Nelitujete toho dnes? Koneckonců už zbývalo jen pět let do revoluce… Nelituju. Protože Amerika, to byla další obrovská škola. Hrál jsem se spoustou muzikantů, se kterými bych si jinak nezahrál. Se Sonnym Costanzou, Elvinem Jonesem, Hermanem ‚Juniorem‘ Cookem. S tím jsem vždycky chtěl hrát v kvintetu Horace Silvera. To se bohužel taky nepovedlo a asi už ani nepovede, protože Horace Silver prý má Alzheimera. Stejně je to pro mě ale největší jazzový skladatel. Kdekdo říká, že prý Duke Ellington… kdepak. Silver napsal neuvěřitelnou hromadu věcí a každá je jiná. Potkal jste se v USA s nějakým svým vzorem? Clifford Brown umřel v padesátých letech, Fats Navarro ještě dřív, takže ty jsem nestihnul. ▾ Jazz musí mít drajv, jinak je prý nejlepší se otočit a jít pryč. Jazz has to have drive, otherwise you might as well just pack up and leave.

It’s said you don’t really like Miles Davis... Yeah I do, he is a great trumpeter. He was just taking too much drugs and stopped practising, and for a musician, that’s the end. But he also had brilliant ideas. He saw that rockers who played three chords and just jumped around the stage in costumes were in fashion, so he did the same. He dressed in red, got himself a red trumpet and it worked. What is the position of a Czech musician, albeit well known, in the United States? Nobody knows you. I can’t help laughing when I read that a Czech singer “conquered America”. For every musician that is a star in the Czech Republic, in America there are a thousand better ones. And they are washing dishes and are happy when they occasionally get a gig somewhere. I played with Genghis Khan (Deczi’s youngest son) in Central Park to collect change into a hat. But your colleagues like Miroslav Vitouš, Jiří Mráz, Jan Hammer also worked in the U.S...
