The city is clean, tidy, safe and law-abiding, but don’t be fooled, but it certainly is not boring. Singapore knows how to dance till dawn. Boat Quay’s nightlife is arguably the most famous, but should you want to escape all the European and American tourists then go to Emerald Hill. Fashionable clubs pulsate to the rhythm of hip music played by local DJs and bars with superlative design are crowded with Singapore’s golden youth downing one martini after another. The Dempsey Hill district, where there were once barracks surrounded by jungle, is nowadays best known for its elaborate and innovative cocktails. The main shopping street also stays open all night long, as do the exclusive rooftop bars in Chinatown. If you are planning on a somewhat quieter evening, then you had better set out for the Duxton Hill area – even though it paradoxically used to be a haven of gambling dens and brothels. Today, though, the streets in this enclave are lined with calm and cosy cafés and restaurants offering almost all world cuisines imaginable.
