It has been a fun summer at Pelican Harbor Outdoor Aquatic Park since we opened back on June 5. There’s still time to come have fun at the pool before summer is over! Check out more pictures from this summer on page 4.

BRAC Jam _______________________________

W

We were bummed that we weren’t able to celebrate our 50th Anniversary last year in-style with a big event like we wanted to. But that isn’t going to stop us from celebrating a year later! We have a lot to celebrate including our anniversary, the 25th

Let’s Celebrate Like it’s 1996!

anniversary of the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex, and the completion of the renovation project as a result of the 2018 successful referendum ask. With that said, it’s time to throw a party and have some fun! BRAC opened up in 1996, which was the same year the Michael Jordan version of Space Jam was released. With the release of LeBron James’ Space Jam: A New Legacy this year, it made sense for us to create a community-wide event with a Space Jam theme.

So, we’re excited to invite you to BRAC Jam on Saturday, October 2 from 1:00-4:00 pm. This is a free event that will have tons of fun activities for you to participate in (for all ages), along with touring the renovated facility, and have a chance to win 90’s-themed gift baskets and other fun surprises. Stick around to watch the original Space Jam at 6:00 pm. We hope you’re ready to party like it’s 1996! For more information, visit www. bolingbrookparks.org/bracjam.

Hello, Bolingbrook friends! I hope you are doing well and that you all had a fun summer! It has been wonderful to see activity in our parks, facilities, and natural areas. As fall approaches, we are looking forward to continuing to offer new and improved programs and services. We continue to be committed to bringing you as many in-person activities as we can, with an important focus wellness and safety. I hope you have had an opportunity to visit a few of our renovated playgrounds at Plimmer, The Forest, Ivanhoe, Drafke, and Century Parks. By the end of 2021, we will have completed 14 of our 21 playground replacements as a result of the successful 2018 referendum! We are also nearing completion of the pathway and bridge over the Lily Cache Creek by Drafke Park, which you can read more about on page 13.

Believe it or not, both BRAC and Space Jam are celebrating 25 years in 2021 and we want to celebrate in style! There will be free and fun activities with a Space Jam theme and the showing of the original Space Jam at 6:00 pm.

With the new conference, gymnasts can now be part of the team all the way through high school.

New Conference, New Opportunities for Illusions Gymnastics Team

P

_______________________________

Prior to this year, if you were a member of the Bolingbrook Park District Illusions Gymnastics Team, you could only compete in meets as a team until you graduated 8th grade. Under the direction of manager Laney Haupert, the team has made the decision to transition to the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) to allow gymnasts that are in high school to continue to train and compete as a team at Bolingbrook Park District. “This offers a whole new opportunity for gymnasts in Bolingbrook that wasn’t previously available,” said Haupert. “Anytime we’ve had gymnasts who want to continue with the sport in high school, we could only assist them with their skills individually, but not provide them with an opportunity to compete all the way through high school. It’s very exciting to see what our team will be able to do with the added years.” Making the change to AAU adds an element of credibility to Bolingbrook Park District gymnastics. AAU is a non-profit organization that was created in 1888 and is recognized for promoting and facilitating 41 different sports for amateur athletics. The Illusions Team will become a member of the AAU Central League and will compete in the Gymnastics of Illinois Junior Organization (GIJO), which will be their conference within the AAU Central

League. The conference is comprised of 29 other teams in Illinois, which includes a mix of private gyms and park districts like Romeoville, Schaumburg, and Elmhurst. In this conference, they’ll compete against top competition in the state with the opportunity to travel across the Midwest. “AAU will bring about a lot of exciting changes to our program,” said Haupert. “We are excited to see what our gymnasts do with the added years of training and how they stack up against the added competition.” The Bolingbrook Illusions Gymnastics Team is an award-winning team that is comprised of gymnasts ages 6-18 years old. They train at the Annerino Community Center (201 Recreation Dr.) in the gymnastics gym. Team meets include competing in the four major apparatus’ of women’s gymnastics: • Vault • Balance Beam • Uneven Bars • Floor Exercise The next session of gymnastics begins the week of August 23. Sign-up for classes by visiting our Fall Digital Program Guide at www.bolingbrookparks.org. For questions and additional information about becoming part of the Illusions Gymnastics Team, contact our Gymnastics/Cheer/Ninja Manager, Laney Haupert at lhaupert@ bolingbrookparks.org.

Back on June 12 at our Super Science Class, participants learned how water can be used to visualize sound waves, experimented with pencils to create a temporary, watertight seal, and even exploded a cola bottle 20 feet into the air using breath mints! At “Skulls, Tracks, & Scat” on July 17, they learned how naturalists identify animals from the evidence they leave behind: tracks and scat by handling and classifying a variety of amazing skills from mammals, birds,

and reptiles. The free fun continues this fall thanks to our friends at Meijer of Bolingbrook. On August 14, we’ll be showing off our resident rock stars at Reptile Rockstar’s on 1:00-2:00 pm. Meet our turtles, snakes, and bearded dragons! Explore your creative side in nature! On September 11 from 1:30-2:30 pm at Naturally Artistic, do a take-home art project for all ages, inspired by the beauty of Hidden Oaks!

Registration is required and space is limited for all free nature events. Visit www. bolingbrookparks.org/freenature to sign up. Meijer has two locations in Bolingbrook at 755 E Boughton Rd. and 225 N Weber Rd. Find their weekly advertisement at www. meijer.com/weeklyad.

Director of Business & Technology

Debbie began her career in 1980 as an Office Manager in the private sector and her love for computers started when her boss purchased an Apple 2 computer that used floppy disks. She caught on quickly and was asked to train others in the office on how to use it. Her career took her to different businesses where she did everything from creating custom integrations at a data management company to selling and leasing computers. She landed at Bolingbrook Park District in 2000 when she was hired as the Information Systems Manager. She’s been here ever since and has held her current position since 2012. “I love it here and I love the people that I work with. They are by far the hardest working and most passionate people I’ve ever worked with,” said Chase. “I also enjoy walking in everyday and hearing kids laugh and adults talking and just having fun.” She aligns business and technology needs for the district, allowing improved business process and enhanced project success. In her time here she’s earned certifications as a Microsoft Certified Professional, Microsoft

Longer Walks and Bike Rides Coming Soon to the Lily Cache Bike Path! Pathway Connection Project Update

This map shows the full scope of the Pathway Connection Project. The main piece of the project is the 62’ bridge that is set to be installed this fall.

A

_______________________________

As you’ve walked or ridden your bike on the path that runs east of Weber Rd. through Drafke Park, you’ve been forced to turnaround at Lily Cache Creek. What you may not know is that beyond the creek, the path continues east and through Veterans Parkway. As part of the 2018 successful referendum ask, you can now extend your walk or ride by going over a newly built bridge that will connect the two paths!

This project has been worked on tirelessly since the referendum was passed in 2018. A lot has been accomplished in preparation for the bridge to be installed this fall, including: • Obtaining Prairie Path Wetland Park and renovating existing path • Design work competed with Civil Engineers, US Army Corps of Engineers for paths and bridge • Approvals of sidewalk and bridge plans from the Village of Bolingbrook, Illinois American Water, and the Will County Division of Transportation

Submittal and approval of bids for construction and installation of bridge As we move toward fall, the final stages of the bridge installment are being completed. The bridge will be 62’ in length and 10’ wide. When delivered, the bridge will be installed all in once piece. For more information about the Lily Cache Pathway Connection Project, and the rest of the 2018 Referendum Delivery Plan, visit www.bolingbrookparks.org/ referendum.

Bolingbrook Park District Provides Fun Recreation Programs to Valley View School District _______________________________

V

Valley View School District (VVSD) approached Bolingbrook Park District staff earlier in January to provide programs as part of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program. This program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children. Bolingbrook Park District provides dance, fitness, and nature programs at participating

elementary and middle schools during the school year. The purpose of these programs is to show how recreation can have a positive impact on kids lives, not only in the program, but translate to other aspects, like academics. This summer, the team at Pelican Harbor provided swim lessons for elementary-aged kids. The middle school-aged kids learned what it’s like to run the pool operation and got a taste of what it takes to be a lifeguard. In all, there were 122 kids that went through the program this summer.

“These programs provide a fun outlet for those families and at the same time, demonstrates the true benefit of what our programs do for the community on a daily basis,” said Michael Baiardo, director of recreation and facilities. “Now that it’s summer, we are happy to be able to teach an important life skill like swimming to kids that may not have had the opportunity to.”

Nick Kuras carefully mows the outfield at Bulldog Park. It takes skill and patience to make sure the grass is level and all the clippings don’t end up in the infield.

Lupe Chaparro is making sure the dirt by the home plate is leveled and compact before adding new chalk lines in preparation for a little league game.

Bolingbrook Park District has 26 fields that are used for baseball and softball games. It typically takes about 30-45 minutes for two of our crew members to prepare a field for game use. This includes dragging the infield and chalking the lines. The most popular fields are at Remington Lakes Sports Complex. The fields there are used six days a week.
