Cecilie Fleming

Chair, Canadian Angus Foundation

Welcome to Building the Legacy 8! The vision of the Building the Legacy concept was to allow the Foundation to build monetarily. With the prosperity of the Foundation, it in turn would use the funds to provide opportunities for our youth, young breeders and membership to grow in the areas of leadership, marketing, networking, husbandry, genetic improvement and to learn about and research developing tools to enhance Angus production. The vision also included the importance of preserving our Angus history. By fostering these areas it was felt we would assure our Angus history is not lost and we would keep Angus as the breed of choice for the commercial beef sector and the end users for years to come. The vision is being realized and we have been able to support initiatives, scholarships, travel bursaries and learning opportunities. Through your benevolent giving of donated livestock, semen, embryos, items and experiences and the purchasing of the auction offerings, we at the Foundation have been able to put together a great suite of opportunities for our Angus membership. Thank you to the dedicated team who has worked throughout the year to bring you the 2019 sale. We extend a humble thank you to all of the past and present donors and to those who have purchased items over the past years or plan to support Building the Legacy 8. Thank you to the Alberta Angus Association for their dedication and planning of this Canadian Angus Convention in Drumheller and providing the Canadian Angus Foundation with an opportunity to once again host the sale. “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” - Benjamin Franklin

Shawn Birmingham

Canadian Angus Foundation

It is with great excitement that I welcome you to the 8th edition of the Canadian Angus Foundation Building the Legacy sale. Those who know me well understand my passion for the Canadian Angus Foundation and on occasion I have stated in a joking manner how I would rather be in a Foundation meeting than a Canadian Angus board meeting! By being involved with the Foundation you get a first-hand look at how the funds we raise help our membership. It is very exciting to watch our future Angus leaders. I truly believe in the Foundation’s mission to preserve and expand the Angus breed for future generations through education, youth development, scientific and market research, and historical preservation and restoration. Our association has a great group of young people that are eager to grow their herds and help shape the agriculture industry. Once again this year, our membership has offered up some great genetics, artwork, and experiences to raise funds in support of our Foundation. The funds raised in this sale will not only help youth through scholarships and bursaries, but they will also be used to help in the research of new tools to benefit all members in the years to come. I would love for everyone to take some time to talk with any Foundation board member to get a better understanding of what the Foundation’s purpose is and how important it is to ensure that appropriate funds are present to support continued growth of our youth and our breed.

Trevor Welch

President, Canadian Angus Association

I would like to welcome you to our Building the Legacy fundraiser auction. The sale has become a focal point for our annual National Convention. It brings out friendly competition with the goal of supporting our Juniors, research initiatives and preserving our Canadian Angus history. The sale is not only generously supported through donors, it is also supported by our members, commercial producers and industry colleagues through their purchases. We as Canadian Angus members should be extremely proud of our Legacy auction. The monies you have graciously helped us raise have made it possible to bring our Junior program to a level of involvement such that all Juniors across Canada have equal opportunity to participate, no matter where they live. Technology and research have become a large part of breeding cattle in recent years, and through your generosity, Canadian Angus has been able to ramp up our contribution to various research projects that will directly impact the future of our breed. The contributions made to the preservation of our Angus history have culminated in the second edition of our Canadian Angus history book, The Breeds, the Legends, the History: Canadian Angus History Book, 2019 Edition which will be unveiled at my President’s Reception in Drumheller on Thursday, June 6. I am honoured to include the launch of this massive volunteer undertaking in the reception, and encourage you to pick up a copy. Proceeds from sales of the book will support additional Foundation initiatives. Please make time to peruse the items on offer in this catalogue. I am sure you will find something that you need to add to your program at home, perhaps a night out on the town, or an item for your farm or home office. Thank you for your interest and support.

Your Pick of Dwajo Angus 2019 Heifer Calves

1

Dwajo Angus was started in 1983 with 10 black purebred heifers and in 1998 added the purebred reds through select sales. We have now grown to 200 breeding females. We started selling bulls privately and have contributed bulls to the On-Target Bull Sale for the last 19 years. Dwajo has also marketed cattle at the Northern Select Sale for over 30 years and also at Red Round-Up, the Masterpiece, and various other select bred heifer sales. We are offering a pick of our 2019 heifer calves, red or black, with the tattoo DJE. There will be roughly 80 calves to pick from. Sires of calves include Border Butte Foundation 15C, Dwajo Really Windy 60C, Red TC Night Train 26E and Red Topham Peterbilt 415B. The heifer is to be chosen by August 1 so that our consignments to the fall sales can also be selected.

Paternal sister to 2019 heifers

Our cow herd is easy fleshing, moderate in frame size, with capacity and good udders and feet are also strong traits we breed for. We strive to look for bulls to use in our herd that we can see the dams of and continue to pass on the important traits that we desire. Thank you for inviting us to participate in the Foundation sale. If you are looking for any information about our cattle operation please contact us and we’d be happy to help.

Your Pick of Shiloh Cattle Company’s 2019-Born Red Angus Heifer Calves

3

Your choice of any of the 2019 calendar year born Red Angus heifer calves with the herd tattoo letters SCCA. Selection to be made by July 31, 2019. We are truly honoured to offer “Pick of our 2019 Born Red Angus Heifer Calves” at this year’s Canadian Angus Foundation Building the Legacy sale. This is an exceptional year to make this offering available, as we have some of the most exciting and successful genetics in our 2019 calf crop that we have had to date. Along with our current battery of outstanding and proven herd sires, this spring we have several offspring available from Red DKF Racer 8E, Red Cockburn Assassin 624D, and Red Mar Mac Debut 70D. Red DKF Racer 8E swept the Angus show circuit in 2018 winning several grand champion titles, including Olds Fall Classic, Farmfair International and Canadian Western Agribition. He also made the top five bulls in the Supreme Show at Farmfair and the top 10 bulls in the RBC Supreme Show at Agribition.

Red Shiloh Farrah 94F

Red Shiloh Elite 85E

As well, Racer was the Silver Medal Champion Angus Bull of North America and currently holds the titles of the Canadian Angus Association’s Red Angus Junior Bull Champion & Red Angus Show Bull of the Year on the CAA Gold Show circuit. Red Cockburn Assassin 624D was the high selling bull at the 2017 Cockburn Bull Sale, bringing $77,500. We purchased the walking rights for 2018 on Assassin from Brylor Ranch at the 2017 Canadian Red Round-Up Sale, and are more than pleased with the results. Assassin’s outstanding genetics combined with several of our top females have provided us with many offspring that are already acquiring that front pasture appeal and performance that we strive for here at Shiloh Cattle Company.

Red Shiloh Devotion 10D

Red Mar Mac Debut 70D is certainly not to be outdone. Debut has proven himself to be a strong force in our bull battery. Debut 70D also achieved several Champion titles in 2018 and is currently the Canadian Angus Association’s 2018 National Champion Red Angus Senior Bull on the CAA Gold Show circuit. Other sires represented: Red Circle G Cargo 8C Red Shiloh Domain 92D Red Shiloh Enterprise 78E Red Redrich Bumper Crop 336B It means a great deal to us to be involved in Building the Legacy 8. Poss Maverick was one of the highest used Angus bulls in the US in spring 2019. Owned by Semex and Belvin Angus, he was the $60,000 high-selling bull at Poss Angus sale in 2018. Maverick combines a unique package of carcass merit and phenotype rarely seen in the breed. Phenotypically, Maverick is deep ribbed, stout based, sound footed and brings an extra dimension of performance and growth. His genetic merit balanced high growth with a 141YW EPD and high marbling of 1.51. His first calves have showcased early gestation and lower birth weights with the look and eye appeal expected. Only two animals in the CAA database combine 130 YW with 1.50 Marbling: Maverick and Eline 7E, one of the possible matings. A choice of two outstanding Bennett TheRock daughters are available to be mated with Maverick. Cudlobe Eline 7E and Cudlobe Queen 38E both bring unique matings with their balanced carcass merit, strong growth that combine well with Maverick’s breeding potential. Both will provide exciting options. Eline 7E brings exceptional balance in her numbers with low birth, high calving ease, high growth and exceptional marbling. She ranks in the top 10% of the breed for 11 of 12 listed traits. Queen 38E showcases a balance of strength with high ranking EPDs across her profile.

Sensation calves proved their worth this past spring, selling to purebred and commercial stockmen across the prairies. Sensation sires consistent, highly maternal, performance Angus cattle. Montana Octane 6121 is a powerful herd sire purchased as a featured bull at the 2017 Montana Ranch bull sale. Octane’s mother is one of the top donor females in the Montana Ranch program, and his sire JMB Traction 292 is the sire of Schiefelbein Attractive 4565, who sired the high sellers at Peak Dot and Schiefelbein Angus this spring. Octane is a heavily muscled, long bodied, powerhouse, and his first calf crop looks like he does. He offers tremendous performance and carcass merit, ranking in the top 1% of the breed for WW, YW, Milk, TM, REA and Carcass Weight.

$18,500 feature bull at Montana Ranch in 2017 sale to Belvin Angus. Deep bodied, expansive ribbed, wide based and full of performance, this docile and impressive individual ranks in the top 2% of the breed or better for seven traits. BtL 4 featured the first Hot Lotto semen released and it set our semen record: $900/ straw to Poplar Meadows; this remains our record for high selling semen. BSF Hot Lotto 1401 is perhaps the most complete son of Cash to date. His tremendous thickness, soundness, bone, foot size and fleshing ability make him exceptional. He was the most popular display bull in Denver at the NWSS in 2015. He is a maternal brother to the two-time Reserve Grand Champion Bull in Denver, BSF Opportunist Z5. Hot Lotto’s presence and unique pedigree dictate popularity among seedstock and commercial breeders alike. He sires progeny that are demanded in all circles of our industry and put money in the pocket of those who use him. Hot Lotto’s dam has proven herself and the entire cow family are terrific producers. The Hot Lotto bulls in Hamilton’s Denver pen were certainly features again this year, proving he is still a hot commodity! Just look at these results from Hamilton’s sale last March: • second high selling bull HF Cloud-9 67E to Poplar Meadows Angus for $32,500; • HF Hidden Figures 53E to Alta Genetics for 20,000; • HF Hot Ticket 38E to Northway Cattle for $19,000; • second high selling heifer HF Rosebud 64E to David H McDougall for $8,500.

IMP 5405C January 30, 2015

Cowboy Up sold in the 2016 Hinman sale for $350,000. When the dust settled, Hamilton Farms was able to acquire Canadian semen rights on this powerful prospect. He has an outcross pedigree and is a high performance, big-bodied, wide-based, heavyquartered individual, who is simply impressive in his makeup. Cowboy Up is an outlier, a breed changer with incredible growth and performance while maintaining traditional Angus character. His EPD profile is impressive: top 1% for WW, YW and CW. His cow family is the definition of maternal performance. A 10% semen interest sold in the 2017 Bases Loaded sale at Coors Field during the NWSS in Denver for $120,000 to a consortium of breeders. The first Cowboy Up heifer calf sold in Canada through the Power & Perfection sale last November for $26,000 to Greenwood Angus/3G Cattle Ventures. Her full sister sold in the same sale to Kevin and Joanne Fraser for $18,000. Other progeny have been topping sales in the US and the buzz is just starting with this young herd sire. The first semen offered in Canada was in Bohrson’s New Year’s Resolution sale where it averaged $625/straw. Cowboy Up’s first sales results at Hamilton Farms proved his worth: he sired eight of the 17 top selling bulls ($14,000+), including the first and second highest selling bulls for $34,000 and $32,500. These eight averaged $21,063. He sired two of the six top selling heifers ($7,000+), including the highest seller at $16,000 and another at $7,000. In 2019, Cowboy Up sired bulls were the top selling sire group and two heifer calves were top sellers at $25,000 and $18,000.

2019 Supreme Champion of the World; 2018 Canadian Angus Show Bull of the Year; 2018 Farmfair International Supreme Champion Bull; 2018 Canadian Western Agribition RBC Beef Supreme Champion Bull, DMM International 54D is one of the best bulls in Canada today, donated by Glen Gabel/Miller Wilson Angus. As with all great Angus sires, you start with a remarkable dam who was Show Female of the Year in 2017, DMM Blackbird 105A. Showing alongside this mama in 2016, they were the Reserve Show Female of the Year; one year later, mother and son each grab this notable Canadian title. And look at International 54D. He’s big. He’s mammothly muscled. He’s got a big, sound foot on him. He moves well. He’s a bull of today because he has the stoutness and rib capacity of 105A and the growth, dimension and mass of his International sire. International’s sire, Harvestor, set the selling standard in 2012 at $275,000. Harvestor’s dam (S A V Emblynette 5483) and full sister traded for $400,000 and $200,000 in 2013. Then International set the new record by selling for $400,000 in 2013. His dam is now over 10 years old and is as phenotypically correct as they come. By mating their great 105A cow, complete with deep-seeded breeding strategies inherent in the decades-long-running Gumbo Gulch and Southern Ox programs, with the hottest Schaff Angus Valley bull in the world, Lee and Dawn created an impressive genetic combination. Glen Gabel knows it, and is benefiting. And now, you can, too! 2019 Grand Champion in the Champion of the World Competition. MJT Impressive 813F, the 2018 Canadian Angus Gold Show Bull Calf of the year, brings together two exceptionally strong animals. MJT Impressive is sired by the 2016 Canadian Angus Show Bull of the Year, MAF First Impression 4420. Used in many flushes, his progeny have been showing exceptionally moderate birth weights and then growing very efficiently and turning heads around the globe. Here at home we couldn’t be happier with his daughters in production as they are the type to build a cow herd. MJT Impressive’s dam, DMM Blackcap Essence 7Y, was the 2013 Canadian Angus Show Female of the Year. 7Y has proven herself to be a big time producer with the unique ability to pass along extra hip dimension and muscle shape that is complimentary to many breeding lines without sacrificing udder quality and femininity. MJT Impressive 813F was Reserve Champion Bull at Farmfair International, as well as Senior Bull Calf Champion at Canadian Western Agribition. Shane Kaufmann, South View Ranch purchased a half interest in the calf after judging him at Farmfair and we are excited about the potential for this stud. He has a very useful birthweight at 84 lbs and should add some extra length of body and extension up front for a great look. An outstanding hair coat and overall cool design make him Impressive!

Bid on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have Angus breeder and NHL legend Brian Sutter and a couple of his famous NHL friends come to your field day or fundraising event! This could be an excellent opportunity for a breeder or group of breeders to purchase and donate this event to a local fundraiser or charity. Imagine the crowd gathered for this instead of another dance or bingo! Or, you could use this opportunity as entertainment at your farm’s field day/customer appreciation day. Brian Sutter is the second-oldest of the famous Sutter brothers of Viking, Alberta and the first to play in the NHL after being selected 20th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 1976 Entry Draft. He played his entire 12-season career for the Blues, the last nine years as captain. He also played in three All Star Games. In 1988 his Number 11 jersey was retired by the Blues and he moved quickly into coaching St. Louis, winning the Jack Adams Award as Best Coach in 1991. He has had subsequent coaching stints for the Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames and Chicago Blackhawks. In the last few years Brian is very proud of having coached five senior teams to the Allen Cup Championship Final. Brian and Judy and their family currently run their Atlasta Angus operation near Sylvan Lake, Alberta and are passionate about the Angus business and supporting youth in agriculture. Thomas Wildman, Alberta Junior Angus Association Director, will be co-hosting the event to help facilitate the entertainment. He has co-emceed the Stollery Children’s Hospital Snowflake Gala, announced various cattle shows, and cohosted a radio broadcast of an Alberta Junior Hockey League game. Thomas looks forward to this opportunity as he plans to enroll in the NAIT Television and Radio Arts Program with a dream to have a future in the sports broadcasting industry. Thomas is excited to ask Brian about his experiences of having 17 “Gordie Howe Hat tricks”, the second most in NHL history! Brian has committed to coming to a venue of your choice and putting on a “Hot Stove Lounge” evening of NHL stories and entertainment. What friends Brian brings along will be contingent on the time of year chosen for the event, but be assured the roster will definitely be full of all-star entertainment and autograph opportunities!
