Pelican Passes Available to Purchase Now! _______________________________

Believe it or not, summer is coming! We could all use a little sun and float around the lazy river to cheer us up. The aquatics team is so excited to have the Pelican Harbor Outdoor Aquatic Park back in full operation for the summer of 2022. “Our team has done a wonderful job navigating through the last two years, but we are ready to have a normal summer at Pelican Harbor,” said Sarah Sielisch, Aquatic Manager.

Pelican Harbor offers two membership options. The first is an annual membership that gives members access to the pool all year. The second membership option is a Summer Pelican Pass. Summer Pelican Passes are available for purchase on April 1. Pelican Pass holders enjoy unlimited swimming during public swim and lap swim from May 27 through September 30. “The Pelican Pass option is perfect for families that may not have time during the school year to enjoy the pool, but are looking for fun activities in the summer. The value is an

absolute steal when you think you can use it as often as you want for the entire summer,” said Sielisch. The Pelican Pass rate for Bolingbrook residents is only $55 and $64 for nonresidents. Previous Pelican Pass holders may renew their passes online. New Pelican Pass holders may purchase their passes at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex, 200 S. Lindsey Lane or Annerino Community Center, 201 Recreation Drive. Race you to the lazy river! bolingbrookparks.org

Hello Bolingbrook Friends! Summer is nearly upon us! Smiles, laughter, excitement, and a ton of outdoor fun is what summer is all about at Bolingbrook Park District. Our team has been making plans to bring the fun to you in 2022! Whether your family splashes into Pelican Harbor, or your kiddos enjoy fun filled days with Camp Alotta Fun, or you enjoy a quiet stroll on one of our many bike paths, Bolingbrook Park District provides so many wonderful opportunities to recreate in our community. You can golf, play pickleball or tennis, basketball, or have fun at a skate park. Of course, you can also enjoy our amazing programs like dance, gymnastics, ninja, and you can get your fit on at Lifestyles Fitness Center. We will also be officially dedicating our new path and bridge over the Lily Cache Creek at Drafke Park on our Day of Play on May 7. This bridge was the final piece to our pathway connection from east to west. We will also be dedicating the new Century Park that same day. This year we are bringing back the portable climbing wall and trackless train, which you will see at events throughout the Village. You will enjoy free concerts, free movies in the park, and free fun events throughout the summer. Our capital improvement (referendum implementation) plan continues. You will see new playgrounds at Bradford, Community, Freedom, Sunset, and Winston Woods this summer.

Block Party Packages are Back! _______________________________

T

Things are starting to work its way back to normal again as we re-introduce the Block Party Packages to our summer offerings. After having to suspend this service the last two years, we are certainly excited to offer them again. “It has been frustrating not being able to provide services that we know the community loves,” said Christy Sorenson, Program/Event Manager. “We are so excited to bring the Block Party back because it brings people together.” The Block Party Package is a free service to eligible Bolingbrook residents planning a block party on weekends. The package provides entertainment for all. Children can enjoy rides on the Community Express Trackless Train and anyone over 42 inches/50 pounds may have fun climbing the portable climbing wall. Due to the extreme popularity of the Block Party Package, availability is limited

to neighborhood block parties and public service organization events. The Block Party Package is available to Bolingbrook Residents Memorial Day through Labor Day on the weekends. Each block & homeowners-association is allowed to book the Block Party Package for one block party per year. Block Party barricades must also be rented from the Village of Bolingbrook for Block Party usage. Follow these steps to make your Block Party planning easier: Step 1 - Complete a Village of Bolingbrook Block Party/Open Air Public Meeting Application and complete the Bolingbrook Park District Block Party Application and return it to the Village of Bolingbrook, 375 W. Briarcliff Road or to a Bolingbrook Park District Community Center a minimum of three weeks prior to your community event/ block party. Step 2 – Please make your first, second and third choice for the trackless train and climbing wall at offset times. We will attempt to honor your first choice but due to the popularity of the Block Party Package, your second or third choice may be honored. In order to qualify for the Block

Party Package, 75% of the residents on your block must sign the Village of Bolingbrook Block Party/Open Air Public Meeting Form and sign the climbing wall waiver at the same time the Village of Bolingbrook Form is signed. Step 3 – Two weeks after you have turned in your Bolingbrook Park District Block Party Form and Village of Bolingbrook Block Party/ Open Air Public Meeting Application, please call (630) 739-1700 to confirm that the Park District has received your forms. Step 4 – The Park District will tentatively schedule your block party package after approval of your Block Party from the Village of Bolingbrook. Step 5 – You will be contacted by phone to confirm your train and wall times one week prior to your party. A confirmed copy of your application will be mailed and/or emailed to you after approval. Block Party application packets will be available starting May 1 at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex, Annerino Community Center and Bolingbrook Village Hall. If you have further questions, please call (630) 739-1700.

Park District Completes Community Pulse Check B _______________________________

Bolingbrook Park District has a history of reaching out to the community to garner feedback to assist in the development of future plans. Every three to four years a community-wide survey is completed to gauge resident satisfaction and discover future needs. The last survey was completed in June of 2020. “Our last communitywide survey was a unique one since it was completed at the height of the pandemic,” said Ron Oestreich, Executive Director. “It was a great time to hear from our residents as we were going through truly unprecedented times.” Feedback received showed a need for updating our facilities and a desire for more digestible smaller communication pieces. “Our team took the feedback from our community to heart and acted on it,” said Oestreich. The renovation of the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex was completed in 2020.

Ten playgrounds were updated, with five more planned for this year. A new website was launched this past year. The newsletter was introduced in 2020 to share more information about overall district operations. Numerous other projects were completed as well. “We know how hard our team worked to make improvements while navigating through the pandemic. We felt it was important to complete a pulse check as a follow-up from 2020’s survey to see if our community noticed the improvements and to discover new needs that may have arose,” said Oestreich. The Park District asked Customer Lifecyle, LLC of Bolingbrook, who completed the 2020 survey, to oversee this process again. The research consisted of five 45-minute in-depth interviews with participants from the 2020 focus groups. “We were excited to hear that our changes have been noticed by the community,” said

Oestreich. “The feedback also reinforced that we need to continue to work on planned improvements moving forward.” Areas of focus include enhanced training for instructors to improve overall quality, continued investments in our facilities, adding more events that speak to various interests in the community, working to involve more teens in programming, and continuing to improve our overall communications. “The good news is that our team has already been working on these areas and we know we are going in the right direction,” said Oestreich. “Stay tuned for details on a Teen Night at Pelican Harbor and watch out for all the fun we have planned this summer.” The District will continue to monitor feedback from the community to ensure we adapt as needed. The next community-wide survey will be planned for 2024. bolingbrookparks.org

Introducing the Bolingbrook Park District

DANCE ACADEMY! musicality, and spatial awareness. This is important to foster a love of dance.

B

Bolingbrook Park District has a long history of offering high quality dance instruction for all ages. Offering everything from toddler classes to adult classes, an afterschool program, and even a performance company. All of these programs have one thing in common, quality age-appropriate instruction. Looking to the future, we will continue this tradition by bringing all of our unique dance programs into one cohesive department with the introduction of the Bolingbrook Park District Dance Academy. “We have seen a lot of changes throughout the past couple years. Our hope is that the rebranding of our dance department will allow for growth and cohesion within our department,” said Lindsey Pollina, Dance Program Manager. The BPD Dance Academy offers professional instruction in all styles of dance from dancers ages 18 months to adults. With our outstanding and passionate teaching staff, our dance academy is one of the best in the state, nationally-recognized, and progressive in its programming.

10

Where the fun is!

What students gain from the Bolingbrook Park District Dance Academy: • Confidence • Coordination • Strength • Focus • Teamwork “We have a lot in the works for the upcoming years including dance workshops, updating our curriculum, and working towards the reintroduction of our performance company,” said Pollina. “We are excited for our future.” There are opportunities for all levels of dancers to ensure that there truly is a place for everyone. Toddler Dance Classes (ages 18 months-7 years) Toddler programs are geared for kids ages 18 months-7 years old. Dancers gain confidence, coordination, strength, and focus all while having fun. Classes are structured to be enjoyable and engaging while incorporating imaginative play,

Youth & Teen Classes (ages 7-18 years) Youth & teen dance classes are structured for ages 7-18 years old. Class offerings range from beginner to advanced levels and are great for dancers looking to progress in a certain skill, or try something new. The Dance Academy focuses on teamwork, effort, energy, and measuring success through personal improvement and completion of goals. Our passionate and energetic instructors will provide affordable, high-quality instruction to give every dancer the best experience possible. After School Dance Classes (school aged kids) The BPD Dance Academy’s Powerdance Program is in place to offer a fun and safe environment for school age kids to be introduced to dance with their friends. It takes place right after school at select schools to make it easier for kids to participate. Some students may want to progress into the more technical aspects of dance and choose to take other Dance Academy classes. Other students may simply want to enjoy a fun and engaging opportunity to dance with their friends. In the end, everyone gets the opportunity to enjoy dance. Adult Dance Classes (ages 18 years & up) Adult classes are geared toward those ages 18 years and older. A variety of participation options and classes from drop-in classes to multi-week class sessions are offered to

meet the unique needs of adults. Classes are offered all year, so there is always an opportunity to come dance. All dancers are welcome regardless of the level of experience. BPD DanceForce Company (Performing Company) BPD DanceForce Company is the awardwinning, nationally-acclaimed performing dance company within the BPD Dance

Academy. The entire company studies and performs all styles of dance, and has training at multiple levels. DanceForce is an amazing way to take a dancer’s training to the next level. This performance company is a yearlong commitment for those who want to excel at dance. As you can see, the strong tradition of dance within the Bolingbrook Park District continues. “We are excited for the future

and can’t wait to see our program continue to grow and provide opportunities for all levels of dancers,” said Pollina. “Dance is something you can enjoy throughout your life. Bolingbrook Made a Difference in 2021

Bolingbrook Park District is always looking for ways we can positively impact our community. One way to do that is through partnerships with organizations that can help the community recycle. We are currently a Tree Machine partner with USAgain. You may have seen the green and white collection box at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex. These boxes are used to collect reusable clothes and shoes. In 2021, the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex collected 7,203 pounds of clothes and shoes. The social and environmental impacts are huge by saving these items from landfills.
