HANK YOU TO ALL MY DUDE NATION FAMILY MEMBERS! This past spring and summer has been a humbling experience in many ways. Your encouraging words, calls, letters, emails, texts, messenger chats and facebook posts have really made me realize how much GOD HAS BLESSED ME! Y’ALL ROCK! For the first time in 7 years. DUDE disappeared. WTH DUDE? OK, I was a HAROLD snow skiing on the first day of my skiing trip to Tahoe with childhood friends, then I came hauling butt around the tree and got introduced to a blind jump 7’ in the air. Needless to say, I did not stick the landing and landed on my head. OUCH INDEED DUDE! The morale of the story, according to many of my so called friends. “You’re too old to be skiing!” LOL And this is why the spring issue of DUDE never happened. I missed y’all DUDE. Enough drama, THANK YOU! LOL Many knew, when I said, “I’LL BE BACK!” It feels good to be back in the barn saddling up our favorite horse for nice late summer/fall DUDE RIDE. Make sure you get those horses well watered down before we head out of the DUDE RANCH during these hot sultry humid temperatures. Grab an extra handful of jerky, this might be a long ride catching up with folks so long after our last ride together. YAH, GIDDY UP! Let’s get going, we’re burning daylight. Per usual, we always like to dedicate each issue to a DUDE or group of DUDES and put them in our world famous, DUDE HALL of FAME. Well, this issue we would like to induct our first of the MLB Boys Of Summer and they both represent what is beautiful about this great country we call home. GEORGE HERMAN “BABE” RUTH & HENRY LOUIS “HANK” AARON. Not sure who your favorite baseball player is of all time, but it may very well include one of these two DUDES. They are inexorably linked with MLB and our country’s history, so it only seems fitting that we induct them both at the same time. Joe, Ted, Cy, Micky, Jacky, Willie and many others are worthy of DUDE HALL of FAME induction, but BABE set the bar and HANK jumped over it. George Herman Ruth Jr. was born in 1895 at 216 Emory Street in Pigtown, a working-class section of Baltimore Maryland, named for its pork meat-packing plants. Ruth’s parents, George Herman Ruth, Sr. and Katherine Schamberger, were both of German ancestry. George was sent at the age of 7 to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, a reformatory and orphanage. He spent 12 years there as his daddy’s saloon was deemed not a safe place for a child to be growing up. Got a point there DUDE! In 1912, Babe was playing street ball with his fellow Industrial School Boys and he was always getting in trouble for hitting long balls and breaking out the windows of nearby Baltimore businesses. Ruth met Helen Woodford by some accounts, in a coffee shop in Boston where she was a waitress and they were married in October 1914, he was 19 and she was 17. They adopted a daughter, Dorothy in 1921. Ruth and Helen separated around 1925, reportedly due to his repeated infidelities. George married actress and model Claire Merritt Hodgson and adopted her daughter Julia. In early 1914, Babe was signed to a professional baseball contract by Jack Dunn, owner and manager VOLUME 8 NUMBER 1

of the minor-league Baltimore Orioles. The train journey to spring training in Fayetteville, North Carolina was likely Ruth’s first outside the Baltimore area. Babe Ruth’s first appearance as a professional ballplayer was in an inter-squad game on March 7, 1914. Ruth played shortstop, and pitched the last two innings of a 15–9 victory. In his second at bat, Ruth hit a long home run to right, which was reported locally to be longer than a legendary shot hit in Fayetteville by Jim Thorpe. The Bambino arrived in Boston on July 11, 1914, Ruth finished the 1915 season 18–8 as a pitcher; as a hitter, he batted .315 and had four home runs. Ruth went 24–13 with a 2.01 ERA and six shutouts in 1917, but the Sox finished in second place. 1918 season. Ruth hit .300, with 11 home runs. as a pitcher, and had a 13–7 record with a 2.22 ERA. The 1919 season saw record-breaking attendance, and Ruth’s home runs for Boston made him a national sensation. On December 26, 1919, Ruth’s contract was sold to the New York Yankees (1920–34), thus starting the curse dubbed “The Curse of the Bambino!” The home runs kept coming; Ruth tied his own record of 29 on July 15, 1920. September 4, he both tied and broke the organized baseball record for home runs in a season, snapping Perry Werden’s 1895 mark of 44. 54 home runs, 158 runs scored and 137 RBI’s, in 1921, Ruth finished the regular season with 59 home runs, batting .378 and with a slugging percentage of .846. On March 6, 1922, Ruth signed a new contract, for three years at $52,000 a year. Babe Ruth returned to his normal production during 1926, batting .372 with 47 home runs and 146 RBIs. The 1927 New York Yankees team is considered one of the greatest squads that ever took the field. Before the 1928 season, Ruth signed a new contract for an unprecedented $80,000 per year. In 1946, Ruth began experiencing severe pain over his left eye and had difficulty swallowing. In November 1946, he entered French Hospital in New York for tests, which revealed that Ruth had an inoperable malignant tumor at the base of his skull and in his neck. On April 27, 1947, Babe Ruth Day, Ruth visited Yankee Stadium for the final time in his life, appearing at the 25th anniversary celebrations of “The House that Ruth Built.” On August 16, 1948, at 8:01 p.m., Ruth died in his sleep at the age of 53 BABE racked up some pretty awesome stats over his career; Lifetime batting average of .342, 2,873 total hits, 2,213 RBI’s, had a pitching record of 94-46 with an ERA of 2.28 and of course those record breaking 714 Home Runs. Well record breaking until along came a DUDE named, Henry Louis “HANK” Aaron. HAMMERIN HANK was born in Mobile, Alabama on February 5, 1934, one year before BABE played his last game. Herbert Aaron, Sr. and Estella (Pritchett) Aaron are Hank’s parents and he has seven brothers and sisters. They grew up very poor. HIs boyhood idol was none other than Jackie Robinson. Robinson Aaron attended Central High School as a freshman and a sophomore. Like most high schools, they did not have organized baseball and so he played outfield and third base for the Mobile Black Bears, a semipro team. Hank Aaron was a member in the Boy Scouts of America. 1949, at the age of fifteen, Aaron had his first tryout with an MLB franchise, the Brooklyn Dodgers. Hard to believe but Hank did not make the team. Kind of reminds me of MJ not making the varsity squad in high school. GO FIGURE DUDE! However, on November 20, 1951, Aaron was signed to a contract on behalf of the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League, where he played three months. However Hank had a .366 batting average in 26 official Negro league games, with 5 home runs, 33 RBI’s, 41 hits and 9 stolen bases. The Braves purchased Aaron from the Clowns for $10,000 In 195 1, Hank met his future wife, Barbara Lucas. The night they met, Lucas decided to attend the Braves’ game. Aaron singled, doubled, and hit a home run in the game. On October 6, Aaron and Lucas married. In 1958, Aaron’s wife noted that during the offseason he liked “to sit and watch those shooting westerns.” He also enjoyed cooking and fishing. HANK WAS A DUDE for sure! In 1953, the Braves promoted him to the Jacksonville Braves, their Class-A affiliate in the South Atlantic League. The Braves won the league championship that year. Aaron led the league with 115 runs, 208 hits, 36 doubles, 125 RBI’s, 338 total bases and a battling average of .362. Hank won the league’s MVP Award. Milwaukee Braves left fielder, Aaron hit .314 with 27 home runs and 106 RBI, in 1955. In 1957, Aaron won his only NL MVP Award, In 1958, Aaron hit .326, with 30 home runs and 95 RBIs. He led the Braves to another pennant, but this time they lost a seven-game World Series to the Yankees. 1963, Aaron nearly won the triple crown. He led the league with 44 home runs and 130 RBI and finished third in batting average. In that season, Aaron became the third player to steal 30 bases and hit 30 home runs in a single season. On July 31, 1969, Aaron hit his 537th home run, passing Mickey Mantle’s total;

The BUZZ About Bees PHOTOS AND ARTICLE BY MARVIN BOUKNIGHT

I

have always been fascinated by bees. I’m sure some of it comes from watching Winnie the Pooh and watching how fond he was of honey and just how irresistible he made is seem in the cartoons. Remember watching him just scoop some of that delicious honey and eat it up? To be honest, I’m sure my fondness for honey probably comes from my dad. He was a honey lover, let me tell you! He ate it on everything and I fondly remember him almost every morning having a piece of toast, peanut butter, and a lavish amount of honey. Almost every birthday, Father’s Day, and just because we loved him, honey was the gift we gave him. I only wish I would have been able to have raised bees and produced honey to give him, but it just didn’t work out that way. I just know he would have been proud and would claim it was the best honey he’d every tasted! I’m sure he’s watching Gabrielle and I as we work with our bees now, and he’s probably licking his lips just thinking about the rich delicious honey our bees will produce. The first honey’s for you, Dad! When I moved up to Charlotte and began a new career as a museum director, we had a special event and invited a local beekeeper to attend. He brought a small box with a single frame of bees for display and I started up a conversation with him following our event. He invited me to attend a local beekeepers club meeting, where I learned of the Mecklenburg Beekeepers Bee School. I signed up the next day and began a journey that would take me from eager student to now having bees at both the museum and my house. My wife, Gabrielle, also became interested, and she has embraced our beekeeping adventure with enthusiasm, passion, and thirst for knowledge. I can’t explain the draw of the bees, but there is just something surreal, ethereal, and “Zen-like” when working the bee hives. The bees are gentle teachers and to watch them work, fly in and out of the hive, waggle, and build comb is nothing short of amazing! The honeybee that we work with are not native bees, but are a species of bee introduced from Europe. The European Honeybee (Apis mellifera) was introduced to the U.S.around 1622, over 400 years ago. We did have a native

6

honey bee that dates back about 14 million years ago, but went extinct. Yes, there was actually a native honey bee that dates back about 14 million years ago, but went extinct, but no one remembers that one, do they? Dubbed “white man’s fly’’ by the native Americans, the honeybee quickly spread and became naturalized throughout North America. They are a true eusocial insect, which means they have evolved to have a reproductive division of labor. A hive consists of a reproductive queen, non-reproductive workers (also female), and drones (males). The queen only leaves the hive when she emerges and flies out to mate, or when the hive swarms and she leaves with half the hive population. The workers, which are female, are responsible for making the hive “tick” and they do all the dirty work! They nurse and feed young, clean cells, build comb, forage for pollen and nectar, and then convert the nectar to honey, as well as defending the hive using their well known stinging apparatus. Did you know that the stinger is a modified ovipositor, which is a structure used for laying eggs? This has been modified with a venom gland into a defensive structure used to protect the hive and defend the queen. Workers, being female, can also lay eggs when the hive is out of whack, but since they do not mate, their eggs are unfertilized and develop into drones. Drones only true function in this world is to mate. Otherwise, they hang around the hive, eat honey and pollen, and wait for the opportunity to mate. Some of them can’t even take care of themselves or feed themselves, but hey, spare me the “sounds like a typical male” jokes, okay? Honeybees are incredibly industrious and their role as pollina pollinators in our world are truly without equal. Approximately 60% or more of the food on our tables is pollinated by bees. Every time a bee leaves the hive, she visits 50-100 flowers. That is a lot of pollinating! Here are a few more interesting facts about bees: • It takes approximately 12,000 flowers to make one teaspoon of honey • A honeybee will only make 1/12 of a teaspoon in her lifetime • It takes 22,700 bees to make one jar of honey • Bees can recognize human faces in a process called “configular processing”, where they take different parts and

configure them together into one image. • A bee can fly around the world using one ounce of honey • A bee’s wings beat at an incredible 200 beats per second • Bees are the only insect that produces food eaten by humans • A vigorous queen can lay 1500-2000 eggs per day • There are about 40,000-60,000 bees in a colony • The venom in a bee’s sting may hold the key to curing HIV • Honeybees keep the temperature in the hive at a near constant 93 degrees year round, including times when the outside temperature is below freezing. Bees are an important part of our ecosystem and are facing increased threats to their survival every day. Pesticides broadly and widely sprayed on agricultural crops contain dangerous neonicotinoids. Concentrated spraying for mosquitoes by panic stricken agencies reacting to Zika and West Nile threats are problematic. Integrated pest management programs that take into account our honeybee populations and beekeeping operations can help assure our bees survive, but only if there is collaboration and communication. If the widespread and reckless use of these and other pesticides and herbicides continues, with no consideration for honeybees, native bees, and other pollinators, then we’re simply guaranteeing the continued decline and eventual extirpation of these beneficial and important insects. I guess when that occurs, crop yields will go way down by 60%-70% due to the loss of these insects, and then, and only then will some folks finally “get it”. I’d prefer not to go that route! Education and awareness can hopefully foster appreciation for these critters and hopefully, through this, we can put pressure on these chemical companies (Monsanto, anyone?) and the large chain grocery stores that support corporate farms that subscribe to heavy pesticide practices. Support your local organic farmers and buy local! Your local bees and beekeepers will thank you for it! Soon the bull will let the matador know when he’s had enough and then, when the bull is most dangerous to the man and the man most vulnerable to the beast, he gets close, and a curved sword is stuck right behind the neck into the heart for a seemingly humane kill. I guess that could be argued nowadays. These remarkable bulls are raised on ranches and go through vigorous workouts. They are all male, no females are ever killed in the ring. Tested strong blood lines are bred using the best prized st uds available. The prize fighting bulls are usually ready to go to battle in the 4 to 6-year age range and most will have never fought a human with the cape before entering the ring for the roughly 15 minute cavort. LOWCOUNTRY FALCONRY BY BRAD MCDONALD

I

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY JESSICA MILLER & BRUCE DUNBAR

was fortunate to be introduced to Bruce Dunbar by my friends at the Audubon Club on Fripp Island this past spring. Thank you Linda and Bob Freeman. I’ve always loved birds of prey, as these predators are at the apex of the bird world. These magnificent birds have graced the cover of DUDE many times in the past. Well, it seems Bruce has the same affinity for these marvels of nature as I do, so we got together for a cold one at Rosie O’Grady’s and I learned more about the art and sport of falconry. Falconry! Bruce is from Atlanta and got his biology degree from Georgia South Southern, just down the road in Statesboro. GO EAGLES! His girlfriend, Jessica Miller ironically is the Head Naturalist on Fripp Island. Sounds like two birds of feather to me DUDE. Georgia Southern is where Bruce got hooked on the mighty birds of prey. GSU apparently has quite the Wildlife Education Center with an obvious emphasis on avian predators. Roughly eight or so years ago, Georgia Southern adopted the great pre-kick off college football tradition that has an eagle fly into the stadium, landing on the 50 yard line on a trainer’s arm, much like the long-time tradition I got to witness in person for a couple years when I attended Auburn University. WAR DAMN EAGLE! It’s so cool to see that massive majestic raptor circle around the packed stadium and finally land on his trainer’s arm to claim his reward, surrounded by 85,000 anti-Alabama fans. I’m sure there’s not a better pre-football tradition anywhere in the United States of America. Falconry, the Sport of Kings, is the ancient art of hunting with trained birds of prey. Originating nearly 4,000 years ago in the Far East as a meant to provide food for the table, today the sport is a “Natural History Pursuit.” Falconry has allowed Bruce to gain an understanding of raptors and their role within the environment as apex predators.

14

There is an ART and a SPORT to falconry. Training the wild flying predator is an art. After much intensive training, the bird can be commanded to pounce on its target. A bird-dog is the predator’s “wingman,” who points out the prey and guards the falcon that has the quarry clutched in its talons, waiting on the falconer to retrieve, then the bird is usually rewarded with fresh, raw fowl. Once trained, the art of exhibiting these amazing creatures to captivated audiences becomes quite an enthralling show. If you’re lucky enough to witness a falconry demonstration, you’ll be entranced by the artful grace of the raptor flying off to perch in a nearby tree, then being waved back to the trainer for its meaty prize. The SPORT of falconry is quite a bit different from the artful show or demon demonstration. It’s primitive hunting that dates-back centuries. Falconry hunting is weaponless. Well, you may want a pistol in case you’re charged by a feral hog while out in the field (hunting is an open-carry exception in SC—check it out DUDE). Bruce works for Layman & Hein Wildlife Consultants, a company owned by namesakes Steve Layman and Steve Hein. Bruce met Mr. Hein, master fal falconer down at Georgia Southern in the Wildlife Department and they have been associates ever-since. Steve has been an avid falconer for over 25 years now, and taught Bruce the sport of hunting birds without shotgun or bow. These days, they do some very VIP private falconry hunts at nearby Bray’s Island. DUDE, think about it. The sport of kings right here in the Lowcountry! Outings are typically a half-day, either a morning or afternoon hunt. A typi typical hunt provides participants the opportunity to witness the distinct hunting styles of three birds of prey as the Peregrine Falcon (the fastest animal in the world), Northern Goshawk (northern forest hawk known for flying down large game birds) and Harris Hawk (a pack-hunting desert bird from the southwest, arguably the most intelligent bird of prey around) pursue

three different types of quarry. It’s simply amazing to watch as a DUDE, aka Bruce Dunbar, General Falconer, releases the falcon and it immediately disappears high into the sky. Bruce states, “You know he’s up there, but many times you can’t even see him! Their eyesight is nothing short of amazing—they can spot another bird flying up from a field as far as 3 miles away!” Once the Master Falconer waves, signaling that a game bird has been pointed by the bird-dog, the well-trained falcon attacks like a dive-bomber at speeds that exceed 200 mph! DUDE, that’s like NA-SCAR’s Dale Junior barreling down the backstretch at Daytona! I was fascinated when Bruce said, “You can actually hear the bird cutting through the air before blasting its target with a deadly blow!” “It’s more like a knockknock out punch with one deadly, taloned foot.” He’s actually seen game birds beheaded by screaming, diving falcons! This is Mother Nature in the raw, so it’s definitely not for the more sensitive. Falconry hunts conclude with the raptor killing the target game bird and then pouncing on it, catching it in razor sharp claws, then astonishingly allowing a much bigger birddog to come in and sit beside the bird with it’s prey, patiently waiting on the falconer to come collect. The well trained dogs are amazing as they are the ones that point the target quarry out, all the while pro-

tecting from other outside potential predators like eagles and red-tail hawks. AWESOME STUFF DUDE! Besides falcons, Bruce often also uses a Red-tail Hawk for his falconry hunts and demonstrations. He explains that these raptors are similar, yet distinctly different. An out-of-sight falcon orbits high, waiting to descend hell-bent out of nowhere, to bust on its prey, while a more powerful red-tail hawk will simply hover overhead or perch in a nearby tree. With the falcon, the Master Falconer signals via a wave, that the dog is about to spring some birds, the red-tail hawk follows overhead in the trees and as the falconer and compa company walk through the woods, they are pretty much ready to pounce on an unsuspecting game bird or ground varmint (like a squirrel) that is stirred up. Those scurrying little varmints are about to get a rude surprise. If you are interested in seeing some of these awesome birds of prey, then make sure you join us at Santa Elena History Museum’s upcoming Lowcountry Fair this November 18th (Saturday) at Cotton Hall Plantation. (See ad this issue for more information.) If you would like to contact Layman & Hein Wildlife Consultants to find out more about falconry hunts, demonstrations and other wildlife services, contact Adam Hein at heinadam.c@gmail.com.

meets LIEUTENANT PAUL GRASSEY USAAF & visits THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE MIGHTY EIGHTH AIR FORCE [ BY BRAD MCDONALD ]

love networking and meeting people that introduce me to new intriguing people. I re re- states, “That’s nonsense. I’m an instrument pilot, I only have to see as far as the instrument panel!” DUDE, the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force is magnificent in every way. We were cently spent some time with Caroline Kennedy the president of the Low Country Civil War cordially welcomed by the receptionist and she told us that Mr. Grassey is over there and he’s been Round Table and she told me that there was this DUDE that I simply had to meet. His name is Paul Grassey and he can often be found at the National Museum of the waiting on you two. Military DUDES are never late and we were actually early. Lieutenant Paul Grassey USAAF is a stately proper man. He welcomed us and escorted Mighty 8th Air Force in Savannah (Pooler), Georgia. She us in to the private meeting room. There we exchanged pleasantries gave me his number, so I gave him a call and what a call and got to know each other briefly, then we were off on our very special it was! VIP tour of the National Museum of the Mighty 8th Air Force. It turns out Paul is a 94 year old whippersnapper docent that does Paul has been giving tours at the museum for every one of its 20 tours at the National Museum of the Mighty 8th Air Force. He asked me years of existence. The Mighty 8th just earlier this year celebrated its if I’d ever been on a tour before and I had not, so later that week, I gath75th anniversary and Lieutenant Grassey was actually a member of ered up my wingman, Lieutenant Colonel Bob Freeman USA (Retired), the 446th Bombing Group. When he began at the Museum 20 years aerial observer in ‘Nam and aviation junkie and we soldiered on down I-95 to the Pooler, Georgia Exit 102. Many of you who’ve traveled down I-95 South have surely seen ago there were 90 volunteers and 60 of them were veterans of the Mighty Eighth. Today there are 90 volunteers and he is the last one standing.. this place off to the left with the many vintage war planes out front. The entrance is a huge rotunda filled with great air plane models, various statues and plaques My wingman, Lieutenant Colonel, Bob Freeman USA (Retired), learned to fly in a World War II vintage airplane. He knew that when he was shipped out on his first tour to Vietnam that he be flying commemorating some very special DUDES. The museum’s rotunda is named after, Major General in combat in a little bitty observation aircraft and his main concern was basically, just to know how to Lewis Elton “Lew” Lyle and is quite the auspicious entrance to this magnificent place. Paul let us stay alive. The Army had to turn Bob down as a pilot because he could not see well. Bob humorously know that Lew actually led 76 missions from England to Germany in his B-17H bomber as com

mander of the 303rd and 379th Bomb Groups and was miraculously never hit. Some of the other American heroes memoralized in the rotunda are Lieutenant General E.G. “Buck” Shuler Jr. who was the Commander of the Mighty 8th during Dessert Storm (Tarheel from Raleigh, NC and went to Orangeburg High School in SC), General Carl A. Tooey Spaatz who was Allied Commander of all air forces in Europe during World War II and my personal favorite, General James Harold “Jimmy” Doolittle, famous leader of the April, 1942, Doolittle Raid on Tokyo when US B-25B bombers took off from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet to drop the first bombs on Japan after Pearl Harbor. General Doolittle received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic leadership of this beyond-brave raid that boosted every American’s morale. Believe me when I say this museum has it all. A great quaint film room sets the stage for the entire tour. There you watch some awesome real war footage that gives you a sense of the world wide battle the Allied air forces faced in World War II. There are almost endless displays of real war memorabilia, flags, guns, uniforms, dis displays, commemorative plaques and planes...YES, PLANES! As Paul weaved us through the enthralling maze, we entered a corrugated metal Quonset hut festooned with maps and aerial photos, as if we were aircrew-members receiving our pre-mission briefing. Then we were escorted into the multimedia theater where you get an “al-most-too-realistic”, says Bob, panoramic view of an actual WWII bombing run, with exploding antiaircraft flack, bomb bay doors opening, flight and battle noise and even slipstream wind! Exhilarating, at the very least. After that treat, we rounded the corner and there it sat...A completely restored vintage B-17 Bomber. What a bright, magnificently silvery sight DUDE! Paul then spoke in detail about all aircraft involved in WWII. The man has a seemingly infinite amount of knowledge of what we had and what we were up against. The RAF Royal Air Force started out with the Hawker Hurricane fighter and it was pretty much bested by what Germany had at the time (Messerschmitt Bf 109) but when the Brits introduced the Supermarine Spitfire with its distinctive elliptical wings, it was arguably one of the best pure fighters designed. It helped to escort the massive Allied bomber fleets. Earlier, definitely a game-changer during the Battle of Britain in the late summer of 1940 when Brits were battling it out with Nazi Germany’s air force, better known as the Luftwaffe. We Americans brought a couple fighters to the theatre—the Brewster F2A Buffaloes and the P-47 Thunderbolts. The Thunderbolts turned out to be quite the tank busters with 5” rockets, bagging in excess of over 800 tanks. Interesting that the name Thunderbolt carried over to the A-10 “Warthog” which has proved to be quite the modern-day tank buster itself with its massive 30mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon encased in titanium armor. Once Uncle Sam introduced the North American Aviation P-51 Mustangs to the theatre, well, it simply was a game-changer that had a lot to do with the momentum shifting to the Allies’ favor. Super-fast and maneuverable with its powerful Merlin Rolls Royce engine, and ability to escort

MBER 1

bomber formations all the way into Germany (Up to 8 hours), the Mustang is credited with taking out an estimated 12,000+ German airmen. Gotta love the names of those fighter planes DUDE! The fighters escorted the big boys and those bombers were much slower. We started out with the sluggish slow turning Lockheed Martin P-38 Lightning which was a fighter/bomber that could carry two 1,000 pounders. Then came along Boeing’s B-17 Flying Fortress and with a range of 2,000 miles and a speed of 250 mph. A big step ahead of the P38’s as it had a bomb payload of 4,800 pounds of bombs. The B-17 dropped an estimated 640,000 tons of bombs on German targets. WOW DUDE! Soon after that, we introduced Hitler to the Consolidated Aircraft B-24 Liberator heavy bomber. This was the aircraft that Paul piloted and flew 13 bombing missions in to Germany. It couldn’t fly as high as the B-17, how however it could fly faster, longer and carry a heavier payload. Paul proudly stated, “We could carry and deliver eight 1,000 pounders!” To say Paul and his fellow airmen were fearless is an understate understatement, flying twelve-and-a-half-hours from Goose Bay, Labrador, to Germany and back. Thank you and your fellow airmen for y’all’s service sir! Badasses DUDE! Well, Bob and I were like two kids in a candy shop by now, so Paul walked us into the elaborate gift shop. You name it, they got it, for Mighty 8th memorabilia. Paul being the smooth operator that he is, came up to Bob and me and said, “Hey, y’all want to buy one of my books?” Ah, yeah, how could we not! After we purchased our per personal copies of “IT’S CHARACTER THAT COUNTS” by Paul C. Grassey, he generously and personally signed each of our copies. Mine reads, To Brad “DUDE” Great being with you and Bob. Thank you for joining me. Paul Grassey B-24 Pilot. Paul’s book is definitely a good read and you can learn of his six pillars of character. Every American citizen should live by these pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring & Citizenship. How could this visit get any better? Well it did, when Paul says, “Let’s go over to the cafeteria and have some lunch. My wife should be there by now!” Yeah, the National Museum of the Mighty 8th Army Corps Air Force has a British pub-like cafeteria. A fine delectable meat and three lunch was the perfect way to finish off our great personal tour. Not to mention we got to meet the elegant Mrs. Paul Grassey. (God bless her for putting up with this quick witted friendly great American hero-LOL.) Paul & Nancy had to run. However Bob and I could not pass up walking through the massive Mighty 8th library upstairs. If it happened in World War II, it is documented in a book in this beautifully laid out library. What a very special spectacular place to visit DUDE. Thank you Lieutenant Grassey, the pleasure was ours and we appreciate your service to our great country. DO THE

DUDE “When you’re near it, you’ll smell it!” Featuring the Lowcountry’s Finest Slow Cooked BBQ • PULLED PORK • SMOKED RIBS & BRISKET

BY BRAD MCDONALD Without a doubt one of our favorite places to water down our horses and get some grub is the enticing smelling Q ON BAY, located in beautiful downtown Beaufort on Bay Street. Chris Johnson and Jason Bailey have simply outdone themselves when they created this great locals favorite BBQ haven. Let’s do some Q DUDE. After we get our horses watered down and tied up, we settle in on the great outdoor patio overlooking Waterfront park and the Beaufort River. Ah yes DUDE, this is a sweet piece of the Lowcountry. First up always is a cold one and they have quite the revolving array of craft beers and domestic favorites of course. Though Q on Bay has some delectable DUDE worthy Brunswick Stew and Buffalo Chicken Dip, we always find ourselves asking what’s the Chef’s selection special Egg Roll. We’ve had many varieties and the most memorable ones are the ones made with some of their mouth watering pulled pork. Now hopefully your mama is not with you, but you’ll want to slap her anyway after diving in to a couple of these edible morsels. SON! Q on Bay is a great place for lunch if you just want to grab a quick cold one and a sandwich. Yeah they have burgers, Bay burger, Q burger (half pork/half beef), turkey burger and even a Portabella burger, but this DUDE would recommend something out of their great smoker. Smoked pulled pork or chicken sandwich will surely do the trick. My personal favorites are the smoked turkey melt and the Q Dip, which is some of their freshly smoked and sliced brisket on a hoagie roll. If you’re looking for something lighter you might want to try some of their fresh tacos and sliders. Of course they have fresh made daily salads for you hungry DUDES or you non carnivorous vegans. And of course they got great wings DUDE. Smoked, then fried is how they roll. You can get em plain, buffalo, hot, tiger, white tiger or any of their great BBQ sauces they have on every table. I’m a North Carolina BBQ DUDE and I like the vinegar red pepper sauce on all versions of wings, ribs and pulled pork. Now if you’re hungry from being out on the trial like we usually are then direct yourself to Steaks & Seafood and the great BBQ & Ribs entrees. There’s no way to really describe how good their Smoked Ribeye is. A fresh 14oz prime ribeye, garlic & jalapeño rubbed, then smoked to your specifications. Tender, juicy and unique. Not sure there’s another like this in Beaufort county. We always share and there’s never any left. Q on Bay’s Shrimp & Grits is worthy of your attention. Fresh wild caught shrimp on yellow stone ground grits with a nice an thick smokey gravy. Yeah, I’d like to order that for breakfast! LOL Q on Bay is really about great tasting BBQ, freshly smoked DUDE. So we usually end up ordering from the great BBQ entrees. The J&B Ribs are dry rubbed and slow smoked until they are juicy and tender. They really are quite spectacular without any sauce at all. They have great BBQ platters. Pulled pork, pulled chicken or that melt in your mouth brisket. All will make you happy, but be a DUDE and order THE BARNYARD. Pulled pork, pulled chicken, brisket and ribs all on one massive plate. DIG IN BOYS & GIRLS! It’s more better than good, I garonteee! Of course Q on Bay does great catering and you can also get your ribs, chicken and bbq to go if you’re tailgating or just want to eat out on the trail some where. Of course the holidays will soon be upon us and they simply have some of best turkeys you’ll every put in your mouth. Smoked and deep fried DUDE. Heck, they even have a smoked & deep fried version for you to take home to your holiday party or feast. Once you’re done enjoying your great meal, don’t rush off, take a deep breath, kick your heels up, have another cold one and enjoy the view. This is the Lowcountry DUDE! VOLUME 8 NUMBER 1

SHINING STARS SET THE EXAMPLE FOR THE YOUTH OF AMERICA

MISS VIRGINIA TEEN USA, MADISON WALKER & BROTHER BRYAN BY BRAD MCDONALD

F

or the past several years I have been concerned about the future of our great country. NO, children are not growing up like I used to and things are much different in many ways now. My main concern is the addicaddic tion I’m seeing that the youth and millennials have to their smart phones. Head down, totally absorbed, distracted beyond belief and worse of all, hardly any social skills and manners. Well, I can also say the same for some older folks but they are not being raised anymore and I kind of agree with my MOM that a lot of the blame lies on the parents for allowing the access and over exposure to these machines. Well my friends, my faith in our youth has been renewed when I got to meet Madison “Maddy” Walker, Miss Virginia Teen USA this past off season. Maddy is the stunningly beautiful daughter of Tina Woodruff Deni. Many Beaufort Old Schoolers may remember Tina, as she was a bartender at the very popular dance club, JP BOOGIES back in the 80’s. AH YES! We had some fun at that place as I was then, the publisher of a tabloid called FOCUS ON THE COAST. OK it was kind of a bar rag, but it made money and we had some serious fun. Tina and I became good friends via THE BOOGIEMAN, aka John McGowan, God rest his soul. She moved away and

I kinda lost touch with her until the great resource that is facebook hooked us back up together. Love it or hate it, facebook has allowed me to stay in touch with many old friends I most likely would have never heard from or seen ever again. As we followed each other and caught up on things, I realized that my friend Tina was all grown up and a proud Mama. I saw where Tina and Maddy were going to be in Beaufort several months ago and I asked her if we could get together and say hello. We met one evening on the back porch of Q on Bay for some great BBQ with a spectacular view of the Woods Memorial swinging bridge. Ah yes! Waterfront Park in downtown Beaufort is a cool place to hang out. I recognized Tina’s great smile immediately and also saw the resemblance of her in her gorgeous daughter’s face. After letting our great photographer friend, Eric Smith with Captured Moments photography take a couple shots for us, we sat down and got to know this amazing young lady. Please enjoy and appreciate her story. Madison Walker “Maddy” is actually a twin and her brother is Bryan, who is challenged through some Down Syndrome characteristics. They are truly millennial born in February of 2000. This amazing young lady sets a great example for the youth of America to follow. Since she has been selected

as Miss Virginia Teen USA, she has been a shinning example of how a person should carry themselves, as well as represent their state. She has been involved in various fund raising projects, Capes for A Cause and Best Buddies during her reign. The Tiny Superheroes, Capes for A Cause was a promotion to raise funds and actually make capes for children with disabilities Maddy commented that she loves to be involved with Special Needs promotions. “It’s so nice to see the smiles on their faces and let them know that there is someone out there that cares!” It was this great effort that won Maddy the Champions for A Cause Award during the Miss Virginia Teen USA pageant. Through her involvement with Best Buddies, thousands of people with intellectual and physical disabilities have successfully moved from segregation and desolation to a new acceptance in their family and community. In turn, Best Buddies has created a new spirit of public service for thousands of middle school, high school and college volunteers that will last a lifetime. Maddy set up a fund raising site for Best Buddies in her reign as Miss Virginia Teen USA and as of the time of me writing this article she has crossed the $6,000.00 mark. Maddy won the grand prize of being invited to a Best Buddies Mother’s Day celebration out in Los Angeles where her and Bryan got to meet Jane Seymour and Cindy Crawford. Nice Job Maddy! It was nice to hear the care and love she has for her brother Bryan who loves baseball, animals and playing his rock band video game pretending he’s his favorite musician, Michael Jackson. She is very proud of her brother and he gleefully attends many of her public outings. Bryan declares, “She’s a beautiful part of my life!” in a recent local news story. It’s pretty obvious they love being with each other and joking around. “He’s my inspiration and best friend!”, proudly exclaims Bryan’s sister. They are both Juniors and Cox High School in Virginia Beach. Maddy is a very outgoing young lady that is involved in cheerleading and lacrosse, as well as being involved in many motivational activities involved with her title. Madison Walker you are truly and inspiration and we’re glad to be one of your many supporters. Keep up the great work and you can rest assured we’ll be tuning in some time in July when the Miss Teen USA pageant will be held. GOOD LUCK! It was a pleasure to meet you and I know your parents are proud of you and your brother.

COOKING

STYLE! SUMMER/FALL VEGGIE TIPS

Many of us country folks love growing and cooking our own fresh vegetables in the summer and fall. A lot of times we get caught up in preparing those veggies the same way time and time again. This latest DUDE RIDE we wanted to share with y’all a few ways to change it up a bit, so try these new ways to prepare your fresh out of the garden veggies and after you try ‘em, don’t slap your mama too hard. GRILLED ZUCCHINI & YELLOW SQUASH TRIFLE By Chef Michael Pressley (Owner of Rosie O’Grady’s Beaufort) Goes great with Steak and baked potato! Cut several large zucchini & yellow squash lengthwise at about 1/4 inch, or a little thicker and marinade in “mixture” for a couple hours. Then, on a hot grill, grill for about 2.5 minutes, or a little longer, on each side, noticing the heavy grill marks on each side. After grilling, layer the cooked squash in a casserole dish, clear or not doesn’t matter, and drizzle with your leftover marinade as wet as you like, top with some bread crumbs and bake for about 25 minutes @ 325...and voila...you’re going to love it! “Marinade mixture”; 1 cup virgin olive oil, 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, tablespoon of brandy, tablespoon of minced garlic, squeeze of 1/2 of lemon, and finely minced onion (to taste, don’t need much). Whisk to emulsify, then pour over cut squash. Let marinade stand with squash for at least an hour. BAKED WHOLE TOMATO STUFFED WITH SPINACH SOUFFLÉ Actually size does not matter in this recipe DUDE! Just get at least Roma sized tomatoes and cut the tops out of them With a spoon or small mellon baller, scrap out the inside meat of your tomatoes Make a minimal slice off the bottom so it can sit up right Stuff to the level top with defrosted Stouffer’s Spinach Soufflé Baked for at least 30 min at 350, depending on size of tomatoes and poof level of soufflé During the last 10 minutes, top with freshly grat grated parmesan or mozzarella cheese and BOOM! Now you have a not only delicious fresh veggie that goes with anything, you also have something that looks awesome on your plate DUDE. 30

WHOLE BAKED VIDALIA ONION Definitely one of my summertime favorites and it goes with anything. Skin and cut the top off of the onion Core out at least half dollar size with spoon or mellon baller Insert one beef bouillon cube (or use chicken base) Pack the remaining space with real butter (garlic, parsley compound butter is best) Place in a appropriately size ramekin and fill half way up with white wine Top tightly with tin foil and baked 350 for an hour With 10 minutes left, take out and top with gorgonzola cheese and place back in oven uncovered. Words can not describe how delectable this fresh VIdalia onion is DUDE. CORN PIE We love steaming whole silver queen corn on the cob in the husk (garlic salt, chili powder and butter) but it’s nice to try something a bit different every once in a while. This is one my MOM taught me and it’s tried a true DUDE. Get a cup and a half (12oz) of fresh cut off the cob corn If you want to cheat you can use a can of Shoe Peg Corn 2 eggs, 3 tablespoons of butter, 1/2 cup of milk and handful of grated parmesan cheese Combine all ingredients and put in casserole dish, I use my corning ware Bake a 350 for an hour and take out and put cheese on top for last 10 minutes. Looks and good as it smells. I’m thinking it’s more like a souffle than pie but not matter what you call it, after a couple servings you’ll be trying to catch your mama to slap her again DUDE!

ROASTED ASPARAGUS

MOM’s COLD CUCUMBER SOUP

Asparagus is definitely one of my favorite veggie, however many times I’ve order them in a restaurant and they are simply ruined and cooked to death. Get your fresh asparagus wash and snap off bottoms of stalks Rub them liberally with some fine virgin olive oil and sprinkle with kosher coarse salt Place them on a cook sheet where they are not touchin each other Cook in a blazing hot 500 degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes. The extreme heat gives them and amazing deep sear that has a very flavorful crisp tender texture. If you feel like gettin a bit fancy, pour some Knorr’s hollandaise sauce over them and serve immediately. Goodness me DUDE, my mouth is watering just thinking about them. There will not be any for left overs!

This is a super easy, great refreshing cold soup recipe. • 1 Can Cream of Celery Soup • 1 Cucumber large (peeled and seeded) • 1 Can Chicken Stock • Fresh dill and parsley Salt and Fresh Cracked Black Peppercorns to taste Make this in your blender or food processor. Good at room temperature but much better chilled.

GARLIC ROSEMARY POTATO WEDGES

By Chef “Wild Bill” West aka William Triebold’s The Complete Electric Smoker Cookbook, ROCKRIDGE PRESS • 4 to 6 large russet potatoes, cut into wedges • 1⁄4 cup olive oil 2 garlic cloves, minced • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary leaves, or 1 tablespoon dried rosemary • 2 teaspoons salt • teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon onion powder 1. Preheat the smoker to 250°F with the maple or pecan wood. 2. In a large bowl, toss the potatoes with the olive oil to coat them well. 3. In a small bowl, stir together the garlic, rosemary, salt, pepper, sugar, and onion powder. Sprinkle this mixture on all sides of the potato wedges. Transfer the seasoned wedges to a grill pan and put it into the smoker. 4. Cook for about 11⁄2 hours until a fork cuts through the wedges easily.

SAVANNAH CIVIC CENTER JOHNNY MERCER THEATRE Sunday, November 5 THE BEACH BOYS

This past Spring we lost one of our DUDE HALL of FAMERS FAMERS, Sir Roger Moore better know to many as BOND, JAMES BOND BOND. Roger starred as James Bond 007 in seven different bond movies, including one of my favorites, LIVE AND LET DIE. Those other Bond flicks; The Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy and a View to a Kill. Queen Elizabeth II knighted Roger in 2003 for his exemplary services to charities. In 2007 he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and he was inducted in to the DUDE HALL of FAME in the Winter of 2014. Thankfully we will always have his great Bond movies to enjoy his amazing talent. GOD SPEED COMMANDER!

THE ROYAL TERN (Thalasseus maximus) The genus name is from Ancient Greek word meaning “fisherman.” They usually feed within 100 meters off shore and divebomb on large schools of fish from 30 feet in the air. They nest on isolated beaches and their eggs incubate and hatch in 25-39 days. This shot of Royal Tern nesting was made in June, 2016 on a tour at Crab Bank, a seabird rookery in the Charleston Harbor. I was sitting with a small group of guests, on anchor in my 19’ Carolina Skiff. We watched the birds coming into the rookery with food for their family. Once the incoming birds locate their partner, the feedings happen in a literal heart beat to keep other marauding birds from snatching their hard earned catch. Dear Harold, I called a buddy of mine the other evening and asked him if he wanted to go fishing. He replied that he was working on a project involving the aqua-thermal treatment of ceramics, aluminum and steel, in a highly constrained environment. I was quite impressed. Upon further inquiry, however, I found out he was washing the dinner dishes under his wife’s supervision. Signed, I Mostly Worry How I Perceive Precious Eternal Delight

Dear SWHTWWTH,NWWAS If your 70 or 80 walking around with a smoking hot young lady, who cares if you can hear or not? Chances are you got something she likes........ MONEY $$$! HAROLD

Dear ILTL, Laughter is truly the best medicine for what ails you. Try and find some everyday. It’s out there, sometimes you just have to look for it DUDE! HAROLD

Dear OG, I was always told to remember, don’t make old people mad. They don’t like being old in the first place and it doesn’t take much to tick them off. VIVA LA GEEZERS! HAROLD

Dear IMWHIPPED, Sounds like your buddy is whipped as well, but helping doing the dishes should not keep a DUDE from trying to catch me a few of my friends with a broken back top water repala. AND remember, IF MAMA AIN’T HAPPY, AIN’T NOBODY HAPPY DUDE! HAROLD

Dear Harold, I’ve always thought Red Skelton was one of the funniest DUDES of all time. He and Rodney Danger Dangerfield crack me up when they are talking about their marriages. Here’s a some of my favorites from his Recipes For The Perfect Marriage; 1. Two times a week we go to a nice restaurant, have a little beverage, good food and companionship. She goes on Tuesdays; I go on Fridays. 2. We also sleep in separate beds. Hers is in California , and mine is in Texas . 3. I take my wife everywhere....but she keeps finding her way back. 4. I asked my wife where she wanted to go for our anniversary. “Somewhere I haven’t been in a long time!” she said. So I suggested the kitchen. 5. We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops. 6. She has an electric blender, electric toaster and electric bread maker. She said “There are too many gadgets, and no place to sit down!”, So I bought her an electric chair. 7. My wife told me the car wasn’t running well because there was water in the carburetor. I asked where the car was. She told me, “In the lake.” 8. She got a mud pack, and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off. 9. She ran after the garbage truck, yelling, “Am I too late for the garbage?” The driver said, “No, jump in!” 10. Remember: Marriage is the number one cause of divorce. 11. I married Miss Right. I just didn’t know her first name was Always. 12. I haven’t spoken to my wife in 18 months.

Dear Harold, A man was telling his neighbor, “I just bought a new hearing aid. It cost me four thousand dollars, but it’s state of the art. It’s perfect and works great.” “Really,” answered the neighbor. “What kind is it?” He replied, “Twelve thirty.” Signed, Say What DUDE? Dear SWD? Sometimes hearing can be a selective thing, especially when talking to a nagging woman. I’ve always thought it was better to listen before you speak and I’ve certainly learned more by listening. AND you humans thought fish can’t hear. HAROLD Dear Harold, There was this 80 year-old man and he went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later, the doctor saw him walking down the street with a gor gorgeous young smoking hot woman on his arm. A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to him and said, “You’re really doing great, aren’t you?” He replied, “Just doing what you said, Doc: Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.’’ The doctor said, “I didn’t

Dear Harold, An old geezer became very bored in retirement and decided to open a medical clinic. He put a sign up outside that said: “Dr. Geezer’s clinic. Get your treatment for $500, if not cured, get back $1,000.” Doctor “Young,” who was positive that this old geezer didn’t know beans about medicine, thought this would be a great opportunity to get $$. So he went to Dr. Geezer’s clinic. Dr. Young: “Dr. Geezer, I have lost all taste in my mouth. Can you please help me?” Dr. Geezer: “Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in Dr. Young’s mouth.” Dr. Young: Aaagh!! “This is Gasoline!” Dr. Geezer: “Congratulations! You’ve got your taste back. That will be $500.” Dr. Young gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days figuring to recover his money. Dr. Young: “I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything.” Dr. Geezer: “Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient’s mouth.” Dr. Young: “Oh, no you don’t, that is gasoline!” Dr. Geezer: “Congratulations! You’ve got your memory back. That will be $500.” Dr. Young (after having lost $1000) leaves angrily and comes back after several more days. Dr. Young: “My eyesight has become weak, I can hardly see anything!” Dr. Geezer: “Well, I don’t have any medicine for that so, “Here’s your $1000 back” (giving him a $10 bill). Dr. Young: “But this is only $10!” Dr. Geezer: “Congratulations! You got your vision back! That will be $500.” Dr. Young leaves mad and slams the door with

Dear Harold, After a tiring day, a commuter settled down in his seat and closed his eyes. As the train rolled out of the station, a woman sitting next to him pulled out her cell phone. She started talking in a loud voice: “Hi sweetheart, It’s Louise, I’m on the train.” “Yes! I know it’s the six thirty and not the four thirty, but I had a long meeting. NO!, honey, not with that Andy from the accounting office. It was with the boss. NO! sweetheart, you’re the only one in my life. Yes, I’m sure, cross my heart and hope to die!” Fifteen minutes later, she was still talking LOUDLY. When the man sitting next to her had enough, he leaned over and said into the phone, “Louise, hang up the phone and come back to bed.” Louise doesn’t use her cell phone in public any more. Signed, Totally Ruin A Person’s Serenity Harassing Unruly Telephoner Dear TRAPSHUT, Thank GOD I live in a pond and don’t have to listen to rude people talking loudly on their phones in public. Rude self-centered people are so, ill-mannered, impolite, discourteous, uncivil, illl-behaved, impertinent, insolent, impudent, disrespectful, churlish, brusque, offensive, insulting derogatory, disparaging, tactless, crude, lewd and quite frankly indelicately indecorous.
