Compass #60 January 2015

Page 1

Tomorrow’s Dream>Changes>FX Every large and ongoing creative endeavor needs a physical space in which to incubate, and The Compass is no exception. However, it is unique in that it simply wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for its birthplace, home, and office for the last five years: The Whitehaus. If you aren’t familiar with this hub of creativity, it’s an eight-bedroom house in Jamaica Plain that has hosted hundreds of events and housed countless creative minds over the last several years. I attribute most of my artistic development and adult maturation to this place, and the incredible roommates I have had there. Immediately upon moving to Boston and meeting this radical crew of (mostly) Cape Cod kids, I was encouraged and filled with inspiration. The seeds of The Compass were already being planted and watered regularly in my brain years before the newspaper itself--a 1-page zine at first--came to fruition. When I discovered the nascent collective of artists living in the neighborhood I had just moved to, I wasted no time getting to know each and every one of them. This enthralling courtship went on until I knew everyone in the haus, and they welcomed me into their burgeoning community. The scope of my mission continued to widen and evolve a great deal over the years, as new creative

friends took up residence there. I can’t logistically list all the astounding people in this limited space (see Nods) but I want to thank them all for inspiring me to start this project, and to continue it all this time. I am so grateful. 2015 will see myself and The Compass moving out of The Whitehaus. While it’s sad in some ways, it’s also a great opportunity for The Compass to continue to develop in a more accessible space. The myriad responsibilities of the newspaper have already been shared amongst all of us volunteers for the past few years. Now even the major responsibilities, like finding and maintaining a physical space in which to do our thing, are shared as well. Starting in January, we will be meeting every Monday at 7pm at The Democracy Center in Harvard Square. The Center is an historic community meeting space and has functioned as a hub of radical activity for years now. We are thrilled to continue our mission in this new environment, a true public space that’s equally as inspiring as our project’s beloved birthplace. So stay in touch, be inspired, and know that you have more support than ever to express yourself in Boston, however you do it. For the extended version of this thing check the website man. Spooky Town Tapes Increases Their OUTput Spooky Town is a swell, swelling bubble of strange, peppy pop porridge hovering above our northwesterly neighbor Brattleboro, VT. It’s hot and it’s cool. It’s been hangin up there for 5 years now, drippin just enough freaky sound on us New Englanders to keep us satisfied. But according to the contents (and mere existence) of their brand new E-newsletter, The Spooky Town Tribune, they got more to pour on us than ever before. Yes! Scope their new dot com and releases of Brattleboro’s beloved unsettling soft rockus Tall Boys (co-release with Gnar Tapes) and Grape Room (comforting wails built by Great Valley). I’ve come to learn that each turn they’re churnin is worth gettin servin, or at least observin. SPOOKYTOWNTAPES.COM - Sam Potrykus

ALLISON CEKALA based her MFA thesis exhibition on where exactly the city gets is copious amounts of the rock. Using photography and video, Cekala takes the viewer on a transcontinental journey to the Atacama Desert in Chile to find the birthplace of our road salt. find & form space

FIND & FORM SPACE proves that some nineto-fivers are cool. While the company Find & Form builds mobile and web apps for the digital world, the place where they work is actually located in the South End’s SOWA district, mere steps from a swarm of galleries and artists’ studios. Recognizing the opportunity to utilize this amazing thing they have - a physical space - they became instant contributors to the Boston art scene by turning their workplace into a pop-up contemporary art gallery every first friday of the month joining SOWA’s FIRST FRIDAYS. They also host talks, panel discussions and performances to keep the creative community activated. Exhibition Director and local artist KEVIN FRANCES is responsible for the primarily local and always interesting programming happening @524 Harrison Ave. The last show was a rough cut screening of artist Marisa Williamson’s short film, HEMINGS IN PARIS, where the artist plays Sally Hemings during a 2 year period spent in Paris with Thomas Jefferson, concurrent with the city’s contemporary black diaspora. The screening was followed by an artist Q&A regarding her personal project. The idea to utilize spaces during off-hours is exactly the kind of resourceful, low-budget initiatives that not only Enable - both artists and viewers - but could easily happen in spaces all over town. Boston needs to see more of this, so make sure to support the people already doing it! Space.FindandForm.com - CEEK

UNTERCO LTURAL CU

STORY HI

In 1900, the textile mills of Lawrence, MA produced a quarter of all woolen cloth in the United States. The industrialists who financed Lawrence’s development profited greatly from this productivity, partly due to wise capital investment but also through the exploitation of immigrant labor. Most were young female immigrants and their children – desperate people with no economic alternatives – who faced miserable conditions at work and home. Exposure to harsh chemicals and stagnant air in the mills literally poisoned the workforce; crowded and unsanitary tenements spread diseases; and wages were so meager that proper nutrition was unattainable. In addition to profits, this system produced a culture where most women died by age 25 and many of their children died on the job.

Despite substantial returns, on January 1 1912 wages were cut after a law was implemented reducing working hours for women and children from 56 to 54 per week. To the owners’ surprise, after the first wages were issued on January 11 1912, the women and children walked out of their jobs together. They demanded not only bread, but roses too – a living wage, and to be treated with dignity and respect as human beings. Thus began the Bread & Roses strike. By the next day 25,000 workers had taken to the streets. To declare the truth of their plight and their pressing needs, strikers held signs, hung broadsides, distributed pamphlets, and sang the protest anthem “Bread & Roses.” Word spread to the International Workers of the World (IWW) who descended upon Lawrence and assumed a leadership role in negotiations and organizing. Donations of food and money from sympathizers across the Northeast poured in to sustain the strikers. Authorities employed severe measures in an attempt to subdue the strike. Police, militia and even university students from many cities and towns joined local forces. Demonstrators were beaten, arrested and several were killed. The Federal government sat idly by as unrest persisted until a February 24 Lawrence train station incident made national headlines. Reports of police brutalizing a group of mothers as they attempted to spare their offspring from starvation by sending them to volunteer host families in Philadelphia struck a chord with the greater public – it could no longer be denied who was in the wrong. A Congressional investigation of the textile industry commenced and shortly thereafter the strikers’ demands were met. The settlement was matched across industries as owners feared further strikes and government intervention. Over the next six decades Lawrence was subjected to a propaganda campaign to erase from public memory the brave refusal of the Bread & Roses strikers. An annual “God & Country” parade framed the events of 1912 as an unfortunate disruption initiated by the anti-American IWW outside agitators, which was overcome by a legion of patriotic Lawrence citizens. Not until the 1970s, when the New York painter Ralph Fasanella came to Lawrence with an historian and journalist to resurrect the people’s history through an exhibition at the public library, did the Bread & Roses narrative that’s now celebrated annually in Lawrence return to the fore of public consciousness – a true testament to the power of art. Chances are epicures, connoisseurs, and the general lay-guzzler have been more than hipped to this season’s nor’easter of hearth-side seltzer flavors purveyed by Worcester’s own Polar Beverages at this late date. Big ups in their direction for deviating from a palate of strictly sweets (Boston Cream Pie, Butter Rum, Fudge Cheesecake), though I’m sure we’ll look fondly upon those bubbly days of yore once shrouded in the mists of time. This season’s crop hosts more fruits than ever before (almost exclusively, depending on your understanding of the coconut. Turns out it’s a drupe, also known as a stone fruit). Here’s to the rearview, the review, .our health, and weird shit

PERSPECTIVES by RYAN DOUGLASS and KEIRA HOROWITZ You need advice? Prob. Ask Keira & Ryan: tardyeagle@tardyeagle.com I don’t really like paintings. Do I really have to pretend? KEIRA: No. I think you might not be giving paintings a chance. Or maybe you just haven’t found the right painting. Did you see that scene from the first Batman where the Joker goes to the art museum? I don’t know why I’m telling you that, but it feels relevant here. My only real advice is to be careful who you say “I don’t really like paintings” to. Boston can be a pretty .pretentious city sometimes RYAN: Yes, of course. Listen, no one understands paintings. No one gets sculpture. There’s not a person alive who could tell you what quilts are doing. But we have to pretend to understand them, because if we don’t, then The Right has won and we’re all fighting for guns, wondering why poor don’t just work harder, dating blonde cyborgs who just regurgitate those same epithets until all we are is dead in the ground with capital to pass on to loved ones who never knew us well enough to love us back. Now go back and try to .find something in those Wyeths I don’t really like my friend’s baby. Do I really have to pretend? KEIRA: Yes. Treat this situation as if your friend has a lame boyfriend/girlfriend. If you want to stay close to this friend, you are going to have to be cool around the kid. If you can manage it, quietly find another friend that also doesn’t like this baby. Then you can both be like, “Ugh that ”.baby is such an asshole

CRANBERRY CLEMENTINE I’m still vying hard for the inculcation of Ginger Lemonade as a permanent powerhouse on an updated year-round roster. Its running mate? CranClem. The clementine isn’t just a canny attempt at taking steps toward ‘cross the board alliterations (though it’s totally appreciated). The sweet tang of this tiny fruit pairs just fine with the tried and true cranberry base. A Mass. distiller makes a rum-based cranberry liqueur. Drink this with that, plus one twist from every .citrus fruit in the house

by KATIE MCCARTHY

RYAN: Nope. Honestly, we really need to be a lot more open about our hatred of babies. Liking a baby is the equivalent of saying “Congratulations!” to a recently married couple. You don’t get a pat on the back for giving up and looking for common core life achievements. Babies and marriage are the reasons none of us get paintings. 

.Try to sense people based on their cologne - Nick Ortolani

A surprising rerun from last year’s offerings. A full-strength Brie could overpower all this mildness. Try instead: a slate of butter or salted .milk

GINGER APPLE My mother was not a fan. All identifiable flavors are overrepresented like a plus-sized apértif ham-fistedly mixed under the table at Ruby Tuesday. Best bet for a straightforward afternoon .nap cocktail by the fire. Pair with: ginger brandy

TOASTED COCONUT CRÈME Another repeat and the last holdout from the sweet-toothed flavor masons at Polar. Resist the urge to double-down on candied burps and opt for a more sophisticated sweet/savory coconut split. .Pair with: tom kha gai soup

HEY BACKWATERERS,

In case you forgot, TD Sidell moved to NEW YORK CITY, and therefore has seen many celebrities. He figured that you guys were sick of trading stories about seeing Jerry Remy smoking in the walk-in of one of his terrible sports bars or that dude who just dances for The Bosstones coming out of hip replacement surgery or whatever and that he would ENRICH YOUR LIVES with some tales of all the amazing celebs he got to see with his own eyes RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS FACE. This list should appear .monthly or until all celebrities leave New York

MICKY DOLENZ and PETER CRISS ,The lobby bar of a Hilton Garden Inn Phoenixville, PA

The holiday season brings on a lot of travel for your intrepid starwatcher—but that doesn’t stop these eyes from seeing famouses out and about in the world. On the night of Thanksgiving, after a wonderful meal at my girlfriend’s dad’s house, we retired to our hotel to find two aging rockers in the bar. Apparently my favorite Monkee (sorry Peter Tork and Ghost Davy Jones and person who doesn’t care Mike Nesmith) and the former drummer for KISS (who stink) were in town to do a book signing at the Target across the street for out hotel and OH BOY IS THAT A BUMMER. It was a nice reminder though that no matter how high you fly—either as a drummer for a band that is made up for a TV show but then becomes so much more, or as a drummer for a band that stinks, or a simple celebrity spotter whose writings are quickly rocketing him to the top of the entertainment industry—it can all come crashing down. All in all, Micky seemed to be in okay spirits when we rode in the elevator together; I couldn’t hear him audibly sobbing, which I what I would have been doing in his situation as I thought about my past glories in a silent mid-market hotel elevator on a holiday that is about family as I waited to go to my lonely room. GOOD FOR YOU, MICKY.

BOSTON FESTIVAL OF FILMS FROM IRAN 1/16 - 1/25 @MFA WWW.MFA.ORG

FISH & CAT (2013) dir. SHAHRAM MOKRI (1/17 & 1/21) @MFA

Iran has boasted one of the world’s most robust national cinemas for a few decades now. Despite ongoing problems with censorship and other forms of state intervention -- some filmmakers (eg. Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof) have been banned from making films, sentenced to jail or house arrest, or else forced into exile and cut off from the source of their stories and sensibility -- its film industry has achieved numerous crossover successes, arguably culminating with Asghar Farhadi’s 2012 Best Foreign Film Oscar for A SEPARATION. This month’s festival highlights seven new (or very recent) examples of Iranian cinema, featuring at least one of its biggest names (Rasoulof, with MANUSCRIPTS DON’T BURN) alongside a few of its most promising newcomers, such as Shahram Mokri, on hand to discuss FISH & CAT, an atypically zany-looking vehicle in which participants in a kite-flying competition stumble into conflict with a pair of cannibalistic cooks. - Matthew Martens

Either way, the Brattle’s got you covered with their six-week salute to some of the most twisted love stories committed to celluloid. BOSTON VIEWFINDER

http://www.bostonviewfinder.com as a justification for some high-flying aceXistenZ (1999) tion sequences and a nu-metal soundtrack, dir. DAVID CRONENBERG David Cronenberg’s EXISTENZ (released 1/30 & 1/31, 11:59PM @COOLIDGE the same year) used a similar premise to explore the complex psychosexual nature of our relationship with technology. Here, when a person plugs in, it’s more ‘squishy orifice’ than ‘USB port’. The film fits right in with a lot of Cronenberg’s earlier works that are often described as “body horror,” with lots of ambiguous, fleshy imagery to make you uncomfortable. It can also be seen as Back in 1999 when THE MATRIX was re- a loose thematic sequel to VIDEODROME, leased, adolescents everywhere had their using video games rather than television to minds blown by its almost prescient vision scrutinize the fogging of reality within our of a world in which humanity has become culture. PSYCHOTRONIC MOVIES IN OUR ZONE

THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES (1971) dir. ROBERT FUEST 1/31, 11:30PM @BRATTLE Is there a better actor, so closely associated with horror films, than Vincent Price? I think not. This true renaissance man’s acting powers extended far beyond the genre (his heel turn in LAURA being the prime example), but after the early 1950s he rarely exercised them elsewhere on screen. His decision is lauded by a psychotronic legion. Price’s work in the horror genre runs so deeply that his filmography can be broken into three distinct periods spread across five decades: his 50s & pre-50s films (THE FLY,

THE TINGLER, etc.), 60s films (HOUSE OF USHER, THE RAVEN, WITCHFINDER GENERAL, etc.), and 70s & post-70s output. The latter would last until Price’s death in 1993 at 82. This period bears witness to a declining robustness of roles for our hero, though his greatness is such that even in more minor roles he could never fail to leave his mark: his narration of THRILLER, his kindly mad scientist in EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, and even his bit part in DEAD HEAT. The early 1970s offered Price his last batch of choice roles, the best being his turn as Dr. Phibes in two films. The original Phibes film, THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES (1971), easily bests its sequel and features what is Vincent Price’s last great starring role. Phibes, an erudite Phantom of Opera-esque madman who, with the help of his silent female assistant Vulnavia, is bent on avenging the death of his wife. How? By killing the team of doctors that were charged with her care of course! The great Joseph Cotten appears as one of the doctors hunted by the really weird, theatrical Phibes in this very colorful cult classic that literally screams: Vincent Price! - Dan Shea

@BRATTLE Master surrealist Alejandro Jordorowsky relates how his planned science fiction masterpiece failed to materialize, giving anecdotes about the Hollywood system, casting Orson Welles and Salvador Dali, and the passion a true artist needs to create something truly spectacular.

WHY DON’T YOU PLAY IN HELL? (2013) dir. SION SONO @BRATTLE A Yakuza boss gets an amateur film crew called the Fuckbombers to film a clash with a rival gang. Also features a dim-witted lover pulled in to direct, a pop-star femme fatale, and a tune that’ll be stuck in your head for weeks. Screens through 1/4.

TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA (2013) dir. SATOSHI KON @BRATTLE Something to be grateful for: Studio Ghibli’s other old master hasn’t quit yet. His latest hand-drawn fantasia, sumptuously scored by Joe Hisaishi, concerns a young girl found growing in a bamboo shoot who yearns to return to her home on the Moon. Screens through 1/5.

VANYA ON 42ND STREET (1994) dir. LOUIS MALLE @COOLIDGE Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory teamed up a decade after MY DINNER WITH ANDRE for this eccentric adaptation of Chekhov’s trenchant and moving Uncle Vanya, filmed as a staged rehearsal after three years of workshopping by its exceptional ensemble cast.

SNOWPIERCER (2013) dir. BOON JOON-HO @BRATTLE A tale of class stratification and the revolution it leads to, all trapped in a claustrophobic train hurtling through the snow filled ruins of civilization. Clunky as it sounds, the end product is a sleek and compelling thriller.

METROPOLIS (1927) dir. FRITZ LANG @BSA Bask in this monumental film: its mammoth Tower of Babel, its sweeping landscape of the future, and the timeless conflict between the bourgeois and proletariat. This science fiction epic was one for the history books and still it stands proud.

10 ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE

(2013) dir. JIM JARMUSCH @COOLIDGE Forget TWILIGHT – leave it to Jarmusch to make vampire-romance cool again! Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston play a pair of Nosferatus who love great poetry, old records, quality blood, and each other. One of the best hang-out movies in years!

dir. JENNIFER KENT @BRATTLE A widow and her child encounter a creepy book and its monster. Relying on the philosophy of “less is more” rather than cheap jumps, the tone here reminisces on classic horror and the film is all the better for it.

MANUSCRIPTS DON’T BURN (2013) dir. MOHAMMAD RASOULOF @MFA A masterpiece of brooding suspense that oscillates between howl of rage and despairing wail. As in Jon Stewart’s ROSEWATER, it tells the story – based on true events – of a writer hunted down and persecuted by Iran’s authoritarian regime. Also screens 1/21.

23 BLADE RUNNER (1982)

UNDER THE SKIN (2013) dir.JONATHAN GLAZER @BRATTLE What does it mean to be human? It’s a question worth pondering while watching Scarlett Johansson’s incognito alien carry out a mysterious mission to seduce and destroy men. A haunting soundtrack and stunning cinematography complete this otherworldly look at humanity.

14 THE BABADOOK (2014)

PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1959)dir. ED WOOD @COOLIDGE Before THE ROOM, before TROLL 2, this was the original Best Worst Movie. Flubbed lines, cardboard spaceships, unconvincing doubles, Tor Johnson, and more create a perfect storm of cheesiness. “Future events such as these will affect YOU in the future!” Coolidge @fter Midnite! Also screens 1/17. THE CONGRESS (2013) dir. ARI FOLMAN @BRATTLE Robin Wright plays herself as an actress who sells her identity to the studio who will digitally use it in movies. How could this go wrong? Picture a dystopian future where people exist in a surreal, collective, and animated hallucination.

@BRATTLE dir. RIDLEY SCOTT Initially disfigured by studio execs and misunderstood by most, subsequently revered by a cult fan base, and now seen as one of a kind. Scott has since gone back and restored his futuristic film noir to match his original vision. Final Cut! Also screens 1/24.

24 FREAKS (1932)

dir. TODD BROWNING @BRATTLE One of the most infamous, controversial, insanely perverse horror films of all time! Join a cast of actual sideshow freaks for this tale of betrayal, mutilation, and pinheads. A central influence on everything from The Ramones to AMERICAN HORROR STORY.

@BRATTLE

THE BRATTLE THEATRE @40 Brattle Street Cambridge, MA It is 2014. Video stores are nearly dead, and independent movie theaters are not very far behind as you scan the endangered business model list. A place like the Brattle is a survivor, a fighter. A place like the Brattle fights a daily battle, year in year out, in order to continue on providing the experience of going to the movies for people who love adventurous cinema, classic cinema, and just plain interesting movies. Clearly, enough people agree with the Brattle’s mission to keep this cinema afloat, and thank goodness for that. Pause for just a moment though, and appreciate the efforts behind keeping an artistic portal like the Brattle Theatre up and running. I’ve had so many good times at the Brattle, I’ve learned so much and seen so many things there, it’s hard to imagine a world without it. Go to the Brattle. Buy a membership. Bring your friends there. Support the place so that it remains with us forever. I was recently at the Brattle with (almost) my entire family. This living Harvard Sq. film museum is one of the very few artistic institutions in the Boston area that all members of my family are capable of enjoying. That right there is worthy of celebration. They are to be commended for the perfect balance they are constantly able to strike between art films, Hollywood popcorn fare, and out and out weirdness. I. Love. This. Place. - Dan Shea
