BORN TO JUMP INTO ACTION NOW AND MAKE PLANS TODAY FOR PHIL PETERSON’S 42ND KEY WEST POKER RUN STARTING THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18TH America is a great and beautiful country and is much deserving of a month long celebration in July rather than just one day. Uncle Mike’s Smokehouse Grill is making sure that the American biker gets the celebration they deserve on Saturday, July 26 in Plant City. Come out for a great time under shady trees for the Born To Ride Great American Biker Bash. You never truly understand what a great country we have until you experience it from a foreigner’s perspective. Our mega feature this month is Gary France in America. Gary is a motor journalist from London, England who traveled the great roads of our country. He gives us his take on a 21,000 mile journey and discovery of America. We are proud to publish this story. There are a couple more celebrations worth noting. Our daughter Emily is turning 13 in July! (Yes, we know, it was just yesterday!) Emily and Bruiser were Born To Ride (literally), and in June they got to experience riding the mountains and hairpins of Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina—along with a great cabin stay and biker party at the Copperhead Lodge. As parents, we knew it was time for this big journey and they were ready. It was a great family experience … nothing like riding the mountains and pulling over on a hot day and tubing down the river together! Thank you Harley of Tampa for the touring baggers and Copperhead Lodge for the great mountain stay. Happy Birthday Baby Girl! Wow! Born To Ride is celebrating 19 years in business … I’ll say it again … wow! And we’ve got the trilogy of parties going on over the summer. Be sure to join us as we celebrate in our home town of Brandon at Green Iguana, at the legendary biker bar Peggy’s Corral, and at the historic Biff Burger. It’s been an honor telling your stories and covering all you do every single day for the people, pets, children, and military of this great country. And by the way, we are forging ahead another 19 years … BORN TO RIDE FOR LIFE! Happy Birthday Em! We love you more than bunnies! Mom & Dad

In keeping with the company’s customer-led product development approach, starting next week select consumers across the country will be able to ride and provide feedback on the bike, helping to shape the future of HarleyDavidson’s first-ever electric motorcycle. While not for sale, Project LiveWire is specifically designed for the purpose of getting insight into rider expectations of an electric Harley-Davidson motorcycle. “America at its best has always been about reinvention,” said Matt Levatich, President and Chief Operating Officer, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “And, like America, HarleyDavidson has reinvented itself many times in our history, with customers leading us every step of the way. Project LiveWire is another exciting, customer-led moment in our history.” Spurred by this heritage, the Project LiveWire Experience invites customers to test ride, provide feedback and learn more about the story of the motorcycle. Even those who don’t yet ride will have the opportunity to feel the power of Project LiveWire through Jumpstart – a simulated riding experience. A 2014 U.S. tour – kicking off with a journey down Route 66 – will visit more than 30 Harley-Davidson dealerships now through the end of the year. In 2015, the Project LiveWire Experience will continue in the U.S. and

expand into Canada and Europe. Helping Preserve and Renew the Freedom to Ride for Generations As riding in the great outdoors is one of the best elements of motorcycling, sustainability remains a core strategic focus at HarleyDavidson. “Preserving the riding environment is important to all of us,” said Levatich. “Project LiveWire is just one element in our efforts to preserve and renew the freedom to ride for generations to come. As a company that has seen success for 111 years, we think in generational terms about our great riding environments for the next 111 years.” Fans can learn more about Project LiveWire, as well as specific dates and locations for Project LiveWire Experience stops at projectlivewire. com. Harley-Davidson also invites anyone who is interested in the possibilities of the future to follow and engage with the company on its social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. A 21,000 MILE USA DISCOVERY ON MY HARLEY-DAVIDSON

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing

Gary France is English and lives near London. In a few short years, Gary’s self-description changed from “Project Management Executive” to “Writer, traveler and motorcyclist, who is happiest when combining all three.” That’s quite a shift, but nevertheless an authentic summary. Riding with just his thoughts for company, Gary’s description of his 4-month trip unfolds through a down-to-earth record of what he saw, whom he met and what he felt on the road, backed up with an impressive photographic inventory. As he clicks up the miles from the New England states, through the Midwest and the Rockies, and closing in the desert states of the Pacific coast, his thoughts, language and photographs become increasingly reflective and vivid as the ‘journey’ progresses— revealing more and more of his internal exploration and steady winding down. with many. Not just those who wish they could make such a once-in-a-lifetime road trip, but also with the many men who have faced the unspoken uncertainties and reassessments of midlife. This is not only a detailed guide about where to go and what to see in the USA. It is also a personal story of one person seizing the moment—a living testimony to the maxim that travel is not so much about the destination as it is about the journey itself. One man living his dream, and carefully cornering through the opportunities that midlife presents. Having ridden 21,475 miles in the USA on one spectacular road trip, I was struck by a few things. I had no idea that America is so beautiful, with so many great places to see. I rode over high mountains and across deserts. I went to big vibrant cities and tiny towns. At one point, I saw almost no cars in 78 miles of riding, and at another I saw 78 cars on the road in one second. I saw extraordinary wealth and extreme poverty. I saw old things that should BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 17

Reaching Out to Serve More Children

These girls enjoyed the many activities brought to their neighborhood by the ‘Harmony in the Streets” Mobile camp teams.

In 1981, Youth Ranches Staff and Law Enforcement Officers began to explore new ways to serve more of Florida’s needy and neglected children. On the back acres of the Boys Ranch, they set up primitive camping facilities and invited youngsters to a unique summer camp. The purpose of the camp was to provide an opportunity for kids to have a positive interaction with the officers to promote the camp theme “Law Officers are Your Friends.” The program was so well received that the group took the adventure on the road the following year. They rented or borrowed different camping facilities across the state to create a local connection with the Law Enforcement Officers. As they traveled the state, they found a Girl Scout Camp in Volusia County that would be the perfect setting for a permanent facility. The Florida Sheriffs Youth Camp was acquired in late 1982 and began serving children in 1983. The programs offered at the nearly 200-acre Youth Camp were so popular; Youth Ranches officials began to look for an additional site. In 1986, Mr. and Mrs. Will Caruth provided 182 acres of land near Inglis/Yankeetown. The Georgia-Pacific Company donated an adjacent parcel of 60 acres of land for the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches Caruth Camp. Today, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches Camping Services Program provides three dynamic services for thousands of Florida’s children each year. Each service teaches boys and girls traditional values through positive, healthy recreational activities and embraces the camp theme “Law Enforcement Officers are Your Friends.” SUMMER CAMP – Boys and girls spend a week with volunteer Law Enforcement Officers enjoying a variety of educational outdoor activities. Canoeing, archery, swimming, horseback riding and many other self-esteem-building activities allow kids the opportunity to participate in groups as they learn about teamwork and build positive peer communication skills. The primary focus of Summer Camp is to prevent juvenile delinquency and develop healthy, positive relationships with Law Enforcement Officers. PROJECT HARMONY® – During each school year, both camps BTR 42 | BORNTORIDE.COM

offer Project Harmony – a weeklong leadership retreat for middle school aged students aimed at reducing violence, racial tensions, and negative behaviors. Project Harmony increases cultural understanding and builds positive leaders among today’s youth. Project Harmony develops the leadership potential within each student, teaching them the necessary skills to resolve conflicts and become productive members of their schools and communities. HARMONY IN THE STREETS – This mobile day camp program is a community-based service for underprivileged youth that combines the valuable lessons of Project Harmony with the exciting activities of Summer Camp. Camping teams spread out across the state and spend a week on site in the local community providing positive, interactive opportunities for children of families who typically have limited resources for productive summer fun. The program is designed to teach youngsters about respect, responsibility, and right behavior. Our goal is to prevent juvenile delinquency by keeping kids involved and busy in positive activities throughout the day. All of the camping programs and services provided by the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches are accredited by the American Camping Association. Each program has also received national recognition for making a dynamic impact of thousands of Florida’s boys and girls. Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches Florida’s Charity for Florida’s Children.®

TAMPA CHAPTER OF CREDIT UNIONS HOLDS 10TH ANNUAL CRUISE FOR KIDS MOTORCYCLE POKER RUN RAISES MONEY FOR LOCAL CHILDREN’S CHARITIES

On Sunday, April 13, a group of 320 big hearted bikers hit the roads throughout the Tampa Bay area to raise money for local children’s charities. The bikers succeeded in this venture, raising $45,000 as they participated in the 10th Annual Credit Union Cruise for Kids Motorcycle Poker Run, sponsored by the Tampa Chapter of Credit Unions. The bikers revved up their motorcycles at 10:00 AM that morning, making five “poker stops.” The first stop at Brandon HarleyDavidson, where bikers supported by purchasing breakfast and coffee; Parkesdale Farm Market, where bikers supported by purchasing the infamous strawberry milkshake; Doc’s Pub & Grille, and Neon Cowboy before ending the ride

at Quail Hollow in Wesley Chapel, FL. There, people turned out for a post-cruise celebration featuring live music by the Bobby Friss Band, 50/50, bike show sponsored by Born To Ride, classic car show sponsored by Tampa Bay Young Professionals, basket raffles, vendors, food and other giveaways. Ralph Landestoy of Land O’ Lakes won, a $5,000 VISA gift card, sponsored by CU Auto Branch. Ralph picked up his ticket from Florida West Coast Credit Union in Tampa sold by Rebecca Gonzalo. Over 10 years, the annual Credit Union Cruise for Kids has raised a total of $530,000 for donation to organizations which nurture children. This year’s recipients are: Clothes to

Kids, Boys and Girls Club of Suncoast, Tampa Bay and Hernando Counties, For Every Child Hope Totes, Oasis, Ronald McDonald House, Slyvia Thomas Center for Adoptive and Foster Familes, as well as All Children’s Hospital. I want to thank our sponsors, community partners, rider participants, all credit union employees and everyone’s hard work, dedication and giving hearts that will light up the faces of hundreds of kids throughout our community. Heartfelt thanks and congratulations to everyone involved in making this event come together and see us raise over a half a million dollars in the past 10 years. We couldn’t have down it without YOU! Women’s World y “Riding daily lets me clear m mind and ease life’s stresses for a while.”

I am a 44-year-old chick with a bike who has been married 28 years with three boys ages 27, 25, and 23. I have worked for the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC the better part of the last 23 years as an information technology specialist. I enjoy family, drag racing, motorcycle riding, sports, fishing and fitness. Let’s face it- I’m an adrenaline junkie! I spent the better part of my teens and early 20s riding on the back of my husband’s Kawasaki GPZ 550. We gave up his motorcycle once our children started developing their own interests and focused on raising our family. In the spring of 2013, my middle son, Josh, asked if I was interested in taking the motorcycle safety course with him. Once I experienced riding a bike, I knew I had to have one. I bought a motorcycle (Kawasaki Ninja 250R) before I completed the class and rode it home from the dealership the same day as receiving my license. That was the longest, scariest 15 miles of my life! My son and I have been riding together ever since. We have mother/son riding dates and choose different destinations often. On one of my first riding adventures with my husband and his friend while riding through the back roads of Saint Mary’s County, Maryland, I had my first accident; or what I like to refer to as an “incident.” While coming to a stop sign, I somehow sideswiped my husband on his bike. We both went down. Neither of us was seriously injured. I had a pretty bad gash on my left leg from his foot peg and knew I needed a few stitches. We picked the bikes up, made sure they were ridable, and he and his friend followed me to the hospital where I was stitched up and released. Looking back on my incident I could apply some of the tactics I learned in the motorcycle safety class. The point is dropping your bike will probably happen; pick it back up and ride again! You won’t regret it! Riding reminds me that I can do anything. It makes me feel strong, independent, confident and free. If I’ve had a bad day or a bad week, once I start riding, that all goes away. Your mind is free from everything. Free from everything but the roads, the trees, and the different smells. You get to experience everything that you can’t when driving a car. You feel the sun beat down on you; you

BTR 52 | BORNTORIDE.COM

feel t h e chilly air when riding downhill into the trees; you hear birds chirp; and you can even smell the cool water in a creek. Your senses are intrigued by something different on every ride. If I would have realized what a stress reliever riding can be, I would have started long ago! Recently, my oldest son passed away. After getting through the first couple of weeks and letting the dust settle, the only therapy that made me feel better was riding. I remember telling my husband, “Dust the bike off and get her ready; I need to ride.” It really is therapeutic. When you are riding, you are by yourself, even when riding with others. You can ride away from all the stuff that gets on your nerves and clouds your mind. You can ride into the great wide open to clear your mind if only for a few minutes. After commuting into Washington, DC five days a week through rush hour traffic, it’s a blessing to get home and pull the bike out of the garage. Any chance I get with clear and decent weather, I ride. I ride to my fitness classes. I ride to my games. Heck, sometimes I ride to the grocery store if I don’t have many items to carry home. The results of riding daily lets me clear my mind and ease life’s stresses for a while. It helps me be more satisfied with my life. I ride because I like to be rebellious and do things that society says women can’t or shouldn’t do. I find myself choosing to experience different things like drag racing cars, four-wheeling and now riding motorcycles. One day, with more experience, I’d like to give drag racing bikes a try. I have about nine local family members who ride also. The women riders in my family (cousins: Kelly Weese 32; Becky Thompson 43; Sherri Ashley 45) all have their own husbands and/or children (most who also ride), and they also find it empowering and free to ride. We all choose different types of bikes to ride, but I think we have a common reason-to enjoy the freedom the ride gives us. We often plan girl rides with one another as well as with all the husbands and kids. On any given summer weekend, we may ride to

a local seafood restaurant on the water and then ride to a local ice cream shop for dessert. You won’t catch any of us without a smile on our faces while riding. So the next time you see a motorcycle group out on the roads, it just may be a bunch of family members having a good time riding! Our motto is a family who rides together, stays together. Many people stereotype what women motorcycle riders should look like. I’d beg to differ. Kelly, 32, is a single mother of two who works for the Naval Research Laboratory as a human resources specialist; recently finished her last chemotherapy treatment for lymphoma cancer. On any given day, she can ride her Harley Softail Springer and enjoys fishing with her boys. Becky, 43, is a division chief of development for the Department of Army and a wife and mother of two grown boys, all who also ride. Becky has been known to ride her Harley Street Bob to work in dress slacks with dress boots right into downtown Washington, DC. Sherri is a single woman and mother of a daughter in college who has dedicated her life to her career as a publications manager at Smartronix and focused most of her years on raising her world champion baton-twirling daughter. She now takes the time to ride and enjoy herself with her new shiny black Honda CBR500R. Some of us have tattoos. Some of us don’t. Some you can see and some you won’t. But I bet if you saw any one of us out to dinner at a steakhouse, you wouldn’t peg us for biker chicks. We are actually just chicks with bikes. We are hardworking, strong, independent, confident, women with a little spunk who have found the excitement and enjoyment of riding. The women who ride in my family are some pretty strong, confident, and amazing women. The point is all women who ride probably have some pretty amazing qualities about them. It takes a special kind of woman to ride. If you find yourself with a woman in your life who loves to ride, consider yourself lucky. Gayle Regalia

be cherished, and I saw brand new things to marvel at. At times, I was boiling hot—others I was freezing cold. What an amazingly diverse country the USA. I would like to thank America, all of it and all of its people. As a nation, you have some extraordinary qualities and Americans are a very special people. I was touched by your generosity, politeness, and overwhelming friendship. Just about everywhere, I went bikers greeted me like a brother. We shared road stories and a few beers and it seems bikers are almost the same the world over, going out of their way to help a fellow motorcyclist. My motorcycle carried me effortlessly on a tremendous journey without complaint and without any major problem. There was only one make of bike I could ever have ridden across the U.S. on, and it had to be a Harley-Davidson. I was so impressed by America and the people I met, I wanted to record the journey in some way and a book seemed the obvious answer. Having now written that book, France in BTR 56 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Spyke & Mike Gummy Hell

It’s July and you must keep cool my BTR friends. Mike and I have been doing just that. If it’s not time in the pool at the sanctuary or hours on the beach with toes in the sand and a drink in the hand, it was the experience out back at the Porpoise Pub’s pool party. The mini kiddie tubs were just right for me. Mike on the other hand, had it rough that day. Between the heat, missing a meal, and trying to make up for it by eating gummy bears, there’s a story to tell that only he can bring to life. It all started out innocently enough, only a few Sunday bloody Sunday specials and then Bernie arrives with the moonshine soaked sugar free gummy bears. Now, I’m not sure if it was just the heat and lack of eating or the combination of Tennessee’s purest and manmade chemicals that put Mike to shame. It’s been a week and he’s barely feeling well enough to leave the house. I cornered him in his (lately) favorite spot, the commode, and made him spill his guts, all pun intended. “OK, OK Spyke! Let me fill them in on what unearthly hell I’ve been through. Sitting in the pool and looking at that jar of gummy bears, no one would have thought what torture those cute little swollen joys of jelly could bring. X-rated Explicative and subjective phrases cannot express what happened to me, but I’m going to try. Right off the bat, I give it one word … cleanse! If you are someone who can tolerate massive amounts of sugar substitute, gelatin, and 200 proof alcohol—enjoy! If not, turn and run from Bernie and his jar of death.” “First the good part, the taste was out of this world. They were soft and chewy yet held their form. Each one had the savoriness of the fruit that it was colored with. They were so addicting I couldn’t stop at just one handful. I chewed and chewed until my jaws ached. For most of the afternoon I was a happy camper! But, or should I say BUTT, not long after eating about 30 of those swollen fruit flavored, gummiliscious gelatin delights, all hell broke loose. And it was ALL out the back end, if ya know what I mean. I had a gastrointestinal experience like you could have never imagined. It was a good thing I got 45 seconds of warning before the cramps, sweating, and bloating got the best of me.”

“Now, I’ve had food poisoning from bad oysters before, and that was a walk in the park compared to what was going on inside of me. Luckily, those 45 seconds gave me time to get to the men’s room. But, having to wait for the only stall just about killed me, and that’s when the flatulence kicked in. Heavens to Murgatroyd! The sounds, like trumpets calling the demons back to hell. Then there was the stench. It was like a thousand rotten corpses had vomited. It cleared the dude out of the stall and everybody from the men’s room line, the woman’s room, the kitchen, and front bar. I don’t know how I sat on that toilet and not succumb to my own odors. I guess it just wasn’t time for me to die, externally.” “After that what happened next felt like someone tried to funnel Niagara Falls through a coffee straw. I swear my intestines were screaming and my butt hole was a gaping, burning exit that was projectile vomiting a torrential flood of toxic waste—100% liquid fire ... NAPALM! And it went on for hours, switching from violent farting to gushing flammable coffee. During the defecation, I sat and pondered why baby diapers have names like Luv’s, Huggies, and Pampers, while undergarments for elderly are called Depends. In between the third and fourth round, I concluded when babies crap their pants, people are still going to Luv’em, Hug’em, and Pamper’em. When old people crap their pants, it Depends on if the person is in the will, and that determines who is gonna do that! After it was over, I felt violated. The only good part is I now know the wedding cake from ’05 and all of Grandma’s Xmas fruitcakes eaten over the years are finally out of my system.” He eventually pulled himself off the toilet and stumbled his way to the scoot. I had climbed from the pool, waddled over to the Fat Bird and waited for him. He looked like death warmed over. With pale white skin, disheveled hair, and swollen eyes Mike said, “Let’s make like my rectum and get the s**t outta here”! I squawked, ‘You mean you’ve got something left in ya?’He just rolled his eyes and fired up the Fat Bird, getting my wings in the wind and Fat Bird’s wheels down the road. Spyke

NOW THAT’S FREEDOM!

Recently, I had the chance to get away on a ride to nowhere and just enjoy the solitude of the road and the wind. The weather was perfect, the traffic was sporadic, and the music from the tailpipes was both soothing and relaxing. In short, it was the kind of day made to ride and to enjoy the journey. What a blessing that is. As I rode, my mind turned to thinking about how great this country of ours is, and the freedoms we have, at the expense of those

BTR 80 | BORNTORIDE.COM

who fought and died for you and for me. Those heroes deserve our appreciation and gratitude for all they have done for us! Our independence as a country gives us freedom as a people; what a blessing that is. Freedom is often mentioned in biker circles, specifically the freedom to do, or not do, specific things because the choice is ours. Either way, what we do is a choice we can make due to the freedoms we enjoy. That’s one thing I appreciate about riding, we can have a route all planned out and then in just a moment, we can change our minds. All it takes is a turn, and we are on our way to a whole new adventure. I can’t even guess how many times I’ve suddenly just decided to go a different way, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the new ride! I know this, without the freedoms of this country, we might be filing ride plans with government agencies, seeking their permission to explore our great roads and countryside. Worse yet, there would be no freedom to make changes midstream; we’d have to ride only where we were approved to go. There is another kind of freedom that means a lot to me, and it was paid for by the sacrifice

of the life of Jesus. In Romans 6:11, the Bible says, “Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This is a completely different kind of freedom, the freedom to defeat sinful things in our lives that we can’t overcome on our own. It takes the sacrifice of Jesus, and our accepting Him as our Savior, to have the victory over wicked influences of the world around us. As the Bible says in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” which means we can overcome bad habits or thoughts, through His strength and not our own. Folks, that’s freedom to have a victorious life and to chose, in Jesus, to overcome those things in our lives that we know are wrong and that we want to change! I don’t know about you, but God isn’t finished with me yet; He still has a lot of work to do in me. The great news is that He has already provided the road to victory, and it is available for you and for me. Now that’s freedom! In the Wind, Denny Dingler
