Višegrad

išegrad is located in the utmost east of the Republic of Srpska, or Bosnia and Herzegovina, 16 km from the border with Serbia. The municipality of Višegrad has the surface of 448 square km, and average altitude is 324 m. It is estimated that the municipality of Višegrad has about 13,500 inhabitants and just the town about 8,000. Višegrad was mentioned for the first time in 1433 when it belonged to the powerful Serbian noble Pavlović family, under whose authority was the medieval town Dobrun also. According to the Turkish sources, Osman pasha conquered this town in 1544 and it stayed under the Turkish authority until the Berlin Congress in 1878 when the entire Bosnia and Herzegovina was taken over by the Austria-Hungary. Two hunting grounds are registered in the area of the municipality of Višegrad: the Hunting groun “Ponos” (38,488 ha) and “Kamenica” (3,842 ha). The Drina River is the natural beauty that shoul be singled out, as well as the northern part of the municipality of Višegrad that borders with the National park Tara, which is the natural habitat for the endemic species the Serbian spruce. The Drina River is assumed to be one of the most beautiful rivers in former Yugoslavia. It was famous for its impetuousness in the past and the rafters who tamed its rapids. The bridge over the Drina The bridge in Višegrad over the Drina is an endowment of the Grand Vizier Mehmed-pasha Sokolović. He was one of the great Ottoman army leaders of Bosnian origin and at the peak of his power he ordered that the bridge should be made over the Drina, the bridge without a peer. The bridge was built in the period between 1571 and 1577 and it was built by those days’s most renowned architect Kodža Mimar Sinan. It was built in the oriental style and represents the master piece of the then architecture. The bridge is one of

the most important national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in July 2007, it was registered at UNESCO’s list of the world cultural heritage. The monastery Dobrun The monastery Dobrun, in sources known as Kruševo, is located in a picturesque area on the road to Višegrad-Užice, 12 km away from Višegrad in the cliff of the Rzav River. The old town Dobrun It is located next to the monastery Dobrun, 150 metres high in the rocks. This used to be the most famous medieval town in this region, known even in the 15th century. Višegrad’s thermal resort Višegrad’s thermal resort is located 5 km in the north from Višegrad. It is placed in the thick pine woods at the altitude of 414 m. Hamam in the Višegrad’s thermal resort Hamam (Turkish bath) was made during the construction of the famous bridge over the Drina in 1575. For the construction of the bridge the stone was used that was brought from the mines in the area of today’s Višegrad thermal resort. During the stone digging the workers discovered the spring of mineral water and soon found out that the wounds they got while working healed much faster than ordinary. They attributed that beneficial remedy to the mineral water they bathed and it was decided then for the hamam to be made. The hamam is still in use and is being hired for an hour. St. Jovan’s church In the past it was built from wood to the full. It has the shape of one nave basilica and without fresco writing.
