Coming Home to Ireland By Heather Graham

Dublin! Now, if you’re Irish, of course . . . that’s just Dublin. But, as an American—and an Irish American!—it’s a dream city. My mother was born in Dublin and began her formative years there, somewhere near the Temple Bar area. As a child, I spent a great deal of time with her family—Granny, Aunt Amy, Katie . . . and so on. They were the best storytellers ever. And I do feel that I owe anything that’s gone well in my writing is mainly due to them. Now, I do face the truth. A great deal of the storytelling was done just to keep my sister and me and our cousins in line. On the days when Granny was in charge, she liked to warn us that if we weren’t going to be behaving, the banshees would be getting us in the outhouse. She emoted! She was wonderfully dramatic. And we fell for it—we were teenagers by the time my sister and I were talking about the fact that we fell for it all—and we didn’t even have an outhouse. Of course, it wasn’t all fun and games. “Granny” was my great-grandmother. My mom’s mom died soon after they came to the states. My mom grew up with Granny—her sisters with my grandfather. My grandmother was beautiful. She died in her mid-thirties. I wish I might have known here.

Heathers Mother and Grandmother in Dublin

In my mind, my mom went on to marry the greatest guy in the world—my father. He was a Scot. Different set of circumstances. My dad came to the states because his father was offered a great job in Northern Wisconsin. But, as it was . . . Mom came from Dublin, Dad came from Stirling, and somehow, World War II ended, years went by—and they met and married in Chicago, Illinois. And they moved to Florida—my home, where I grew up. And from where, finally, I went home with my mom to Ireland. Well, of course, I fell in love. I can’t tell you how happy I am to be coming back again. My mom was truly one of the most brilliant women I ever knew, and I still owe her so much. Well before the Internet, my mom was on it. When I—or one of my children—asked her a question about something, she would often say, “I don’t know. But we’ll find out. We’ll look it up.” And she headed to the encyclopedias. She knew every classic composer; she loved language, and could use English switching from “Irish” English to “American” English without

She knew every classic composer; she loved language, and could use English switching from “Irish” English to “American” English without losing a beat. She gave me books, being a huge reader and a copy editor at an advertising agency. (She got me a few commercials, too, but that’s another story!) She was my first proof-reader. (A little awkward! I was writing horror—and romance!) I miss her terribly. I am thrilled to be returning to Dublin. It’s all new to me—and it’s all part of my own past. Well, of course, I adored my dad, too. I told my mom one day that I was going to marry a Scot, just like she had done! She smiled and shrugged and said. “How interesting. You see, I was looking for a Swede!”

What is “Coverage” and How Does It Affect Whether My Book Sells to Hollywood? By Kenneth Atchity

The Hollywood decision-maker who receives your story submission rarely has time to read it him- or herself. They assign it “for coverage” to the story department, and receive back a coverage. “Coverage” is the term used in Hollywood for the document that determines the fate of most story submissions. It’s a document, created by a story editor, in the story department of an agency, production company, studio, or broadcaster that analyzes your story’s film-worthiness. A typical coverage includes a “grading system” something like the following that suggests that the submission (screenplay, novel, nonfiction book, or treatment) is: PASS— Nothing to spend more time on. So, the executive who receives this recommendation returns the submission. RECOMMEND— The grade you’re looking for. The executive reads at least part of the submission and, if he agrees with his story editor, contacts the writer to ask about its rights status. RECOMMEND, W/DEVELOPMENT— Don’t let this one go, but it’s not perfect and needs fixing. CONSIDER— The story editor isn’t sure. Usually this grade leads to a “second read,” from a different story editor. CONSIDER, WITH DEVELOPMENT— Meaning it’s worth taking on for development, but not yet ready for production. In many cases this will lead to a pass because most companies are so swamped with production and development projects that they simply have no bandwidth for developing another one. Sometimes an additional category might be included:

“I read part of it all the way through.”—Samuel Goldwyn

KEEP AN EYE ON THE WRITER? That’s a Yes, or No. The coverage typically contains a number of analytical sections to make sure all aspects of the project are addressed: TITLE and GENRE: The title of the submission is followed by a statement of what genre it falls into: Fantasy/Adventure, Action, Romance, Drama, Horror, Thriller, Comedy, True Story, etc. TYPE: Screenplay? Manuscript? Nonfiction? Novel? Treatment? LOGLINE: This is a one- or two-sentence summary of the story, sometimes referred to as the pitch-line. The best are the shortest: “A man is mistakenly left behind when his ships leaves in a hurry. On Mars.” SYNOPSIS— This is a straightforward outline of your story, to give the executive an overview of what happens in it. It describes all main plot points and details necessary to understand the story. The preferred length of a synopsis is a page or two. When it’s longer, it’s usually a sign to the executive that the story is too complicated to make a good film. MARKET POTENTIAL— This section is a comment on the audience the project is aimed at, and whether the story editor feels it fits that market or departs from its needs or expectations, whether it’s a fresh approach to an important story, whether the story is “elevated” by its theme to make it a worthy film or series. Often names successful films that resemble this one.

STRUCTURE— This is an overall comment on how well the structure of the story holds together and accomplishes its purpose, but also where it falters in doing so. Do events unfold cohesively? Are plot points used effectively? Does the story reveal a threeact structure? A typical comment, “There seems to be repetition of the same events over and over again throughout the story.” CONFLICT— This crucial section indicates whether there is sufficient conflict, both external (in the events of the story) and internal (within the characters). Is the main external conflict of sufficient formidable force to hold audiences? Is it supported by smaller external conflicts, as well as by internal conflict on the part of the characters, especially protagonist and antagonist? CHARACTER— Is the protagonist fully formed? Do we care about Does he or she have a back story, a mission, and does he or she experience change by the end? Are the supporting characters strong? DIALOGUE— Is the dialogue unique to each character or do they all sound the same? Does the dialogue move the story along, providing information and containing subtext without being on-the-nose or unbelievable? PACING— Are scenes or events an appropriate length for their purpose? Is there a sense of build-up, a balance between tension and release, mystery and discovery? Sufficient twists and turns, cliffhangers and surprises? Does each scene or event depend on what came before?

CRAFT— Is the writing itself clear, concise, and descriptive? Is there an even balance of action and dialogue? Is proper formatting employed? Are there spelling or grammatical errors? Yeah, it’s pretty thorough, isn’t it? And here’s the catch: the writer who submitted the story will rarely see the coverage that determines its fate. It’s a real philosophical dilemma. Given that the coverage is so important, and that you won’t see it, how should you behave? The answer is to know that the coverage, like the troll under the bridge, is there lurking in wait for you--and to disarm it in advance by making sure your story addresses all the categories of expectation.

Dr. Atchity (Yale Ph.D.) is a writer-literary manager-producer who’s produced over thirty films, including Meg (now in post-production), Angels in the Snow, Hysteria, Gospel Hill, and Amityville Horror: The Evil Escapes. His most recent book is Sell Your Story to Hollywood: Writer’s Pocket Guide to the Business of Show Business. He will be offering a special session at the upcoming Dublin Writers Conference dealing with coverages and how stories are sold to Hollywood.

LOGIC— This section talks about plot holes or points lacking sufficient clarity? Do events make sense within the world of the story? For example, do science fiction and fantasy worlds remain consistent with their own set of rules?

Planting Seeds By Marianne Sciucco

I teach classes in self-publishing at three colleges in upstate New York. One of the lessons I give my students is the importance of planting seeds. As an indie author, it’s important to reach out to people who can increase your book’s discoverability or help build your reputation as a writer. You plant seeds when you ask someone to publish your work, write a blog post about you or your book, interview you, read and review your book, or share your Facebook status and retweet your tweets.

I went on with my life, and eventually forgot about this until more than a year later I received a message from the editor letting me know they’d chosen to publish my chapter in their next issue. Now that was one seed I hadn't expected to flower! Yet it did! And, although I had forgotten to cultivate it, it reaped benefits.

Anyone who has ever planted a garden knows that it takes time for the seedlings to sprout, for the fruit and the flowers to blossom. Sometimes, nothing happens at all. This is the nature of planting seeds, and it’s no different when planting seeds for your books.

In our increasingly online, instantaneous, get it right now lifestyles we often plant seeds and expect growth immediately. But that’s not how it works. Things happen in their own time. Today’s efforts may not bring results until next month, next year, or years from now. Don’t give up. Even dormant seeds can sprout new life.

Here’s an example. I once planted a seed with the online magazine Kaleidoscope, a biannual journal dedicated to expressing the experiences of disability through literature and the fine arts. I submitted a proposal for them to publish the first chapter of my novel, Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer’s love story. I received a prompt response that my submission was under consideration for a future issue, but no promises.

Creating Believable Non-Humans by Bonnie Milani

Every SF & F writer faces one unique challenge: we must make our readers believe not just the worlds we create, we must make them believe in the people who live in those worlds. To manage that we have to think like the aliens we’ve created – and that means we stop thinking like us. Consider the t’ca from C.J. Cherryh’s The Pride of Chanur: Methane-sector was talking to them: methane traffic control on visual output. The yellow, sticklike form of a chi raced up and down the t’ca’s back, darted about its head in frenetic attentions to its – whatever a t’ca was to a chi: master, comrade, friend or pet. The t’ca wailed, the multipart harmonics of its segmented brain and speech apparatus, multiple minds, multiple viewpoints in matrix translated at the bottom of the screen: T’ca

Knnn knnn knnn knnn knnn knnn knnn You know right off you’re not in Kansas anymore. So how do you go about creating such vivid, compelling characters if you’re not C.J. Cherryh? Start by doing your homework. Ask experts in the field how the characters you have in mind would work. Don’t be shy – there’s something magical in the phrase, ‘I’m working on a story and I need your expertise…’ Nine times out of ten your chosen expert will be thrilled to pitch in with good advice and recommendations. Take what you’ve learned, then go back and re-read your favorite classic sci fi or fantasy stories. Dissect the way Tolkien or Rowling or Bear or Gaiman put their worlds together. And don’t forget the neighbors. Find out how we look to them. Learn about the differences in such elementary things as body language, hand gestures, forms of address within families. Then apply it all to your story’s world. With luck, you’ll see your non-human characters come alive.

Saving Spade, by Dennis Ogden WWI has ended but the battle to save a horse has just begun. Aboriginal Trooper Lewis Dunbar of the Australian 2nd Light Horse Brigade should be elated. The war said to end all wars is finally over and he is being sent home after two years of battle in the Arabian deserts...but he’s not! “The horses are staying!” came the order. He cannot abandon Spade, the horse he reared. He will desert the army and ride off into the Sinai desert to find a new life together. But his plan goes astray when A’isha, a mute Bedouin girl, steals Spade. With Lewis chasing on foot, so begins the perilous journey of two nomads into the unforgiving heat and sparseness of the desert and the battles against those who threaten them along the way…

Review: An exciting read from the start with plenty of action, a cast of characters of very different origins and motivations set against a background of diverse beliefs and the influence of strange supernatural forces. But overall there is the overarching (and very moving) story of the deep bond between a young man and his horse. A great read - Kate, Brisbane Buy Here

Should she trust him? Three days later, she is on the run with Ari and the little girl, with killers Esti and Sergio on their trail. She glimpses a man she thinks is Thomas. Is he, too in Spain? And why? How far will Anne go to save Naomi? From Spain to France to Italy, this is Anne’s most dangerous journey.

Reviews: “I thoroughly enjoyed The Child on the Terrace. It remained suspenseful to the very end. Virginia painted a very good picture of the area where the mystery begins, also of other places the story took Anne and Naomi to on their “dangerous journey” through Spain, France and Italy. I developed an attachment to certain characters in the book, despite their questionable intentions! The author’s interest and knowledge of art is appreciated too throughout the story. A very good read on a snowy winter day!” - Anne Simpson Buy Here

The Curious Autobiography of Elaine Jakes, by HR Jakes The Curious Autobiography of Elaine Jakes offers us slices of classic Americana lovingly transformed by the spirit of Welsh storytelling. It is the spiritual odyssey of a woman finding her way back to faith. Her journey is touching, amusing, and at times hilarious.

Reviews: ‘’The Curious Autobiography of Elaine Jakes reveals a feisty individual who engaged life fully and in all of its wonder. Right from the beginning you know that you are in for a wild ride, literally, and the subsequent narrative never disappoints. Elaine Jakes’ life is a tale full of sound and fury, but one signifying something universal: a life of ongoing transformation. Zorba the Greek, were he a real person, would have fallen in love with Elaine immediately.’’ Somewhere between faith and truth there lies a curious seed implanted which grows to a wandering spirit from faith in something bigger outside of ourselves. This book touches all of this. This is the kind of book you want to read sitting before a roaring fire enjoying a glass of port losing all sense of time and yourself in the narrative.
