oung footballers from Bradley Stoke Youth FC (BSYFC) were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part as one of the seven teams in the team parade at The FA Community Shield 2017 supported by McDonald’s, on Sunday 6th August. The BSYFC players formed a guard of honour around the pitch at Wembley Stadium before Emirates FA Cup Winners Arsenal won 4-1 on penalties against Premier League champions Chelsea, in front of over 83,000 fans. A local “grassroots” team, BSYFC secured their place on the pitch via local McDonald’s franchisee Mike Guerin, who has supported the club for eleven years as part of the McDonald’s Club Twinning Programme. The programme began in 2008 and has already seen

over 1,000 grassroots clubs across the country twinned with McDonald’s restaurants. This is just one of the many ways in which McDonald’s supports accredited grassroots clubs through their Community Partnership with The FA, helping to raise the standards of the grassroots game for all. Grassroots clubs across the country who are twinned with their local McDonald’s restaurants receive support through the provision of kit and equipment, business advice and assistance with hosting community football events. Emma Brown, Team Manager at Bradley Stoke Youth FC, said: “We were extremely grateful to receive the chance to walk out at a sold-out Wembley Stadium. This opportunity comes around once-in-a-lifetime and the kids haven’t stopped talking about it

Reflexology now offered at Equilibrium

Youngsters and adult volunteers honoured at Scout Group AGM

By Brian Pountney of Equilibrium MST AS A THERAPIST working in Bradley Stoke for the last five years, I have been offering help treating a variety of problems including: muscle/joint pains, sciatica, headaches/migraines, insomnia, period pains, IBS and colic. These can all be treated with musculo-skeletal therapy (MST), which is a combination of massage and joint mobilisation (not manipulation) and/or Cranio-sacral therapy. In June 2017, my wife Barbara decided to put her knowledge and skills into the practice and, since then, has been providing two complementary therapies: Reiki and Indian Head Massage (IHM). Barbara is very pleased to announce that from September she will also be providing Reflexology! As there is usually more than one reason for a problem (for example, an emotional or stress

related factor), we will now be able to use a more holistic approach to our treatments with these extra therapies. Whether in isolation/combination with MST, this will give us the option of tailoring any treatment to your personal needs. Or, if you just want pampering or to treat a friend, Reiki, IHM and Reflexology are all great relaxing therapies (£5.00 off first treatment with our BSJ advert). Gift vouchers available! ● See our advert on page 12.

PARENTS, youngsters and adult volunteers gathered at Brook Way Activity Centre on Wednesday 12th July for the AGM and open evening of the 1st Bradley Stoke Scout Group. As well as the usual elements of the AGM, bringing together the Scout Council to agree the annual reports and nominate members of the executive, the group also celebrated quite a few awards, as shown in the ’roll of honour’ below. The Bronze, Silver and Gold Chief Scout Awards are the highest badges in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts respectively and represent work undertaken

during the youngsters’ time in each section. There was also an emotional award to Calum Morris, who received a personal award from the Chief Scout (Bear Grylls) after undergoing his fourth open heart surgery. His dad, John Morris, also received an award, recognizing his commitment as a Cub leader whilst also looking after his family. The evening was rounded off with a family BBQ giving parents and their children the opportunity to mix with those in the other sections, see what they do and meet the leaders and supporters of the group.

Brook Court news from Grahame Holloway

A

We’ll NEVER increase your membership!

lthough the Bradley Stoke Journal may have taken a short summer recess, the same cannot be said of Brook Court! One of McCarthy & Stone’s largest developments, with fifty apartments, it offers an active social life for those seeking one but, at the same time, can provide a quiet haven in one’s own apartment for those who seek otherwise. A monthly newsletter, sponsored by local businesses, keeps all residents aware of events and developments within the complex. However, the main event for residents has been the appointment of a new House Manager from the end of July. She is Louisa McLachlan who had been standing in as temporary House Manager since January 2017 but has now been made a permanent member of staff. Louisa has many years of experience, both as a secretary/PA and within property management for leading Bristol letting agents. Meanwhile, social activities continued with a few additions to the normal list. These have included a paella party during July with the garden transformed into ‘little Spain’ complete with tapas. Also in July, we had a strawberry and cream tea to capture the aura of the Wimbledon finals, followed by a summer garden lunch party in August – all these

taking place within a garden ablaze with colour – thanks to our small group of volunteer gardeners who add flowers to the formal garden managed by the landlord. However, not all events are held within Brook Court as we also support some local eateries for those who enjoy the occasional meal out. In July, it was strictly oriental with a visit to Beijing, whereas our August jaunt was very much closer – next door to the Three Brooks! Our ventures also take us across the border – into Wales! In August, a party had a tour of the Royal Mint, whilst in early September a visit to a Welsh whiskey distillery is on the cards. Hopefully, with a few souvenirs! As I have said before, Brook Court can offer an active social life or a quiet one. McCarthy & Stone are currently building other developments in the area so more will be able to enjoy the retirement lifestyle that suits them.

‘Record breaking’ GCSE results at BSCS

S

tudents at Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) have been celebrating a ‘record breaking’ set of GCSE results which this year included the best set of English and maths grades in the school’s history. This is despite the introduction of the new GCSEs, which are significantly more difficult than in previous years. This measures how well pupils have achieved from their starting point when they entered secondary school. BSCS also reports that the performance of its vulnerable students has improved again this year, further narrowing the attainment gap. News Council apologises after traffic light snags leave drivers trapped for hours

A

“software problem” associated with new traffic lights being installed around the Aztec West Roundabout led to hundreds of motorists being trapped for hours in huge queues that formed during the evening peak on Wednesday 2nd August. Motorists attempting to exit the Aztec West Business Park reported having to wait for as long as two hours in tailbacks that had formed along the park’s internal roads. Despite traffic levels on the rest of the local road network being light, traffic signals controlling the flow of traffic out of the business park were changing to green for just a few seconds on each cycle. It was also reported that lights on a newly installed pedestrian crossing on the slip road to the northbound A38 were remaining on red for lengthy periods, despite there being no one waiting to cross. One Journal reader commented: “I work on Aztec West and have experienced the deterioration of the traffic management system. Last night reached a new low. In the morning I got to work in 20 minutes. Last night, having left work at 4.30pm, I finally got home at 7.45pm.” Speaking on Radio Bristol the following morning, South Gloucestershire Council’s head of transport and streetcare Mark King described the incident as

“unacceptable” and apologised to those who had been trapped. A council statement issued later put the blame on “a problem with the software that controls the lights”. In a recent update provided to the Journal, SGC has confirmed that the traffic signals on and around the Aztec West Roundabout “are now working as intended”. A spokesperson added: “We will continue to monitor the operation of the signals and we may carry out some minor adjustments to ensure that they work as effectively as possible for all users, and that our signals are in sync with those managed by Highways England.” “The pedestrian crossing lights on the A38 immediately north of the roundabout are working as intended. This is not a regular, stand-alone pedestrian crossing – these new crossings are part of a sequenced traffic signal system that includes a pedestrian crossing facility. The entire roundabout is in effect a series of signalised junctions and we have balanced priorities to aid movement of pedestrians.”

Comment

So, when WILL we see MetroBus services running in Bradley Stoke? There’s no official date, so Journal editor Stephen Horton is left to speculate…

B

y the time you read this, we will be into the third year of MetroBus roadworks in Bradley Stoke! When Alun Griffiths started their work in earnest on Monday 2nd September 2015, closing the Woodlands Lane junction for “an estimated 18 weeks”, we were told they planned to be out of Bradley Stoke and have the Stoke Gifford By-Pass completed by Christmas 2016. So much for optimism! With the traffic cones finally coming off most (but not all) of the new bus lanes, it’s not my intention to rake over all those old stories about “uncharted underground services” and “design changes”, but rather to consider when we might be able to actually use the promised new “high quality, fast and reliable” MetroBus services here in Bradley Stoke. Answering that question, however, has proved rather more difficult than you might have imaged. MetroBus says it is no longer prepared to supply an exact date and its latest public newsletter states simply “autumn 2017”, although it should be noted that enquiries have revealed that this date represents the earliest date that any of the three MetroBus routes across Greater Bristol should start, and does not necessarily apply to all of them. In practice, it is likely to relate only to the Ashton Vale to Temple Meads (AVTM) route. The key factors that need to be considered are: (1) Completion of the route infrastructure; (2) installation of the IT infrastructure; (3) appointment of a bus operator; and (4) ability and willingness of the appointed operator to commence services. A report to the West of England Joint Transport Board in March estimated that all construction on the North Fringe to Hengrove Package (NFHP) route, i.e. the one serving Bradley

MetroBus stop near Aldi

Stoke, would be completed by “autumn 2017”. The Journal is not aware of any official slippage on this date but it is noted that the Stoke Gifford By-Pass is now on the critical path, its projected completion date having slipped to “autumn 2017” from “summer 2017”. Similarly, work at the southern end of Bradley Stoke Way is now scheduled to finish in October 2017 (was given as May 2017 at the start of the year). All MetroBus stops will have one or more iPoints (these are combined information, route planning and ticketing machines). The date for the commencement of iPoint installation has been consistently given as August

2017, but we are now hearing of a change in manufacturer, meaning they will now not be piloted until the middle of October. Thorough testing will then be required before they are rolled out to the whole network over a number of months. The announcement of a MetroBus service operator has been delayed several times, most recently because of the mayoral and general elections. When an announcement was finally made in June 2017 it was revealed that First would be operating the AVTM route, but nothing was said about the other two routes. There have been continuous hints that the announcement of

an operator for the NFHP route is “due within a week or two”, but when pressed, a spokesperson recently told us: “We do not know the date.” Curiously (with no operator announced), an email verified as originating from MetroBus appeared on a local Facebook group page in June 2017 stating: “The operator running the [NFHP] service wants to run with gas hybrid vehicles from the start rather than using diesels. We are still waiting to hear when the buses will be ready. The lead time on hybrid vehicles is longer than on diesels, so it is likely to be January [2018].” Pressed for an update to include in this article, a MetroBus spokesperson said: “The [NFHP] start date will be dictated by how quickly the iPoints can be installed and how quickly the operator can take delivery of their vehicles. Realistically, this will probably now be early 2018. We will know more once the iPoint installation begins and the operator is announced.”

Bradley Stoke father pens book in memory of footballer son Ben Hiscox, 30, died in March 2015 from a head injury sustained playing in match for Stoke Gifford FC

A

grieving dad has written a book about the life of his deceased son, in the hope that he can be remembered for “the colourful character that he was” rather than for the tragic accident which led to his death. Clive Hiscox’s self-published book was released on 4th August, more than two years after his son Ben died after striking his head on the clubhouse wall during a match at the Trust Ground in North Road, Stoke Gifford. Although Ben had been raised at the Hiscox family home in Bradley Stoke, he had developed strong ties with the community of Stoke Gifford, initially (as a child) through helping to collect glasses at the former Parkway Tavern and later as a player with the local football team and drinker in the local pubs. As a result, he was well known and liked by people of all ages in “the village”. Ben began playing for Stoke Gifford at the age of 16, and went on to play for Bristol Manor Farm in a higher league for a number of years, but went back to playing for Stoke Gifford United to be with his friends. Hundreds attended Ben’s funeral, held at Westerleigh Crematorium on 15th April 2015. Following the service, everyone was invited to join the family at The Beaufort Arms in Stoke Gifford, where a crowd of well-wishers spilled out onto the pavement along North Road. Later that year, an apple blossom tree was planted in Ben’s memory on Stoke Gifford’s village green, along with an inscribed wooden bench. Explaining his motivation for writing the book, Clive says: “I felt I had to re-live many wonderful times spent in the company of such a lovable character, times I now consider

precious. The fact that so many others came forward to share their own memories convinced me to write this book.” He describes his book as “a true, honest, modern tale of an everyday family striving to enjoy and make the most out of life” and says his aim was to illustrate “how a fun-loving, life-loving individual was able to win the hearts of so many”. “Lots of people will have read the ‘tragic freak accident’ news headlines, but if they read this book, they will realise just what a colourful character Ben was, which will go some way to erasing that label.” Clive says his book has received many positive reviews since it was launched, including some written by people who didn’t know Ben, which he says is “very humbling”. On the recommendation of the coroner, who recorded a verdict of accidental death, adjustments have been made to the layout of the Trust Ground since Ben’s accident, allowing the football pitch to be shifted several metres

The changes at the ground have cost more than £6,000, a sum to which Clive and his daughter Rachel have contributed through sponsored participation in the Bristol 10k Run. Clive is keen to emphasise that he and his family are “100

percent behind” Stoke Gifford FC and that they have never wanted to see football stopped at the Trust Ground. It is the family’s wish that the football facilities at the Trust Ground site should be officially named the Ben Hiscox Memorial Ground and Clive says they have received positive feedback on this suggestion from the trust committee. The first game to be played on

the pitch since Ben’s accident is due to be take place on Saturday 2nd September and the Hiscox family is planning to be present to show their support for the club. Copies of Clive’s book ‘Our Ben and Us’, priced at £8, can be purchased from The Beaufort Arms in Stoke Gifford. It may also be ordered via Clive’s website www.clivehiscox.co.uk at a cost of £9.99 (including post and packing).

Council concedes to petitioners’ demands for bus lane review

A

Promise of new report and further consultation

C

ampaigners opposed to the construction of a new bus lane on Hatchet Road in Stoke Gifford say they are “delighted” to have succeeded in convincing South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) that it should review its previous decision to press ahead with the scheme despite widespread opposition within the local community. The proposed new southbound bus lane on Hatchet Road will form part of the Cribbs Patchway MetroBus Extension (CPME) scheme, which will link The Mall at Cribbs Causeway with Bristol Parkway Station and serve the new developments planned for the former Filton Airfield site. Local residents and councillors are opposed to the bus lane because it will require mature hedgerows and trees to be removed from both sides of Hatchet Road. They also claim it is a waste of money (costing £2m to reduce bus journey times by just 29 seconds, during the morning peak only) and say they are concerned that its construction will cause severe disruption to traffic in the area. Their preferred alternative is to review the number of bus stops on Hatchet Road and implement lay-bys at those that are deemed necessary. This, they claim, would facilitate better traffic flow for all road users. SGC’s own figures show that such a scheme would save over £1.25m and achieve improved bus journey time savings in comparison to the bus lane option. The decision to hold a review was reached following a debate at SGC’s Full Council on 19th July, which had been triggered after a petition against the bus lane passed the critical 2,500 mark. Around 20 members of the Hatchet Road Action Group attended the meeting, led by

Paul Tanner, who was given five minutes to introduce the petition prior to the debate. Three other action group members, Sue Bandcroft, Susan Kelly and James Buckingham, took the opportunity to speak during the ‘items from the public’ session at the start of the meeting.

Mr Tanner used part of his allotted time to show councillors an aerial video of the Hatchet Road route, which had been filmed using a drone. The first motion tabled during the ensuing debate came from Cllr Colin Hunt (Con) who proposed a motion asking transport officers to re-examine the scheme and “consider if it could be delivered a different way”, but adding that the previously agreed proposal for the Hatchet Road Bus Lane should be “the default position”. After further debate, councillors eventually agreed on an amended motion proposed by Cllr Pat Hockey (LibDem) which removed Cllr Hunt’s reference to a “default position” and added the promise of further public consultation. The agreed motion reads: “Council requests that transport officers re-examine plans for the route of the Metro Bus from the Hatchet Road Roundabout to Parkway Station, investigate whether the CPME Scheme can be delivered in a different way, and prepares a paper to bring to a public Cabinet meeting in the Autumn for this issue to be discussed further which will lead to these proposals going out for further consultation.” An SGC spokesperson said: “Since the 19th July Full Council meeting, officers have been undertaking a review of the Hatchet Road proposals as set

out in the motion and this is currently ongoing. We currently anticipate that we will present the results of the review in a report to the Cabinet meeting on 6th November 2017, in which case that report would be publicly available on the council’s website from 27th October.” “Timescales for public consultation, and any decisions following consultation, have not yet been confirmed.”

Sue Bandcroft: “We welcome the decision to review all the options again, including the Winterbourne Road option and the opportunity, if required, to be fully involved in the review process.”

Campaigners “delighted”

Paul Tanner said: “I’m delighted with the positive response made by Councillors at the July meeting. There was cross-party recognition of the importance of the consultation process and the strength of feeling locally with over 3,300 signatures of support for our petition. “ “We look forward to a positive outcome from the review and remain convinced that the evidence continues to provide overwhelming support for the lay-by option rather than having a bus lane on Hatchet Road.”

Lead petitioner Paul Tanner

“This is a real opportunity for South Gloucestershire Council to demonstrate that they are willing to work with residents and actually listening to the voice of the community.” The full text of campaigners’ speeches to the 19th July meeting may be viewed on the action group’s Facebook page: Hatchet Road 2016

Advertising Slide: Helping Bradley Stoke beat the ‘back to work blues’ • Annual leave all used up, save for a few days you’re keeping for Christmas - check! • The realisation that there are no more bank holidays left until Christmas - check! • Boss is back from holiday, goodbye long lunch breaks check!

W

hether the summer holiday you took in July feels like a lifetime ago, you’ve just got back from a week in the sun or you’re lucky enough to have teachers’ holidays, chances are you’ll be suffering from one or all of the above symptoms of the back to work blues! But September doesn’t have to be a struggle, by making a few little tweaks to your daily routine and taking advantage of one of the best new services to pop up in Bristol these last 12 months, you’ll barely notice those nights drawing in.

A local solution

Slide, Bristol’s smart bus, launched in our area in 2016 making the lives of local residents easier and their commutes that little bit more pleasant. ‘Richard Evans of Stoke Gifford is a convert; “Slide offers a really great service. Without it I would be using the bus or train to get into work, neither of which is a very attractive option because they’re either slow or, in the case of the train, drop me off about a mile from my office. With Slide it’s more or less door to door, so it’s streets ahead of public transport!” Slide’s better than the bus, there are no bus stops, instead when you book using the clever app, you’re allocated a pick up point just a short stroll from your door, and updates let you know when it’s going to arrive, so the days of waiting in the rain are numbered. Richard

says; “it’s reasonably priced, the drivers are always very friendly and the mobile app is really straightforward to use. I like the fact that you pay by card so there’s no fiddling around with cash and that the app keeps you up-to-date with your departure/ arrival times.”

A shared experience

Slide will cleverly group together local residents who book along a similar route and because, unlike a bus, it’s not stopping at bus stops every few yards, you’ll get to work in a fraction of the time, leaving you with more time to enjoy your morning. That’s enough time for a bit of morning exercise, extra time with the kids before school, or another couple of snoozes on the alarm! It’s not easy knowing you’re just about to embark on that big old slog up to Christmas, so what better time to kick off a new routine?

Exclusive offer As a reader of Bradley Stoke Journal, Slide would like to offer you a whole week of half price travel on Slide. That’s 50% off your ride to and from work every day. To claim just download the Slide app and enter the code ‘STOKE50’ when you book*. Find out more about Slide at www.slidebristol.com *Code is valid for 50% off on up to ten Slide trips. Travellers evicted from Stoke Gifford make short trip to Patchway

“Lock and chain cut”

On Wednesday 9th August, local residents reported that around 15 traveller caravans and associated vehicles had entered the site. A statement appearing later on the Stoke Gifford Parish Council website reported that access had been gained “by cutting a bollard lock and gate chain on the vehicular access gate on Hatchet Road opposite Meade Park”. It added: “It is anticipated that the travellers will be removed within seven days, but any resident concerns about the site should be reported to the police”. A South Gloucestershire council spokesperson was quoted as saying: “We are aware of the encampment and we have visited the site and we are currently in the process of organising the necessary welfare checks.” “We are working with partners at the police and parish council to negotiate with the families, in line with our standard procedures.” Hopes were raised when the parish council announced that a Section 77 notice had been served requiring the site to be vacated by 3pm on Friday, but the deadline came and went and more caravans arrived over the weekend. Local residents complained that vehicles had blocked paths

through the site, dogs were being allowed to roam free and youngsters riding motor bikes were causing a nuisance. With the number of caravans on the site having swelled to around 20 by Tuesday 15th August, and a second Section 77 notice having gone unheeded, it was announced that SGC was initiating proceedings at Bristol Magistrates Courts, with the aim of securing an eviction order by the following Friday. In a response emailed to a resident, parish council chair Ernie Brown wrote: “Like you, we are also very concerned over the state the site will be left in and what costs we will be left with.” “I have been on site several times trying to negotiate terms, resulting in being spat at, threatened and foul mouthed. There is no more that can be done and we now have to let the legal proceedings take their course.” A summons was duly issued by the magistrates’ court and served on the travellers on Wednesday 16th August. In the meantime, there were reports of two walkers being bitten by free-roaming dogs on the site and a hedge being set on fire.

Bailiffs called in

A few hours after the order had been issued by magistrates on Friday 18th August, a team of bailiffs moved onto the site to begin the eviction of what was, by then, an encampment of around 30 caravans. A number of police vehicles also attended, but officers said they were there only in a “standby” capacity and the eviction was reported to have proceeded in a “calm and organised” manner. With such a large number of caravans now on the move, the question was now: Where would they go next? A number made a

Unauthorised traveller encampment amongst woodland at Forty Acres

temporary stop along the verge of Brook Way in Bradley Stoke, but it wasn’t long before the answer was known as reports came in of traveller caravans entering Scott Park in Patchway. At this point, the story took an interesting twist when a council groundsman took a decision to entice the travellers away from the public park by unlocking the gate to a field at the nearby Tumps nature area. By the end of Friday, what appeared to be the very same 25 to 30

caravans that had earlier been camped at Stoke Gifford were pitched up at The Tumps. Asked about the unusual circumstances surrounding the travellers’ arrival on the field at The Tumps, a spokesperson said: “Patchway Town Council was not made aware of the eviction from Stoke Gifford and so was not prepared for the arrival of the travellers in Scott Park on the playing fields. The decision by our groundsman to ask the

he issue of unauthorised traveller encampments, last seen locally during 2014 and 2015 on two sites in Bradley Stoke, hit the headlines again during August when around 30 caravans pitched up on Forty Acres in Stoke Gifford. An area of rough grassland and scattered woodland, Forty Acres is located on the right side of Hatchet Road when travelling from Bradley Stoke to Stoke Gifford, on the opposite side of the road to Meade Park.

Both times the Department of Communities and Local Government believed current laws were adequate but disparities have been found in their applications across the country. With this in mind, I met with South Gloucestershire Council and the Police to highlight what could be done to resolve criminal incidents involving the traveller community. “ “I have received correspondence from many constituents on the wider issues associated with the traveller community and will look for solutions to them, whether that will be legislative action or looking to improve infrastructure within The Council Plan.”

August in the Three Brooks nature reserve By Sara Messenger, Three Brooks Nature Conservation Group

Swan ringing

Although we have in previous years wanted to ring our cygnets, we never managed to find a time when both the birds were present or the ringer’s first baby wasn’t making an appearance (welcome to young Freddie). So we were rather excited that this year it all seemed to be coming together, and mostly it did. The first flaw in our plan came when we discovered we were rather short on swan jackets, as it turned out that the three Robin had planned to borrow and the three Richard planned to borrow turned out to be the same three jackets! The second flaw was putting up a corral in knee-deep water. While the boys patiently waited for the birds to decide to all be in the corral at the same time, they

discovered that the silt at the bottom of the lake was less firm under foot than they thought and that they were now thigh-deep in water. It was at this point that the cry went up and we chose to just take the birds from the lake, only for the boys to discover that they were now stuck fast in the mud and, as their waders rapidly filled with cold water, they could only watch as three of the cygnets glided past. After that, everything went smoothly, the birds were remarkably unfazed by our attentions and the two adults and two cygnets were safely trussed up, checked over and weighed. Who knew that Ikea bags were perfect for this? (Although we’re hoping Gill remembered to wash it out before she used it

Swans and cygnets await the attention of the swan ringer

again.) None of the group has the required swan ringing licence, so that part of the evening was left to Richard, who works at WWT Slimbridge and wildlife expert and author Ed Drewitt. Richard also showed us how to determine which birds are male and which are female, which is a very hands on technique! As we’re very organised, the two males have their rings on their left legs and the two females on their right. The female cygnet has been named Lily, her name was chosen by young Olivia Hayes and the male cygnet has been named Angelo by our slightly older but no less charming Emma. I’d like to say “thank you” to everyone who helped out and to all the dog walkers who were happy to take the long way home to avoid stressing the birds while they were on land. Also to Les, who helped us try to persuade the other birds they too would like some bling.

No bread please!

Angelo was given his name because he is suffering from ‘angel wing’, a condition which mostly affects the left wing on young males and is usually caused by a poor bread-based diet. Angel wing starts with rapid growth of the wings, when the bone structure is not yet strong enough to support the weight of the new feather growth, which is heavy with blood. The wing feathers then start to fall outwards and end up growing out from the body rather than correctly folded onto the back. Angelo’s wing has the outer part of the wing twisted as well as the feathers, which means he may never be able to fly, while he is young. Unless he is attacked by a fox or a dog, this may not be too much of a problem, but when the time comes for him to fly the nest and he is unable to do so, it could prove fatal. Bradley Stoke in Bloom 20

can keep your files

By Sara Messenger of Bradley Stoke in Bloom (BSiB) We were again bowled over by the exceptionally high standard of the 14 gardens that entered our annual Best Front Garden (BFG) competition; I, personally, was as green as their immaculate lawns! Some were new and some were old favourites, some were large and some were small, but they were all amazing in their different ways. As the number and standard of gardens increases each year, so does the difficulty of choosing a winner, but it gives us very great pleasure to finally be able to announce our 2017 winners! The prizes were presented at the Bradley Stoke Carnival on Saturday 26th August. First prize was the BFG trophy, a gold medal engraved with the winner’s name, a £40 voucher donated by the Harvester Restaurant and a £30 garden voucher donated by Almondsbury Garden Centre. Second prize was an engraved glass trophy, a silver medal and a £20 garden voucher donated by Almondsbury Garden Centre. Third prize was an engraved glass trophy, a bronze medal and a £10 garden voucher donated by Almondsbury Garden Centre. The Facebook Favourite prize was a certificate and an engraved medal. All the runner ups also received a certificate and an engraved medal. Thank you to these companies, to Timpson’s for the large discount given on the trophy engraving and to Mayor Andy Ward for helping to hand out the prizes.

Ask the Doctor with Dr Sophie Kilmartin of Bradley Stoke Surgery Anaemia

A

naemia can be defined as a reduction in red cells numbers or oxygen carrying capacity. There are many causes of anaemia, and once a blood count shows the signs of low haemoglobin, the detective work begins. I like to divide causes up into categories to help my detective work. Firstly: reduced production of red blood cells due to lack of iron, vitamin B12 or folate, or problems with the bone marrow. Secondly: increased loss of the red blood cells with bleeding, enlarged spleen or conditions such as sickle cell anaemia. Once the detective work has found the cause, treatment can begin. The most common reason for anaemia is iron deficiency. It affects over a billion people worldwide and in the UK the British Medical Journal says that 3 percent of men and 8 percent of women have it. I

myself have had anaemia, and this is due in part to being a vegetarian since my early teens. The best source of iron is from red meat. A lot of people have cut back on red meat due to advice on diet for a healthy heart, however, like all things, moderation is required and red

meat is particularly important for children and pregnant women. Non-animal sources of iron include dried apricots and tofu but are hard to absorb, so a glass of orange juice alongside can help. Avoid taking tea or calcium products alongside. Unfortunately, high iron content in spinach is a myth, with people suggesting the initial research in the 1870s was out by one decimal point, others blame Popeye cartoons.

It can be hard to know if you are anaemic as it can creep up on you gradually. I have felt a bit breathless on exertion, a little more tired than usual and noted my hair being brittle when my haemoglobin was down. A simple blood test can find out, so if you are not sure then we would be happy to help find out if you are anaemic and then look for the underlying cause. The good news is that many types of anaemia can be treated and you will feel a lot better for it. www.bradleystokesurgery.nhs.uk

Tesco community team helps spruce up hall

S

taff from the Tesco Extra store in Bradley Stoke have joined local volunteers to spruce up a local church hall. Dawn Richards, community champion at the Tesco store, and some of her colleagues were part of a team of eight people who spent a week in mid-August decorating the interior of St Chad’s Church Hall in Rodway Road, Patchway. The hall is used by St Chad’s Pre-School during the day on weekdays and by various groups, including St John Ambulance Badgers, Rainbows, Brownies and dance groups, in the evenings and at weekends. Members of the church community had already completed some of the work themselves but called in Dawn and her team to give them a

helping hand. The work carried out included painting skirting boards, cupboards and walls. The Tesco team will be returning to St Chad’s in the near future to help enhance some of the pre-school’s outdoor facilities, including the sand pit and ‘muddy play’ area. Dawn and her team are always looking for new projects to get involved with. Anything which “helps the community” or is “for a good cause” will be considered. Anyone wishing to suggest a suitable community project should write to Dawn Richards at Tesco Extra, Bradley Stoke BS32 8EF or email bradleystoke@ eathappyproject.com Photo: Dawn Richards (right) with Phil Mayo (left), Helen Ford (kneeling) and Barry Morgan

Family celebrates completion of sensory garden for disabled son

A

Bradley Stoke couple have celebrated the completion of a sensory garden at their home, specially designed for their disabled son to enjoy, thanks to the support of friends and charitable organisations who raised over £3,000 to bring the project to fruition. Four-year-old Cameron Alderman, who was born deafblind, lives with his mum Carla Golledge, her partner Adam Alderman and his two sisters, Morgan, 8, and Indie, 10 months. The family moved to Bradley Stoke just under a year ago from Kingswood and live in a bungalow that has been specially adapted to meet Cameron’s needs. Cameron’s condition has affected every aspect of his development including mobility, speech, behaviour and

understanding. He is a part-time wheelchair user, non-verbal and has recently had surgery to place a permanent feeding tube. Although he currently has some hearing capability in one ear, this is expected to diminish as he gets older. Mum Carla told the Journal: “Raising a deafblind child brings many challenges to everyday life, such as accessing the environment safely. Although we face many challenges, Cameron is a happy little boy who brings such joy to our lives.” The family has received support from Sense, the national charity that supports people who are deafblind, have sensory impairments or complex needs, to enjoy more independent lives. They first came into contact with Sense when Cameron was

diagnosed with Norrie disease at the age of three months. They began visiting The Sense Woodside Family Centre in Kingswood, where the staff provided emotional support to the family, helped them meet people in similar situations and also provided Cameron with oneto-one support, working with him at home and in the community. Explaining the benefits of the garden, Carla said: “A sensory garden is a safe and accessible garden that can be explored through all of the senses. We have different textures such as sand, grass and gravel to explore, herbs and plants to smell, windchimes to listen to and a lazy spa hot tub which provides him with hydro therapy to help improve his mobility.” “It is so important for Cameron to stimulate his other senses in order to learn, as 80 percent of what you learn is usually through the visual channel. He feels most confident at home in his own environment and being able to walk outdoors is something he has been working so hard for over the last six months. He has already gained so much more independence in the short time of using the garden.” “The garden also provides all of us as a family a calming relaxing environment away from the stresses of weekly hospital appointments.”

Cameron explores the garden

The fundraising originally began back in March, when Carla’s old school friend Laura Jones organised a charity ball. This raised over £700, which helped the family make the garden safe. A large proportion of the remaining cost of the garden was raised for the family by Bristol musician Darren Sims, via his Daz’s Rock 4 Charity initiative. As well as travelling around the country performing at small local gigs and events, Darren organises big charity events that raise substantial sums of money for people in need (totalling over £400,000 since 2007). The family met Darren Sims through mutual friends at previous public charity events and quickly became good friends as Cameron adores his music. Carla continued: ”In May, Darren said he would like to help the family get the work finished and set a target of raising £500.

He provided live music, alongside auctions and much more at a charity event and ended up raising an amazing £2,500, which has enabled us to improve the garden even more.” All of the hard work involved in building the garden has been undertaken by Carla’s partner Adam, leading to him being shortlisted for Sense’s Carer of the Year 2017 Award. Eldest daughter Morgan has also been recognised by the charity, receiving a Young Sibling

of the Year Award in 2016 for all of the care she has provided to her younger brother. She also helped raise awareness of deafblindness by inviting Sense into her previous school. The family hosted a barbecue on August bank holiday Monday at which friends and those who have donated were able to see the garden for the first time.

Captains’ Day at Bradley Stoke Bowls Club The bowls club was lucky with the weather for its Captains’ Charity Day on 13th August, writes club member Arthur Allan. Over 60 members contributed to raise £816 for the Jessie May children’s charity and it is hoped to reach £1,000 by the end of the season. The event was exceedingly well organised by Club Captain Bob Wilkins aided by his wife Janet and other members. Specsavers Cup: The winners in a tight competition among 16 pairs of bowlers were Janet Slade and John Scrase. They are pictured receiving their award from the Club President Bill Plank, who also took part. Dennis Overton ran a very efficient competition on the 16th August ably assisted in catering and other duties by several members.

Obituary

“Oldest first-time author in history” dies at 95 JIM HUMPHRIES, who lived in Bradley Stoke and who wrote his published life story ‘Lucky Jim’ at the age of 95 – and by so doing became the oldest first time author in the world – has sadly passed away at the age of 96. He was one of the last survivors of Britain’s greatest generation, men who volunteered to serve their country at the beginning of World War 2. He had a miraculous escape from being captured as a Prisoner of War when he managed to get

on the last boat out of France to England in 1940. He called his book “Lucky Jim” because he felt he had the greatest good luck out of anyone he had ever met. Born in 1921, he grew up in a poor working class family in Stoke on Trent. His big break came when at the age of 18 he joined the RAF and was posted soon afterwards to Bristol to help protect the city in the Bristol Blitz.

Coming from the Potteries – one of the most polluted areas in Britain – he immediately fell in love with the beauty of Bristol with its abundance of parks, flowers and trees. But most of all he fell in love with a beautiful seventeen year old girl he met at a dance in Filton called Marjorie Tucker. He knew he’d met the love of his life. But there was a problem. Marjorie was engaged to another young man from Filton- Jimmy Mack who was serving as a navigator in the Fleet Air Arm. He didn’t want Jimmy Mack to get a Dear John letter when he was flying for his country, so – even though he was very much in love- he asked to be posted somewhere else. He ended up in India and tried to forget about Marjorie. But he missed her so badly that after years apart, at the end of the war whilst still in India he plucked up the courage to write to her to see how she was. He imagined she would now be married to Jimmy Mack. He got a letter back saying that sadly he had been killed in action shortly before she was due to marry him, just a few weeks before the end of the war. Marjorie included a photo of herself and in that moment Jim knew that he would marry her and they fell in love all over again. He married Marjorie in St Peter’s Church, Filton on 6th September 1947. After the war, Jim became a well-known sportsman excelling

Jim Humphries was a long-time member of the Bradley Stoke Bowls Club - and before it the Northavon Bowls Club from 1992 onwards - and was recently made a life member. Jim represented the club at league level in his seventies and eighties. Even in his nineties, he still played the occasional game and went along to support the team. He was also a regular at all the local old time and ballroom dancing groups in the area, as well as an occasional golfer at Filton Golf Course. Many knew Jim from his days as a founder member and left winger playing for Filton Old Boys Football Club. Few could believe that until a few years ago in the summer he would play a round of golf in the morning, dance in the afternoon and then play bowls in the evening!

in amateur football as a high scoring left winger for Filton Old Boys and in cricket as an allrounder for the Bohemians. What was most remarkable about him was that he continued playing sport for so long. He played his last game of football in his late fifties and his last cricket match in his late sixties. He then took up bowls, golf and ballroom dancing- which he continued into his early nineties. Jim lost his first wife Marjorie in 1992, then his second wife Heather in 2007 – both to cancer – but he determinedly carried on living independently by himself in his bungalow in Bradley Stoke, known and loved by many in the neighbourhood for his generosity and his positive approach to life. But with declining health, Jim experienced a number of falls

recently as a result of his frailty. The fatal one came a couple of weeks ago as he stepped out of his front door to go to his car. He broke his hip and lay in agony on the drive in heavy rain until a passer-by heard his screams for help. An ambulance was called and he was taken to Southmead Hospital for an emergency operation. He never recovered and passed away four days later on Monday 7th August. Despite this, he remained incredibly strong and cheerful to the very end. He was surrounded by his family who read extracts from his book to him on his death bed. His funeral was due to be held on Tuesday 29th August at St Peter’s Church, Filton, almost exactly 70 years ago to the day that he married Marjorie there. Steve Humphries (son)

In Brief

Bradley Stoke Beat Team PC Jamie Shiels reports

W

e’re investigating a fire in the garage of a family home in Ellicks Close, Bradley Stoke at about 3.45am on Saturday 12th August while the family, including two young children, were asleep. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but there was extensive damage to the garage and a car parked outside. If you have any information please get in touch (see the news article on page 39 for further details). In our August report (published on the BSJ website), we told you what we’ve been doing to tackle nuisance moped riders, especially around Jubilee Park and Ellan Hay Road. We’ve continued our patrols and have now issued eight warning notices to riders, meaning if we see the vehicle being ridden in an anti-social way again – no matter by whom – we can seize it. The owners then have to pay more than £100 to get it back.

NOW ING RECRUIT IN YOUR AREA

With the darker autumn nights and new school year we should all take more care on our roads. If your child walks to school, please remind them how to cross the road safely – ideally using a pedestrian crossing, making sure they can see clearly in each direction and always looking both ways. They should be aware of their surroundings, so not staring at their phone or listening to music so they can’t hear approaching traffic. Make sure they wear appropriate reflective clothing, and if they cycle they should wear a helmet and have lights and reflectors on their bike. Those rules apply to adults as well! One of the important things motorists must do is obey speed and parking restrictions which are put in place to protect other road users. We’d like to remind anyone dropping children off or collecting them:

September 2017

• Never park on the yellow zigzags – council enforcement officers could issue you with an £100 fine • Slow down • Respect the crossing attendant, if there is one • Park with consideration for residents • Parking on the white zigzags at a zebra crossing, or causing any unnecessary obstruction, could mean a police ticket with an £100 penalty We’d prefer it if everyone just allowed a little more time for the school run and parked with more care! For beat surgery times, once known, see the BSJ website. ASPolice Bradley Stoke @ASPTheStokes

‘In Bloom’ volunteers adopt ‘Aztec Triangle’ By Sara Messenger of Bradley Stoke in Bloom (BSiB)

L

ike many of you, we were rather fed up of staring at grubby traffic cones forlornly guarding muddy piles at the Aztec West roadworks, so we’ve started a new project which we call the ‘Aztec Triangle.’ We know it’s more of a trapezoid or an irregular quadrilateral than a triangle, but I have trouble spelling those words! We were told by the contractors “no trees or deep rooted plants” as there are cables underground, so I’m assuming the tree they themselves planted has special short roots! It’s a work in progress, as although the weather was kind for once, by mid-afternoon on our August workday we were running out of steam. This may have been caused by the heavy work, although I suspect it had more to do with being weighed down by the large amount of cake we ate to celebrate Andrew and Sarah’s birthdays! It was a great day with many people stopping to chat or take tea with us, or offering to water the plants. We’d also like to thank Almondsbury Garden Centre, Vanessa, Maureen and Nicola for donating plants and shrubs to the project.

Tree Charter

Bradley Stoke Town Council has persuaded us to join forces with them as they have signed the ‘Tree Charter’. More than 70 organisations have created a Charter for Trees, Woods and People that will guide policy and practice in the UK. We believe the people of the UK have a right to the many benefits brought by trees and woods. The new Tree Charter, launching on 6th November 2017, will recognise, celebrate and protect this right. We have already collected many signatures from both young and old(er), and later this year we plan to plant a Community Orchard between Trench Lane and the Paddock Close playground. If you are interested in joining us you can find more information on the town council website at www.bradleystoke. gov.uk/tree-charter.php

by Craig de Groot, chiropractor at Willow Brook Clinic

Can a Chiropractor help you reduce stress?

D

oes stress seem to follow you wherever you go? At home, you have the stress of busy family life and other daily, stressful home tasks. At work, you have to deal with the stress of your boss and co-workers. Even on your drive home you have to deal with the stress of traffic. Can you ever get a break from the stress? Stress seems to be a part of everyday life, no matter what your career or age is. Often we create the stress for ourselves while, at other times, stress is just another part of living in this current day and age. While stress may, sometimes, just be part of our normal lives (some stress can even be beneficial in helping us perform better) generally, too much stress is not good for our health. There are a countless number of studies that show the adverse effects of stress on our health. Stress can cause weight gain, mental disorders, sleep loss, and more. Plus, you don’t really need a health study to tell you that living in constant stress makes you feel horrible. There are many excellent and natural ways to deal with the stress. Many people don’t think to turn to chiropractic care for relief. Our bodies are brilliant at telling us what is wrong and your chiropractor has been

trained to further identify what may be wrong and how to fix it. An experienced chiropractor will take a full medical case history from you after which they will discuss your lifestyle and general well-being. Simple adjustments to your lifestyle and exercise regime, coupled with the correct hands-on treatment to muscles, joints and spine may be the solution to the pain you feel. By addressing pain and discomfort, anxiety and unnecessary stress can be eased. So what are you waiting for? Speak to a Chiropractor about ways of relieving your stress and helping you maintain a balanced lifestyle. Ellicks Close suspected arson

Bristol Parkway closed for the next two weeks

olice are appealing for information after a fire at the home of a woman and her two young children, which they believe was started deliberately. The fire at a property in Ellicks Close, Bradley Stoke caused extensive damage to the garage, including a number of appliances and garden tools, as well as a car parked on the driveway. The incident happened at about 3.45am on Saturday 12th August and, fortunately, the family escaped unharmed. Investigating officer PC Ryan Day said: “The outcome could have been so much worse. At the time the fire started, the two young children and their mother were fast asleep inside.” “I’d urge anyone in the area at the time, or who may have information to help our investigation, to get in touch.” A 17-year-old voluntarily

Readers are reminded that Bristol Parkway Station will be closed from Saturday 2nd September to Friday 15th September inclusive. During this period: • High-speed services will call at Patchway instead of Bristol Parkway. There will be only one train an hour at off-peak times • A shuttle bus will run between Bristol Parkway and Patchway • Local services between Yate and Filton Abbey Wood will be replaced by buses • Trains will continue to run between Yate and Gloucester, and between Filton Abbey Wood and Bristol Temple Meads • CrossCountry trains will be diverted and call at Patchway instead of Bristol Parkway The closure is associated with the mainline electrification project and will also allow work to begin on the installation of a fourth platform at the station.

P

attended a police station in connection with the incident and was released without charge. Anyone with information should call the police on the nonemergency number 101 quoting reference 5217184813. You can also call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. They never ask for your name and cannot trace your call. The mother, Aaliyah Hussain, later described to BBC Points West how she was terrified to be woken by a young man who banged on the front door of her house and told her the garage and car were on fire. The fire service arrived promptly and brought the fire under control. However, they were unable to save the contents of the garage, which included Aaliyah’s wedding dress, clothes, photographs and other items of sentimental value.

Still from a video of the fire

Neighbours and members of the wider community in Bradley Stoke were quick to offer help and support. Their kindness to the family and their generosity in offering items to replace those lost (such as bikes and scooters for the children) is greatly appreciated, said Aaliyah.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Graham Bayley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing

is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do

the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Bradley Stoke, Little Stoke, Stoke Lodge, Patchway and Stoke Gifford areas and Graham is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is

that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Graham a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Little Acers rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted

Pre-school within Sure Start Centre at Bowsland Green Primary School praised by inspectors

A

Bradley Stoke pre-school is celebrating after being awarded a clean sweep of ‘outstanding’ marks in a recent Ofsted inspection. Little Acers, which is based in the grounds of Bowsland Green Primary School and has been running since 2006, was visited by an inspector in mid-May and she concluded that the quality and standard of Early Years provision at the pre-school is now ‘outstanding’ in all four assessment categories. The latest result is a step up from the ‘good’ grade awarded to the setting at its previous inspection in June 2015. In her summary of key findings, the Ofsted inspector praises the management and staff for demonstrating a strong commitment to continually improving and developing the pre-school. Staff are said to be “highly evaluative” and use their findings to make changes which benefit the children and their families. The inspector found the children “extremely motivated to learn” and noted that they show a keen interest and enthusiasm in the activities provided, and display high levels of concentration. Parents were found to be “extremely happy” with the care that their children receive and it was noted that staff work closely with parents to support the children with their development. Reacting to the report, Little Acers manager Stacy Ashdown said: During our recent inspection we were praised for our approach to learning. The inspector also noted our strong links with the local community as well as the local primary schools.” “We are absolutely delighted that the hard work of our staff, children and families has been recognised by Ofsted resulting in our across-the-board ‘outstanding’ grading.” ● Visit the pre-school’s website at www.lachildcare.co.uk

I’m 46 and have been a resident of Bradley Stoke for the last 22 years. I will be taking part in the 2018 Virgin London Marathon following a successful application for a charity place in the team for the Mental Health Foundation. Promoting mental health awareness is something that I feel very passionate about, and personal experience has highlighted the benefits of spreading this awareness. I started running in April 2016 and from then it has become an irreplaceable part of my life. You may have seen me running about Bradley Stoke with fellow members of one of the running groups I have joined – North Bristol Running Group. My own mental health has benefited immensely from taking up running. To help share this

benefit I have since become an England Athletics Mental Health Ambassador for Staple Hill Runners, another group to which I belong. Over the next few months, I will be going ‘all out’ with events and activities in order to reach my fundraising target of £1,800! This will be a huge achievement and will also secure my place to run with the team. Come and join me at my first event, a karaoke dance night at Almondsbury Sports and Social Club!
