Walking Club Started June 1st _______________________________

Walking is one of the best exercises you can do for your body. It is something that almost anyone can do. Regular walking can help you maintain a healthy weight and lose body

fat. It strengthens your bones and muscles while improving your overall cardiovascular fitness. Bolingbrook Park District offers a variety of trails that provide beautiful scenery to enjoy while you walk which provides an added benefit for your mental health. “Walking is a great starting point for anyone on a health and wellness journey,” said Chris Piasecki, Fitness and Facility Manager. “It is always easier to start a new journey with friends. Therefore, we kicked off our Summer Walking Club on June 1st.”

The Walking Club is open to anyone that wants to make new friends and enjoy the benefits of walking. This self-guided group meets on Wednesdays at 8:00 am and will continue through October 26th. The club meets near the parking lot along the DuPage River Greenway Trail at Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm, 475 Trout Farm Road. “We encourage the residents of Bolingbrook to take advantage of our trails and get moving this summer,” said Piasecki. There is no need to register. Just stop by and join the group. bolingbrookparks.org

Playgrounds, Pickleball Courts and Softball Lights Among the Biggest Projects for the Summer

A

As the snow fades away and the summer sun begins to shine, the projects team at Bolingbrook Park District enters “go mode.” The summer of 2022 will be another busy one. Five more playgrounds are being replaced as a result of the 2018 referendum ask. All of the playgrounds are a minimum of 20-years-old making it hard to find replacement parts to maintain safety. “Our parks team has done a wonderful job keeping these playgrounds in the best shape possible, but at some point, they simply are not able to get parts and it is time to replace the entire structure,” said Chris Corbett, Superintendent of Projects and Planning. Freedom Park playground will be replaced and will also include a new ninja course. “The ninja course is a unique feature that we hope all our residents will enjoy. I can’t wait to see kids enjoying it,” said Corbett. Other replacement playgrounds are Bradford Park, Community Park and Sunset Park. Bradford and Community Park are now open for play. Sunset and Freedom Park

should be completed by late-June. Winston Woods playground was already replaced and opened in April. Based off feedback from the community, the district decided to add a few play features at the DuPage River Greenway trail head on Royce Road. These features will be added in the fall of 2022 and provide some fun elements for kids along the trail. Playgrounds are not the only projects coming this summer. Pickleball has arrived in Bolingbrook! Many residents have already taken advantage of the new courts that were included in the Century Park project last summer. We are excited to share that there soon will be more opportunities to play this sport that is exploding in popularity. “We saw an opportunity to adapt our existing roller hockey court to service pickleball. This space will soon have fencing and a new surface to feature four dedicated pickleball courts,” said Corbett. “This new feature will be ready by late June. The tennis courts at Prairie Trails and Ivanhoe Park will have newly painted pickleball lines as well.” A couple other large projects are focused on serving our athletic department. The Remington Lakes Sports Complex will be receiving new LED lights by the end of August. This project replaces our 28-yearold original lights. “The new technology

Lifestyles Fitness 200 Lindsey Lane | P (630) 739-1705 Pelican Harbor Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Park 200 Lindsey Lane | P (630) 739-1705

offerings in lighting will provide for energy efficiencies for the district. The athletics team can program the lights through smart devices which allows for additional support for rental groups. Lighting fields at night is a huge expense, so anything we can do to reduce cost and make it more convenient for our users is a win,” said Corbett. The other project impacting the athletics team is the resurfacing of the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex gymnasium flooring. The existing 25-year-old gym floor will be completely sanded and fresh lining of all sport courts will be applied with a new seal. The team will also address any existing floor concerns during the process. The flooring project is expected to start at the conclusion of summer day camp in August with completion in early September. Other projects include the replacement of air conditioning/heating units at the buildings and grounds facility, sealcoating throughout district property around town and the replacement of the entire flooring in the outdoor Pelican Harbor bathhouse and family changing rooms with an epoxy-based floor. Information about all projects can be found on the Bolingbrook Park District website at www.bolingbrookparks.org/ about/transparancy/active-projects. bolingbrookparks.org

Painted for ‘Kindness Day Bolingbrook’ which began in 2021, the mural represents the importance of spreading kindness and how everyone can make a difference. Pelican Harbor is Ready for a Great Summer!

______________________________

I

It has been a rough couple of years for pools. The shutdowns during the pandemic and managing the safety of participants put a strain on all area pools. Pelican Harbor has been fortunate. It was able to open to the public throughout the pandemic on a smaller scale. Lifeguards were able to continue to work and residents were able to enjoy Pelican Harbor. “We are happy to be emerging from the worst days of the pandemic. Our team has been phenomenal over the past few years. They have stayed with us during challenging times,” said Sarah Sielisch, Aquatic Manager. “We are grateful for our staff and all they do to provide a great experience at Pelican Harbor.” The bright spot over the last few years has been the growth in demand for swim lessons. This demand led to the decision to dedicate the indoor pool to swim lessons and lap swimming during the summer. “We have partnerships with Valley View School District and Northern Will County Special Recreation Association and our own swim program continues to grow,” said Sielisch. “This is exciting to see. We are impacting the community and ensuring as many people as possible are learning to swim. It is an important life-long skill.” The Pelican Harbor crew is hoping its

brightest days are yet to come. “We are hoping for a summer filled with sunny days and smiling faces. The pools are filled and ready for swimmers,” said Sielisch. Daily open swim times are offered for the outdoor pool. Pelican Harbor members can enter during early admission times Monday–Saturday from 11:30–noon and 10:00–10:30 am on Sundays. Public open swim is Monday–Friday from noon–7:00 pm, Saturday from noon–5:30 pm and Sunday from 10:30 am–5:30 pm. Admission

rates are $17 for non-residents and $10 for Bolingbrook residents. “If you love to come to pool, we encourage you to purchase a seasonal Pelican Pass. If you come only once a week, you will definitely see savings,” said Sielisch. Pelican Passes are $64 per person or $55 for residents. They may be purchased at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex, 200 Lindsey Lane or the Annerino Community Center, 201 Recreation Drive. Meet Our Staff !

Sarah Sielisch, CPO, AFO, CPRP Aquatic Manager

Sarah Sielisch began working with the Bolingbrook Park District in November of 2019 when she became the district’s Aquatic Manager. After growing up attending programs and then landing her first job with a park district, Sarah found her passion for serving others. “My second family has always come from park districts”, Sielisch states. “I wanted to be able to give back to the community and employees what park districts have done for me”. Sarah joined the Bolingbrook team with years of experience and a lot of excitement. She started her career as a lifeguard and swim instructor for the Woodridge Park District, where she made her way up to Head Pool Manager. Following graduation with her masters degree, Sarah received her first full time job at Foss Swim School as a Swim Coordinator in Chicago. But, after missing the family feeling and sense of community that park districts provide, she decided to move back to the suburbs. Sarah became the Aquatic and Recreation Supervisor for the Geneva Park District where she served

for about four years. She then transitioned to become Bolingbrook’s Aquatic Manager. To return home and be in charge of Pelican Harbor, a place she has known since sevenyears-old, was a fantastic opportunity. The best part about Sarah’s position is guiding young adults in their own first jobs. “It is so rewarding to watch their job skills grow. It is my favorite part to be their reference for a full-time job. I love getting an email or phone call that they got a full-time job and are super excited. The staff at Pelican Harbor works very hard, so it’s nice to see their hard work rewarded.” Sarah has an Australian Shephard mix named Roo, and is excited to share she is recently engaged. She is currently training for the Chicago Marathon which is coming up in October. Sarah continues to pursue her passion for coaching athletes one-onone and helping them obtain collegiate scholarships like she received while in college. Sarah can be reached at ssielisch@ bolingbrookparks.org or (630) 783-6637.
