ComEd Awards Bolingbrook Park District Grant to Replace Sports Lighting

BBolingbrook Park District’s Buildings, Grounds & Natural Resources Director, Chris Finn, is excited to share his department’s success in acquiring a $268,404 grant from ComEd to replace traditional bulb lighting at Central Park sports fields with state-ofthe-art LED fixtures. These fixtures will illuminate softball/baseball and football fields, as well as tennis courts, with brighter, crisper, energy efficient, dimmable and cost-effective rays. Construction is currently under way.

Among the many benefits this new lighting will bring to our residents and sports teams are fully programmable timer features, ambient dimming, focused light decreasing light pollution and an estimated annual energy cost savings of $17,666!

ComEd chooses a new area of focus for giving back to the community every year. Past years have focused on improving energy use in office spaces. Other times it’s been indoor spaces with very high ceilings known as high-bay areas. But this year our outdoor

athletic fields fit perfectly into ComEd’s community engagement initiative and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Thank you to ComEd for this great opportunity. And thank you to Chris Finn for helping them navigate a path for those funds to benefit the residents of the Bolingbrook Park District. We sincerely hope all of you will come out to enjoy the benefits of the new lights for years to come. Cheers!

Board of Commissioners

A Letter from the Executive Director

Cheerful and warm greetings to

you all!

On behalf of the board and staff of Bolingbrook Park District, we all hope you and your families are enjoying a lovely autumn and preparing for a fun Midwest winter.

2022 was a fun year for Bolingbrook Park District! We opened up some great renovated playgrounds, we had free movies, free concerts, free play days, and some amazing and fun free special events, which were all very well attended. Our program participation has been strong as well. We have seen so many smiling faces in gymnastics, pre-school, dance, Ninja, Learn to Swim, youth and adult athletics, Camp Alotta Fun, adult trips, and REACH. Of course, our facilities have been busy as well with record numbers at Pelican Harbor this summer, continued strong golf participation at Boughton Ridge, and increased use of Lifestyles Fitness Center.

We have a great plan of programs and activities in store for you in 2023. Our annual Winterfest is scheduled for Saturday, February 4th! Look for information on this outdoor fun event in the program brochure or online at www.bolingbrookparks.org.

The Park District is nearing completion of our updated strategic plan, which will outline our direction for the next 5 years. You can look forward to our final two 2018 referendum playground renovations (Erickson and Balstrode), plus a return of our free community events and services.

I hope your upcoming holidays are filled with joy and celebration. Thank you for your continued support of your Bolingbrook Park District programs, services, parks and natural areas.

Sincerely,

10 Healthy Tips for Surviving the Holidays

HHolidays are often filled with fun celebrations. They can be an exciting time and a time that can cause much anxiety for individuals who are trying to maintain or even lose a few pounds. Our team at Lifestyles Fitness Center has come up with a few tips to help guide you through this season.

It’s not about the actual Holidays. What you do on Thanksgiving day or Christmas day isn’t your major concern. It’s all the other days in between that will determine if your Holidays are healthful. You may encounter Holiday treats at random at work or at home from a kind neighbor brining you a home-baked gift. These situations are more frequent than a binge on a Holiday. Overeating on Thanksgiving day isn’t going to get you out of shape. Just like doing things right one day isn’t going to get you in shape. It’s all the little things on a daily basis that determine if you are moving toward fitness or away from it.

List your top 2–3 favorite treats during the Holidays and commit to having only those.

We’ve all got our favorites. List them and stick to them. You can enjoy your favorites without consuming any “accidental” junk food you weren’t planning on.

Let go of perfect.

We don’t expect it in other areas of life such as school, work or in our family members. Why do we expect “perfect” when we think about our fitness routine? You may miss a workout. In fact, everyone will at some point. It’s not the end of the world. Really. Just make sure you get the next one done.

Forget your workout routine. Just challenge yourself.

You may not have time for a full routine, so don’t do it! Exert yourself for 10 minutes if that’s all you have. Your body responds to the challenge of exercise, not to the amount of time you spend doing it.

Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t.

Every year we hear an endless parade of, “I’ve just been so busy with the Holidays and

family visits that I couldn’t workout.” This year, focus on what you can do instead of what you can’t. Look for solutions instead of repeatedly dwelling on the problems and obstacles.

Ask yourself, “Do I really have to ______?”

There is likely something that you tell yourself that you “have to” do, but you really don’t. Maybe it is sending out Holiday cards to everyone in your address book. Or maybe it is hosting the family at your house (again!) just like you do every year. You have more choices than you think.

Pick your top 5 favorite exercises. Write down your 5 favorite exercises. I’m sure squats will be on everyone’s list this year. When you need a blast of movement, do all of them for 30 seconds each. It will be easier if they are bodyweight exercises, but you can use anything as long as they are your favorite.

Explore fun ways to get the family moving. Family gatherings usually involve too much food and too much sitting around. Get everyone outside any way you can. Reinvent old traditions in movement-based ways. Instead of sitting around talking about what you’re thankful for, have everyone share that while they’re out on a walk together. Whoever is talking has to walk backwards and face the group while they share. Be creative. Too cold? Bundle up—once you’re out and moving, you’ll warm up.

Keep sugar off of your vegetables

I used to hate sweet potatoes. A few years ago, I realized this was due in large part to the fact that when I was growing up they were always served with brown sugar and marshmallows. Awful. Let there be no glazing of carrots this year. Sugar has no place on vegetables. There will be enough sugar in your favorite dessert. Glazing is for doughnuts. This year, find ways to make side dishes that are both delicious and nutritious.

Remember that the holidays come at the same time every year.

Your favorite holiday comes on the same day each year (for the most part). Those annual celebrations won’t catch you by surprise, so there’s not reason why you can’t plan for them. Unknown interruptions to your fitness program, such as car trouble or a sick child, can’t always be avoided. Celebrations come every year, so there’s no excuse. Use your smarts and creativity combined with some of the tips above to come up with a plan for celebrating that will allow you to enjoy the festivities without wrecking your fitness plan in the process. Keep at it and you’ll get a little better each year!

A Lighter and Brighter Season:

Heart-Healthy

Recipe Alternatives

Try these healthy heart friendly substitutes:

1. Swap the Eggs

TThe holiday season goes hand-in-hand with eating special foods. We plan our celebration meals with care to put our very best on the table for our loved ones. But when we think of traditional holiday meals, images of decadent foods full of butter and cream — followed by an endless array of sweets — might come to mind. They may taste good, but they’re not so good for your health or heart. Show your loved ones’ hearts some love this year by opting for heart-healthy ingredients in your recipes that are sure to get a lot of compliments. There are many alternatives you can use to make healthier (but just as delicious) savory dishes and baked goods. They taste just as good and won’t leave you feeling tired and bloated after your meal.

If your recipe calls for eggs- replace them with one of these healthier alternatives: ½ mashed banana, ¼ cup of unsweetened applesauce, ¼ cup of cooked oats, 1 tsp of baking soda, or ¼ cup of silken tofu blended. (All portions are the equivalent of 1 egg.)

2. Substitute the Butter

When butter is called for, try organic vegan butter using the same amount called for in the recipe. You won’t notice a difference in taste, and your heart will thank you! Alternatively, you can substitute half the amount required with applesauce or mashed avocado. Pureed prunes can even be used as a butter substitute.

3. Sweet Ways to Reduce Added Sugar

Most recipes can handle half the amount of sugar, or better yet – substitute for a healthier option. You may use an equal

amount of applesauce (the no-sugar-added variety) or choose natural sugars like 100% maple syrup, honey, coconut sugar, or monk fruit extract (my personal favorite). They’re healthier due to their lower glycemic index, and you’ll still get that sweet taste. You can also use 2/3 cup of pureed dates for each cup of sugar.

4. Pass on the Salt

Lowering the salt content doesn’t mean the recipe has to be bland. There are so many different herbs and spices available to us. These are delicious substitutes, so spice it up! Salt may also be replaced with half as much citrus juice or apple cider vinegar, which interact to bring out the dish’s natural flavors.

5. Ditch the Dairy

Swap cow’s milk for a plant-based variety.

Help Your Family Feel Whole

Eating heart-healthy doesn’t mean giving up favorite recipes. With a few tweaks here and there, you can enjoy family favorites without sacrificing taste — and potentially avoid the weight gain and higher cholesterol that can accompany this celebratory season. You can use these healthy alternatives for everyday meals to help you and your family have a healthy heart year-round.

Meet our Mechanic

HHis name is Anthony Brandolino. He’s been keeping busy at Bolingbrook Park District for over 12 years now, serving as a mechanic. Anthony is from a family of 3 generations of mechanics. According to Brandolino, he’s been working on cars ever since he could pick up a wrench. Prior to working here, he was employed by a local golf course.

When asked about his daily routine, Anthony replied, “I start off the day with vehicle inspections at 4:30 am before anyone else arrives.”

Brandolino is currently busy getting all the snow equipment ready for service. That’s a good thing because the first sight of snow arrived the evening of this interview!

Anthony inspects one of our many vehicles as we gear up for the winter months.

“Besides the winter season, the most challenging aspect of my job is actually using computers. I’m not computer savvy and it takes me a while to communicate using email. Fixing trucks is the easy part,” Brandolino states.

When asked about the more enjoyable aspects of his job, Anthony states, “I do like hopping on the mower and heading down to Com Ed Greenway. It gets me out of the garage. I love my job. Sometimes the guys can wear you thin. But, my favorite aspect of the job is working with a good team.”

Anthony Brandolino can be reached at (630) 783-6565 or at abrandolino@ bolingbrookparks.org.

Playgrounds Recycled and Reused Around the World

PPlaygrounds are more than just plastic or metal sturctures. They represent childhood and the value of our kids. Playgrounds contribute to the emotional, social, physical and academic well-being of a child. The power of play is immeasurable! We’re extremely proud to partner with Kids Around the World so that some of our old playgrounds can be reutilized in areas of need.

We’re excited to announce that the playground equipment from The Forest (1399 Carriage Ln) has been relocated to Budila, Romania. Part of our old equipment from Draftke Park (1125 Quail Run) has also traveled all the way to Bakhdida, Iraq!

Other structures scheduled to relocate next year include:

• The larger structure from Drafke Park playground which is going to Kenya.

• The old Century Park playground which is headed to Nigeria.

• The Indian Chase Meadows playground which will be shipped over to the Dominican Republic.

We love seeing the power of play find new life in places all over the world.

The Forest playground has found a new home in Budila, Romania.

2022 Mission: Bring the Community Back

TThe Bolingbrook Park District set-out to accomplish a large task in 2022. This mission was to bring the community back together. It seems so simple, but as we all know this proved harder than expected over the last few years. It was important that we focused on “community.” What exactly does that mean to Bolingbrook Park District? It means offering recreational activities that EVERYONE can enjoy. Check out how completed our mission in 2022!

Continued Playground Renovations Playgrounds and parks provide gathering spaces to our community. Bolingbrook Park District provides 50 public parks for the community to enjoy at their leisure. Whether you are looking to enjoy a nice walk on the trail, kick the soccer ball around with your kids, or enjoy a sunny afternoon pushing your grandchild on a swing, the option is available to every community member in all sections of Bolingbrook. These community assets continue to serve as the lifeblood of the park district. Five more playgrounds (Freedom Park, Sunset Park, Bradford Park, Community Park, and Winston Woods) were renovated in 2022 to ensure those assets are there for years to come. Balstrode Park and Erikson Park are scheduled to be completed in 2023.

Hosted Free Community Events

Community events are often an overlooked service the Park District provides. They are like the old friend that can often be taken for granted. The pandemic shined the light on these important activities.

Community events have been a service provided by the Park District for the last 52 years. Numerous partners help bring these important events to community and allow opportunities to highlight the best of what Bolingbrook has to offer.

Check out what was offered in 2022:

Winterfest

This community event highlighted just how much fun winter in Bolingbrook can be. Activities included a snowball slingshot, bonfire, games and more.

Week of the Young Child Celebration

This week-long celebration included a Tons of Trucks event, free open swim, a family movie night, and free classes for creative movement dance, family pound fit and Zumba, and Day One Sports.

This partnership between the Park District and Village provided entertainment to over 1,000 people per concert.

iFest Bolingbrook: International Festival of Cultures

Bolingbrook Park District was proud to partner with the Village of Bolingbrook and other community partners to provide iFest Bolingbrook 2022. This one-day celebration shined the spotlight on the many cultures that make Bolingbrook such a great community.

Movies in the Park

Five family-friendly movies were provided to community at various parks throughout town. One movie was held at AdventHealth Bolingbrook. AdventHealth has been a long-time partner helping us provide these opportunities for the community.

Visit Your Local Park

Bolingbrook Park District literally brought the fun to eight different neighborhoods throughout town with the Visit Your Local Park events this past summer. This program allowed the park district to reach families with transportation challenges. They were able to simply walk to their local park to enjoy fun activities, the climbing wall and trackless train.

RRyan Kertson began his career with Bolingbrook Park District in 2019. His schedule is busy as he oversees the district’s youth and adult athletic programs along with managing the Annerino Community Center. His passion for the field of parks and recreation began as a teenager with his first job as a t-ball coach for the New Lenox Park District. “It is still my favorite job to this day,” said Kertson. Ryan’s skills allowed him to expand into other roles with the district. He served as a day camp counselor, scorekeeper, coordinated the youth basketball league and planned a few events. “There is nothing better than watching a kid score a goal in soccer or make a basket in basketball for the first time. The pure exuberance is something special!” said Kertson.

As much as Ryan loved working at the park district, he wasn’t sure what his career path would be. Ryan also spent much of his time working with his father renovating and building homes for their family home construction/remodel business as well as

completing his degree from Illinois State University in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management. “I remodeled everything from basements, kitchens, bathrooms, decks, pergolas, playgrounds and more,” said Kertson. As much as Ryan loved working with his dad, he just couldn’t stay away from fulfillment the field of parks and recreation provides. “Events are a lot of work, but rewarding when the participants are appreciative of the work we all put in to provide fun for the whole family,” said Kertson.

Ryan’s first full-time parks and recreation job was with the Manhattan Park District as the Athletics and Events Coordinator. He then moved on to the Fox Valley Park District as the Athletic Supervisor at the Eola Community Center before coming to the Bolingbrook Park District. When Ryan isn’t working, he enjoys playing in adult softball leagues, cooking, completing home remodel projects and spending time with his wife, new baby girl, friends and family.

Ryan can be reached at rkertson@ bolingbrookparks.org or (630) 783-6509.

Northern Will County Special Recreation Association (NWCSRA) represents the partnership between Bolingbrook Park District, Lockport Township Park District, Plainfield Park District, the Village of Romeoville, Brookeridge Park District and JusticePark District.

Our mission is to provide meaningful recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities that enhance their overall quality of life.

INCLUSION SERVICES

NWCSRA works collaboratively with the park district to provide reasonable accommodations to individuals with a disability who wish to participate in a program through the park district. Individuals should be provided the opportunity to participate in recreation programs of their choice in the least restrictive environment.
