School’s Out for the Day, it’s Time to Play! _______________________________

K

Kids have already been in school for over a month. Parents have settled into the new routine for the year and kids are used to homework. It is time to start thinking about what to do on those days off of school.

Don’t worry parents, Bolingbrook Park District has you covered by offering Day Off School Care on October 11, October 29 and November 11. Kids just need to bring a sack lunch, a couple snacks, a water bottle and all the excitement of a day off school to the Annerino Community Center. We will play games, test our skills with a little Nintendo Wii and play outside if the weather allows. “It is so nice to be back to offering programs like this for kids,” said Ryan

Kertson, who is the manager overseeing the program. “These programs offer a sense of normalcy and socialization that our kids missed so much of over the last 18 months. We love to see the kids in our facilities.” This program is open to kids ages 5-12 years and will run from 9:00 am-5:00 pm. The fee is $45 or $30 with a current Resident ID. Pre-registration is required. Register at www.bolingbrookparks.org or in our facilities.

Attention Lovers of A We Have Lots of B __________________________________

Bring on the pumpkin spice, bonfires, and crisp cool air that we all love about fall. It is a season of change and Bolingbrook Park District is ready to embrace it all. “I am really proud of our team and the variety of options they are providing our community,” said Mike Baiardo, Director of Recreation and Facilities. “We are so happy to be able to bring these programs back and offer them again.” The fall line-up features some new programs such as Escape the Laboratory at Hidden Oaks and Celebrating with My Group Up Halloween Costume Party. Our beloved traditions are also back including Freaky Fun Friday, Parkie’s Pumpkin Patch and Lifestyles Turkey Burner. Your fall fun awaits, you just need to mark it on your calendar to be sure you do not miss it.

All Things Fall, f Fun Just for You! We Didn’t Forget About Our Adults!

Pumpkin Shoot Saturday, November 6 Everyone enjoys creating Jack O’Lanterns in the fall, but many don’t know how fun it is to destroy them with a bow and arrow. Hidden Oaks Nature Center offers a safe space to do just that! Our team will teach kids them how to shoot a bow and arrow. Once they have it down, they can shoot their pumpkin that they brought to destroy. The best part is our team will use the pumpkin debris in our compost bins. It is a win-win for everyone. Even though we think teens will love this activity, it is open to everyone. Arrows are just $1 on-site (cash only) or you may purchase 10 arrows in advance for just $5.

Enjoy a Bike Path or Trail Anytime you want The sites and sounds of fall provide the perfect time to enjoy our bike paths and trails. You walk, jog, rollerblade or ride your bike. Some paths loop around the perimeter of a park while others are linear connecting neighborhoods to parks and schools. The Park District’s pathway system has three major legs and many lesser offshoots. The major legs, the DuPage River Greenway, the ComEd Greenway and the Lily Cache Greenway. Check the map in the back of this newsletter to see where the greenways are.

Lifestyles Thanksgiving Turkey Burner Thursday, November 25 It is easy to enjoy too many pumpkin spice lattes and apple cider donuts. We have got you covered. Lifestyles Fitness Center offers free workouts Thanksgiving morning. This is a great way to kick-off your holiday with a healthy habit. Classes are held in-person. Pre-registration is required. All these programs may be registered for at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex, 200 Lindsey Lane, Annerino Community Center, 201 Recreation Drive or online at www.bolingbrookparks.org.

ComEd Openlands Green Region Grant

The Bolingbrook Park District will be planting 48 trees this fall. These are memorial trees and replacement of trees removed due to the Emerald Ash Borer.

Natural Resources crew members Steve Litoborski, Lesa Abalos, and Evan McClure install native plants to provide habitat and food for native fauna and to increase plant diversity.

Our natural resources team was hard at work completing restoration work on the Lily Cache Greenway this summer to complete the ComEd Openlands Green Region Grant. The project included: • Enhancement of 6 pollinator areas along the creek. • Two of the sections required a complete overhaul consisting of invasive tree and shrub removal, along with the seeding of native short grass prairie seed mix, installed erosion control blanket, and added native plants to help the restoration establish more quickly. • Four sections were enhancement projects, which consisted of invasive tree and shrub removal, and planting native plants to fill bare areas and increase species diversity. Bolingbrook Park District staff will continue to manage and monitor all six of these areas. We hope to use these areas as starting points and expand our restoration efforts to more of the Lily Cache Greenway over the next few years. A special thank you to ComEd and Openlands for making it possible.

Christine Pfau sits at her desk in her chilly office in Lifestyles Fitness, which is located about 20 yards away from the indoor pool. This is perfect for her because as the Aquatic and Fitness Program Supervisor, she’s in charge of a variety of programs in the fitness center and Pelican Harbor Aquatic Park. She balances her time between both facilities and one of her many responsibilities includes overseeing the Pelicans Swim Team. Pelican Harbor has been home to the swim team since 2013. The team has seen as many as 100 swimmers in its peak seasons. With the first full season in the books this past summer since COVID-19 interrupted operations back in 2020, Christine looks forward to seeing more swimmers come through this fall as the season begins the first week of October. “We all had a ton of fun this summer with the 40+ swimmers that were on the team,” said Pfau. “We’re hoping we can get back to over 50 for the fall season.” Ashley Kerber is the newly appointed head coach. She’s entering her third year on the coaching staff after previously serving as an assistant coach. She swam competitively with the Moline Blue Marlines and at Moline

Senior High School. Ashley and the rest of the coaches pride themselves on creating at atmosphere for the team focused around togetherness, belonging, and fun. “I hear all the time from parents that the reason they keep enrolling their children in swim team is because it’s a great place, with great people, a clean pool, and it really feels like a family,” said Pfau. The fall/winter season of swim team runs through March and swimmers will be able to participate in anywhere from 10-12 swim meets, half of them being at Pelican Harbor Indoor Aquatic Park. “We’re going to have a lot of fun and compete, but we want to stress that we are a recreation-based swim team,” said Pfau. “We can and will prepare swimmers that are ready to take the next step to a more serious competition experience if they chose to do so, but our focus is on fun, safety, learning strokes, and teamwork.” For those interested in joining the team, a prerequisite to signing up is to make sure that kids can swim at least 50 yards and are comfortable in the water. If they aren’t there yet, a perfect place to start is enrolling in Parkie’s Swim School. For questions and additional information, please contact Christine at cpfau@bolingbrookparks.org or (630) 783-6644.

Kai Wahlgren

Superintendent of Recreation

Kai has been with Bolingbrook Park District for 21 years. He first started back in 2000 when he was hired as the Athletic Supervisor, where he oversaw the adult sports leagues, which included softball, flag football, and volleyball leagues. As his career progressed, he was promoted to Facility/Program Manager in 2002 where he held that position for 15 years. In 2017, he was promoted to his current position of Superintended of Recreation. His main responsibilities include: • Overseeing the overall operation and vision of the Recreation Division, which includes managing the budget, and creating and evaluating program and event offerings to meet the needs of the community. • Managing five full time staff that operate the early childhood, youth, teen, adult, dance, gymnastics, and preschool programs, along with special events.

Put Your Family’s Care in Our Hands Our AMITA Health Medical Group physicians provide compassionate, quality care delivered with dignity and empathy. Featuring: • Preventive care for the whole family • Back-to-school and sports physicals

“I’ve always been attracted providing positive experiences through park and recreation programs for our community,” said Wahlgren. “It’s not a 9:00-5:00 desk job and I get the opportunity to see people learn new skills, teamwork, and just have fun.” His path to parks and recreation began when he majored in Recreation Administration at Illinois State University. Prior to Bolingbrook Park District, he was the Director of Operations for the Chicago Marathon from 1996-97 and then the Recreation Supervisor at HomewoodFlossmoor Park District from 1997-2000. “I came to BPD because it gave me the opportunity as a resident to provide activities for my children to participate in and be part of a park district that has a reputation of being on the leading edge for program creation and facility management,” said Wahlgren. “In my time here, I firmly believe we’ve built on that reputation.” Kai can be reached at kwahlgren@ bolingbrookparks.org or (630) 783-6532.

Bolingbrook Park District offers programs in these areas:

It’s Fall and it’s Prescribed Burn Season After School

Toddler & Youth

This prescribed burn took place last year at the area along Recreation Drive. _________________________________

E

Every year in early spring and late fall, Bolingbrook Park District staff conduct prescribed burns in selected natural areas. Safety is our highest priority. All burns are led by an Illinois Certified Prescribed Burn Manager, and carried out by staff certified in wildland fire safety. Fire plays a role in managing our natural communities by helping to control undesirable woody vegetation. Prescribed fire is also beneficial to native plants and wildflowers. It

encourages new seed growth by removing leaf litter or dead plant material; allowing sunlight to reach the soil, increasing seed germination and plant growth. There are many variables we consider when determining which sites to be burned such as wind speed and direction, vegetation moisture, and humidity levels. Due to these variables, there is no set schedule in place as to which areas will be burned. If you have any questions about our prescribed burns, please contact our Buildings, Grounds and Natural Resources Department at (630) 7394696.

Website Launch Moved to October _________________________________

T

The Bolingbrook Park District was hoping to launch its new website earlier than planned in August, but the team decided to move the launch back to its original date of October. “Our site has many complex features with its integration with our program database and registration software. We determined it was best to take the extra time that we originally planned for to ensure the new features are working properly,” said Kimberly Smith, Director of Marketing and Customer Care. “We are so excited to share the new features with the residents.” The new site will include an improved search function for programs, increased readability, improved performance in both mobile and desktop platforms, easier way to find parks and facilities, and a more visually attractive design. The new site is set launch by the end of October.

The new website will feature a dynamic park map to make it easier to find a park with the features you are looking for.
