UCHING: For more than ten years, Shangyin Music Centre Sdn Bhd (Shangyin) has been spreading the Chinese and Western music culture via classes for both children and adults. There are currently two Shangyin music centres in Sarawak – at Kuching and Miri – in addition to a music school in Sinapore, all of which are independently managed. In Kuching, Shangyin’s Chinese music instrument classes currently cover Guzheng, Erhu, LiuQin, Yangqin, Pipa, ZhongRuan and Dizi while the western music instrument classes cover piano, keyboard and guitar. For those who are unsure of what they want to play, Shangyin has a short course (12 classes) for beginners to have tryout lessons with any of the instruments offered at the music school. According to Yap Ting from

Shangyin Kuching, this will enable students to be able to make a more informed decision after completing the course, upon which, they can then invest in the instrument of their choice. Exams offered at Shangyin include the Chinese Instrumental Graded Examination and for Western instruments, assessment are available from the Trinity College London Examinations Board and Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). He further pointed out that grading for the exams are not biased as they are being assessed by one examiner only who will fly to Singapore first before coming down to Kuching. In fact, Ting highlighted that many of their students, especially those who had excelled in their exams and shown great interest in their musical talent, have gone on to become teachers at the tuition

centre. “Teachers from our Singaporebased Shangyin Music School also occassionally come down to Kuching to visit the music centre here to give lessons to both teachers and students. “They basically give us guidance and their own point of views,” Ting said. Shangyin ALSO has its own orchestral group called the Kuching Shangyin Chamber Ensemble. It was initially formed two years ago when the group was invited to perform at an event in Shanghai, China. The Kuching Shangyin Chamber Ensemble won an award at the expo for creativity due to their use of the sapeh instrument music infused with the Chinese traditional instruments music. those who are interested to join the classes can reach Shangyin at 082-463282 or 082-463084.
