MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN It is with great pride that I present the 2012 student awards in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto. In this report, you will read about how some of our impressive students have benefited from the generosity of our friends, and what they hope to accomplish after graduation. You will also learn why some of our donors have chosen to make a positive impact by supporting higher education. Ranked first in Canada and 16th globally (Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings), the University of Toronto offers talented young people unparalleled access to some of the world’s leading scholars and scientists. Every day they are generating new ideas and making transformative discoveries. With strengths in every major field across the humanities, sciences and social sciences, the Faculty of Arts and Science is at the heart of this globally-oriented research and education powerhouse. This is an extraordinary wellspring of expertise, creativity, innovation and promise! These individuals are key to fulfilling U of T’s commitment to answer the world’s big questions. In every sector—government, industry, business, scientific research, culture, education, health, human rights and more—our graduates are stepping up to make a far-reaching and positive difference in their communities and around the world. There is no better long-term investment in the future health and prosperity of our society than an investment in the education of young people at a time of enormous personal growth and discovery. That is why giving to scholarships to support Arts and Science students is such a powerful statement—and why it can make such a demonstrable difference. Thank you for joining us as we prepare our students to enter our extraordinary alumni community of thinkers, visionaries and innovators. We are grateful to have the support of alumni and friends, government and corporations, foundations and community groups, faculty and staff, as we meet our commitment to educate tomorrow’s global citizens.

Best wishes,

Meric S. Gertler, FRSC Dean and Professor of Geography and Planning Goldring Chair in Canadian Studies

I’ve been fascinated by computers ever since my father, who is an accountant, introduced me to them when I was in fifth grade in Hong Kong. When it came time to do my masters, U of T was always my first choice. It has the best reputation in computer science, especially among graduate programs for my particular interest, which is database and storage systems. But I wouldn’t have been able to come to U of T, and to Canada, without the financial support of scholarships.

TIANZHENG WANG, a graduate student in Computer Science, is the recipient of the Wolfond Scholarship in Wireless Information Technology. 2| Faculty of Arts & Science

The Asian Institute at U of T and the Dr. Chu Scholarship have given me the most amazing opportunities to study and explore and to combine my aspirations as a filmmaker with my fascination with Chinese politics. This interdisciplinarity is so rare and so valuable to my studies. I’ve traveled to Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong to study contemporary Chinese politics and cinemas, and I am excited to be returning to China and Taiwan to continue my research and to initiate my second documentary project on cross-strait migration.

BETTY XIE, an undergraduate student in Asia Pacific Studies and Cinema Studies, 6| Faculty of Arts & Science is the recipient of the Dr. David Chu Scholarship in Asia Pacific Studies, Dr. David Chu Student Leadership Award and a University of Toronto Scholarship.

JILL WAGMAN, Managing Principal, Eckler Ltd., donor representative; PETER QIANG, an undergraduate student in Actuarial Science, and recipient of the Samuel Eckler Scholarship in Actuarial Science.

With Sam Eckler’s passing last summer, our firm wanted to find a way to honour him, his remarkable life, and his dedication to the actuarial profession. In addition to being Sam Eckler’s alma mater, the University of Toronto is a world-class institution with a leading actuarial program. Establishing a scholarship is the perfect tribute to Sam’s legacy and the values that continue to drive the firm he founded: education, integrity, discipline, charity and accountability. We are confident that this scholarship will help worthy students of actuarial science achieve academic excellence, in part, by lightening their personal financial burden. Jill Wagman

Eckler Ltd. and the family and friends of Samuel Eckler have also recently established the Samuel Eckler Memorial Scholarship in Actuarial Science.

World hunger is one of the most acute problems we face. Moral theorists tend to argue that the solution is to acknowledge our duties of charity and benevolence towards the poor and hungry. But to think of them as mere recipients of aid and charity undermines their status as independent persons. In my thesis I argue that we acknowledge their status as equal and independent persons better when we recognize their human right to food. As a Jackman Fellow I am part of a community of scholars in the humanities with shared interests who nonetheless come from diverse academic backgrounds. One of the greatest things about being part of such a community is that it’s intellectually challenging to be made to look outside of your own discipline, to be confronted with questions and perspectives different from your own. It forces you to be more rigorous with your thinking and to make it more 14| Facultyaccessible. of Arts & Science widely

PETER and CHRISTINA JOSE (donors), and their children, Eric and Maya

We established this scholarship in memory of my grandmother, who passed away in 2011. She was born in Nepal and orphaned at a young age. Raised in poverty, she nevertheless developed a strong sense of obligation to charity and unfailingly donated a portion of her meagre earnings to local temples. At 14, she fled to India and was taken in by a lady who offered her a choice: a lifetime of servitude or marriage to a man many years her senior. She chose marriage and, although illiterate, absorbed much of her husband’s Chinese culture and language. She dutifully passed this heritage on to her five children, who later immigrated to Canada and sent for her when they had the means. My grandmother was always a spiritual individual. She volunteered at the Buddhist temple she attended, and when health permitted, she participated in conferences and pilgrimages. Near the end of her life, members of her congregation, including many monks, cancelled travel plans in order to pray and hold vigil at her bedside. This scholarship is intended to be a legacy that honours her faith and her deep respect for higher education. We hope it will assist students who aspire to a level of academic achievement of which she could only dream.

My research into racism and colourism and how Harlem Renaissance writers have used coffee and chocolate as a metaphor for skin colour wouldn’t be possible without the support of a place like the Jackman Humanities Institute. I was drawn to studying race and representation through my major in Aboriginal Studies, an interdisciplinary program that welcomes students from all backgrounds and highlights political, cultural, contemporary and historical Indigenous issues. This experience has not only been enlightening but encouraging, helping me see my own potential as a scholar who hopes to continue to pursue ethnic and women’s studies at a graduate level.

U of T provides opportunities unlike any university in Canada. I’ve been able to work and conduct research with talented faculty since my second year. I worked on an HIVrelated clinical trial in South Africa, which had a significant impact on me and what I want to do in my career. It opened my eyes to global health issues and the importance of public policy in determining the health of individuals in developing countries. I come from a single-parent home, so it wouldn’t have been possible for me to have these kinds of opportunities without scholarships. CONNOR EMDIN, an undergraduate student in Biochemistry and Global Health, 26| Faculty of Arts & Science is the recipient of the Daniel Wilson Scholarship in Biochemistry and/or Physiology, the Walter and Mary Tuohy Award in Arts and Science and a University of Toronto Scholarship. He is also a 2013 Rhodes Scholar.

TRANSFORMING THE STUDENT LEARNING EXPERIENCE With more than 30,000 graduate and undergraduate students, the Faculty of Arts and Science is a university within a university. We seek to prepare global citizens—ethically grounded, critically engaged, original thinkers with an international outlook—who are ready to meet the challenges of the 21st century. To support this vision, U of T has pledged that no student offered admission to a program should be unable to enter or complete it due to lack of financial means. And to attract the top graduate students, the University is also committed to providing competitive graduate financial aid. A bursary or scholarship opens the door to countless opportunities for academic, personal and professional growth. Not only do financial awards give students precious time to focus on their studies, they also provide well-deserved recognition for a student’s hard work and achievements. To inspire and educate the next generation of global citizens, the Faculty of Arts and Science has launched a $250-million campaign, as an integral part of Boundless, the University of Toronto’s unprecedented $2-billion campaign. We invite you to join the Boundless Campaign as we enhance, strengthen and transform the student learning experience. Through the campaign, we will build on the core values that have made our student experience great: constant innovation in undergraduate education and a deep commitment to supporting undergraduate and graduate students through merit- and needs-based awards. With your generous support, we will nurture our exceptional students and prepare them for leadership roles across all sectors. Together, we will harness the boundless potential of our community to make major contributions toward a more prosperous world.

General Support You can direct your donation either towards general support for student awards in a program, department or the Faculty, or towards an established award. Every gift, at every level, can make a big difference in a student’s life.

Planned Giving A planned gift allows you to create a meaningful legacy at the university while receiving significant tax benefits. Planned gifts include bequests, retirement funds, charitable remainder trusts, residual interest, life insurance, as well as gifts-in-kind such as real estate.

Named Awards A named award may be created by a single donor or multiple donors if a certain funding level is pledged. Once established, an award can be built up through future contributions to increase its value and/or the number of awards made.

International Gifts Alumni and their families who reside in the U.S. may make donations directly to the University of Toronto and use the charitable receipt for their U.S. income tax returns under the Canada-United States Income Tax Convention. American citizens (or residents) who are not alumni or related to alumni, as well as corporations, foundations, estates and trusts requiring a U.S. tax receipt, can contribute through The Associates of the University of Toronto, Inc. For more information, contact associates.ut@utoronto.ca or 1.800.699.1736.

Corporate Matching Gift Program More than 500 companies will match contributions made by their employees, directors and retirees to the University of Toronto. To find out if your company is a matching gift partner, please call 416.978.3810 or visit uoft.me/corporatematching. Stocks & Securities: Tax-Smart Giving Donating publicly traded stock and securities is one of the most tax-smart ways to support the University of Toronto. You receive a tax receipt for the current value of the donated publicly traded stock or securities, plus you eliminate any tax owing on the capital gain.

The Dean’s Society The Dean’s Society honours individuals who donate $2,500 or more annually to the Faculty of Arts and Science. Members of the Dean’s Society will be recognized for their generosity and commitment to excellence, and will receive unique benefits throughout the year.
