Finally, the snow is gone, the sun has decided to come out, and it’s time to get outside for some family fun! Our team has been waiting for this day to get the community back together and recreate. We’re excited to bring you two new events to kick off the spring.

The first event is our first-ever Kids Garage Sale on Saturday, April 24 at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex. For just $5, your kids can set out all their used stuff to sell them. This is a great way to spring clean and teach your kids about being an entrepreneur. The second event is on Saturday, May 22. If you’ve got a sweet kite that is in need of some airtime, this is your event! The “Go

Fly A Kite” event is just that - get outside and fly some kites! If you don’t have a kite, no worries. The entry fee of $3 gets you a kite kit that you can personalize before you fly. Visit www.bolingbrookparks.org/events to register for these activities. If you flip through to page 3, you’ll see more information about these events and what have in store for summer!

Hello, Bolingbrook Friends! Summer is almost here! We have been making plans to bring a ton of fun in 2021. Sunshine and warmth means laughter on the playgrounds, happy smiling faces in our parks and on our trails, excitement on our sports fields, splashing and fun at Pelican Harbor, great sounds at our concerts, running and playing with the return of Camp Alotta Fun, great golf experiences at Boughton Ridge, fishing and nature fun at Hidden Lakes and Hidden Oaks, health and wellness at Lifestyles Fitness, and programs, programs, programs! The summer of 2021 is just around the corner and we are ready. Bolingbrook Park District is committed to bringing you as many in-person activities as we can, with an important focus on wellness and safety. Please be sure to check our website and visit our Summer Digital Program Guide available April 26 for details on your favorite summer activities. Our Capital Improvement/Referendum Implementation Plan continues this year. You will see new playgrounds at Plimmer, The Forest, Ivanhoe, Drafke, and Century Parks. Our target is a mid-summer completion. The other major project is a new parking lot and drive at Central Park/Annerino Community Center. The past year has been challenging for all of us. Your Park District stands with you! The board and staff of Bolingbrook Park District very much appreciate your support more than you will ever know. We are excited to return to fun and roll out an awesome plan for summer activities. Enjoy! Sincerely, Ron Oestreich, Executive Director

What is a Ninja? Dream Big Work Hard

Never Give Up

______________________________

a Ages 18 mo. & up Skill Development & Classes Team Gymnastics

For more information, visit www. bolingbrookparks.org/gymnastics

4

Where the fun is!

A ninja is someone who has loads of energy and is ready to direct it in a positive way through creative movement. They will use a combination of gymnastics, martial arts, and obstacle course training to have fun while being safe and responsible. Ninjas flip, jump, climb, tumble, run, and slide. Coaches will guide ninjas to build confidence, focus on listening skills, and manners. Ninjas are ready for anything. If your child is ready to be a Ninja, we’re ready for them. Classes range from kids ages 18 months to 13 years old. “What’s great about the program is that there is more than one level, similar to martial arts,” said Laney Haupert, program manager. “Our program has three levels

currently, but can expand to have five. So, the further you go, the more advanced (and fun) being a ninja can be!” Being a ninja is not just “gymnastics for boys,” either. Classes are co-ed and everyone is welcome to participate. A main difference between ninja and gymnastics is that the skills taught in ninja don’t require independent work on a specific skill or routine. Ninjas do everything together and skills are constantly being taught and reinforced. “This is the perfect program for all kids that have a surplus of energy and is the perfect solution from having to sit on a computer,” said Haupert. “There’s not much down time, we’re always moving around and having fun safely.” For more information about Ninja Zone and how-to sign-up, please visit www. bolingbrookparks.org/ninja.

Bolingbrook Park District Fires Up New Youth Sports Program A lifetime of fun begins at the All-New Day One Sports Academy

E

______________________________

Everyone has a “Day One.” It could be for starting a new diet or workout routine, it could be the first day at a new job, anything. It is exciting because it’s a fresh start and a beginning to a new journey with the end result being unknown. The new youth sports program at Bolingbrook Park District is taking that exact approach. Anything can happen, but it has to start with a Day One. The philosophy is simple: • Learn the basics and fundamentals of sports. • Include everyone. Nobody is left on the sidelines. Everyone gets to participate. • Have fun! This is the true baseline of sports, play because we want to and because it’s fun. • Foster life-long skills to build an active lifestyle.

Micro-Soccer is a great introduction to teamwork and learning the fundamentals.

Little Sluggers T-Ball allows kids and parents to learn and have fun together.

“Our hope is that one day, when parents don’t know what to do with all their kids old t-shirts and they decide to make a quilt, that their Day One Sports Academy shirt is front and center,” said Ryan Kertson. The beauty of this is that no matter where you end up, you can look back on the Day One Sports Academy and wherever it led you. Sports can teach much more than technique. We’re looking to teach teamwork, inclusion, respect, and equality so that the kids that move on and upward in the program are prepared for anything. Programs begin the first week of June and are geared for ages 2-13.

Sports programs include: • Basketball • Soccer • Track & Field • Parent/Kid Sports Mania • Baseball • T-Ball “We encourage people to take more than one class and try all sorts of sports to find what they like,” said Kertson. “There’s a lot to do and we look forward to seeing kids learn, grow, and have fun together.” For information, please visit www. bolingbrookparks.org/dayone or look for the summer digital program guide that is available starting April 26. bolingbrookparks.org

Garlic Mustard - Be Gone! You can volunteer at Hidden Oaks Conservation Area & other locations!

Garlic Mustard is an invasive species that our Natural Resources Team removes every year.

______________________________

N

No, it’s not a disgusting sounding condiment, but Garlic Mustard, Alliaria Petiolate is a fast-growing plant that produces small white flowers. It’s considered an invasive species, so if there’s an opportunity to remove them and maintain Bolingbrook’s cleanliness and beauty, the Natural Resources Team at Bolingbrook Park District is all over it. In an effort to remove this from our natural areas, the team participates in the annual DuPage Country River Sweep, which is an event put together by The Conservation Foundation. Garlic Mustard removal is a key component of the river sweep. Volunteers spend a day removing garbage, debris, and invasive species from DuPage County streams to keep them clean. A section by Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm is always part of it. Now in its 30th year, they have had more than 9,000 volunteers and removed nearly 300 tons of garbage. This years’ sweep is on Saturday, May 15 from 9:00 am-noon. So, why is this plant removed? Due to the 8

Where the fun is!

fast growth of Garlic Mustard, it shades out other plants, not allowing them to grow or germinate. The result, if not treated, can lead to the plant taking over an entire woodland. So it certainly takes more than one day to remove it. In 2021, Bolingbrook Park District will be hosting four volunteer days to help clean up the Hidden Oaks Conservation Area. The first being on April 10 from 9:0011:00 am. You can pre-register for free at www.bolingbrookparks.org/volunteer. The Volunteer Day on April 10 will be solely dedicated to clearing Garlic Mustard from the woodland area on the south side of Indian Boundary Park. The DuPage River Sweep and other volunteer days are a great opportunity to educate the community and get people involved in the restoration and preservation of our natural landscapes,” said Dan Finn, natural resources, horticulture, and turf manager. “Whether it be collecting garbage or removing an invasive plant species like garlic mustard, these work days can have a significant positive impact on the ecosystem by creating the space and proper habitat for the native flora and fauna to thrive.” To participate in the DuPage Country River Sweep, please contact Dan Finn at (630) 7836563 or dfinn@bolingbrookparks.org.

Bolingbrook Garden Club uses Hidden Oaks Community Garden to Grow and Donate Vegetables ______________________________

L

Longtime Bolingbrook resident Dennis Dill is one of the 20 members of the Bolingbrook Garden Club. He and the team spent last summer growing vegetables at the community gardens located at the Hidden Oaks Conservation Area. In total, they donated nearly 550 pounds worth of vegetables to the West Suburban Community Food Pantry last year. 2019 was rough with the bad weather and weeds. But in 2020, Dennis was proud of the results of his seven plots, with one solely dedicated to growing tomatoes. They grow everything from squash, cabbage, tomatoes, hot peppers, and carrots. From July-September, Dennis would make trips to the food pantry about every three days. “I can’t eat all this stuff and I like to grow it,” said Dennis. “The pantry normally gets canned food for food drives so these fresh vegetables are a nice change of pace.”

Spend your summer gardening at the Community Gardens located at Hidden Oaks Conservation Area (419 Trout Farm Rd). Now retired after 45 years in the transportation business, Dennis enjoys his time working in the gardens and is extremely passionate about everything that happens in the plots. “I’ve always wanted to do it,” said Dennis. “My parents, when they retired, maintained a big garden and I just enjoy being outside in

the garden and having the opportunity to help people.” The Community Garden Plots are currently on sale and can be purchased at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex (200 Lindsey Ln.). To learn more about the plots, please visit www.bolingbrookparks. org/gardenplots.

SUMMER FUN! We know you’ve been waiting and we’ve got it!

I

______________________________

It’s been a long time since we last held an outdoor event that had over 50 people. During that time, we’ve provided fun for you to do when the ZOOM meetings started, now we’ve got fun for you when the ZOOM meetings are OVER. The most important date of 2021 will be Monday, April 26. Why? That’s the day the Summer Digital Program Guide is live on www. bolingbrookparks.org. Registration for Bolingbrook residents with a valid ID begins that day, too. Go ahead and mark your calendar and set a reminder on your phone. Things will sound very similar at the Roger C. Claar Performing Arts Center when an exciting line-up of bands hit the stage for our free Wednesday Night Summer Concerts. They’ll be held every Wednesday at 7:30 pm starting June 2. Stay tuned to our website for our official announcement regarding the bands for our summer concerts. We’re very excited to launch a bunch of new events this summer, including playing Mario Kart on a 20-foot outdoor projection screen. Check out the list of events below:

During the week, we’ll have plenty of fun for kids at summer camp. The biggest and most exciting change is that Camp Alotta Fun is back this year and is once again being held at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex after two years at the Annerino Community Center. “I’ve been working the summer camp here at Bolingbrook Park District for nearly 20 years and the beginning of camp is always an exciting time for everyone,” said Kai Wahlgren, director of recreation. “I’m looking forward to seeing everyone running around and having fun.”

Teams are trying to make camp seem as normal as possible with some changes to keep everyone safe. There won’t be any off-site trips this year, but we’ll have plenty of special visitors come throughout the summer to make up for it.
