To discourage striking, the prisoner is moved from communal living to solitary confinement and is force-fed. Because I decided to peacefully protest my imprisonment here, the special mattress and medical pillows prescribed for my chronic back pain, all of my underwear, my electric razor, and even my bar of soap and toothbrush have been confiscated. I, too, am strapped down and force-fed for over an hour every single day. During the session, I am constantly vomiting the feeding solution into my lap. As I am carried back to my cell, I cannot help but vomit on
the guards carrying me. They put a Plexiglas face mask on my head to protect their clothes from my vomit. They tighten the facemask and press down on it, pushing it into my face. I almost suffocate because I am vomiting inside the facemask and am unable to breathe. As I struggle for air, the guards make fun of me, laughing loudly. Frequently, they lie me down on my stomach in my cell and press my back forcefully, squeezing out any remaining feeding solution from the previous forcefeeding session. The lightest of the guards weighs at least 190 lbs, while I weigh only 98 lbs; it is a wonder they do not break me entirely. Aside from those imprisoned with me, nobody can truly understand how we suffer. The Colonel will not allow media into Guantanamo Bay, claiming he is protecting our privacy. No man here wants privacy from the media. The Colonel fears that if the media comes in and meets with the prisoners, all of this daily brutality will be exposed. Hopefully this letter serves that end. There are currently 21 prisoners on hunger strike. I am one of the 16 who are being force-fed. The government does not want the American people to know that we are still striking. They try to discourage us with solitary confinement and brutal treatment but we will not abandon our protest. Willis came to the attention of law enforcement after multiple pornographic images of children were posted to several websites. The investigation led to the identity of Willis who had been posting and exchanging child pornography in Corpus Christi between May and October 2012 via leg itimate websites with other users who were similarly interested. Willis resided in Corpus Christi during parts of 2012 but left the area sometime during late 2012. He was eventually discovered and arrested without incident in Petersberg, Virginia, in October 2013. The ongoing investigation has linked Willis to numerous occurrences of Internet-based child pornography-related activities in multiple states. Willis will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future. How do you get your art in front of people who will not only love it, but want to buy it as well? Should you invest in magazine ads? Participate in art festivals? Show your work in a local gallery? All valid tactics you should be pursuing, but you may be overlooking your best marketing opportunity: Selling to collectors who have purchased your work in the past. This seems like an obvious suggestion - after all, past buyers clearly like your work and have explicitly told you they are qualified to purchase(nothing says “I can buy” like pulling out the credit card and buying). Taylor, 23, of Kansas City-North, was charged in an eight-count indictment returned under seal by a federal grand jury in Kansas City, Missouri, on January 29, 2013. The indictment was unsealed and made public today upon Taylor’s arrest and initial court appearance. The federal indictment charges Taylor with five counts of attempting to distribute child pornography over the Internet, two counts of receiving child pornography over the Internet, and one count of possessing child pornography. The indictment also contains a forfeiture allegation, which would require Taylor to forfeit to the government any property used to commit the alleged offenses, including two desktop computers. Dickinson cautioned that the charges contained in this indictment are simply accusations, and not evidence of guilt. Believing that he was still talking to the child, Estes sent videos depicting child pornography and images of his genitalia. Estes was arrested by law enforcement on March 22, 2013. During an interview, he stated that he had met the child while playing a video game played on Xbox. Estes also admitted to sending a picture of his genitalia to the child, as well as child pornography videos. He
stated that he had asked the child to send naked pictures of himself. Estes also said that he had been in communication with a 13-year-old boy in Texas and that he had met that child while playing Xbox as well. Following Estes’ arrest, a search warrant was conducted on his e-mail address. An examination of his e-mail account showed that he distributed child pornography to numerous persons between July 2012 and March 2013. Among the images and videos of child pornography distributed, several included pornographic videos that Estes had produced himself, while sexually abusing at least two children. A forensic review of Estes’ cell phone showed that he possessed more than 1,200 images of child pornography, including images depicting infants being sexually abused. began in July 2013 and revealed that an IP address subscribed to Iben’s residential address was being used to share child pornography images. According to the criminal complaint, on November 20, 2013, FBI agents executed a federal search warrant at Iben’s residence and seized computers and computer-related media. While the search warrant was being executed, Iben participated in a voluntary, recorded interview during which he admitted began sharing child pornography images years ago and last received or sent such images by e-mail the week before. A subsequent forensic examination of a laptop computer taken from Iben’s residence revealed that it contains images consistent with child pornography. On December 17, 2013, Iben was indicted and charged with two counts of receipt of child pornography; two counts of distribution of child pornography; and one count of possession of child pornography. The indictment alleged that Iben received child pornography on two occasions on April 29, 2013, and d i st r ibuted child pornography on two occasions on Setember 20, 2013. It also alleged that Iben possessed child pornography on November 20, 2013, and that Iben committed all five offenses in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. Today Iben entered guilty pleas to all five counts of the indictment. Paul Scrom, age 63, of Albany, New York, pled guilty today in Albany before Senior United States District Judge Thomas J. McAvoy to one count of distribution of child pornography, announced United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and Andrew W. Vale, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Scrom faces a statutory mandatory minimum sentence of five years and a maximum sentence of 20 years, as well as a lifetime term of supervised release, a maximum fine of $250,000, and mandatory registration as a sex offender. Scrom will be sentenced in Albany, New York, on October 14, 2014. As part of his guilty plea, Scrom admitted that he distributed images and movies of child pornography through a peer-topeer file sharing program. Liz Nichols is the Occupy Portland protester whose image became widely known for being blasted in the face with pepper spray by a Portland police officer in fall 2011. She sued the city for excessive force but lost after a four-day trial in August in U.S. District Court in Portland. She had sought $30,000, noting the excruciating pain of pepper spray in her eyes and throat -- and the ensuing nightmares, depression and worsening eczema. But the jury sided with Portland, and so the city was entitled to recover its costs of defending itself. Deputy city attorney David Landrum
said he offered to drop the city’s pursuit of costs if Nichols agreed to waive an appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He called one of Nichols’ attorneys with the offer. Nichols, 23, is a college student at Portland State University. At the time of her federal trial, she also was working as a janitor. Nichols decided to appeal. So the city sought its payback. Millennials -- even those from the middle class -- are experiencing income inequality and America’s failed dream of upward mobility first-hand. The mismatch of college-educated young workers with low-wage, unskilled, precarious jobs is creating a new face of the oncedwindling American labor movement: young, diverse, led by millennials in their twenties and thirties, and fighting what they see as an unfair labor market. Their modest cause? Pushing for a higher minimum wage. Because of too many young people interested looking for work, these millennials reason that the labor movement is the only way to address large-scale poverty and income inequality -starting with their own. The “Fight for 15” movement is the most visible of these. Drove down to visit my mom and coincidentally try to see some of the great birds that had been viewed in the area recently. [transparent.gif ] What does time look like? We are all familiar with the standard timeline that measures out events with neat tick-marks, like the divisions on a ruler. Yet whilst very few of us really think about the past in this sort of methodical way, the tools we use in the digital realm impose an artificial sense of order and regularity to the unfolding of events. Taking an eighteenthcentury reference work, Edmund Fry’s Pantographia, as her case study, Professor Drucker will examine the various overlapping frameworks that authors use when assembling and organizing historical events. Her lecture will argue that the development of digital tools must be guided by humanities scholars if we are to represent the human past faithfully. Abstract review: The Program Committeewill review abstracts this month. By the end of February, we will notify you whether your abstract has been provisionally accepted and in what format it can be accommodated (poster/ oral). At that time, we will also post a complete list of provisionally-accepted abstracts to provide people with an early look at the conference’s overall program content. Final acceptance will require registration. Once participants have registered, the abstracts will be organized into a program schedule (days, sessions, & times). Brian, a 20 something everyman, has been surviving in Detroit’s inner city since the beginning. Driven to nervous collapse and realizing his chance for survival is scant, he embarks on a deathwish fantasy -- to fulfil his lifelong dream of becoming a beach bum in sunny California. Armed to the teeth and blazing a motorcycle, the only thing standing between Brian and his dream are millions of vampire/zombie hybrids, as well as the dangerous remnants of humanity. Brian sets out on sprawling road trip of scorched Americana on his way to the Pacific coast. Forced to seek refuge night after night, the protagonist makes his way through a fallen society turned labyrinth of carnage while battling enemy survivors, relentless vampire hordes, and his own perpetual bad luck. Finally reaching Colorado, Brian rescues a 5 year old named Danny. Hiding in the ventilation ducts of an elementary school for months, the scavenging child soon displays his skills for expert m a rk s m a n s h ip. The duo cautiously trek through the Rocky Mountains and combine forces with a tough-as-nails female survivor named Jen. Brian and she quickly become romantically inclined. But when Jen’s hide out is compromised by a savage vampire attack, the trio are left with no choice but to make a desperate, high-octane push for the Pacific Coast. Brian, Danny and Jen must brave one final mission - roaring their way through mountainous Northern California on motorcycle. The three proceed on their probable suicide mission - hacking, slashing, and blasting their way through legions of vampires, biker gangs, redneck cannibals, AWOL soldiers, and warring factions of survivors... A major winter storm will continue to
