you angry?” Gently rub your child’s shoulders, neck or face. Ask him to take deep breaths and slowly blow each one out, like smelling a flower and blowing bubbles. Once your child is calm, you can talk about what happened and ask how he could solve the problem. Suggest a solution, for example; “Perhaps you could take turns playing with the truck or find another truck for your friend.” When your child is calm, practice what he should do when he feels angry or frustrated. Take deep breaths and slowly blow them out together, then help him find ways to suggest solutions on his own. It will also help to practice proactive parenting. Talk to your child about situa¬tions where she has had a tantrum in the past. Try asking “Remember when we visited your friend and you were upset when it was time to leave? What could we do to keep you from getting so upset?” Ask her what she needs and plan what you will do to help her leave without getting upset. Talk to her about expectations for leaving the friends

house then role-play leaving her friend’s house. She may enjoy playing the part of the mother while you play the part of the child or use a doll or a stuffed animal as the child and let her be the mom. Role-play both acceptable and unacceptable behavior and what the child and the mom do in each situation. Our children learn by watching and listening to the adults in their lives and model what they see so it is important to act and talk the way you want your child to act and talk when they’re upset. Planning ahead, practicing deep, calm breathing and problem solving will help minimize frustration and tantrums. Enrich Your Child’s

Summer Schedule with Local Activities & Save A Bundle by Christina Katz

Sleep-away camp can be an exciting, empowering adventure for kids who are mature enough to handle the expectations. However, there are plenty of good reasons why overnight camp may not be a perfect fit for your family this year. Don’t feel like you have to apologize if you want to take a more customized approach to summer fun to meet the needs of your kids locally. Chances are good you can find day camps, classes and activities in your area that will keep smiles on your kids’ faces all summer long. The primary reason we don’t send our teenage daughter away to camp is because it would be challenging to find a camp that would meet all of her needs in one experience. We can better satisfy her desires, and spend a lot less money, by making the most of opportunities in our area. True, we end up driving miles in multiple directions and juggling a variety of schedules, but somehow the activities we’ve chosen end up complimenting each other nicely. And we always make sure to

12 MAY 2017

take a few weeks off, usually at the end of summer, to rest, relax, and regroup before school starts back up again. When it comes to stringing together local experiences, imagine the beads that would go on a charm bracelet for each of your kids. Which beads best represent your child’s interests? A soccer ball, a book and pair of hiking boots? Or perhaps a fairy wand, ballet slippers and a teacup? No matter what the collection of interests, gather up some regional guides, hop online and conduct searches, and ask friends what they have planned for their kids. You are going on a summer activity hunt. Who says summer can’t be educational and fun? Customizing a summer schedule for each child in the family is an eye-opening adventure in and of itself. If you want a peaceful summer, help your kids stretch their wings beyond the usual, school-year routine. Turn your child’s summer into weeks of entertaining growth by thoughtfully scheduling activities each year.

Ink Year-round Commitments

You may already have school year activities that extend into summer like scouting or 4-H. Be sure to get these commitments on your child’s schedule first, so you don’t inadvertently overbook. If your child participates in a sport or another competitive activity, training camps are often required during summer. When I was a kid, I often envied teammates who rejoined the team playing on a higher level than the season before thanks to attending summer training camp.

Ask For Referrals

Chances are good that parents who have lived in your area for several years have the 411 on the best day camps and summer classes. Poll your friends individually or post a poll on social media to gather information. Be sure to specify all your kids’ interests to attract the most relevant recommendations.

Don’t Overlook Summer School

Since the summer before high school, we sign our daughter up to take a wellness course in the summer. Getting a jump on these pre-requisites allows her to take an extra art elective during the school year, which provides a welcome break during her school day. Ask your child’s school counselor if taking summer school courses might benefit your child’s schedule next year. Some districts even allow online learning or swapping summer athletic training for physical education requirements.

Check Local Resources

Schools, libraries, and community centers are great resources for finding summer activities. Be sure to ask for any printed or online guides they may offer. Also check towns near where you live to see if they offer additional programs that may interest your child. By driving one town over, at the beginning of each summer, we found a community theater production our daughter can participate in inexpensively. Now that’s worth a ten-minute drive.

Consider Your Child’s Needs

Be mindful of how much structure and supervision each offering includes. Some kids are more self-motivated than others. Sometimes a kid-centric focus is part of an activity’s allure. But if you know your child flourishes in a structured environment with adult leadership, trust your instincts. Consider scaffolding more leadership into your child’s summer experiences over time. If your child is reticent about trying new activities or making new friends, see if any school friends wish to try a new activity together. This can also allow for carpooling.

Go Your Own Way

You may want your child to benefit from the experience of trying a new experience without school friends. If so, enroll in activities where enthusiasm for the topic will trump any firstday butterflies. Do not bend to social pressure if all of the other kids are doing an activity that is not a good match for your child. If the program focus isn’t a fit, the experience isn’t going to be enriching no matter how many friends are in attendance. Make timely, age-appropriate choices for your children, and when religion is a focus, make sure it suits your family’s values.

Don’t Overlook A Summer Reading Challenge

If your child has a busy summer schedule, you might be concerned about not enough down time. Signing your child up for a summer reading challenge at the beginning of summer is a great way to build downtime into any type of schedule. On busy days, reading will provide a welcome reprieve from social activity. And on lazy days, having a daily book-reading commitment can get an unscheduled day off to a good start.

Budget For Sleep-away Camp

As you are putting your children through the paces of overcoming fears about new experiences with fresh faces, you may be thinking that this is all great preparation for sleep-away camp in the future. And that’s true. Why not start a conversation now about the possibility of sleep-away camp down the road? Consider opening a savings account to make overnight camp as positive of an experience as possible when the time comes. Encourage your child to pitch in and help save money with you. Then, when the time to register arrives, you’ll both have buy-in and the flexibility of choice you crave.

re you looking for an alternative to long lines, overcrowded parks and high expenses, that leave no time for genuine family bonding? While amusement and theme parks are an easy, go-to solution for family vacations, there are other magical travel options that can offer exposure to new activities, interaction with nature, and discovery of culture and history outside of most families’ normal comfort zones. As the original all-inclusive destination for families, a dude or guest ranch vacation guarantees plenty of time to bond and spend time as a family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Dude ranches give families the opportunity to challenge and revive their bodies, minds and spirits in some of the most breathtaking areas in the U.S., with a myriad of outdoor adventures such as rock climbing, cattle roping, horseback riding, zip lines, ATV riding and whitewater rafting. No matter which ranch you choose to visit, the Dude Ranchers’ Association (DRA) can help you select the perfect guest ranch for your family, with more than 100 DRA-accredited dude ranches in North America. Here are 5 reasons for a dude ranch vacation:

Explore, play and more – Located along the banks of the North Platte River in the heart of southern Wyoming’s Medicine Bow Mountains, A Bar A Guest Ranch is one of the oldest and largest dude ranches in the country, with nearly 100,000 acres for guests to explore. The ranch is a paradise for children, with activities including horseback riding, fishing, soccer, arts and crafts, music and drama, swimming, tennis, and educational games, such as cork boat and sack races. Teenagers can enjoy inner tubing down the river and golf before settling down with their family to enjoy dinner cooked outside over an open fire. Reconnect with nature on horseback – Rustic yet replete with all the modern amenities you’ll ever need, Rainbow Trout Ranch caters to children of all ages. Located near several historic Spanish land grants in Antonito, Colo., Rainbow Trout is surrounded by the spectacular San Juan Mountains. Ride horses, catch some trout, hike to an overlook with your kids, relax and more. Kids ages six and older – fondly known on the ranch as “Cowpokes” – are given their own horse for the week, and “Buckaroos” – children ages three to five – are led on short rides by ranch counselors. Learn to work as a team – Drowsy Water Ranch, situated 90 miles west of Denver, Colo., has programs for children of all ages, from infants to teenagers, along with plenty of activities for parents and grandparents. Ditch technology for outside activities like obstacle courses, zip lining, swimming, hiking, archery and rafting. Afterward, head to the main 14 MAY 2017

lodge to enjoy playing cards, browsing the library or just visiting with new friends while drinking lemonade.

Relax, rejuvenate and reconnect in style – Mountain Sky Guest Ranch sits on over 10,000 operational acres of unspoiled wilderness in the heart of Yellowstone Country in Emigrant, Mont. The ranch combines outdoor adventure for the entire family and the comforts of an upscale resort in the region’s most spectacular location. There’s no doubt your family will enjoy the breathtaking views, fine dining and luxury environment. From a crisp morning hike, to rafting down the Yellowstone River, to horseback rides through acres of meadows, there’s something for every member of the family. End the day with a mealtime horseback ride, where you’ll be treated to tasty barbecue, learn to dance with the wranglers and sing your favorite western songs around the campfire.

One-of-a-kind fishing adventures – 4UR Ranch provides an all-inclusive family vacation adventure in Mineral County, Colo. Try your hand at fly fishing with access to some of the finest waters around, including one of the only entirely private tailwater trout streams in the American West, trophy ponds, and both sides of the legendary Rio Grande River. Whether you’re a family of anglers or not, no one will be bored on this vacation. Here, kids and adults can enjoy their own level of adventure. The ranch’s staff sees to the kids’ needs while the parents are off hiking, horseback riding or fishing. From nature explorations, to soaking in the hot springs, to a round of golf at the nearby Rio Grande Club – there’s plenty of adventure to suit everyone’s tastes.

feature Lean on community Several moms polled for this article agreed that moms' night outs with their friends help them feel more optimistic. And science proves it. Studies find that time spent bonding with friends boosts a woman's level of oxytocin, a natural hormone that reduces stress. Check out mothers' groups in your area if you are struggling to build a support network.

Commit to healthy living

Women who make time to care for their bodies, enjoy a stronger self-image and feel more self-confident and energetic. Exercise, try to get adequate sleep, schedule regular massages and make healthy food choices to feel your best. "I know that when I am reasonably well-rested and happy, I am absolutely more patient, energetic and empathetic to everyone in my household," says Erica Wilson, a mom of one.

Take time for personal pursuits Whether you like surfing Pinterest, training for a 5K or simply taking a warm bubble bath, moments stolen throughout the week contribute to our overall sense of well-being. "I try to take at least a few minutes a day outside. I close me eyes, take deep breaths, and listen to the sounds," says Melanie Werner, a mom of one.

Nourish yourself During the rush of the week, most of us throw meals together just to get our hungry crew fed. If you enjoy cooking, find a day when you can slow down and relish the preparation. The process of chopping and measuring ingredients is meditative and soothing. Create a feast to delight all of the senses by serving your meal on a table laid out with your favorite dishes and cheerful flowers.

Follow a spiritual practice by Christa Melnyk Hines

“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” — Dalai Lama We know that happiness is an emotion that can come and go. But how do we recapture that bubbly feeling amid the challenges and stresses of parenthood? Here are a few tips from moms for staying positive and feeling good.

Laugh

Family life can be funny. Kids say hilarious things. Pay attention and write those gems down. Next time you need a lift, read them. Need more ideas? Look at funny family videos or photos, hang out with lighthearted friends, watch a silly movie or read a humorous book.

Get a groove on

Whether she participates in a Jazzercise class or switches on upbeat dance tunes in her kitchen, Jessie Mallicoat, a mom of three, says, “If I’m in a bad mood, I put on some ‘dancy’ music and it usually helps.” In fact, studies find that dancing boosts the body’s feel-good endorphins. Dancing has even been found to reverse depression and increase self-confidence.

Set boundaries Moms who are happier make conscious decisions on a daily basis about who and what is allowed into their lives. Switching to this way of thinking is empowering. You don’t have to be harsh or hurtful to accomplish this goal. Politely decline invitations that don’t fit with your priorities and limit interactions with negative individuals. 34 MAY 2017

Studies find that people who lean on an inner belief system are happier. You don't have to be religious to be spiritual. You can feel a connection to spirituality through helping others, nature, yoga, music, art, personal meditation or journaling. Michelle Hovick, a mom of one, says the "Elevation" church app is one of her favorite spiritual gateways to a mood shift.

Practice gratitude In a gratitude study at Eastern Washington University, researchers found a positive correlation between gratitude and happiness. "We have found that grateful individuals tend to be happy individuals and that grateful thinking improves mood," the researchers report. Try writing down three things you are thankful for each day.

Access good childcare

Seek reliable childcare in order to feel secure pursuing personal interests, maintaining routine health check-ups and for date nights with your partner. A positive marriage contributes to the overall emotional health and happiness of your family. Having trouble finding a sitter? Check out SitterCity.com, Care.com and ask other parents for references.

Avoid comparison

Parenting philosophies that work well in one family, may not work well in another. Thanks to the influx of information at our fingertips, parents have no shortage of advice. Decide which strategies make sense for your family. And beware of spending too much time on social media if you’re starting to feel like you don’t measure up. “Being happy with yourself and how you parent is key to accepting other moms and how they parent, which creates a more supportive parenting community all around,” says Mandy Yokim, mom of two.

If most of your answers were: A - Crunchy Mama From food to cleansers, you take an all-natural approach to life. You are committed to a healthy lifestyle and to feeding your family wholesome, unprocessed foods. You either belong to a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) for locally sourced foods or you grow your own. You typically shop at places like Whole Foods and Sprouts with your cloth bags in hand. If you wear makeup, you keep it simple. You opted for a natural birth with your children, hired a doula and had a birth plan in place when you were pregnant. You have a “breast is best” philosophy for feeding your babies. You may have opted to homeschool your kids. What others admire about you: Your commitment to living a more holistic, simpler life.

B - Butterfly Mama You rarely have a hair out of place and other moms are constantly wondering how you manage to look so classy and put together all of the time. You have a quiet confidence and own your fashionable style. You not only care about how you look, you also have the attitude that selfcare is important to being a better mother. Your home further reflects your creativity and is a show stopper that is as comfortable as it is stylish. Whether you shop at garage sales or high-end department stores, you always know what looks good and your kids generally share your sense of style. What others admire about you: Your charming personality and fashion sense.

C - Connected Mama Social media has created a perfect storm of connection for you. You not only get to chat daily with friends and family from afar, you can share entertaining bits and pieces of your daily life with friends who may be right around the corner. Networking comes with ease and you manage to find friends where ever you go. You frequently organize moms night outs, get togethers and events. Your smart phone is your favorite device. Of all the moms listed, you are probably the most sleep deprived. But you thrive on busyness and tend to be exceptionally organized. What others admire about you: Your vast network and your resourcefulness.

40 MAY 2017

D - Sports Mama You love sports as much as your kids. Your competitive nature can get you a little riled up during games. You push your children to always do their best whether in school, sports or life. You typically wear your hair in a pony tail, sporting a sun visor and a t-shirt that says “Baseball/Soccer/Football Mom.” You come to games prepared with a cooler full of healthy snacks, bottled water, blankets, an umbrella and a comfortable bleacher chair. Your favorite mode of transportation is your SUV or minivan to accommodate the sports equipment, random water bottles and any team members who need rides. As something of a mother hen, you carry a first-aid kit and can always be depended on to offer praise and encouragement to every player. What others admire about you: Your can-do, up-beat and playful personality.

E - Free Spirit Mama You tend to take a go-with-the-flow approach to life and prefer to live for the present. Your favorite outfit is whatever is clean and ready to throw on first thing in the morning. You don’t let a screaming child rush you into decisions you aren’t comfortable with. You aren’t one to hurry to urgent care the minute your child sneezes, falls or nibbles on some sand. You don’t worry too much about the daily messes and chaos of life. Your attitude is that inconveniences and frustrations will sort themselves out eventually. For now, you say, let’s celebrate the moments and embrace the journey. What others admire about you: Your reliable, even-keeled sense of calm.

F - Mama Bear Committed to the health and wellness of the family, you are an avid reader of medical news and child development books. You tend to worry about your family frequently and pay close attention to any sniffles or complaints of body aches. You frequently evaluate if your kids’ behavior is due to illness, allergy or some other disorder and you aren’t shy about consulting with the pediatrician.Your kids knew about stranger danger and how germs spread before any other kid on the block. You keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in the car, the house and in your purse. You are happiest in a clean, well-organized environment. What others admire about you: Your nurturing, fiercely protective spirit.

For this Mother’s Day – Show Your Love! Mothering is a balancing act. We may feel stretched thin as we juggle caring for our kids, managing a career, and running a household. Somewhere in there, we can show our love best in how we care for ourselves. That’s why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed the Show Your Love! campaign. As part of the campaign, they developed an awesome toolkit for busy moms that supports creating a plan for strong physical and mental health. Check it out at https://www.cdc.gov/preconception/showyourlove. The toolkit encourages you to choose 2-3 goals that you can manage. Then it has a checklist to help you set your plan in motion. There are some essential checklists provided that also help us consider areas that might need our attention. 1. Prevent unplanned pregnancies – make informed decisions with the help of a qualified health provider. 2. Eat healthy foods – plan ahead by making a list before we shop, shopping on the edge of the store where the healthier foods are, and making sure there’s plenty of fruits and veggies! 3. Be active – setting aside a time for regular physical activity – even if it’s only in 10 minute increments throughout the day. 4. Take folic acid – it’s good for your health and if you plan on future pregnancies, it helps to prevent birth defects of the brain and spine. Take a multivitamin every day! 5. Prevent getting sexually transmitted infections – to get the facts on exposure to STI’s go to http://www.cdc.gov/std/ healthcomm/the-facts.htm. 6. Avoid harmful chemicals, metals, and other toxic substances around the home and in the workplace – for more information about preventing environmental exposure to harmful substances go to http:/www.prhe.ucsf.edu/prhe/pdfs/ToxicMatters.pdf 7. Make sure your vaccinations are up to date – vaccinations are our best defense against many diseases, some of which can cause serious problems. Check out the vaccination schedule before you see your doctor. http:/www.cdc.gov/vaccines/ schedules/easyto-readadult.html 8. Manage and reduce stress and get mentally healthy – be aware of things that cause stress and make a plan to reduce it such as getting enough rest, exercise to lift mood, and limiting alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs, and have a strong support system. http://www.webmd.com/balance/stress-management/default.htm 9. If you smoke – stop now! If you don’t – stay away from those who are smoking. For help, talk to your doctor or call the quit line at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669). 10. Don’t use other people’s prescription medicine or use street drugs – taking drugs may provide temporary relief for stress or anxiety but eventually they become the source for many consequences. If you think you need help, talk with your doctor or ask a trusted friend for help. Narcotics Anonymous 24 Hour Helpline: 1-844-344-3155 or www.daytonana.org. 11. Reduce alcohol intake and if you think you are pregnant, stop drinking immediately and make an appointment to see your doctor. Alcohol can cause serious birth defects. 12. Stop partner violence – abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual. No-one deserves to be abused. Love shouldn’t ever hurt. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 10800-799-SAFE or 800-787-3224 (TDD). 13. Manage health conditions – such as asthma, obesity, diabetes. Learn as much as you can about your health condition(s), talk with your doctor, and link to support to help manage. 14. Learn about family’s health history – this can help determine which problems I might need to look for and help with prevention or management. 15. Get regular check-ups – put your doctors name and number in your cell phone and make sure to put a reminder in to make your next appointment! Make a list of questions to ask your doctor next visit. SHOW YOUR LOVE- MAKE CHOICES THAT SUPPORT YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING! YOU’RE WORTH IT!!!!

Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” directed by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning. The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazer (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea – especially Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has never faced. Also stars Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Stephen Graham.
