Higher Education student wins series of top accolades Bournville College Higher Education student Daniel Wyatt has won no less than 4 awards over the last 12 months. The impressive collection is made up of two Bournville College awards (Principals’ Award & Care in the Community Award) and two awards from the Association of Colleges (Inspirational Sport Student of the Year for the West Midlands & Inspirational Sport Student of the Year – Birmingham). Daniel is currently studying a HND in Sports Coaching and Development; a course that he hopes will help him reach his goal of becoming a coach at a top footballing club in the UK.

Since becoming a Bournville College student Daniel has always worked hard and gone the extra mile, as his tutor Rob Biondi explains: “Daniel has been a pleasure to teach over the past 2 years; starting on the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and progressing on to HND in Sports Coaching and Development. He has always shown great effort and enthusiasm during all theory and practical lessons. He has also shown a desire to take the lead on group tasks and a particular willingness to lead and coach others during practical sessions.”

In order to give back to the community and further his career prospects Daniel conducts a coaching session once a week at the college for local residents who have disabilities. Daniel discussed the training sessions and explained the benefit it could have on his career: “It’s a great thing to do, I really enjoy it, but more importantly those who take part in the sessions also enjoy them. I think it’ll be a great boost to me in the future because I’m getting hands on experience in coaching.” Daniel went on to speak about his time at Bournville College: “It’s a great place to study, there’s loads on offer, which creates a range of different opportunities for students.”

Bournville College student wins Silver Award at the Skills Show Bournville College Theatrical Media Make-Up student Faye Cleaver won Silver Award in prestigious Skills Show competition. Faye competed against a range of talented students from colleges across the country, her skill and talent was there for all to see as she picked up the illustrious Silver Award. The Skills Show is the nation’s largest free to attend skills and careers event. Faye’s tutor Hernam Najran commented on Faye’s success: “I am very proud of Faye’s achievements. This competition can be very testing, even for an experienced make-up artist but to think she has only started her course in theatrical media make up last year, she has come so far in such a short space of time, she is a credit to the college, her family and friends. To be placed silver is a massive accolade in such a prestigious competition and I’m very excited to see Faye’s future successes.” Hernam went on to discuss the design which won Faye the Silver Award: “Faye’s design was fantastic, it was well thought out and effective. She has worked so hard, putting in a lot of hours outside of college, she pushed

herself to produce a very unique and striking design demonstrating level 3 skills and techniques which she learned in a short space of time. Overall her design was very original, creative and imaginative.” If you’re interested in studying a Theatrical Media Hair and Make-Up course at Bournville College, visit www.bournville.ac.uk/beauty-therapy or call 0121 477 1300.

Mural for the gym The Foundation Diploma Art & Design students were given a commission to paint a mural in the college gym – Urban Fitness. The students were split into four teams. Each team had to come up with a design to inspire the spinning class, to spur them on, as they only had a blank wall to look at when they were peddling hard. The designs were posted on gym’s Facebook page and the gym members balloted for their favourite design. Every student got the chance to paint elements of the design and the project was a truly joint effort. The winning team was offered a six-month free membership to the gym by manager, David Dyson.
